Now he's appealing for the public's help so that he can maintain and classify his collection. Dear Library Professionals: I deeply regret to inform you that one of our esteemed friends Shri G R Deshmukh, passed away on 7th November,2020 at Nagpur. He served at Central Soil and Water Conservation Research and Training Institute, ICAR, Dehradun for about two decades and shifted to National Bureau of Soil Survey and Land Use Planning, ICAR, Nagpur from where he retired as Chief Technical Officer (Library) during 2011. He was my colleague at Nagpur and took over charge of the Library and Documentation Unit after I shifted to RRI, Bengaluru. He was a wonderful person and an excellent library professional. With regards -- hrmohan Announcement on the lecture series ============================== Online introductory lectures on quantum computing from 6 November No previous knowledge of quantum physics is required to follow these open, free lectures on quantum computing A series of weekly lectures on the basics of quantum computing will be broadcast via webcast starting 6 November 2020 at 10.30 a.m. New lectures will be broadcast each Friday of the next seven weeks. The talks will focus on the practical aspects of quantum computing and are organised by CERN openlab and the CERN Quantum Technology Initiative. They will be given by Elias Fernandez-Combarro Alvarez, an associate professor in the Computer Science Department at the University of Oviedo in Spain since 2009 and a cooperation associate at CERN since earlier this year. Quantum computing is one the most promising new trends in information processing. This course introduces basic concepts of the quantum circuit model (qubits, gates and measures) and important quantum algorithms and protocols, including those that can be implemented with a few qubits (BB84, quantum teleportation, superdense coding, etc.), as well as those that require multi-qubit systems (Deutsch-Jozsa, Grover, Shor, etc.). Some of the most recent applications of quantum computing in the fields of optimisation and simulation will be addressed (with special emphasis on the use of quantum annealing, the quantum approximate optimisation algorithm and the variational quantum eigensolver) along with quantum machine learning (for instance, through the use of quantum support vector machines and quantum variational classifiers). Examples of how these techniques can be used in chemistry simulations and high-energy physics problems will also be provided. Beyond the practical aspects of quantum computing, the course will cover the implementation of algorithms in quantum simulators and actual quantum computers (such as the ones available through the IBM Quantum Experience and D-Wave Leap). No previous knowledge of quantum physics is required and only a good command of basic linear algebra is necessary. Some familiarity with the Python programming language would be helpful, but is also not required. Individual links to each lecture are provided below. We want to make the industry aware that universities, schools, industries, and libraries worldwide are facing significant budget cuts for the next fiscal year as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, and that library subscription is an area that is being looked at for potential savings. The IATUL (International Association of University Libraries) Special Interest Group - Metrics and Research Impact (SIG-MaRI) launched a self-paced professional development program, IATUL Research Impact Things ( https://iatulimpactthings.info/) in Oct 2020. SIG-MaRI invites you to review, reuse, and share this with your colleagues, available openly under a Creative Commons Attribution ShareAlike license. In the last few years, we saw libraries across the world take on key roles in driving research initiatives, leading to the creation of research support positions and the role of liaison librarians also shifting. The IATUL SIG-MaRI recognized the lack of formal training and development programs to upskill staff transitioning into research support roles and developed the tool to help fill this gap. IATUL member institution the University of New South Wales (UNSW) Library launched the 10 Research Impact Things in 2019 which aimed to develop foundational skills in research impact across the Library based on the bibliometric capabilities framework. The IATUL SIG-MaRI formed a project team led by Curtin University Library, adapted and significantly revised the UNSW program for the broader IATUL members and beyond as a self-paced training and development tool.
