All LIS Professionals It is really very sad news that Dr. H.K.Kaul, Founder Director of DELNET is no more. He is the first in the country to start a Private Library Network nation wide and his enterprise is flourishing with devoted service to the profession. His book on Networking of Libraries, outcome of his Ph.D. work is even today a piece of work to reckon with and serves as an authentic text on the subject. On behalf of Karnataka State Library Association, as President and inclusive all office bearers and Members condole the demise of Dr. Kaul. We have really lost an innovator and veteran of the profession. We pray God Almighty his Soul Rest in Peace. It is indeed a very sad news to the entire Library fraternity of India. Dr Kaul’s contributions towards library networking, resource sharing and the NACLIN platform is primordial and commendable, which has helped many of our young LIS professionals to grow. As a friend I noticed that he is a humble, down to earth and unassuming personality. All of us really miss him. May his soul rest in peace. LIS Academy Virtual Conference - Call for papers

Dear Professional Friends, The entire country has been under the Lockdown status due to Covid-19 Pandemic disease. At this juncture, we need to maintain social distance and stay safe. Due to this lockdown status, Education Institutions are closed, and the Librarians confined to the empty Libraries and the students to their houses. The LIS Academy had earlier announced it's National Conference at the University of Hyderabad, Hyderabad, from 27-29 August 2020. Unfortunately, due to the mass spreading of pandemic COVID-19 disease across the country, the organizers have planned to organize a Virtual Conference from LIS Academy Studio on the same dates. Online Virtual LISACON-2020 The LISACON-2020 Conference will now be held in a Virtual Mode operated from LIS Academy. All the Conference's activities will be web-streamed, and the paper presenters will be allowed to present their papers from their places through Video Recording. The Conference Venue will be created with a studio. Only Plenary speakers and Panel Members will be invited for their physical presence. However, if they are unable to attend physically, they can also address their paper through a webinar. The entire Conference will be held on the scheduled three days, and every day there will be two sessions. Each session will consist of 90 minutes with six invited paper presenters and a Plenary Speaker who will moderate the session. Papers are invited from the professionals, and the best six papers fitting to the theme and cleared through the peer review process will be selected for presentation at the Conference. Accepted Paper Presenters will be treated as Invited Speakers. They will be paid Rs.2000 towards Cash prize, free registration, a memento, and a certificate of appreciation. Plenary Speaker will be paid an honorarium of Rs.5000, a certificate of appreciation and a Memento. The selected presenter will have to share his/her PPT. After scrutiny, they will be asked to create a video for 10 minutes using a zoom platform or any other platform with HD quality MPEG-4 format videos. Conference Theme: Reinventing Excellence in Librarianship Excellence is about being the best, striving to be better, and delivering quality services. Libraries are universally considered as social institutions, which facilitate acquisition and dissemination of knowledge. Library professionals are eﬃciently serving the information needs of end-users by adopting new tools, techniques, and technologies from time to time. The advent of digital technologies has brought in disruptive changes in all spheres of the library. Today's library is less about what we have for users and more about what we do for users. Librarianship has to reinvent and reposition itself to achieve excellence. The librarianship needs to rethink innovative content acquisition models, out of the box thinking in extending library services, leveraging technologies, and new modes of reaching the user community. Abstract of the talk: The Open Access (OA) movement has been going through two decades of the most highly debated evolution. Various initiatives by all stakeholders - scholarly community, authors, publishers, libraries, funding agencies, and the Government - involved in the movement have brought in changes in journal publishing today. The number of open access journals outnumbers the subscription journals. Even in total article views, OA has overtaken subscription journals. Currently, 31% of all articles are available as OA and 52% of article views are from OA journals. Yet, all these initiatives and results have been limited in their impact. The movement's goal post of 100% OA for scholarly communication is still not in sight. On the contrary, libraries and their consortia models continue to spend a significant amount of their budget on their subscriptions besides additional spending by authors on Article Processing Charges (APC). New business models like Plan S are being talked about with no global consensus emerging. The lecture will focus on the critical issues at the heart of the movement such as the institutional repositories (IRs), OA publishing models, copyright conflicts, challenges of finding a sustainable business model and accelerated role of libraries. The speaker proposes to pose and debate on the question - Is there a disruptive OA model in the reckoning? The lecture will also address the Indian scenario and the challenges it poses for Indian scholarly publishing to become an integral part of global OA models. About the speaker Shri. N V Sathyanarayana is a former librarian, information entrepreneur, and information services and products developer rolled into one. He is the Founder Director of Informatics India Ltd., - a leading Information Products and Services Company, established in 1980. Currently, he is the Chairman and of Informatics. Shri Sathyanaraya started his career as a librarian and worked in institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, HMT, Bangalore, and Smith Kline & French, Bangalore for seven years before promoting his brainchild Informatics. He is also associated with several professional/academic bodies connected with the LIS profession and the information industry. To mention a few: Infotex'93; First National Conference on Digital Libraries (in India) in 1996, Bangalore; Infovision 2005, the first International Information Industry Summit, Bangalore. He is the recipient of the Young Information Scientist Award (1991). The Government of Karnataka conferred on him the Best Librarian Award (2006). The lecture will be presided over by: Professor Subbiah Arunachalam, Visiting Professor, DST Centre for Policy Research, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. About Professor Arunachalam Prof. S. Zotero reference management tool has no Debian/Redhat package for installation. Users had to install from source. Installation from source is not easy for Linux newbies. Now Zotero snaps packaging available. Snap is a software package management and deployment system developed by Canonical (Mother organisation of Ubuntu Linux). It's easy to deploy applications using the Snap tool. Snap package management system can work with most Linux distributions (e.g. Debian, Ubuntu, Fedora, Arch). Packages are called 'snaps' and the package management tool called 'snapd'. Linux users have to install the snapd tool in Linux to install applications in the snap repository. Install Snap sudo apt update sudo apt install snapd Restart the computer after the installation of snapd. Install Zotero using snap Zotero is a free, easy-to-use tool to help you collect, organise, cite, and share your research sources. Abstract of the talk: The Open Access (OA) movement has been going through two decades of the most highly debated evolution. Various initiatives by all stakeholders – scholarly community, authors, publishers, libraries, funding agencies, and the Government – involved in the movement have brought in changes in journal publishing today. The number of open access journals outnumbers the subscription journals. Even in total article views, OA has overtaken subscription journals. Currently, 31% of all articles are available as OA and 52% of article views are from OA journals. Yet, all these initiatives and results have been limited in their impact. The movement’s goal post of 100% OA for scholarly communication is still not in sight. On the contrary, libraries and their consortia models continue to spend a significant amount of their budget on their subscriptions besides additional spending by authors on Article Processing Charges (APC). New business models like Plan S are being talked about with no global consensus emerging. The lecture will focus on the critical issues at the heart of the movement such as the institutional repositories (IRs), OA publishing models, copyright conflicts, challenges of finding a sustainable business model and accelerated role of libraries. The speaker proposes to pose and debate on the question – Is there a disruptive OA model in the reckoning? The lecture will also address the Indian scenario and the challenges it poses for Indian scholarly publishing to become an integral part of global OA models. About the speaker: Shri. N V Sathyanarayana is a former librarian, information entrepreneur, and information services and products developer rolled into one. He is the Founder Director of Informatics India Ltd., – a leading Information Products and Services Company, established in 1980. Currently, he is the Chairman and of Informatics. Shri Sathyanaraya started his career as a librarian and worked in institutions such as the Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, HMT, Bangalore, and Smith Kline & French, Bangalore for seven years before promoting his brainchild Informatics. He is also associated with several professional/academic bodies connected with the LIS profession and the information industry. The findings are part of the REopening Archives, Libraries, and Museums (REALM) Project (https://www.webjunction.org/explore-topics/COVID-19-research-project.html) designed to generate scientific information to support the handling of core museum, library, and archival materials as these institutions begin to resume operations and reopen to the public. The first phase of the research is focusing on commonly found and frequently handled materials, especially in U.S. public libraries. Over the past few weeks, scientists at Battelle tested the virus on a variety of surfaces, in environments with standard temperature and relative humidity conditions typically found in air-conditioned office space. Materials tested in phase one included the cover of hardcover books (buckram cloth), the cover of softback books, plain paper pages inside a closed book, mylar protective book cover jackets, and plastic DVD cases. Battelle tests found the virus undetectable after one day on the covers of hardback and softback books as well as the DVD case. The virus was undetectable on the paper inside of a book and mylar book jackets after three days. “It’s below the limit of detection on our viability assay,” said Battelle Principal Research Scientist Will Richter. Lab testing of physical items followed literature reviews conducted by Battelle to help define the scope of the project’s research and the information needs of libraries, archives, and museums. Last week, the REALM Project released “Systematic Literature Review of SARS-CoV-2: Spread, Environmental Attenuation, Prevention, and Decontamination,” prepared by Battelle. This is an in-depth review of published literature on virus transmission, attenuation, and decontamination methods that can inform discussion and decisions about operations in archives, libraries, and museums. “Scientific research is essential to answer questions about the spread of the coronavirus on materials that are ever-present in our nation’s libraries, archives, and museums,” said IMLS Director Crosby Kemper. “We recognized the need to test specific items and surfaces as these organizations are now reopening, asking: How can we mitigate risk to staff? How should patrons and visitors handle books, touchable exhibits, or DVD cases? Our aim was to equip America's libraries, archives, and museums with information to help them do what they do best: continue serving their communities. I am so pleased and hopeful that this critical work will be reaching the people who need it." “Results from this ongoing research project will help libraries, archives and museums plan with greater confidence at a difficult time,” said Skip Prichard, OCLC President and CEO. “Although there are various sources of general information about handling materials in the time of COVID-19, this project is designed specifically to test materials and provide useful science-based information to these institutions. Equipped with this critical information, they will be better able to determine measures they can take to mitigate exposure to staff and the communities they serve.” “Any library worker would agree that people make good decisions when their decisions are based on facts and evidence,” said Nate Hill, Executive Director, Metropolitan New York Library Council and member of the REALM Project Steering Committee. “The output of the REALM Project, both the systematic literature review and the lab test results, give library workers the information they need to make practical, informed decisions as they reopen their spaces and resume their services.” Battelle will be initiating lab testing on an additional five materials this month, with results expected by the end of July. Examples of public library reopening plans are being collected, curated, and shared to the website this week. The research reports will inform development of toolkit resources, content, and programming that will help translate the findings for real-world applications in museums, libraries, and archives. “As museums across the country draft their reopening plans, we know that our exhibitions and galleries contain a vast variety of materials that are not addressed in state and federal public health guidelines,” said Carole Charnow, President and Chief Executive Officer, Boston Children's Museum and member of the REALM Operations Working Group. “Therefore, we need up to date, science-based information specific to museums. For those of us that are hands-on, interactive institutions, this is especially critical. The REALM Project is providing the invaluable evidence-based information museum professionals need in order to ensure the highest possible standards of safety for our staff and visitors.” The REALM Project is supported by the Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS), the primary source of federal funding for museums and libraries; and OCLC, a nonprofit library technology and research organization; in partnership with Battelle, a not-for-profit global scientific research and development organization.
