Google boosts enterprise search appliance

Google Search Appliance GB-1001 supports five times the document capacity of the previous version, expanding from 300,000 documents to 1.5 million, according to Dave Girouard, general manager of enterprise at Google. Software enhancements include a continuous crawl feature that scans and indexes content continually rather than the previous batch crawling function. "Now it is always crawling documents and verifying if a document has changed. The result is that content is much fresher. It is a matter of minutes between a change and the update of the system," Girouard said. The updated appliance also bolsters security with added support for HTML-forms-based single sign-on. This feature allows the appliance to validate corporate user rights so that users will see only the search results they have access to, Girouard said. Another software enhancement, dubbed unlimited collections, allows IT managers to administer multiple appliances separately and tailor indexes for different departments. Web Feeds for E-Journal Issue Notification and Local OPAC/ILS Holdings?

Date: Sun, 13 Jun 2004 12:00:28 -0500 From: Gerry Mckiernan <gerrymck(a)iastate.edu> It has occurred to me that Web feeds (RSS, [ http://www.libraryjournal.com/article/CA296443 ], Atom [ http://www.atomenabled.org/ ], Other(s)?) hold the potential of providing not only publication notification to institutional (or individual) subscribers for current electronic journal issues, but also could serve as the mechanism by which local holdings for the e-journal could be seamlessly updated within the local OPAC/ILS. Thanks to Owen Stephens I have learned that the Library of Royal Holloway, University of London, Egham, Surrey, provides not only RSS feeds for all new issues of subscribed [e-]journals, but to individual e-journal titles as well. My new RSS(sm) registry includes entries each of these types of public e-journal issue feeds: [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/RSS2.htm#NewJournalIssues ] In my New World View, institutional subscribers to an e-journal could also be 'subscribed' to the associated Web feed for _each_ e-title by the publisher/vendor. Such eFeed subscriptions could be a Package Deal: a selected Feed Reader of a library's choice (e.g., Pluck [ http://www.pluck.com/ ] provided by a journal vendor (e.g., EBSCO, Swets, etc.) fully populated with the Web feeds addresses for each e-title. [There are of course, other possible scenarios; for example, a Third Party Service could serve as an Aggregator for many e-journal publishers, vendors, etc.][Do I Smell a Business Opportunity or What? [:-)]. Upon publication/release of a new e-journal issue, the local reader would be updated in its next cycle. Such entries would not only be made available through a local New Journal Issue feed similar to what is offered by Royal Holloway [http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/RSS2.htm#NewJournalIssues ], but through the Magic of an XML-based Black Box, update the holdings for an e-journal in the local staff and public OPAC. [Of course, The Devil Is In The Details Here, But Hey, RSS is XML, and So the Possibilities are Possible [:->]. I would most appreciate receiving Any and All Comments about MyNewWorldView (or Other Views that this Musings might inspire). Members are already probably aware that NewGenLib is the joint effort between the Kesavan Institute of Information and Knowledge Management (http://www.kiikm.org/). And a software company, Verus Solutions Pvt., Ltd., both in Hyderabad. Details of NewGenLib and its features can be seen at its web site, http://www.newgenlib.com/. The Goa Academic library networks union database OPAC is now accessible at http://goalnet.unigoa.ac.in/ and I welcome members of this list to access our OPAC. However, all the links are not yet functional. However link to the goalnet database is functional. I would like to highlight some of the useful features of the OPAC. ·Member libraries can locate their databases online through their dialup connectivity. ·The member library users can find their library online and do their transactions also online. ·The member libraries can only upload/download their transactions/data end of the day through a dial up connection. ·Users can access all the libraries collection by searching Union catalogue. ·Rest of the libraries in the country and outside the country can access the union catalogue of all the libraries in Goa. ·Lastly, member libraries need not prepare the database for the books already entered by any libraries in the network. They can copy-paste as facilitated by the software. We can even download the records from the Library of Congress without any problem and paste them to our database and add our accession number. INDEST-NCSI workshop on Institutional Repositories, 27-29 July 2004

Dear Members NCSI will be organizing the workshop "INDEST-NCSI workshop on Institutional Repositories" in IISc, Bangalore, during 27-29 July 2004. The workshop is aimed at setting up inter-operable e-print archives at core INDEST consortium member institutions http://paniit.iitd.ac.in/indest/) covering Indian Institutes of Technology (IIT's), Indian Institutes of Management (IIM's), and National Institutes of Technology (NIT's - earlier Regional Engineering Colleges), apart from IISc. These institutions together account for significant portion of research output from India. Institutional repositories should help us in improving the visibility and impact of research done in these institutions. This effort is an extension of the initial focus of the INDEST consortium to provide licensed/shared access to a large number of e-journals and databases. A variety of institutions (libraries, information and documentation centres, and other corporate bodies) have been digitizing documents of various kinds (text, manuscript, and image) on different media. The purpose includes development of databases and/or archival resources, to preserve, access, retrieve and disseminate information and documents. Digitization may also form the basis for creating products such as learning/teaching packages. A variety of software and techniques are being used. Some of the efforts have been successful while others have not been so. Nevertheless, many institutions are interested in digitization, and wish to learn from the experiences of those who have already undertaken digitization. An objective of this Seminar is to bring together for exchange of ideas those with experience in and those who have plans for, digitization. Papers are invited on practical experiences and case studies on the following aspects, but not exclusive of other aspects: 1.Use and evaluation of software and techniques for digitization (text, manuscript, image, sound, etc.) 2. Special aspects of digitization for archiving and preservation. 3.Classification, cataloguing and indexing methods, tools and techniques. Standards, meta-data, authority files, vocabulary control etc. 4. Searching, retrieval, and user-interfaces. 5. Copyright and other intellectual property issues. 6. Management, economics, and costs. 7. Handling non-Roman Scripts. Authors are requested to focus on practical experiences with digitization. The final paper should not exceed 5,000 (five thousand) words or 15 pages including figures, tables and annexes. An extended abstract of about 3-4 pages of the proposed paper should be submitted in advance. It will be refereed. Authors whose proposed papers are accepted will receive guidelines for preparing the final paper and its submission. Important dates : 25 June 2004: Last date for receipt of extended abstract by the Secretariat. 5 July 2004: Authors will be informed of the acceptance or otherwise of the paper. 25 July 2004: Last date for receipt of final paper by the Secretariat. 9-11 August 2004 : Seminar and SRELS Lectures. The National Alliance for Information and Communication Technologies for Basic Human Needs was launched at a meeting of more than 50 development experts at the M. S. Swaminathan Research Foundation (MSSRF) in Chennai last week. Comprising representatives of the Indian government, civil society organisations, academics and industry, it aims to take knowledge-based services to all of India's 600,000 villages by 2007, when the country celebrates its 60th year of independence. Those attending last week's meeting established seven task forces to look into the issues of connectivity, content, policy, capacity building, resources, organisation, and management and programme design, respectively, and to develop a common minimum action plan. "This is the first time that a national level task force on ICT led by civil societies has been formed," says Basheerhamad Shadrach, director of OneWorld South Asia and a joint secretary with the alliance. Government and industry led the previous two nationwide ICT initiatives in India, with limited participation from civil society. Several Indian initiatives on ICT already exist, some aimed for example at social empowerment, others being promoted by the commercial sector or offering viable models of revenue generation and sustainable livelihoods. A convergence and synergy among these could help reach the alliance's goal, according to information scientists from MSSRF who attended the meeting. Several argued that providing broadband connectivity to rural homes at affordable costs and integrating it with diverse technological applications could be the key to helping the poor benefit from ICT. The national alliance would help India leapfrog from a few thousand information kiosks to a knowledge-based rural economy, they say. They advocate converting information kiosks into multipurpose community centres. Such communication hubs could provide multiple telephone and communication services to the village, including a 'virtual academy' and training centre; support centre for rural entrepreneurship; and outlet for banking, financial and insurance services, and trading. In addition, they could serve as social empowerment organisations and support centres providing health, education and livelihoods information and services. The participants agreed to piggyback on existing government and private ICT infrastructure to create such community knowledge centres. To catalyse technology innovation for rural ICT, they recommended setting up a national resource centre for learning and experimenting innovations in rural ICTs. Those attending the meeting also urged a greater role for ICT in preparing for and managing disasters. Shadrach says the Indian government "should liberate the vast amount of spatial data" available through its remote sensing satellites for use by grassroots civil society organisations. 'Geospatial empowerment' is key to local resource planning, he argues. Stevan Harnad is simply unbeatable in his clartity of thinking and lucidity in exposition! I am surprised at the tremendous indifference prevailing in India. Only a handful of institutions either have set up or are setting up interoperable institutional open access archives in India. Scientists appear to be the least scientific when it comes to communicating and publicising their reserach findings. Steve Lawrence of NEC Research, Princeton, and a muli-institutional team comprising researchers fromSouthampton, Loughborough, Edinburgh and Quebec Universities have shown that papers available in the public domain are cited several times more often than papers available only in toll-access journals. And even toll access journals now permit authors to archive their papers in their own institutional archives. A few days ago, Ms Karen Hunter, Senior Vice President for Strategy at Elsevier, wrote to Stevan Harnad about the welcome change in Elsevier's policy which now allows authors to archive their papers in their institutional archives. And yet our scientists, laboratory directors, vice chancellors and heads of funding agencies have not proactively demanded, set up or supported setting up of institutional archives! On the brighter side, both the Indian Academy of Sciences and the Indian National Science Academy and CSIR are aware of the importance and benefits of Open Access and have supported a few workshops. INSA has also signed the Berlin Declaration. There are a few individuals - such as T B Rajashekar, A R D Prasad and D K Sahu and of late Sunil Abraham - who are willing to share their expertise with individuals and institutions keen to set up institutional archives/repositories. I wish their tribe increases. And more importantly, I wish librarians and scientists all over India set up archives at their institutions. Let us gain greater visibility for the research we perform. (6) With institutional archives the costs are distributed across the universities, and each university is a persistent entity. Just Imagine a person coming from North East or J&K taking all the pain to attend a interview in far places like South India or west India where the the result is already pre decided. I would like to share an recent experience of my friend who is working librarian in a Engg. College in North East. He went to attend an interview for the post Librarian in a National Level Sc & Tech. (Govt. of India) Institute where no TA/DA was paid to him. It took him 3 days to reach the interview place. The funniest part of the interview is that all the question that were asked to him were related to Achieves & Archival Management even when my friend clarified that he don't deal with the things & don't have the a fare idea about the subject related Archival Management . Still all the questions that were asked to him were related to Archival Management when that particular Instirute is not dealing with Archival Management . Later, he came to know that that the person from same Institute got the post. Then he came know why those Questions were asked. Is there any solution to that? Initially, the project built support by giving presentations, offering a conference on open access, and including key faculty members on an advisory board. When this did not result in the desired contribution levels, project staff focused on contacting faculty who had personal publication Web sites or who had published articles in either open access journals or journals that clearly permitted archiving. Many American universities, including MIT, encourage open access. Physicists world wide place their preprints and postprints in arXiv, the centralised archive for physics, astronomy, mathematical biology and related fields. We must quickly mobilise Indian universities to adopt open access. Prof. Nigavekar might wish to convene a meeting of vice chancellors especially to discuss issues of access to information generated world wide, dissemination of information generated in Indian universities and the advantages of open access. Spreading red colored paper (gift wrapper - porous and absorbant variety) on the shelf partitions will help. 2. Naphthalein balls, not very cheap though, would also help. 3. If wooden cup boards are used they may be painted red - the color you find in old printed books in paintings - vegetable based printing ink. 4. 'Gemmexine' dusting would also help. 5. If the atmosphere is highly humid (say, near sea side), Dishes containing Calcium Chloride (any desicant will do - even plain crytal salt) may be kept inside closed book cabinets. Such salt containers must be changed frequently with fresh salt. 6. Frequent de-dusting would help. 7. If the books (manuscripts) are rare, you need to seek professional help say from: National Research Laboratory for Conservation (NRLC) - Lucknow.
