Call for Action: Sign the White House Petition for Public Access to Federally Funded Research
by franc＠library.iisc.ernet.in 31 May '12

31 May '12

Sorry for the cross-posting. Dear Members, The Obama administration is currently considering which policy priorities they will act on before the 2012 election season swings into high gear. There is a brief, critical window of opportunity to ensure that public access to the results of federally funded research is one of those priorities. On May 21, a petition calling for Public Access to Federally Funded Research Results was posted on the White House's "We the People" website. If the petition garners 25,000 signatures within 30 days, it will be reviewed by White House staff and considered for action. A broad range of open access supporters, including ARL and SPARC, are spreading the word about the petition using e-mail, blogs, Twitter, Facebook, and even YouTube. Tweets on the petition (many using hashtags #openaccess and #OAMonday) have included endorsements from such thought-leaders as Jimmy Wales, Tim O'Reilly, and Lawrence Lessig. Please sign the petition today! http://www.arl.org/sparc/media/Sign_White_House_Petition_Open_Access_to_Res… Twitter user @FakeElsevier has created an excellent video you can use to recruit friends, available from http://access2research.org/. Source: http://www.arl.org/pp/access/accessfunded/wh-petition-may2012.shtml Since the petition can be signed by any adult in the world, and since the benefits of President Obama taking action will be global, I urge you to sign the petition. Thanks. With best wishes, - Francis JRD Tata Memorial Library IIsc, Bengaluru -- This message has been scanned for viruses and dangerous content by MailScanner, and is believed to be clean.

Pay teachers more to attract talent: Sibal
by Rahul Hiremath 30 May '12

30 May '12

Pay teachers more to attract talent: Sibal Human Resource Development Minister Kapil Sibal has said that teachers should be paid more in order to attract talent in the academic field. Expressing concern over the degrading quality of faculty in the country, he said teaching won't attract talent unless teachers were given proper benefits. "There is no uniformity in salaries of teachers. No medical benefit, no house rent allowance, incentive or pension," Sibal said. "Even parents encourage their children to go for jobs that get them liquid capital (money)... Unless we realise it is the most important to invest in building human capital by educating children, we can't do anything," he said. The minister also stressed on the need of devising a mechanism that will helped teachers update themselves with latest knowledge in their field. "Data banks with high quality teacher education material can be set up which can be accessed by all. There is no system in place to ensure life-long learning for teachers," the minister said. Sibal mentioned that a national mission on teacher's education is being launched in the 12th plan had its focus on improving quality of teachers. [Source: DNA] -- Rahul R. Friends: Have you planned how you are going to celebrate the Open Access Week this year, 22-28 October 2012? You can make a good beginning now by signing the White House Open Access Petition and forwarding the petition to all your friends with a request to sign it. In terms of research papers published, journals subscribed, articles downloaded, etc India is among the top dozen countries of the world. We have a stake in keeping scholarly communication space as open as possible. Incidentally, anyone anywhere in the world can sign the White House Open Access Petition. It is not restricted to US citizens/ scientists/ researchers/ librarians. Any citizen above a certain age can sign. Best wishes. Arun From: Andrea Higginbotham <andrea(a)arl.org> Hello All! We're on our way to surpassing 20,000 signatures on the White House Open Access petition - in just one week! - and we need your help to close this out successfully. To help drive this effort home, please consider sending out one more email blast to your contact lists. This is a truly effective way of not only getting the word out, but also of showing your support. Consider a "+1" email request - encouraging those on your network who have already signed to recruit a friend or colleague to sign, to be their "+1." It's a great way to include new voices into the mix! Our social media efforts have been phenomenally effective - Twitter is aglow with references to #openaccess and #OAMonday so please use these hashtags if you tweet. Facebook is also a great way of getting the petition link out to all of your friends - you can add a link directly to the petition in your Facebook posting to make it easy for folks to sign.
