Just Published UNESCO Book "Broadcasting Science"
by Puna Das 31 May '11

31 May '11

Broadcasting Science by KP Madhu and Savyasaachi Jain Published in 2010 by United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO), New Delhi and Asia-Pacific Institute for Broadcasting Development (AIBD), Kuala Lumpur This book is for broadcasters of all flavours, colours and tastes. Whether you are reporting politics, business, sports, fashion or any other beat, which appear far removed from science, you will benefit from having a basic awareness of science. Science is not all about faraway galaxies or subatomic particles. It is about explanations about natural phenomena, including our society. So, politics, religion or our thought processes or imagination are not beyond the scope of scientific investigation. For example, if you are reporting a local conflict, there are enough scientific studies on aggression and violence that may throw light on the situation. You can give a new spin on sports if you have enough understanding about sports science and the pharmacology of performance enhancing drugs. Business cycles are specific examples of quasi-periodic phenomena and your reporting would bear a fresh perspective if you could dig deep into non-linear dynamics. How can you report on a crime without understanding the basics of forensic science? This book will help you to improve your programme even if you are a DJ presenting songs at a local radio station. Of course, if you want to specialize in science reporting, you might want more awareness of science than what a producer of a cookery show would need. We have something for you too in this book. by ashokar kar 30 May '11

30 May '11

Dear all, My current employer demanded me to do the stack verification and definitely it will lead the problem of ‘Loss of Book ‘so I request the professionals to give the suggestion to the following doubts. 1) Permissible loss in verification with proof and where shall I get that proof copy. 2) If loss of books are more than the permissible loss then what is the procedure to recover the loss and how the cost of loss is calculated with the library staff. It is appreciable and thankful in advance for the replay. -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

News from THe Hindu dated 29th May 2011 Books on wheels Staff Reporter Mobile stall to drive to different areas Varied fare: Visitors going through the newly launched mobile library on Saturday. HYDERABAD: When was the last time you visited a library or borrowed a book from library? Considering the inconvenience of visiting a library or buying a book from a book stall, Sahitya Bharathi Book Shop, Chikkadpally has launched its ‘Book on wheels', a mobile book stall offering wide variety of books in the city. Carrying novels, short stories books, biographies, devotional books etc, the van will travel in different residential colonies and offer books for sale. Readers can pick their books and even avail ten per cent discount on every purchase, says D. Samba Siva Rao of Sahitya Bharathi Book Shop. The objective is to inculcate book reading among city dwellers, besides promoting Telugu literature. Lot of effort has gone into selecting books to be offered through this van. It carries about 500 books and some of them are rare books, he says. “Apart from selecting books, efforts were put in for designing the van. Limca Book of Records winner K. Sudhakar, who is known for designing and making cars with innovative ideas has designed the van,” says Mr. Rao. The mobile van was launched by well-known writer Yandamoori Veerendranath at Sri Krishna Devaraya Andhra Basha Nilayam here on Saturday. ========= Dr P Vyasamoorthy, 30 Gruhalakshmi Colony Secunderabad 500015 Ph 040-27846631 / 9490804278.My blog: http://vyasa-kaaranam-ketkadey.blogspot.com/ -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

by Gowri Ravindranth 28 May '11

28 May '11

Dear Friends: I am pleased to draw your attention to a forthcoming program mentioned below. You could simply login to the link given at the time mentioned and participate as a guest. Webchat: 5 Myths About the “Information Age” Date: Wednesday, June 8th Time: 10:30 am DC (14:30 GMT/ 16:30 pm Rome) 8.00 p.m. in India Location: https://statedept.connectsolutions.com/rome Description: Confusion about the nature of the so-called information age has led to a state of collective false consciousness. It's no one's fault but everyone's problem, because in trying to get our bearings in cyberspace, we often get things wrong, and the misconceptions spread so rapidly that they go unchallenged. Join Robert Darnton for a conversation about 5 myths of the information age. Robert Darnton was educated at Harvard University and Oxford University, where he was a Rhodes Scholar. After a brief stint as a reporter for The New York Times, he became a Junior Fellow in the Society of Fellows at Harvard. He taught at Princeton from 1968 until 2007, when he became Carl H. Pforzheimer University Professor and Director of the University Library at Harvard. He has been a visiting professor or fellow at many universities and institutes for advanced study, and his outside activities include service as a trustee of the New York Public Library and the Oxford University Press (USA). He has written and edited two dozen books, including The Business of Enlightenment: A Publishing History of the Encyclopédie (1979, an early attempt to develop the history of books as a field of study), The Great Cat Massacre and Other Episodes in French Cultural History (1984, probably his most popular work, which has been translated into 16 languages), Berlin Journal, 1989-1990 (1991, an account of the fall of the Berlin Wall and the collapse of East Germany), The Forbidden Best-Sellers of Prerevolutionary France (1995, a study of the underground book trade), and Slander. The Art and Politics of Libel in Eighteenth-Century France (2008). His latest book is “The Case for Books: Past, Present and Future” (2009). Format: This will be a video webchat in English.
