Disruptive Scholarship

Disruptive Scholarship As defined by the Wikipedia, "[a] disruptive technology is a lower performance or less expensive product or process that gains a foothold in the low end, less demanding part of an existing market, and then successively moves up-market through performance improvements until finally displacing the market incumbents. Disruptive technologies are usually introduced to the market by small startup enterprises." The term Disruptive Technology was coined by Clayton M. Christensen and described in his 1997 book The Innovator's Dilemma. [MORE] [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Disruptive_technology ] In considering the nature of the Wiki [ http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wiki ] and the increasing range of applications [ http://www.public.iastate.edu/~CYBERSTACKS/WikiBib.htm ], I have begun to speculate further about the Wiki as *the* platform for The Next Generation e-Journal [ http://sunsite.berkeley.edu/Web4Lib/archive/0408/0173.html ] and the transformation of the review process. I hereby invite Any and All of my Web Colleagues to Critically Review the scenarios outlined below in which I sketch the probable future [:-)] of scholarly communication, review, and publishing ['Disruptive Scholarship'] in the WikiWorld. Regards, /Gerry Gerry McKiernan Disruptive Librarian Iowa State University Ames IA 50011 gerrymck(a)iastate.edu Presented for Your Consideration: In view of its collaborative features and functionalities, and the nature and character of alternative methods of quality management outlined, the wiki environment (McKiernan 2005) could provide an outstanding framework for preparing, editing, reviewing, assessing, and publishing for a range of scholarly work, including manuscripts, articles, journals, and monographs (Guest 2003). In one possible wiki-based publication scenario, authors would prepare a manuscript draft using locally-installed wiki engine software (or a free or commercial wiki service) that best suits their needs or preferences. In a first stage review, colleagues would be invited to participate in a review of the draft. At this stage, the author can choose to allow first-stage reviewers to edit the text, or limit participation to a discussion space. At a second stage, known specialists in the field(s) covered by the manuscript could be invited to review the revised first stage version. As in the first stage review, second stage reviewers would be granted open permission to edit the manuscript text, or be restricted to commenting on its content. At a third - and perhaps final stage - the author could request that others (such members of a professional electronic discussion list) review and edit and/or comment on the new, revised version. After final review, the revised final stage version could be locked from future discussion or editing. The locking of the final version could constitute formal publication of the work. Alternatively, the author/editor in chief at some later time could unlock the published version and invite any reader to discuss and/or edit it, thereby creating a 'living', dynamic, potentially ever-changing-and improving document by doing so. In this general scenario, there would be no editorial evaluation or judgment of the initial or subsequent versions of an original manuscript by an editor or editorial board; at each stage, the author would serve as both author and editor in chief, and ultimately as publisher of his/her work. The significance and value of the work would be based on a variety of metrics that could include a matrix of such measures as citation pattern, linking volume, and access statistics (McKiernan 2004). Dear Santosh, Let me first wish u all the best for ur endeavor. As it is u are working under one of the best guidance of Mr. G. K. Manjunath, Chief Librarian & Mr. S. M. Pujar, Assistant Librarian. I would like to suggest some points which I hope will be of help u in ur website development & give a professional touch to it: 1. The color coordination of all the pages should be consistent (inclusive of the Title, Tables, etc). The acknowledgement, contact & request page looks entirely diff. than the rest of the website. 2. In the contacts page u can add the links of the other portions of ur site (About Karnataka University, Social Science faculty, etc). 3. With regards to the Quotes (its a nice idea), but all the pages should be having one and better still if u can link with some website from where u can get the Quotes automatically updated, try out http://www.quotationspage.com/yourpage.html . 4. W.r.t copyright year u should put it in all the pages, better while making diff. pages for the site make a model page and keep just changing the content and the requisite links only (P.s.: this will save a lot of time and energy and will also give a consistent look to ur web pages). 5. There is a lot of space left vacant near the bottom of ur pages, just scrape the vacant space and try to cover the page in a way that will give it a more professional look. 6. Its a tendency of us information professionals to either go in for very subdued colors or very bright colors, (correct me if Iam wrong), but when a person visits a site he/she is basically attracted to the sites which have proper color coordination. Very subdued ones gives it a dull feel and very bright ones irritates the patron to the level that he/she cannot sustain to browse through the web pages for long because of the eye strain. Better go in for colors which give a pleasant feel as well as are sober and less strain to the eyes. 7. Regular updating of the website is the key aspect of making the efforts borne fruitful. I am submitting some of my suggestions over here if, any suggestions are there please update me too (for all my fellow professionals). In practice we have to deal with many types of digital documents such as text-based word-processed documents, e-mail messages, spreadsheets, presentations, scanned image documents, website (hypertext) documents, multimedia documents, digital audio and video, and dynamically interlinked documents. Increasing availability of various types documents currently tend to blur the boundaries between types of stored information, and increase the problems of capturing and retaining all elements of files. Digital information overload is the recent phenomena and people have been working to evolve suitable mechanism to address this issue. We do not currently have universal standard in digital information management however guidelines are available based on best practices. Dear Professionals, Google has launched its Beta version of Google Video - the new search facility to search the TV programs, online. Give any TV program name as a key word - we get the brief information about the show. The best part of it is, On the left hand side of the result page, we get links about the show, upcoming episodes of the show, and if we still want to know more abt the show, there is a Google hyperlink which gives the result. Since its still in its early stage not much videos are uploaded, yet. Google wants to offer cheap phone calls by broadband Richard Wray Guardian Google is the latest dotcom business looking to increase its revenues by offering broadband internet users the ability to make cheap phone calls over the web. The California-based internet search engine is doing some searching of its own, looking for a "strategic negotiator" to help the company deal with telecoms companies to put together "a global backbone network" which will help it increase the services it can provide. Google, which carries almost half of all internet search queries globally, is one of many companies looking to offer residential customers the chance to use their existing broadband internet connections to make cheap phone calls using technology called voice over internet protocol (VoIP). Internet service providers Wanadoo and AOL are already looking at using the technology to increase the revenues they make from their existing internet access customers. For Google, which was unavailable for comment yesterday, providing a telephony service would give the search engine its first chance to gain an insight into who uses its website. The information would improve the service it offers to its advertisers. Industry observers reckon that through VoIP Google would also be able to add new functions such as click to dial - where an advertiser's web-page has a special button that connects an internet phone straight to a call centre. At its most basic level, VoIP offers free calling. Services such as Skype and Gossiptel allow broadband users to download software on to their computers and call other broadband users with exactly the same software for free regardless of where they are. But problems arise when VoIP users wish to call or be called by people who are not using the same technology or who are on mobile phone networks. To connect a call across networks incurs an interconnect fee which shatters the ideal of free internet phone calls as the VoIP service provider finds itself having to pay for the privilege of being part of the international telephony market. VoIP specialist Vonage launched a broadband telephony service in the UK from ?9.99 offering unlimited calling to landline phones in the UK and Ireland. Plans have been prepared to facilitate the smooth transition on a global level and is necessitated by the dwindling of the numbers available to meet the growing demands of publishers and publications worldwide. The ISBN came into existence in 1970 as the internationally recognized identification system for the publishing and book sector. A unique identifier is attributed to each monographic publication from production and facilitates ordering and inventory by booksellers, libraries, publishers and the like as, in addition to enabling the collection of data it also contributes to the management of rights. Dear professionals, Vasu (as we in Mumbai know her) has so precisely pointed out areas for revamping in the education being imparted to LIS students. I wish to share with you my perceptions on a major area of learning in LIS, namely MARC. While we have a course work on it in library schools, how many of us have actually been inducted into the training of cataloging using MARC (school or after words). Not that it hinders our work, but with the divergent plethora of libraries we work in, I am sure a very basic training would have gone a long way. No wonder we have no Labs from LIS departments specifically on say Metadata or Digital Preservation (I may please be corrected). Sometime back, I heard this at a lecture and also from major players (ethical and knowledgable) of our field, that we in India, need to start building our libraries from the very basic, by educating people to "read". We are not a society where people read to gather information. People do not "use" libraries because they do not know what to read either. I feel we need to work towards : 1. Project work for school students, such that it includes the usage of libraries. We need people representing us, to make effective statements with major bodies like the UGC, NCERT, etc, etc. Same goes the case with our IT policy. 2. Our personal appearence makes the first impression on people, for we talk later. Likewise, how effective will a "Hi-Tech Library" be, with dusty, cramped, and dark shelves? We Indians support supperior technical jargon, nothing less. For eg., if we convey people that a conference on libraries is being organized, no body would probably even listen out, but, if we were to modify and say a conference on "information management and digitial libraries" is being organized, they would be more than awed. The way our national newspapers cover any course work, or conference with the above mentioned terminology is proof to that. Maybe, we need to cash on the trend since we are already at such sinking depths, for that is what works here ! 2. More International exposure of professionals in libraries of the schools, colleges, museums. We need activities for creating libraries and introducing reading programs, just like they are doing it in Africa. Working in correlation with major international associations, not only for conferences and conferring 'yet another' international award, but also, for training courses and workshops in India. We do not need technically loaded concepts for basics, but very fundamental skills to strive. It is not difficult to understand and implement new technology, until we learn to put forth our requirements to our respective managements, which can happen only when we prove our efficiency. 4. Somedays back, we saw a message posted about a new certificate course at UIUC available also via their LEEP program (distance education). We need our library schools to partner with major schools from all over the world, so that we can do something similar in our country. The list is long and as it comes to mind I might just keep jotting down, but I hope this is enough for a weekend (an early one this time :-)). I have seen people from most fields who choose to remain mediocres the rest of their lives. And I am talking to you about CAs, doctors, engineers, scientists who just do not excell, after all remember it is not our profession which runs (ruins) this country, but our bureaucrats and technocrats. Excellence in all fields are exceptions, but having a high morale about our profession and ourselves is not. And to market the course by - Proper ads in the papers - Talking to career counsellors to talk / write about the course - Any other innovative methods - even talking to Degree students about the course - Market it to other subject teachers - eg degree course teachers, so that they may recommend this course to students c) Interaction with the Industry. This should be done with an objective of having jobs ready for the first batch of students. The course and calibre of students should be marketed to the industry, by telling them that by employing people with such training, their organization would have xyz benefits. d) In terms of UGC and funding and implementing such changes, I think the best thing to do, is to have a group of us making a proper plan and asking for an appointment with the President of India. He loves children, he loves education and he loves libraries. If we get his blessings for this change, I think things can move. As I said, in the beginning, I am not a teacher of Lib. Sc. For those who do not know me, I am not a working librarian either (I was for about 7 years) I am an entrepreneur - and I feel very very strongly for the profession. I am willing to spend time and money on this entire "belling the cat" exercise. I am willing to take plenty of initiatives (what I already have done, is to employ three librarians, and am giving them salaries, working environment and teaching - to the best of my ability) This entire thing requires huge effort and commitment, and importantly sacrifices. The biggest sacrifice being giving up one's ego and not worrying about getting a name for this entire activity. Whoever heads this activity should not think that his/her name is important. Also, its potential is always understated. At the Satkal Annual Function 2004 held at the Government Museum and Art Gallery in collaboration with the British Library today, a discussion and lecture on library and information services in India turned out to be quite interesting. The post-Ranganathan (the name comes from the pioneer in library science) period is pretty dismal and no concrete steps are being taken in this field. With private/foreign libraries roping in most of the people as members, and a small country like Singapore coming up with the world’s best library set-up, there is still a lot to work on. The lecture: The former head of the Library & Information Services, British Council, P. Jayarajan, spoke on the ‘Glorious past, Stagnant Present, Uncertain Future’ of the library world. ‘‘The public library system is in a shambles. There is lack of resources, support, skill and consolidation. What we need is vision, a SWOT analysis to face the challenges of today,’’ he said. ‘‘To get the libraries out of the namesake category, we have to attract their users, especially non-users,’’ he added. Speaking of he emphasised the need for information professionals, upgrading skills, public relations and managerial know-how. Services, infrastructure, skills and partnership are the need of the hour, he said Awardees 2004: Each has made a vital contribution to the field of library science. Here’s a lowdown on their activities: Recipient of the Punjab National Librarian Award, Dr E. Rama Reddy: The University Librarian for Indira Gandhi Memorial Library, University of Hyderabad, Dr Reddy is an expert in managerial aspects of the subject and has been associated with the compilation of topical biographies. He has a vision: India as an informative society. Recipient of Young Librarian Award, M.G. Sreekumar: Librarian at the IIMK, his computerised brain and a digital vision has turned IIMK into a vibrant digital information system. He has conducted trainings on e-Publishing, digital libraries and medical informatics. He has also created an e-learning platform for doctors and the medical fraternity in India. Recipient of Woman Librarian Award, Veena Chawla: Library Director, American Resource Information Centre, Delhi, she has been awarded for outstanding performance, exhibiting a high level of professionalism and dedication, especially at the international level. Meanwhile, due to almost no response to the Ranganathan Quiz, two participants, Richa Gupta and Anil Siwach, were presented mementoes. The feedback: It is a pity that libraries in Indian universities are not getting the weight that is due to them: Prof G.S. Randhawa, former V-C of GNDU ‘‘Having a digitalised library won’t work in a country like India where there are frequent power shutdowns. hi I appreciate the anguih of Mrs Rangashri, i think she hould not get excited about the lapses from the associations and professionals. after all many things matter, such as environment, training, traditions--what not.
