Dear All, I wish to know is it appropriate to add/allow commercial advertisements on the library Online public access catalog (OPAC)? if no then why? and if yes then why the libraries/websites can't allow commercial ads on their website and earn money for their institutes? Dear all, I am a Co-Chair of the Association for Information Science and Technology / ASIS&T (Asia-Pacific Chapter) and an associate professor at The University of Hong Kong (Faculty of Education). Our Association is holding a conference in Cambodia with “Effective Learning in Low-Tech Information Environments” as the theme (https://www.asist.org/events/regional-meetings/asiapacificregionalconferenc…) The conference is organized and supported by a team of esteemed international experts in Information Science and Learning Sciences from 19 different countries. We believe that the Conference can help Cambodia to move forward in applying knowledge and techniques in the two disciplines for the benefits of the Cambodian learners, as well as learners in other developing countries. A researcher gets many clues on the quality of Journals; subscribing institutions get to know many ideas about the kind and quality of Journals before they decide for subscriptions. Funding institutions understand the quality of published research output of researchers and the assessment of the quality of Journals helps the professional societies to improve the quality of Journals they publish. This study centered on seven objectives and four hypotheses. Subject-wise distribution of Journals in SJR and JCR; Ranking of Journals based on SJR and JCR indicators; Ranking of Journals based on h-index; Correlation between different quality metrics; Citation relationship across the Journals; Comparing the ranking of Journals published in India with International level using SJR and JCR; Geographical distribution and Type of Journals published. This study brought out key suggestions and recommendations. Some of the important findings of the study are: Out of seven subject areas considered for the study, multidisciplinary Journals constitute a major share in SJR; Only one Journal in multidisciplinary have an SJR score of more than one, it is same in JCR that has Impact Factor of one and above; Significant differences are found among IPP & SNIP metrics in SJR; Found significant differences in SJR scores of International level Journals when compared with the Journals published in India; Journals published from India are nowhere comparable at the international level in the HSS field; Most of the top-ranked Journals at international level are published either from USA or UK; Spearman’s rank coefficient used in the study to find out the correlations between citable documents and total cites indicates a positive relationship between citable documents and total cites. Overall the study enhances the visibility of HSS journals at the global level. It is a great pleasure in inviting you for the BOSLA Annual Lecture Series-2018 and for the celebrations of the 126th birth anniversary of the father of library science, Dr. S. R. Ranganathan on Saturday, 8th December 2018 at MMRDA, Bandra-Kurla Complex, Bandra East, Mumbai. Warm Regards to Distinguished faculties and Dear Colleagues, I have been observing the advertisement notifications for recruitment of Library staff in various institutions across the India from various means like newspapers, forums and blog etc. Nearly every advertisement notification lists one eligibility criteria (under desired or essential) as *"One year diploma in Computer applications"*. Somehow I am still wondering what diploma course will be best suited to library professionals apart from IGNOU's Distance Mode "Diploma in Library Automation and Networking". Also, while in service it is hardly possible to pursue a full-time diploma course and anyhow if someone manages to complete it a question on its authenticity will always remains poking. We all know that MOOCs are gaining momentum throughout world but they are still not recognised by Indian Education System and recruitment boards. How can libraries help Senior Citizens? There are a large number of libraries both public as well as special in every city. Funding for running the library comes from govt or similar agencies. Thus libraries do have responsibility in addition to catering to their regular customers, to others outside their ambit, who also contribute by way of taxes. One such segment of the community that would greatly benefit is the Senior citizens, if libraries extend their co-operation to them. One might think of fulfilling some sort of corporate social responsibility of a different kind. There are lots of things that libraries or librarians can do in this regard. Some of them are listed here. 1. Libraries may lend space for conducting meetings of local Senior Citizens Associations in their premises. 2. Libraries may engage senior citizens who are knowledgeable and experienced to give lectures / talks, as a sort of extension activity. 3. Libraries may exempt senior citizens from admission and other fees charged for their services or offer discounts or concessions 4. Libraries may offer opportunities to retired persons to volunteer in library work; this segment would be available relatively cheap. 5. Libraries may offer free or low cost training courses in imparting skills in using smart phone, internet etc 6. Libraries may encourage Lifelong learning activity among the elderly. These could be done: Identifying free or affordable courses to sign up; providing terminals for online learning; to be a meeting point for co-learners; provide class room facilities etc 7. Prolific readers, poets, writers, authors and others among the elderly may be encouraged to give book reviews, donate their books, poetry reading sessions, art and painting exhibitions, display their coin / philatelic collections etc 8. Retirees may be invited for several events conducted by the library by converting them into personal sponsors for specific activities. 9. Senior citizens may be approached to help in fund raising activities for special occasions. 10. Public libraries may even think of providing extension counters in retirement (gated) communities. However, while there is great value in it, there are also other, often competing, imperatives of ensuring rule of law over the internet and data, and using local and national data for encouraging domestic digital industry and for policy making and governance. It is no longer possible to speak of 'free flow of data' in any absolute sense, neither can 'data localisation' be instinctively condemned. Different data need different treatments, which can lie on a spectrum between these two ends. Dear LIS Forum Member, We request your views, feedback and suggestions for the following: The Library of the Institute of Mathematical Sciences, Chennai has over a period accumulated 50000+ bound volumes of about 600+ print journals (maths, physics and theoretical computer sciences) stored in the compact mobile racks. Of which, we have also got perpetual access rights to over 40000 volumes. We have taken a policy that we no longer bind journal issues for which we have perpetual access. In view of this and severe space constraints to store bound volumes, we are exploring options for weeding out of the bound volumes of journals. Unfortunately, there is no library weed out policy under general financial rules of government as we are a government funded institution. In the absence of established guidelines by any government agencies, are there any ways by which we can weed out library bound volumes of journals?. This is to request you to kindly share your views, suggestions and any guideline documents for library weed out policy. Empathetic behavior: Empathy allows your inner conscious to feel other’s pain as if you have pain. A library professional must respond in empathetic manner to the library users and also must try to build the enough confidence in them to use library resources & services with self-help. 3. Service before Self: A library professional should enter the library with motto “Service before Self”. In another word, five laws of library science should always remain in mind and library professional must offer himself after service to the library. 4. Tactful Approach: Library is center of service where a user approaches with different attitudes and options. A tactful approach by library professional will help to deal the various types of users with ease and can avoid inviting bad name to the profession. 5. Perseverance: It is better to knock other door if library professional cannot devote his heart and soul to the profession as library profession requires very hard work and perseverance. *AAI signs MoA with Delhi Public Library* In the endeavor for adding value to enhancement of literacy among underprivileged classes, Airports Authority of India (AAI) has signed Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) with Delhi Public Library (DPL) under the Corporate Social Responsibility initiative of AAI by contributing Rs.3.25 crore towards the purchase of five mobile vans for extending the mobile library services in slum areas and economically weaker section of society in Delhi/ NCR with 'Home to Home knock, Home to Home Book'.
