To Library Professions throughout India: Marshall Breeding is collecting data for the 2020 International Library Automation Perceptions survey conducted through Library Technology Guides. This survey is an important opportunity for Indian libraries to be well represented in this international report reflects the effectiveness of library automation systems. Please also distribute this request to any other related lists or forums to increase the number of responses from libraries in India. The survey includes libraries using both open source systems as well as proprietary products. This survey, now in its fourteenth annual iteration, provides an important opportunity for libraries to register their perceptions of the strategic automation products they use, organizations that provide these products, and the quality of support delivered. The survey also probes at considerations for migrating to new systems and the level of interest in open source products. While the numeric rating scales support the statistical results of the study, the narrative comments provide even more interesting insight into the current state of library automation satisfaction. Comments will be published in the survey results, though redacted to conceal any text that might identify the individual or organization responding. Please help your fellow libraries who might be in the process of evaluating library automation options by responding to the survey. Any information regarding vendor performance and product quality can be helpful when making strategic decisions regarding automation alternatives. A large number of responses strengthen the impact of the survey and the subsequent report. This survey also provides constructive criticism to the vendors involved to help them address any prevailing issues or concerns. These spaces have contributed to the development of a society. Through its interactions, the broader society also realizes the importance of these spaces. But these spaces are becoming vulnerable due to various reasons. The Jaffna Public Library in Sri Lanka, for instance, was deliberately burned down in 1981. This erasure of collective memory was and is still mourned. It becomes imperative to safeguard these spaces and its content for what it contains and what it means. What does happen to the knowledge captured in a collection like the Jaffna Public Library that is now lost forever? And what is the response of a wider Tamil diaspora to cultural losses like this? Public libraries come in all shapes and sizes, and with their own unique histories. Roja Muthiah, whose collections led to the formation of the Roja Muthiah Research Library in Chennai, has to be remembered for his extraordinary efforts in the preservation of thousands of rare volumes, all starting with scouring for ideas for his sign-board painting business. What did he think when he started collecting fifty years ago? And now in the digital world, how do we think we could build an archive or a special collection in a public library? Through the histories of two public libraries and the environments they foster, I plan to talk about the challenges and taking forward the collection building exercise. This should reflect the history of preservation and future of libraries. The role of a public library needs to be perceived just not for its content but also for the spirit in which it exists. *Bio:* Sundar Ganesan is currently the Director of the Roja Muthiah Research Library <http://rmrl.in/>, and has been at the library since its inception in 1994. Trained as an archivist, he has worked on a number of preservation projects with grants from the National Endowment for Humanities, Wellcome Institute for the History of Understanding Medicine, Mellon Foundation, Ford Foundation and the Endangered Archives Programme. The Central Library is fully computerized, using state of the art Integrated Library Management System and successfully running the RFID system from over a decade. Users have the freedom to self-Check-in or Check-out, round the clock using its RFID system as it remains open round the clock. We have our own DSpace based Institutional Repository, and all our Theses have been digitized and made accessible through the IR/NDLI/WebOPAC/Discovery Service/Library App platform. Nature journals reveal open-access terms Spurred by the open-access (OA) initiative Plan S, publisher Springer Nature has announced how scientists can make their papers in its most selective titles free to read as soon as they are published. From 2021, the publisher will charge €9,500, US$11,390 or £8,290 to make a paper OA in Nature and 32 other journals that currently keep most of their articles behind paywalls and are financed by subscriptions. Mr. Pattanshetti's Demise

To All LIS Professionals I am very sorry to inform you that former Librarian of Bangalore University Library, Mr. C.K. Pattanashetti, passed away yesterday i.e on 22nd November 2020 due to massive heart attack. Mr. Pattanshetti, one of the most humble professional and a down to earth person held the position of heading the library during its most critical periods and also had shouldered the responsibility of teaching when there were no permanent teachers in the Department. Coming from Belgaum districts his father was a school teacher and had his Library Science diploma (PG) from Baroda and so Mr. Pattanshetti was a very fluent in Gujarati language. For a short period he served as Librarian of College of Education, Belgaum. He later completed his MLISc from Bangalore University and serviced the University library which was then spread in two campuses. Very knowledgeable person also served in the Dept. of Public Libraries associated with veterans like Sri G.M.Patil, former curator of Libraries Karnataka, Mr. N.D.Bagari, former State Librarian, Prof. P.K.Patil, Prof. K.S.Deshpande who headed the Bangalore University Library for a term.I was one of his close associate, and knew him closely since 1980s when I moved to Bangalore then to Bangalore University, in 1985. Mr. Pattashetti had lost his wife long ago, he is survived by his three sons all are well placed in life. On behalf all LIS Fraternity and on my personal behalf I convey our heartfelt condolences and pray all mighty to his to SOUL REST IN PEACE (RIP) and also our consolation to his family to bear this loss. Dear professional friends, LTC 2021 Pre-Conclave Lecture 2 on “Digital Libraries and Research Data Management” is round the corner! As science moves towards a data-intensive and collaborative approach, digital technologies have both strengthened the power and reach of data and raised new challenges for the research community. The emerging data-intensive research paradigm has been called the “fourth paradigm” of scientific method and encompasses all fields as it is imperative for researchers to be able to collect, analyze, share, and effectively manage and preserve research data. Scientists and institutions confront many challenges in their preservation for long term use while keeping up with the evolving data standards. Effectively sharing data while enforcing some restrictions, and overcoming obstacles to data sharing and data reuse is difficult. Inadequate data management processes in addition to lack of institutional policies and infrastructure are some of the critical issues. Academic/research libraries are considered to be most suitably placed to get involved in supporting their institutions in this endeavour of building appropriate cyber infrastructures involving all the stakeholders—researchers, funding agencies, scholarly communication systems, and others. Although libraries are aware of their potential role in research data management and have begun or at least considered data management services, not all libraries are appropriately positioned due to the different perceptions and needs related to data management at the institutional level, which vary with institutional capacities, boundaries, and policies Research Data Management has emerged as a special interest group consisting of diverse disciplinary groups—data scientists, scientists, and the library and information scientists. LTC 2021 on “eScience and Digital Libraries: Building Communities for Collaboration” purports to align different perceptions and perspectives and create a platform for conversations and collaborations. LTC 2021 is an annual event, 5th in the series, organized by Informatics India Ltd., in association with: * The National Institute for Advanced Studies (NIAS), Bangalore * CSIR Fourth Paradigm Institute, Bangalore; and * Rajiv Gandhi University of Health Sciences, Bangalore.
