Alert Regarding: Free KOHA OPAC Mobile App

Dear All, The message below has been floated for those who are using Koha and very enthusiastic professionals who are willing to showcase as much as possible with minimum efforts. The Mobile App is not meant for your/any library by default and to get the app your library must be on some public domain name and lot of other information you need to provide through the app than the concerns will send you the app. My view is please avoid such things in the age where people are much concern about data security. My questions from the developers and you all are: 1. What if the domain name of any Koha/OPAC will change? 2. What if the database schema of koha updated? 3. What is the update policy of the said App? 4. Where is the source code to modify/improve the app by the community like Koha? 5. To whom should we contact if face any problem in the app? 6. How to use the app if many are managing the koha on Intranet only? 7. How much space etc. it consumes on the mobile and which version of android is supported. 8. Which version of Koha does it support? Sorry for my little understanding of the below Koha App but please clarify the points above. Please share this information with anyone who may be interested: What is CopyrightX: Libraries? · CopyrightX: Libraries is an affiliate course of CopyrightX which is hosted by the MIT Libraries, and is open to library, archives, and museum staff everywhere. Participants will learn the essentials of US copyright law, theory, and practice with an emphasis on issues relevant to cultural institutions, alongside a cohort of professional colleagues. It is an entirely online 12-week course comprising pre-recorded lectures, readings, and weekly seminars. What sort of time commitment should I expect? · The class runs for 12 weeks from February through early May. Each week, participants will watch an 80-minute recorded lecture, read the assigned material, and attend a 90-minute synchronous discussion section conducted via audio and text chat. The average total time commitment over the 12 week course is ~ 5 hours/week. After the 12 week course there is an intensive law-school style exam, which takes the average student ~10 hours over a four-day period. To obtain a certificate of completion, participants must both pass the exam and attend at least 10 of the 12 weekly discussion sections. When will it be? · Synchronous online seminars will meet from 10 am - 11:30 am EST/EDT (15:00 - 16:30 UTC prior to March 10th, 14:00 – 15:30 UTC after March 10th) on Fridays beginning February 1, 2019. Dear Professionals, LibTech Award – Nominate Your Library – Present Case Study – Submit Your Paper - Participate in Opinion Pole in the Selection Process Libraries are increasingly technology empowered. Judicious and insightful Investment in technologies are major strategic decisions as the rate of change and obsolescence with technologies are too high. Sharing knowledge gained and best practices followed in implementing technologies is a useful practice. To promote this sharing practice, we introduced in LTC2018 an exclusive session on. “Technology Empowered Libraries: Cases Studies in Best Practices” which is continued in LTC2019. This 90-minute session is an exciting part of the Conclave as it carries LibTech2019 award instituted since last LTC. 1. Libraries are invited to send their nominate for this session. A committee of five juries lead by Dr. Marshall Breeding, an internationally recognized library technology review expert ( https://librarytechnology.org/) will evaluate the nominations to select the best ten of them. 3. This paper first describes the four core elements of today's digital power concentration, which need to be seen in cumulation and which, seen together, are both a threat to democracy and to functioning markets. Dear Professional Friends / Seniors, I wish to draw your kind attention towards the tremendous changes taking place in the academic libraries due to the advent of technology and as a result, the library professionals are under huge pressure to implement these technologies to cope up with the present situation. We are bound to learn and implement the technology for smooth functioning of library and housekeeping operations. However, regret to mention this is happening in less percentage. Most of the library professionals are not computer savvy. Undoubtedly, most of the library professionals are struggling in implementation of technologies such as library automation, digitization, web development for information dissemination, server management, e-resource management etc. Most of the renowned publishers like ACS, IEEE Computer Society, ASME, ACM, ASCE etc. are having the concept of creating *STUDENT CHAPTERS* where students are given unique opportunity for networking, mentoring and bonding over common interest. In brief, a *STUDENT CHAPTERS* is group of students from a university / institute, college, technical colleges who assemble to organize activities related to their fields of study to share their knowledge with each other. A *STUDENT CHAPTERS* also serves as a gateway to forums, panel discussions, symposia, conferences, workshop etc. that further a student’s professional development. This provides an opportunity to students to explore more about their subject and research on particular topic. S. Raghavan obtained Master's degree in Library Science from the University of Delhi and Ph.D. from the University of Mysore. He was a Senior Fulbright scholar at UCLA, USA in 1987. Dr. Raghavan served the University of Mysore for 6 years from 1971 and moved to the University of Madras in 1977; He retired from the University of Madras as its Dean (Academic) in 2005 and joined DRTC, Indian Statistical Institute as a professor. Since 2013 he is working as a Visiting Scientist at the Centre for Knowledge Analytics. He was also a visting scientist Ontological Engineering (KAnOE) in PES Institute of Technology, Bangalore from 2013-16. In 2015 he served as a visiting professor at the Nanyang Technological University, Singapore and taught a course on Knowledge Representation and Ontology. He also served as a visiting professor at the Federal University of Minas Gerais, Brazil in 2003. He is serving as secretary of Ranganathan Centre for Information Studies and Member-Secretary of Sarada Ranganathan Endowment for Library Science. He has authored a book, edited about 18 volumes and published over 75papers. He is the Editor of the SRELS Journal of Information Management and on the editorial boards of Knowledge organization (ISKO, Germany) and Libres (NTU). *About the talk* Nations, societies and institutions of all kinds are in a state of flux because of developments in ICTs and globalization. Today’s world is more networked than ever before and countries and communities are much more interdependent on each other. The far-reaching developments brought about by technology in the past two decades have transformed the workplace, which is very different from what it was before the advent of this technology. This is true of practically every kind of institution – manufacturing industries, banks, schools, hotels, airlines, shops, governments, libraries, etc. Given this, there is naturally a growing concern of a possible mismatch between professional education programmes and the requirements of the job market. Therefore, critical attention is being paid to all aspects of higher education with a view to generate manpower with knowledge and skills required for and relevant to the emerging situation. The industry, which is the principal employer of products of professional education programmes, has, in recent years, pointed out that India’s undergraduate and graduate education programmes are too theoretical and are devoid of practical experience necessary for absorption into the industry’s workforce. Planning professional education programmes for the future require that we have an idea, even if it is not a very clear picture, of the emerging future. What makes this particularly difficult in the information and library arena is that the technologies that are driving the changes in the information arena are disruptive technologies. Education programmes need to realize the enormous and fundamental changes that have taken place in the way libraries function that impacts the nature of manpower needed to manage modern libraries in terms of knowledge and skills required. Today there are environments and workplaces outside the conventional library requiring manpower with knowledge and skills in information work and service. Planners also need to take cognizance of the broadened information environment, identify the knowledge and skills required to work in such environments and workplaces and build appropriate components into education programmes designed to train information professionals. In this lecture, the speaker proposes to briefly examine some of these issues. *About P. Sankaralingam* PS, as his colleagues and students would call him (P. Sankaralingam) was a visionary librarian and gifted teacher who was central in the creation of the Roja Muthiah Research Library (RMRL). Sankaralingam was the first Director of the Roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai, a position he held since September 1993, when the institution was founded. Prior to that appointment he was instrumental in bringing together the forces necessary in India to ensure that the collection of the late Roja Muthiah would be acquired and preserved for the use of scholars. The University of Madras generously gave Sankaralingam a leave of absence to accept the Directorship of RMRL. From 1976 he had been a faculty member in the University's Department of Library and Information Science. From 1968 through 1976, he was Assistant Librarian at the Tirunelveli Medical College, Tirunelveli, Tamil Nadu. His M.Lib.Sc <http://m.lib.sc/>. degree was from the University of Mysore in 1975. The "New Library Movement in India" is the name Sankaralingam gave to loosely confederated activities aimed at improving services and access to collections for readers. He was a central figure shaping the movement in south India. RMRL was workbench for framing and testing new approaches, approaches that already have had a dramatic impact on the visibility and organization of Tamil publications, from classical texts through less well recognized modern literature. Sankaralingam has published twenty-three papers and was involved in preparing indexes for eight books. From 1985-1991, he was joint managing editor of the land-mark Kriyavin tarkalat Tamil akarati [A Tamil - Tamil - English dictionary of contemporary Tamil] published by Cre-A: in 1992. He was also a joint editor of the 1992 publication, Cognitive paradigms in knowledge organization. His translation into Tamil of David Werner's Where there is no doctor appeared in 1984 as Taktar illata itattil and still remains a best seller. Many of Sankaralingam's students have gone on to positions of library leadership throughout India. He was revered by his students as a gifted and demanding teacher who gave special attention especially to the needs of students in financial need. Other major projects and activities in which Sankaralingam was involved, include: a project for developing a machine-readable multi-script bibliographic database of the holdings of the Dept. of Indology, French Institute of Pondicherry; a project to develop an information storage and retrieval system for the audio and video recordings available in the Archives of All India Radio and Doordarshan; and development of a morphological analyzer for Tamil. He was a founding trustee of MOZHI, a public Trust for Resource Development in Language and Culture, and held that position until becoming Director of RMRL. The RMRL Trust has instituted the "P. It is very difficult for academic libraries including University Libraries to manage the Bound Volume section and make them use by their research community. Two decades ago Bound Volumes were known as Perl of any library collection and they were a direct impact on the research output of any organization. Now they have become just a dust accumulator and are in a very bad condition in many libraries. It is the duty of Library professionals to revisit and make their Bound Volume collection relevant to their user community. Fraud accounted for some 60% of those retractions; one offender, anesthesiologist Joachim Boldt, had racked up almost 90 retractions after investigators concluded he had fabricated data and committed other ethical violations. Boldt may have even harmed patients by encouraging the adoption of an unproven surgical treatment. Science, it seemed, faced a mushrooming crisis. The alarming news came with some caveats. Although statistics were sketchy, retractions appeared to be relatively rare, involving only about two of every 10,000 papers. Sometimes the reason for the withdrawal was honest error, not deliberate fraud. And whether suspect papers were becoming more common—or journals were just getting better at recognizing and reporting them—wasn't clear. Still, the surge in retractions led many observers to call on publishers, editors, and other gatekeepers to make greater efforts to stamp out bad science. The attention also helped catalyze an effort by two longtime health journalists—Ivan Oransky and Adam Marcus, who founded the blog Retraction Watch, based in New York City—to get more insight into just how many scientific papers were being withdrawn, and why. For data engineering and data engineers, data storage and retrieval is the critical component of the pipeline together with how the data can be used and analyzed. In recent times, many new and different data storage technologies have emerged. However, which one is best suited and has the most appropriate features for data engineering? Most engineers are familiar with SQL databases, such as PostgreSQL, MSSQL, and MySQL, which are structured in relational data tables with row-oriented storage. Given how ubiquitous these databases are, we won’t discuss them today. Instead, we explore three types of alternative data storages that are growing in popularity and that have introduced different approaches to dealing with data. Within the context of data engineering, these technologies are search engines, document stores, and columnar stores. - Search engines excel at text queries. When compared to text matches in SQL databases, such as LIKE, search engines offer higher query capabilities and better performance out of the box. - Document stores provide better data schema adaptability than traditional databases. By storing the data as individual document objects, often represented as JSONs, they do not require schema predefining. - Columnar stores specialize in single column queries and value aggregations. SQL operations, such as SUM and AVG, are considerably faster in columnar stores, as data of the same column are stored closer together on the hard drive.
