Re: Contents of LIS-Forum digest..." Academic libraries are getting very poor response from users. It is true. However, we have to understand the cause behind it. We as LISPs are always doing research on how to increase the response from users. Some points for the failure to attract users are found : 1. Poor infrastructure of library 2. Constraints in collection development due to lack of flow of funds. 3. During the recent times it is found that students are doing literature survey from their own desk because they have the Wi-Fi facilities. They like to learn more through electronic media. 4. Poor/Semi/Half - Qualified LISPs. (Though some may not be agreed on this point, but it is on of the prime factors) 5. Managements' indifferent / negligence behavior towards systematic library development and appointing an appropriate library professional. Thus it is better to have the option to give access to all possible public to an academic library. When a similar question was asked of University Librarian Jeffrey MacKie-Mason (UC Berkeley), his reply was 'yes.' *What about for the public?* We are a public library and, under our license, the public can come to us and access Elsevier articles on-site. A number of people in public health in the Bay Area come here to read journal articles, for example. They will also lose direct access to a 2019 publication. The main thing for the public to know is that we’re taking a major stand with the power of UC to transform the scholarly journal publishing industry for the benefit of our scholars and the public. We remain in negotiations with other publishers of UC research articles. The industry is not going to change overnight, but we want the public and the world to have access to research — to our UC research — that is funded by the public in the first place. This is great initiative, that Academic Libraries Like Calcutta University is being opened for Public. I believe all academic libraries including School, Colleges and Universities needs to be opened for public, may be on nominal charges throughout India. This step will boost Public Libraries of India and every individual will get facilities of Libraries around the country. In this connection, Commercial reading halls are emerging in the market to facilitate the users and meet their demands charging huge money. To stop this, above decision (Calcutta University is being opened for Public) is an counter attack. Even government in power needs to think and act on this. Request all other librarians to make efforts to open their libraries to public, particularly to get connected with public and maintain our (Libraries and librarians) status in the society. One Week National Workshop on Metadata Management and Open Source Discovery Systems for Libraries 24th – 29th June, 2019

INFLIBNET Centre, Gandhinagar has announced the *One Week National Workshop on Metadata Management and Open Source Discovery Systems for Libraries 24th – 29th June 2019.* *About Workshop:* The field of metadata is in transition phase, where job titles and responsibilities are making the shift from traditional cataloging to non-MARC resource description. The role of cataloguer is now changed to integrating non-MARC metadata in response to libraries' increasing focus on the collection of electronic resources and provide easy discovery of library resources to users. In addition to have knowledge of traditional cataloguing, library staff need to update themselves with knowledge of metadata/advanced metadata topics; emerging metadata standards; general programming; XML and organization of information including electronic resources. There are certain tools and techniques available for retrospective conversion of bibliographic data, such as ISISASCII, ISISMARC, MarcEdit etc., which are available in open domain or in open source. INFLIBNET Centre has also contributed an open source utility for converting Ms-Excel data into MARCXML format. In addition to metadata conversion, several open source discovery softwares are also available for providing single search option of various kind of resources available in library. It also provides option for harvesting metadata from various repositories. The Workshop includes lectures as well as extensive hands-on training which will provide both theoretical as well as practical exposure to the participants. The participants will get fair idea and ability to convert various types of bibliographic data such as books, journal articles, theses, etc., into standardized format i.e. MARC21. The participants will also learn basics of XML and XSL for mapping different metadata into a single indexed format. The Workshop will provide extensive training on installation and configuration of above mentioned softwares and VuFind open source software which will enable participants to independently work on conversion of bibliographic data and managing metadata. *Following topics will be covered in the workshop: * - Introduction to Metadata and Metadata Standards; - Fundamentals of Retrospective Conversion (Theory); - Use of Copy Cataloguing Process from External Sources - Use of XL2MARCXML Utility developed by INFLIBNET Centre; - Installation and Configuration of ISISMARC and MarcEdit; - Data Migration from MARC21 to Excel and Excel to MARC21 using MARCEdit - Conversion of Multi-Lingual Bibliographic Data; - Verification/ Validation of MARC records; - Metadata Harvesting through OAI-PMH; - Understanding of Linux Commands, XML and XSL; - Open Source Discovery Tools/Softwares; - Installation and customization of VuFind; and - Mapping and importing different category of items to VuFind. *Target Audience* Library professionals working in universities/colleges who are interested in retrospective conversion of bibliographic data, students, information scientists, system administrators, database managers and others with similar domain. *Pre-requisite* Basics of metadata, operating knowledge of Ms-Excel, basic knowledge of MARC21. *Venue* The Training programme will be conducted at Information and Library Network Centre, An IUC of University Grants Commission, Infocity, Gandhinagar-382007, Gujarat, India. *Workshop Fee* The registration fee is Rs. 7,080.00 (Rupees Seven Thousand Eighty only) per person without accommodation and Rs. 10,810.00 (Rupees Ten Thousand Eight hundred Ten only) with accommodation which is inclusive of GST rates. It covers the cost of training programme kit containing training materials, breakfast, lunch and dinner during the training period. The payment should be made through Demand Draft in favour of INFLIBNET Centre payable at Gandhinagar along with filled-in registration form. Fee is non-refundable and non-adjustable. The Centre also accepts payment by NEFT /RTGS for the workshop. Reading Mascot for India What: Design a mascot for India which inspires everyone to read. Who can participate: Any school-going child in India can participate. No registration fee. How to participate: Step 1: Register online at www.slaindia.org Step 2: Design a Reading Mascot (paper size A4, any medium) with any or all of the key ideas like books, reading, literacy, knowledge, information, libraries, etc. Step 3: Send your creation to SLA.
