OA Week 2010
by Subbiah Arunachalam 29 Apr '10

29 Apr '10

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE April 28, 2010 For more information, contact: Jennifer McLennan (202) 296-2296 ext. 121 jennifer [at] arl [dot] org Open Access Week 2010 declared for October 18 to 24 Researchers challenged to demonstrate the impact of Open Access on research and scholarship (Washington, DC) Open Access Week, the global event to promote free, immediate, online access to research now entering its fourth year, has been declared for October 18 to 24, 2010. Open Access Week is an opportunity for the worldwide academic and research community to continue to learn about the potential benefits of Open Access (OA), to share what they’ve learned with colleagues, and to inspire wider participation in helping to make Open Access a new norm in scholarship and research. “Open Access Week has evolved from a one-day student event on a dozen campuses to a truly global phenomenon,” said Jennifer McLennan, Open Access Week program director at SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition). “We’ve seen participation expand to include hundreds of university and college campuses, research institutes, funding agencies, libraries, and think tanks – all connecting the fast-growing global momentum toward openness with the advancement of policy changes on the local level.” In 2009, Open Access Week spurred the announcement of actions including expanded open-access publication funds, the adoption of institution-wide open-access policies, and the release of new reports on the societal and economic benefits of OA. This year’s OA Week preparations kick off with a challenge to researchers from Dr. Philip E. Bourne, Professor of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences at the University of California San Diego and Founding Editor-in-Chief of PLoS Computational Biology. In a video posted to the OA Week Web site, Bourne calls upon scholars to think beyond free and ready access to the literature – made possible by Open Access – and consider how technology may be deployed to advance research, to truly mine the increasing amount of available literature. He says, “What I think ultimately will be the main success of Open Access, is that you have the full text of the literature in an XML format that can be analyzed and used by computer. The idea that we’ll be able to keep up with [the volume of literature being published] is just untenable. To actually make full use of the literature, we’re going to require tools to help us.” He challenges his peers in the research community to surface efforts like SciVee (a new type of learning experience that mashes up journal articles with rich media) and UCSD’s BioLit (an initiative to integrate database identifiers and rich meta-data from open-access articles with biological databases) – both of which “would not be possible without unbridled and free access to the literature.” Challenges like Dr. Bourne’s, and responses to them – experiences and projects that demonstrate the power of Open Access to enable the Web and advance discovery – will be highlighted across global efforts in conjunction with the Week. Details may be posted or linked on the Open Access Week Web site by October 10, 2010. The new Open Access Week Web site, at http://www.openaccessweek.org, details how participants across sectors – from research funders and producers to students and libraries – have taken advantage of the event to advance Open Access, and offers ideas for 2010. “There are a multitude of ways to participate in OA Week,” said Alma Swan, program adviser. “It can be as simple as wearing a bright orange shirt or as complex as introducing a new OA policy. OA Week may also be the chance to let your imagination have full rein and come up with something ambitious, wacky, or fun.” Organizations and individuals planning to participate or interested in more information about Open Access Week 2010 should register now on the Web site for access to regional and global contacts and resources. Open Access Week is organized by SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), with expert guidance from an international panel of Open Access leaders. Program advisers include: Subbiah Arunachalam (Centre for Internet and Society, Bangalore), Leslie Chan (University of Toronto, Scarborough, OASIS), Melissa Hagemann (Open Society Institute), Thomas Hickerson (University of Calgary), Heather Joseph (SPARC), Iryna Kuchma (eIFL.net) Li Lin (National Science Library, CAS), Donna Okubo (Public Library of Science), Robin Peek (Open Access Directory, Simmons College), Carolina Rossini (Berkman Center), Nick Shockey (Right to Research Coalition), Peter Suber (Berkman Center, Earlham College, SPARC), Alma Swan (Key Perspectives Ltd, OASIS), Ikuko Tsuchide (Digital Repository Federation, Japan), Xiaolin Zhang (National Science Library, CAS). For more information, visit the Open Access Week Web site at http://www.openaccessweek.org. ## SPARC (Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition), with SPARC Europe and SPARC Japan, is an international alliance of more than 800 academic and research libraries working to create a more open system of scholarly communication. SPARC’s advocacy, educational, and publisher partnership programs encourage expanded dissemination of research. BMA Conference Announcement, July 2010 and Call for participation Memorabilia of Failed and forgotten brands in India Bangalore Management Academy, Bangalore: 29-30 July2010 Abstract submission Deadline : 15, May 2010 Acceptance of abstracts : 15, June 2010 Final paper Submission Deadline : 1, July 2010 Conference on : 29-30 July 2010 Many Indian brands that some of us have grown up with do not appear on television commercials, print media or the internet. We no longer get to see or hear of them. What happened to those brands? Did they die a natural death? Or did they fall prey to the liberalization gates opened by India in 1991? It would be of great interest for the firms and the academia to know and dissect your perspectives on what happened to those brands along the way. Some of the brands that we may well be aware of are Dynora(TV), Carona(footwear brand, Did liberty, Bata, Nikes and Reeboks eat it up?), Canada Dry ( Beverage, Despite being similar to Sprite and 7 up we don’t see the brand in supermarkets anymore while the sprite and 7 Up continues to live.), Kelvinator, Moti soap etc. The multitude of perspectives that we may get would help us build our repertoire of knowledge on mistakes committed by those brands that were well established for the times and learn from them. Bangalore Management Academy (BMA) a leading Business Management Institution having collaborations with Bharathidasan Institute of Management (BIM), Bharathidasan University (BU), Edith Cowan University (ECU), University of Aberdeen, Retailers Association of India (RAI), Asia Pacific University College of Technology and Innovation (UCTI) Malaysia, Singapore Human Resources Institute (SHRI), Nanyang Institute of Management (NIM) and Pondicherry University announces the call for papers on “Memorabilia of failed and forgotten brands in India”. We invite you to participate in the process and contribute your perspectives on any brand that you think no more exists today but was a soaring brand in its hey days. For online submissions please visit www.bmaindia.com Peer- reviewed papers will be published in our Journal. The best paper award will also be selected from accepted complete papers. Five Security Myths
by Upadhyay P K 28 Apr '10

28 Apr '10

Dear Colleagues, You may like to know the hidden security threats to your application software, data and network. There are certain myths about security. Think you're doing everything you need to do to be safe? Think again. Here are five common myths about digital security. 1. I don't have anything an attacker would want 2. I have antivirus software installed, so I am safe. 3. Security is a concern only if I use Windows. 4. My router has a firewall, so my PC is protected. 5. Since I visit only major, reputable sites, I have nothing to worry about. Antivirus software and a firewall alone can't guarantee your safety. Read the full story on 'How to Stop 11 hidden Security Threats' in PC World, March 2010 at http://www.pcworld.com/article/187199/how_to_stop_11_hidden_security_threat… regards P K Upadhyay NIC , Delhi -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Does the UGC allow a university research scholar to do job abroad on the name of data collection?
by raiyan ghani 28 Apr '10

28 Apr '10

* **Does the UGC allow a university research scholar to deceive the department and do job abroad on the name of data collection?* Dear LIS professionals Greetings!!! As we are aware that UGC is the highest governing body to ensure high quality education in India. The way UGC has come up with research funds, is no doubt appreciative at every account. Every central university is bound to follow the norms of UGC Act/Ordinances/ Rules and Regulation. For each sect within the university, UGC has its own norms and regulations. *So keeping all the UGC Act/Circulars/Rules and Regulation in concern, the question arise after seeing the current trend that does UGC allow a research scholar of a central university to deceive the department and do job abroad on the name of data collection? * We have been going through lot of posting on this forum in regard to the improvement and trends of LIS, as well as its a hot topic in this forum to change the current scenario of the LIS. The question at this hour is that researchers are the pillars and path to come up with new innovation to their respective fields. But, it seems to be a trend in the university and specially in library science department producing fake researcher who never ever paid heed to their research and being awarded a doctorate degree by the end of their duration confined by UGC. Is this type of researcher will bring change who had their thesis copied by some one else, doing job abroad and their guide working on his/her behalf, deceiving the department and enjoying other monetary benefits on the name of data collection, paying a hefty amount to the supervisor of his/her income. I will be pleased to hear the answer to my question on this forum specially by senior academicians of LIS profession, experts of LIS profession, serving current and ex LIS member professionals to UGC and from all who want to improve the scenario of LIS profession. * * Thanks With regards, Syed Raiyan Ghani. Program Coordinator Applied Engineering Management Program-KSU (Missouri University of Science & Technology, Rolla, Missouri - USA) A proud Alumini of DRTC, ISI Bangalore. Life is pleasant. Death is peaceful. It's the transition that's troublesome!! -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.
