Equating Libraries with Facebook and Twitter: A Misnomer
by Vasanth 05 Sep '11

05 Sep '11

Dear Sir/Madam, There is a phenomenon (rather it should be called a fashion statement) among library and information professionals that we are trying to equate libraries with Facebook, Twitter and other social media tools. This phenomenon was more visible in recently concluded two day conference in Shivamogga on “Collection Management in Changing Context: Problems and Prospects” organized by the Kuvempu University College Librarians’ Association, Shivamogga on August 19th and 20th of 2011. But the question is, can libraries be equated with Facebook and Twitter? This comparison itself seems to be a complete misnomer. Here it has been tried to look at how social media cannot be a replacement for libraries and the misconception of this grand rhetoric. Social media cannot be a replacement for cultural institutions like libraries. Social media tools can best be used for providing library services (alerts, news & events, chat references, post tutorials, etc.,) rather looking it as a replacement for libraries. The argument of “Libraries without walls” and “Paperless society” which emerged in the early 80s and 90s have not replaced libraries. But technological developments have helped libraries to collect, organize, and disseminate information in varied formats with multiple options to access information. It is worth noting that library professionals were the first to use technology for information processing. The Cranfield Indexing experiment is a case in point. Thus as mentioned above, social media tools can be best used as a supplement for providing library services. Another important aspect is engaging digital natives in a critical study or thinking. The nature of non-linearity of text available on the Internet has contributing in cognitive decline of the Internet users. The recent works mainly of Nicholas Carr’s “The Shallows: How the Internet is Changing the way we Think, Read and Remember”, “Is Google Making Us Stupid?” and another interesting article which has been appeared in EDUCAUSE Review entitled “Individual Knowledge in the Internet” by Larry Sanger, the co-founder of Wikipedia have critical of how the non-linearity of text available on the Internet changing the way we read books either in analog or digital format and turning us as a “skimming machine” instead of engaging in deep reading or critical study. Libraries for time immemorial have helped scholars to study and engage in critical thinking. Does same ambience exist in a virtual world? The longevity and the sustainability of social media tools are another important issue to deliberate. The Interne savvy users prepare digital technologies which are easy to use and allow collective participation. It has been pointed that social network sites are famous just because these tools allow for connecting with friends. The social media tools which are famous few years back have become near-extinct. The tools such as Orkut, and MySpace have become less famous day by day. The recent survey reports of Pew Internet and American Life Project have found that there is a considerable decline of interest among American Teenagers in blogging. The decline of using blogs in recent time raises the question of sustainability of social media tools. Google Plus which has been released very recently regarded as a potential threat for Facebook. Thus the development in social media technologies keeps us always guessing what next? In terms of Internet users mainly from third world countries like Sub-Saharan African countries and some of the Asian countries like India are very few. In India only 7 out of every 100 Indians are able to access Internet, if this is the case how social media can be equated with libraries. Libraries have remained as cultural legacy for centuries and it will continue with technological developments mainly how we collect organize and disseminate information. In this context comparing libraries with social media is a misnomer. Library is not social media; social media is not library. ------------------------- With best wishes Vasantha Raju N GFGC-Periyapatna Mysore -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

world catalogue turns 40-
by Prof. N. Laxman Rao. 03 Sep '11

03 Sep '11

Press Release: OCLC [August 26, 2011] WorldCat turns 40 Copyright (c) 2011 OCLC SummaryAugust 26, 2011 marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of WorldCat, the world’s most comprehensive database of resources held in libraries around the globe. On August 26, 1971, the OCLC Online Union Catalog and Shared Cataloging system (now known as WorldCat) began operation. That first day, from a single terminal, catalogers at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio, cataloged 133 books online. Today, WorldCat comprises more than 240 million records representing more than 1.7 billion items in OCLC member libraries worldwide. ________________________________ DUBLIN, Ohio, USA, 26 August 2011—Today marks the 40th anniversary of the launch of WorldCat, the world's most comprehensive database of resources held in libraries around the globe. "We congratulate the thousands of librarians and catalogers around the world who have helped to build WorldCat over the past 40 years keystroke by keystroke, record by record," said Jay Jordan, OCLC President and CEO. "We who work at OCLC are proud to have been a part of this remarkable story, and I want to thank our member institutions and employees for the years of dedicated effort that helped build this unique resource. Fred Kilgour's vision—improving access to information through library cooperation—is every bit as vital today as it was in 1971. This anniversary is an important milestone in a shared journey that, I believe, will continue for many decades to come." WorldCat is a database of bibliographic information built continuously by OCLC libraries around the world. Each record in the WorldCat database contains a bibliographic description of a single item or work and a list of institutions that hold the item. The institutions share these records, using them to create local catalogs, arrange interlibrary loans and conduct reference work. Libraries contribute records for items not found in WorldCat using OCLC shared cataloging systems. "In retrospect, I have to say that in those early days, I don't think we really understood the enormity of the system that we were embarking upon, much less did we consider what the future possibilities might be," said Lynne Lysiak, who had just started her career at Ohio University Libraries when WorldCat first went online, and is now retired. "As OCLC forges ahead now with WorldCat Local and cloud-computing developments, they are embarking on a new era and suite of services for libraries and their users. It's an exciting time." "OCLC cataloging and resource sharing services and our library management systems continue to help libraries improve their productivity, save money and improve access to their collections," said Mr. Jordan. "Against a backdrop of continuous technological change, WorldCat and the OCLC cooperative have continued to grow." Since 1971, 240 million records have been added to WorldCat, spanning more than 5,000 years of recorded knowledge, from about 3400 B.C. to the present. This unique collection of information encompasses records in a variety of formats—books, e-books, DVDs, digital resources, serials, sound recordings, musical scores, maps, visual materials, mixed materials and computer files. Like the knowledge it describes, WorldCat grows steadily. Every second, library members add seven records to WorldCat. Once records have been added to WorldCat, they are discoverable on the Web through popular search and partner sites, and through WorldCat.org. Records entered into WorldCat since 1971 have been continuously migrated, reformatted and updated to conform to newly issued cataloging standards. They have been touched and enhanced hundreds of times by librarians around the world and by OCLC staff and automated systems. The first OCLC cathode ray tube terminal was the Irascope Model LTE, which was manufactured by Spiras Systems. OCLC deployed 68 LTES, one of which is now on permanent display in the National Museum of American History, Smithsonian Institution, Washington D.C., and another in a new OCLC Museum dedicated today in Dublin, Ohio. The LTE was connected to OCLC via a dedicated, leased telephone line from AT&T; message traffic moved at the rate of 2400 baud (2,400 symbols per second). People can now use their mobile phones to access WorldCat via WorldCat Local, where 4G wireless downloads are 2,500 times faster than the original OCLC network. Wired networks are now 416,000 times faster. Find more about WorldCat on the OCLC website, and watch WorldCat grow as libraries around the world contribute to the database.
