Dear Friends and Professionals, I am really being pained and shocked to hear the news of the sad demise of Dr. H Anil Kumar, Librarian, Vikram Sarabhai Library, IIM Ahmedabad. This is a great loss to the library fraternity. Myself along with my two classmates had an opportunity to work along with him. After completion of our Master's degree, We have started our career as a trainee in VSL, IIM-A. We had learnt a lot by working in each and every section of the library and I particularly mention the dedication of VSL staff towards reaching library services to end users. We were 08 trainees came from the different part of the country and seeing their dedication to work in regular activities has changed our mindset and built a strength and confident to provide the best services as much as we can. After giving services and heard a good feedback and opinion from the students has motivated us to work even more. Whenever query comes whether day or night we were always active and tried to satisfied users immediately. Behind all these activities there is one and only army man is our respected Dr H. Anil Kumar Sir. He has a passionate, humble and committed professional, down to earth and keeping a smiling face always in his face will motivate us to talk and discuss. Anil sir has given us an equal priority to everyone to give their suggestion towards library implementation, Many times he involved himself with us to discuss and share his rich experiences to us. One thing I would like to say that, VSL IIMA has created a best platform for our career growth and whatever we are today because of all his selflessness teaching and guidance. But a coincidence is he has passed away unexpectedly on the same day (July 17, 1967 - July 17, 2020) of his birth. Six years ago we had celebrated but unfortunately, he is no more. On behalf of all our former trainees, I pray the Almighty to give enough strength to bear the loss of his bereaved family and may his soul rest in peace. Few words for Shri H Anil Kumar <https://www.facebook.com/hanil.kumar.3?__cft__[0]=AZX02qzeUgINnRBym2if8gHYP…> He was much more than a Librarian, he was also...an Entrepreneur...a Mentor...an Innovator.. a Perfectionist...an Administrator...an Academician.. a Leader..an Advisor.. a Great Networker.. an out of the box Thinker.. a Founding team member of iCreate...an extremely affectionate and humble human being ... It is a personal and permanent loss for me and the whole family of RapidRadio. Everything that we know in the library market other than the word library has been taught by him. He picked up RapidRadio from NirmaLabs (which is now iCreate) and said why don't you guys develop RFID hardware for libraries and he helped us transform from a young technical team to a professional company in the library market competing with global giants today. Today RapidRadio has lost a father/mentor and I have lost a Guru/Friend. Personally i have known him from 2004 the day when i had joined NirmaLabs and since then it has never been more than a week when we have not interacted which continued until lately when he was not keeping well. He is one of the biggest reasons for RapidRadio's success & why RapidRadio is what it is today. Unfortunately he never gave an opportunity to thank him publicly for his contribution to RapidRadio due to conflict of interest. Sir...we will miss you from the bottom of our hearts in every success that we achieve in future. Today when i see his facebook wall, I can see maximum posts from various library trainees who had an opportunity to work under him at various libraries. It is the biggest proof that he loved to be with young minds and nurture them to a growth path. A Step into any library in future is going to remind us about you and your learnings which has shaped us as a team...We are indebted to all your contributions and would try to repay by working for the library fraternity. Very shocking news. We lost our great library professional Dr. H Anil Kumar, Librarian, IIM, Ahmedabad due to COVID on his birthday. He was a wonderful person, very innovative Librarian, whenever he was speaking, he was focusing to content only, a Guru for library professionals. He was very friendly, a lovable person and a good human being. He was instrumental for setting up the new state-of-the-art library and renovation of the existing one. As an unbiased person, he was exemplary for the library profession both for academic and administrator works. Dear Colleagues, I am deeply saddened and shocked to hear about the sudden demise of Dr. H Anil Kumar, Librarian, Vikram Sarabhai Library, Indian Institute of Management, Ahmedabad on 17th July 2020 (Friday). Anil was at the prime period of his professional career, and with his unfortunate, untimely and unexpected passing, we have lost an extraordinary library leader, and a great human being, who was loved by all in the profession as well as from outside. Anil was one of the founding members of MANLIBNET, a strong pillar of the IIM Libraries Consortium, and an active member of the Asia Pacific Business School Librarians Group (APBSLG - in which IIMA, IIMK and ISB are members) and immensely contributed by engaging in constructive discussions/suggestions, through his thought provoking/insightful articles, and by holding/participating in highly impactful conferences/workshops/webinars. He was also serving in the advisory boards of several universities, institutions, professional associations and international publishing firms. Anil stood out in the professional circles because of his brilliant and intelligent discourses/debates, and was respected by all who have known him. He was known for his upright, bold and relentless stands always - no matter what the consequences, be. Anil has contributed immensely to all the libraries that he has worked in, and especially the Vikram Sarabhai Library at IIMA, which he has re-engineered and transformed into a world class library/information/innovation center. Anil has quite successfully groomed a number of start ups in the country, which has brought numerous laurels and respect to the profession too. He was a passionate, compassionate and committed professional and became a role model. At this moment of extreme grief, let us pray to God for His Soul to Rest in Peace and give courage and strength to his family and colleagues to bear the irreparable loss. Later he moved to IIM-A the most coveted position every one desired to get. Very recently Dr. Anil presented a Webinar session under KALA and it was one of the most enchanting lecture and he gave a new perspective for what is "Physical Library" and how to reorient it in the times of ICT boom. He also recalled his close association with KALA and thanked it for giving him required career guidance. It is very difficult here to present all his achievements in this short span. We happen to visit him at Ahemadabad at his home and it was coming together and pleasant time for all of us. With deep sense of sorrow and horrid feeling that Corona has snatched away one of the gifted professional with several years of his services available, We on behalf of Karnataka State Library Association, President, Secretary and other members of the EC and Governing Council and all Members and also on behalf of the Department of Library and Information Science, Bangalore University, as its former Head, convey our heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family, in particular his beloved Wife, Dr. Nishtha Anil Kumar. Dear All, With a deep senseof sorrow, I inform you about the passing away of Mr. J. Harishankar (age 65years), formerly Professional Assistant, Ramesh Mohan Library, English andForeign Languages University, Hyderabad, Telangana State, last Sunday, July 5, 2020due to cardiac arrest. He retired from EFLU in 2015 after serving it for overthree and half decades. With thesudden departure of Harishankar, I lost a dear friend, an association of morethan four decades. He provided selflessly to me great support and invaluablecounsel, both professionally and personally. In recent years, I promised tomeet him several times but could not keep my word. His sudden exit is so shocking. I have neverfound him get angry or annoyed. A pleasant personality to work with, he spread cheerfulnessand peace all around. He always advocated restraint whenever there wereconflicts and believed in joining hearts. True to library spirit, he wasneutral to the core and did not belong to any group. He was loved by one andall. He was very much concerned about the future of youngsters he wasassociated with on the EFLU campus and helped many of them settle in theirlife. He used to say several times: “I have to put these boys in some job. Ihave to request the Professors I know. They will definitely help.” He was afather figure and guiding light to several youngsters. They used to rush to himin the library whenever they faced any problem and he invariably used toprovide the necessary relief. Harishankar was very much concerned about the educationand health of his children and struggled very hard in bringing them up. Afterjoining in service, he improved his educational qualifications in LIS. I can neverforget the love shown by him towards me and all members of our library family. Heinvited us innumerable times to his home and offered tasty food cooked by hisdevoted wife. He used to take us to marriage feasts of his family/relatives andpersonally saw to it that we had the best food in an exclusive setting. Qualitieswhich endeared me to Harishankar were his empathy, helpfulness, courtesy and cheerfulness.He did not implement the library rules mechanically and heartlessly. It was ajoy to see the reader services provided by him in the Ramesh Mohan Library. Afew research scholars used to visit the library without proper recommendationletter from their research supervisor. He never turned them away and was alwayshelpful and used to ensure that they received the documents there were lookingfor—helping in locating documents, photocopying, etc. His admirers were notlimited to the faculty, students and non-teaching staff of EFLU but severalscholars belonging to various universities from all parts of India. He becameso popular that the word spread: “If Harishankar is at the issue counter in thelibrary, you need not worry. You will get the documents you want.” He played avital role in building up the image of the Ramesh Mohan Library. For severalyears, he actively participated in timely production of documentation bulletinsin English Language Teaching, Linguistics, and Literature, which were highlyappreciated by the faculty and research scholars. Last Saturdaymorning, Dr. Murugesan, who did PhD from EFLU, rang me up from Thiruchirapallyto alert me about the Guru Pournima celebrations of Sri Ramanasramam. Oneinvariable question he asks whenever he calls me was: “How is Harishankar, Sir?”.Dr. Murugesan is just one of the countless scholars whom Harishankar served withtotal dedication selflessly and great passion. In a recent phone call, Dr.Murugesan mentioned with a great sense of gratitude how he can never forget thehelp provided by Harishankar at the time of submission of his doctoral thesis. I offer myheartfelt condolences to the members of the bereaved family and pray to God togive them strength to bear with this irreparable loss. Based on our research in rural and urban India, Dr. Devendra Potnis, who is an Associate Professor at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville, USA, and I have developed a unified mobile, financial, and information literacy toolkit for public librarians who can use this toolkit to assess and enhance the “mobile payment readiness” of millions of people interested in using mobile phones for carrying out financial transactions in India. Public libraries can reinvent themselves to be more relevant for their local communities by helping their patrons use mobile phones for carrying out financial transactions. This toolkit is the result of a research project funded by ALISE and OCLC. Using our toolkit, public libraries in India can help the Government of India for achieving a cashless economy envisioned as part of the Digital India Programme. If public libraries decide to use our toolkit, it can change their perceived image and utility among the public. Public libraries could gain more support from their local communities and organizations for funding, one of the chronic challenges experienced by libraries in India. Controlled Digital Lending - CDL - India?

Dear Professional Colleagues, I hope many of you are aware of Controlled Digital Lending (CDL) - https://controlleddigitallending.org. CDL allows libraries to lend digital copy of a book to its patrons for a particular period, as long as they have the same book in physical format. Recently Archive.org had a national emergency library under this initiative 3-4 libraries made their digital resources available to everyone to borrow for a particular period of time. Now a few publishers have filed a lawsuit against the Internet Archive https://www.infodocket.com/2020/06/10/temporary-national-emergency-library-…. As a result, the internet archive has moved the emergency library to https://openlibrary.org/, you can still borrow books for one hour. Earlier it was allowed to hold for 14 days upto 10 books. This has paved the way for many library patrons to access resources. My question is whether our country IPR has any provision for such services that can be offered by libraries in India. Especially during this covid situation where patrons can't have access to physical resources, whether same physical resources can be made available under controlled digital lending (CDL) scheme? Is CDL far from reach in our country. Kaul Dr Kaul’s passing away is indeed shocking. He was one of the few outstanding librarians we have seen. On every occasion, he used to uphold the dignity of the LIS profession. We could see in him an excellent librarian, a poet, a scholar, an author and a great human being. A visionary, he has built Delnet, which is an envious institution in a sprawling campus with hostels, conference facilities and office infrastructure which we are all proud of. A keen networker, he has developed a huge circle of contacts, both in India and abroad, which he used for the development of the profession. I pray the almighty for his soul to rest in peace and bestow courage to his family to bear the loss. M. Sad demise of Dr. Kaul is a shocking news today. A gracious gentleman and a passionate professional is no more. The DELNET he established and developed as a a long sustaining institution, celebrating is the icon of his professional achievement. The credit of institutionalising nation-wide inter-library lending goes to him. He is an excellant example of successful social enrepreneurship in LIS profession. May his soul rest in peace. |N. V.
