Dear All, It’s our pleasure to inform you that, Birla Institute of Technology is conducting national workshop on *“KOHA: Open Source Software for Library Automation” On 4-5 June, 2010.* The workshop will cover installation of KOHA on Windows or Linux operating system, Introduction to Windows or Linux Operating System, customization and configuration of KOHA software, demonstration of all modules like Acquisitions, Cataloguing, Serial Control, Circulation & OPAC, Introduction to MARC 21, multilingual support in KOHA, MARC records, import feature in KOHA etc. Target Audience The Koha workshop is of great use to the library professionals and Professor I/C of academic libraries, public libraries, special libraries, government departmental libraries, institutional libraries, etc that are interested in library automation. The workshop will help the library professionals to adopt the open source software and benefit from its wide-ranging features. The number of participants is expected to be 30 and the preference will be given to first-cum-first basis who have basic knowledge of handling computers. Workshop Fee The registration fee for the workshop includes workshop kit (software installable, Operating System, Training Material), breakfast, tea, lunch and dinner. Delivering the key-note address, Shri. Jahagirdar, Librarian, National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC) focussed on the positive steps that could ensure access to library and learning resources at an affordable cost. Efficiency and quality in provision of library services for teaching, learning and research is the corner stone for the survival and success of libraries, he said, and explained the quality indicators of Library and Information System and the grading system of NAAC. S. Srinivasaraghavan, Librarian, Bharathidasan University, explained the NBA (National Board of Accreditation) parameters for engineering colleges while M. Durairajan, Librarian, St. Joseph's College, spoke on ‘Best Practices in Library and Information Sciences.' Inaugurating the workshop, Dr.P.V. Konnur, University Librarian, Bangalore University, emphasised the need for enhancement of the quality of services to attract users and optimise the use of library resources. Presiding over, the Principal K. Anbarasu spoke of the dynamic transformation of libraries. Mike Doyle (D-PA) and a bi-partisan host of co-sponsors. The proposed bill would build on the success of the first U.S. mandate for public access to the published results of publicly funded research at the National Institutes of Health (NIH), and require federal agencies with annual extramural research budgets of $100 million or more to provide the public with online access to research manuscripts stemming from funded research no later than six months after publication in a peer-reviewed journal. “Free and open access to scientific literature and data are the underpinnings of discovery in the digital age,” said Stephen Friend MD PhD, President and Co-Founder of Sage Bionetworks. “Full collaboration among researchers is essential, and we have the power now to communicate, collaborate, and innovate in ways that were previously unimaginable. I applaud the sponsors of the Federal Research Public Access Act for their commitment to ensuring the kind of access scientists need to make progress on improved disease treatments and diagnostics in the digital world.” Like the Senate bill introduced in 2009 by Senators Lieberman (I-CT) and Cornyn (R-TX), H.R. 5037 would unlock unclassified research funded by agencies including: Department of Agriculture, Department of Commerce, Department of Defense, Department of Education, Department of Energy, Department of Health and Human Services, Department of Homeland Security, Department of Transportation, Environmental Protection Agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration, and the National Science Foundation. WebWorld Knowledgebase to simplify access to online contents 15-04-2010 (Paris) UNESCO's Communication and Information Sector (CI) has launched a new online service, Knowledgebase, which has been developed to simplify access to different online contents and to enable users of its website to find quick answers to their questions. WebWorld, the website of UNESCO's Communication and Information Sector, contains a large amount of information about the Sector's activities. Due to the complex website structure and the specificities of UNESCO's language, this information is not always easily accessible. Thanks to the new WebWorld service, Knowledgebase, users can now find what they are looking for in a few clicks. The Knowledgebase allows the search either by category or key word. The main categories cover the questions about the CI website, the Sector's various activities and institutional structure, as well as more general information about UNESCO's events, publications, job opportunities, fellowships, contacts, etc. The search is enriched by a smart suggest, which displays relevant suggestions in response to key words as they are typed. This feature can help users who need answers to their questions but are not sure where to start. The Knowledgebase provides a number of other interesting and useful features to its users.
