Discussion on JNU Library
by Dr.Dineshan Koovakkai 26 Sep '13

26 Sep '13

Dear Moderator, It is quite unfortunate to see a posting personally blaming a librarian regarding a press report. I am referring to the Hindu report on JNU Library. The students' unions have every right to criticize anything and everything. But, it is quite unfortunate that we, library professionals, make a platform like LIS Forum for such unhealthy criticisms. I could see the postings of many of the students of JNU appreciating the library there. MYSTERY OVER OBESITY 'FRAUD': RESEARCHER BAFFLED AFTER HIS RESULTS APPEAR IN BOGUS PAPER.
by Ragaavendra R 26 Sep '13

26 Sep '13

Dear Moderator, Kindly circulate this. MYSTERY OVER OBESITY 'FRAUD': RESEARCHER BAFFLED AFTER HIS RESULTS APPEAR IN BOGUS PAPER. Ghost writing is taking on an altogether different meaning in a mysterious case of alleged scientific fraud. The authors of a paper published in July (A. Vezyraki et al. Biochem. Biophys. Res. Commun. http://doi.org/nxb; 2013), which reported significant findings in obesity research, seem to be phantoms. They are not only unknown at the institution listed on the paper, but no trace of them as researchers can be found. The paper, published in the Elsevier journal Biochemical and Biophysical Research Communications (BBRC), is not the kind of prank that journals have encountered before, in which hoaxsters have submitted dummy papers to highlight weaknesses in the peer-review process. The paper's reported findings - that overexpression of two novel proteins in fat cells leads to improvements in metabolic processes related to diabetes and obesity in mice - are, in fact, true. ICADL 2013 will not be just another run-of-the-mill DL conference! Apart from plenary talks and presentations of accepted papers, several special events are lined up during the conference. Once such event is showcasing of Indian Digital Library Initiatives (IDLI). We will select up to 10 proposals for showcasing them at the ICADL 2013. The criteria for selection would include (but not limited to): 1. Innovation and Novelty - There should be some aspect of novelty in the initiative. For example novelty could be customization of DL software to meet local needs or to implement a feature that is not supported by the software. The customization could be at the source code and/or configuration levels. Novelty could also be in terms of how social media is used to engage the users 2. Currency - The Initiatives should be current with respect to content and DL software and features being used 3. Impact - What has been the impact of your DL? How and how many users have you reached? How are you engaging your end user? What does the usage statistics reveal? Do you feel that the DL initiative that you are part of qualifies for the above and more? Then, here is your chance to attend the ICADL 2013 for free. You could also get financial support to attend the next ICADL. The write up should not be more than 2 pages and it should cover: - Name of the DL initiative - Year of establishment - Software being used - Current version of the software and the version being used - Innovation / Novelty in the initiative. Please briefly describe the innovation introduced by you - Impact of the initiative with reference user to its reach and usage - Email id of the administrator Up to 10 selected proposals will get a free registration for the ICADL 2013 conference. This apart, the top two DL initiative will win attractive prizes and the best initiative may get financial support to attend the next ICADL! All the selected proposals can showcase their DLs through posters and live demonstrations. Conference Information
by Khalid Nadeem Khan 24 Sep '13

24 Sep '13

Dear Mr. Moderator Greetings of The Day I am sending Conference information for member of lis-forum. This information is given below . CONFERENCE ANNOUNCEMENT Society for Library Professionals (SLP) & University of Delhi South Campus in Association with Special Libraries Association, Asian Chapter are pleased to announce two- day Library and Information Professionals Summit (LIPS) 2014 “From Brick to Click: Transforming Libraries into Social Spaces” on Friday-Saturday, 7-8 February 2014 at New Delhi, India Conference Theme : With the emergence of distributed forms of information in a double click environment, the role of physical libraries have changed considerably over the last ten years, to reflect changes in the nature of education. The importance of collaboration, group work and communication in teaching and learning are widely recognised and the central role of the library as a repository of facts and information is changing. While it is still important to have this kind of resource, it has proven to be a diminishing draw in terms of library traffic. The notion of transforming libraries into social and cultural spaces is an expansive role for the future library not only serving as an information resource, but much more, with the exact mission and goals evolving and changing over time. A culture-based library is one that taps into the spirit of the community, assessing priorities and providing resources to support the things deemed most important. Libraries are in a unique position to experiment with creative spaces so the future role of the library can define itself. Since the role of the library 20 years from now is still a mystery, libraries need to put their heads together to scratch the surface of many more changes to come and determine what ideas are drawing attention and getting traction. The conference aims to address the main issues of concern within the framework of this transformation. Program Structure : The conference program will include plenary sessions, invited and contributed papers, poster sessions, product presentations, panel discussions and an exhibition. A series of parallel sessions will be held offering delegates a wide range of in depth presentations by leading national and international experts. Submission of Papers : Unpublished research papers on different themes of the conference are solicited by December 15, 2013. Submission of full papers (not more than 5 pages) with an abstract in approximately 200 words, keywords and references on A4 size paper with margin 1.5 cm on all sides in MS Word format in 10 points New Times Roman type single line spacing. Length of the paper should not exceed 4000 words. Details such as name of the author, designation, title of the article, abstract, name of the affiliating institution, mailing address, telephone number, fax number and E-mail address are to be included. Authors of accepted papers will be informed by 15 January 2014. Selected papers will be published in the proceedings.
