Training Programme on ‘Application of ICT in Academic and Research Libraries’ (NIEPA : January 28 to February 1, 2019)

NIEPA is organizing a 5 days Training Programme on Application of ICT in Academic and Research Libraries from 28 January to 1 February 2019 at NIEPA. The Programme is designed to build the capacity of the librarians and teachers to enhance access and use of the libraries and design, transact and assess online courses in different disciplines using Moodle platform. The general objective of the programme is to raise the capacity of the teachers and librarians to use Moodle platform for effective delivery of courses in higher education in blended as well as online modes. I am happy to enclose a note, which will provide further details of the proposed Programme. I take this opportunity to request you to nominate two faculty members working in your department to participate in the proposed Programme. The particulars of the nominating faculty including their complete postal address and telephone/fax/e-mail address may kindly be conveyed to Prof. K. Srinivas, Head ICT & Project Management Unit, NIEPA at ksrinivas(a)niepa.ac.in & dsthakur(a)niepa.ac.in latest by 18 January 2019. The applications will be shortlisted on first cum first basis. The programme will be offered in a blended mode with class room face-to-face interactions and web-based online activities. The learning resources, programme activities will be available to all the participants through the NIEPA Web-based Learning Management System. To access workshop resources and actively participate in all web-based assessments participants must carry their personal laptops, Internet enabled Smart Phones and Internet Dongles. Travel assistance and local hospitality will be provided to the participants as per NIEPA rules. The Kerala Migration Survey (KMS) 2018 data is now available online for free download. Centre for Development Studies, Thiruvananthapuram initiated the first Kerala Migration Survey (KMS) in 1998 to gauge the magnitude of both internal and international migration from the state. Since then, CDS has successfully completed 7 rounds of KMS. These surveys have generated a wealth of data having immense significance. Before posting my suggestion I gave a thought, but remained silent. Being private, one is not dumping additional mail on to Forum unnecessarily On the other hand being public all will come to know that there is no need for further attempt by others. So it is left to the discretion of ILL requester. 2. Another suggestion for those libraries having access to J-Gate +. It has incorporated union catalog of University and several other libraries in the country. A link is provided as “Find-in-a-Library for 55 million articles indexed in it. One can easily find out which are the Libraries likely having the journal issue required. More importantly a request can be placed to the library of our choice directly using the e-mail proforma built in without trying trace contact details of library concerned and also type article details. NewGenLib to Koha migration scripts

Greetings to fellow professionals. I have been doing data migration for library systems for more than a decade and found very few of them similar. Even when the source and target systems are same, the configurations and policies are not. Hence it is very difficult to make a generic tool for migration from one system to another. But recently I had an opportunity to migrate a university library system from NewGenLib to Koha. This is not an opinion on any of the systems as both are very capable platforms. The decision to migrate from one system to another are many and often situational. The point of this post is that I found both systems very stable, well structured and both supporting common data standards. Thus compared with my past experience of migration from non-standard systems, this was relatively trouble-free. In fact, it reflects quite well on the standards support in NewGenLib, especially MARC21 for bibliographic data and RDBMS backend for other data. Since no single system is permanent it is always prudent to be on a system that supports established standards which is easy to migrate from, if and when needed. I have decided to make the migration related scripts public without any restrictions. I have removed the customer-specific data mapping and data cleaning sections to make it generic and suitable for simple use cases. I have made the library-specific data mapping configurable using a config file. The code is in Perl and it makes the following migrations possible: 1. Bibliographic and item holdings data. 2. Patrons data with any additional attributes (e.g. Dept, Course). 3. Circulation transactions, including circulation history.
