Microsoft kills Explorer for the Mac

Dear all, Microsoft has killed Internet Explorer on the Mac. The software giant will end support for it at the end of the year (i.e.in 13 days) and will make no additional security or performance updates available from that point. From 31 January coming up, Internet Explorer for the Mac will no longer be available for download from Microsoft. A statement from the company read: "On June 2003, the Microsoft Macintosh Business Unit announced that Internet Explorer for Mac would undergo no further development, and support would cease in 2005." It seems Microsoft is sticking to that. It suggests instead that Mac users may want to migrate to "more recent Web browsing technologies", such as Safari. INSAT-4A to be launched on Dec 22

Dear Library and Info Sc. Professionals, Bangalore, Dec 19: Preparations are in the final stages for the launch of INSAT-4A, India's heaviest satellite, from Kourou, French Guyana, on December 22. The 3,080 kg INSAT-4A, the first satellite to be launched in the INSAT-4 series, carries 12 high-power Ku-band transponders to meet the requirement of Direct-to-Home (DTH) television services, apart from 12 C-band transponders to augment the INSAT capacity for communication and DTH services. The Master Control Facility (MCF) at Hassan is in readiness to take control of INSAT-4A soon after Ariane-5 places it in the Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit (GTO), the Indian Space Research Organisation said in a release. In the following days after launch, MCF will conduct operations like orbit raising manoeuvres to take the satellite into the final 36,000 km circular Geosynchronous Orbit, the release said. MCF will also carry out regular operations and control of the satellite during its service life. I can explain the authentication system which is available for accessing the electronic journals with out IP-barriers from home. All the academic and research organizations in UK have a access of this authentication system by using login and password for individual users provided by ATHENS service, which is a product of Eduserv, Bath (UK). This system is free for them as it is funded by the JISC, UK for their education and research organizations. ATHENS system covers almost all electronic journals published by Europe and US e-publishers. I have my own experience of using this ATHENS system while pursuing my fellowship at Middlesex University, London. I have also come to know that in India, there are two British Libraries (from Delhi and from Mumbai, if I am not wrong) is using this system as it is free for them. Other than the UK organisation, has to subscribe this service if they want for there users. I know many US universities and Research organizations are using this servuce. LBSIM DELHI announces National Conference on Communication for Management, Teaching & Research in Indian Business Schools March 7 - 8, 2006 at LBSIM, Delhi RATIONALE In the context of global and multicultural business environment, communication problems of professionals assume great importance. Therefore, in a management school, developing abilities of effective communication in students is a major concern. 'Communication', thus, is a very important module. It prepares the students to excel in whatever they do by teaching them to express and advocate ideas effectively, and to understand and appreciate the diversity of human communication practices. The 'course inputs' help students develop and refine their 'communication' skills in various spheres, including communication in inter-personal, inter-group and inter-organizational relationships. The critical question, therefore, is how do we go about developing and delivering course inputs, which would be of significance and of value addition in respect of their current and future professional career. At broader levels, the students must also study communication climates and cultures, emergent networks, information environments, organizational symbols, information technologies, and cross-cultural communication in corporate settings. They must also understand the impact of messages transmitted by various mass media, role of communication in the functioning of complex organizations. The courses must also address issues such as target group analysis, internal/external communication integration, systems analysis and channel effectiveness. Again, the question is how do we go about incorporating such inputs in the course curriculum and delivering the same. Use of 'technology' in 'communication' is another area that needs to be comprehensively understood and investigated. Communication with new technologies is of great importance to students as they enter organizations in various capacities. This would include an understanding of the technologies and the effects of technology usage, theories of media choice and usage, implementation and adoption of communication technology in organizations. A special mention must be made here of the specific communication technologies (including Internet and intranets, WWW, email, computer conferencing, videoconferencing, electronic meeting systems, voice mail, pagers, fax, speech recognition, etc.) used in organizations. Of late, business schools (of excellence) have taken this issue very seriously and are offering courses in the area of 'communication' with an aim to equip the budding professionals with all those 'receptive' as well as 'expressive' communication skills that are needed by them the most to be successful in today's' highly competitive envirnment. However, a survey undertaken by IIM Lucknow to seek industry/alumni input/feedback for restructuring its course curriculum, revealed that the course/s taught in the area of Communication needed to be reworked upon, particularly in terms of content delivered, pedagogy followed and the assessment and evaluation techniques used. Similar revelations came up, in more concrete terms, in AMDISA Workshop (June, 2000) on 'Reinventing Management Education' as well as in IIM Ahmedabad 'National Seminar on Teaching Business Communication at Indian Business Schools' (March 2001). In line with the above scenario, the basic thrust of the conference would be to examine how this discipline is handled in leading business schools in the country. Soliciting enriching experiences from distinguished academics for discussion in the peer group, and publishing the findings will be an enriching contribution to the discipline. OBJECTIVES * To provide an opportunity to the academics to share their knowledge and experiences in teaching course/s on 'Communication for Management' in their respective schools; * To identify and bridge gaps in terms of the course content, pedagogy, evaluation mechanism, feedback etc; and * To get a first hand feel of Indian research initiatives in this upcoming area. COVERAGE The proposed two-day conference will provide an opportunity for deliberations among academics, professionals and practitioners on following issues : * Communication in the 'knowledge-economy'. * Course/s Content, Pedagogy, Feedback, Assessment, Evaluation. * Research initiatives in the area. * Industry response/feedback on 'teaching' as well as 'research' in the area. * Gaps, if any, vis-à-vis benchmark initiatives/practices. Tips to recover scratched CDs Don't you feel like crying every time you add another disc to your pile of scratched discs. Trashing that disc which contained your favorite songs, pics, files, games or videos is not easy. Read-on, if you find yourself wishing for a miracle every time your fav CD is scratched: Home Remedy : here's an easy home remedy, which might give you the desired results. Rub a small amount of toothpaste on the scratch and polish the CD with a soft cloth and any petroleum-based polishing solution (like clear shoe polish). Squirt a drop of Brasso and wipe it with a clean cloth. Technology to the rescue There are many softwares available on the net, which enable the recovery of the CD data. BadCopy Pro is one such software, which can be used to recover destroyed data and files from a range of media. Just a few clicks is all it requires to recover the disc from almost all kind of damage situation; be it corrupted, lost data, unreadable or defective. DiskDoctors is another popular company, which offers both software and solutions to recover data from a scratched CDs and DVDs. General Tips: * Always wipe the CD from the center outward with stratight spoke-like strokes. Wiping CDs in circles will create more scratches. * Do not scratch the graphics layer as you cannot repair the disc. HINT: Hold the disc up to a light with the graphics layer facing the light source. If you can see light thru the scratches at any point then the disc may be irreparable and or exhibit loading or playing errors. * Clean your Disc players lens regularly with a suitable product to ensure optimal viewing pleasure. * Make sure to use a soft, lint-free cloth to clean both sides of the disc. Wipe in a straight line from the centre of the disc to the outer edge. * If wiping with a cloth does not remove a fingerprint or smudge, use a specialized DVD disc polishing spray to clean the disc. * Only handle the disc by its outer edge and the empty hole in the middle. Gingras, Ten-Year Cross-Disciplinary Comparison of the Growth of Open Access and How it Increases Research Citation Impact, IEEE Data Engineering Bulletin, 2005. Self-archived December 16, 2005. Abstract: In 2001, Lawrence found that articles in computer science that were openly accessible (OA) on the Web were cited substantially more than those that were not. We have since replicated this effect in physics. To further test its cross-disciplinary generality, we used 1,307,038 articles published across 12 years (1992-2003) in 10 disciplines (Biology, Psychology, Sociology, Health, Political Science, Economics, Education, Law, Business, Management). We designed a robot that trawls the Web for full-texts using reference metadata (author, title, journal, etc.) and citation data from the Institute for Scientific Information (ISI) database. A preliminary signal-detection analysis of the robot's accuracy yielded a signal detectability d'=2.45 and bias = 0.52. The overall percentage of OA (relative to total OA + NOA) articles varies from 5%-16% (depending on discipline, year and country) and is slowly climbing annually (correlation r=.76, sample size N=12, probability p < 0.005). Comparing OA and NOA articles in the same journal/year, OA articles have consistently more citations, the advantage varying from 25%-250% by discipline and year. Comparing articles within six citation ranges (0, 1, 2-3, 4-7, 8-15, 16+ citations), the annual percentage of OA articles is growing significantly faster than NOA within every citation range (r > .90, N=12, p < .0005) and the effect is greater with the more highly cited articles (r = .98, N=6, p < .005). Causality cannot be determined from these data, but our prior finding of a similar pattern in physics, where percent OA is much higher (and even approaches 100% in some subfields), makes it unlikely that the OA citation advantage is merely or mostly a self-selection bias (for making only one's better articles OA). Further research will analyze the effect's timing, causal components and relation to other variables, such as, download counts, journal citation averages, article quality, co-citation measures, hub/authority ranks, growth rate, longevity, and other new impact measures generated by the growing OA database.

In June of 2005, we collected over 3,300 responses from information consumers in Australia, Canada, India, Singapore, the United Kingdom and the United States. Study: Wikipedia as accurate as Britannica Daniel Terdiman, December 16, 2005 The journal Nature says the open-access encyclopedia is about as accurate as the old standby. Over the last couple of weeks, Wikipedia, the free, open-access encyclopedia, has taken a great deal of flak in the press for problems related to the credibility of its authors and its general accountability. In particular, Wikipedia has taken hits for its inclusion, for four months, of an anonymously written article linking former journalist John Seigenthaler to the assassinations of Robert Kennedy and John F. Kennedy. At the same time, the blogosphere was buzzing for several days about podcasting pioneer Adam Curry's being accused of anonymously deleting references to others' seminal work on the technology. In response to situations like these and others in its history, Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales has always maintained that the service and its community are built around a self-policing and self-cleaning nature that is supposed to ensure its articles are accurate. Still, many critics have tried to downplay its role as a source of valid information and have often pointed to the Encyclopedia Britannica as an example of an accurate reference. For its study, Nature chose articles from both sites in a wide range of topics and sent them to what it called "relevant" field experts for peer review. The experts then compared the competing articles--one from each site on a given topic--side by side, but were not told which article came from which site. Nature got back 42 usable reviews from its field of experts. In the end, the journal found just eight serious errors, such as general misunderstandings of vital concepts, in the articles. Of those, four came from each site. They did, however, discover a series of factual errors, omissions or misleading statements. All told, Wikipedia had 162 such problems, while Britannica had 123. That averages out to 2.92 mistakes per article for Britannica and 3.86 for Wikipedia. "An expert-led investigation carried out by Nature--the first to use peer review to compare Wikipedia and Britannica's coverage of science," the journal wrote, "suggests that such high-profile examples (like the Seigenthaler and Curry situations) are the exception rather than the rule." And to Wales, while Britannica came out looking a little bit more accurate than Wikipedia, the Nature study was validation of his service's fundamental structure. "I was very pleased, just to see that (the study) was reasonably favorable," Wales told CNET News.com. "I think it provides, for us, a great counterpoint to the press coverage we've gotten recently, because it puts the focus on the broader quality and not just one article." He also acknowledged that the error rate for each encyclopedia was not insignificant, and added that he thinks such numbers demonstrate that broad review of encyclopedia articles is needed. He also said that the results belie the notion that Britannica is infallible. "I have very great respect for Britannica," Wales said. But "I think there is a general view among a lot of people that it has no errors, like, 'I read it in Britannica, it must be true.' This heralds a new era in both the evolution of scholarly communication and its agencies themselves, i.e. the libraries. Until now libraries and publishers have developed a digital variant of existing processes and products,i.e. catalogues posted on the Web, scanned copies of articles, e-mail notification about acquisitions or expired lending periods, or traditional journals in a digital jacket. However, the new OAI repositories and services based upon them have given rise to entirely new processes and products, libraries transforming themselves into partners in setting up virtual learning environments, building an institution's digital showcase, maintaining academics' personal Web sites, designing refereed portals and - further into the future - taking part in organising virtual research environments or collaboratories. Libraries are set to metamorphose into 'libratories', an imaginary word to express their combined functions of library, repository and collaboratory. In such environments scholarly communication will be liberated from its current copyright bridle while its coverage will be both broader - including primary data, audiovisuals and dynamic models - and deeper, with cross-disciplinary analyses of methodologies and applications of instruments. Universities will make it compulsory to store in their institutional repositories the results of research conducted within their walls for purposes of academic reporting, review committees, and other modes of clarification and explanation. Big search engines will provide access to this profusion of information and organise its mass customization.

Thank you Sukhdev for expressing your views openly so everyone will have an opportunity to reflect. 1.India has such a great reputation - as one of the world's best in software, for example - and many of our LIS professionals attend and speak at conferences on digital libraries and other adanced topics. Many Indian LIS professionals have spent several months in good US institutions as Fulbright scholars and a few have spent time in the UK (as exchange visitors). Many LIS departments do teach computer programming and use of technology in libraries as part of their curriculum. One would therefore expect that there should be no "fear of working with Linux," at least in leading research institutions and the better higher educational institutions. Assuming that some LIS professionals are not familiar with Linux, how long would it take to learn? 2. There is no harm in examining different software before one chooses one of them. For example, at NIC Sukhdev and colleagues took time before they decided to go ahead with GNU EPrints. Mr Muthu Madhan at NIT Rourkela took time to examine both DSPace and EPrints before he decided to work with DSPace. Indeed taking time to examine different software before a repository is set up, in my opinion, is a good thing. It gives one hands-on experience and strengthens one's involvement in OA. 3. Yes, the passing away of Raja is a great loss. But his legacy, viz. the IISc GNU EPrints archive, should inspire the rest of the community to set up similar archives in other institutions. Right now we have competent people such as Dr A R D Prasad, Dr D K Sahu and Sukhdev imself. When I wanted OneWorld South Asia to set up an archive for ICT-enabled Development (somewhat similar to penMED for biomedical research), I took the OWSA team to Sukhdev without prior appointment and he was kind enouugh to spare two hours (and he even offered to provide us lunch). My point is we have lost one of our best men, but mercifully we have others who are more than willing to help anyone who wants to set up an archive. 4. I have not heard of any computer science department coming forward to set up an institutional archive. By and large is going to be the LIS personnel who will have to set up and maintain institutional archives. At least in India, that is how it will happen. 5. When we held two workshops at MSSRF more than 18 months ago, virtually everyone of the participants told Leslie Chan that he/she would be able to set up an archive within a few months (ranging from 3-9 months). But only a few have actually set up till now. As the coordinator of the workshop, I wrote to virtually everyone of the participants more than once. I am not even sure how many of them spoke to their managements (Vice chancellor, Director, Registrar, Head of Dept, Dean, etc.). Things may improve only if there is an order from above! If heads of institutions/ funding agencies could mandate making publicly funded research available through open access, then people will start action. The recent versions of both DSpace and EPrints are pretty easy to install. Costs are not a major problem, but cannot be ignored altogether. Advocacy at all levels - at the levels of research students, faculty, heads of institutions, policy makers, donor agencies - should continue. And of course some introspection - just started by Sukhdev, for which he deserves our thanks. Let us hope Dr Alma Swan [who will speak at the Science Congress on 6th January and also visit Bangalore, Bombay and Delhi to meet with people and promote Open Access] will inspire a number of people to start new OA archives. Dear Friends, Thank you all very much in responding to email on the above subject. Ihad made certain assumptions that could be true in the year 2020.Under such circumstances, what could be the Shape of Academic andResearch Libraries? I did not touch upon the Public and NationalLibraries, as their functions are more of serving the citizens and ofarchival of national heritage. Some of you [1][2] have valid reasons to question such assumptionsespecially when it comes to India. Infrastructure like Electricity andReliable Internet connectivity could be major hurdles. You won'tbelieve that even in Delhi, the capital of India, there are regularpower cuts. Even in day of Govt. Control of power distribution thesituation was much better. Only problem was billing and their payment.With private companies, billing and payments is no problem, can behandled conveniently over Internet. But the power cuts are a routineand unscheduled. So lesson learned is that Privatization withoutcompetition is worse. But friends, hold a bit, lack of infrastructure won't affect thecoming shape of libraries in India. The Reason? Our Research andTeaching depends largely depends on what is published outside India.Even good Indian content is published outside India. So we have nochoice if much of it is available in electronic format in future. Iagree with some of you [2][5] that paper is more convenient mode ofreading. But then efforts to develop display gadgets that will givethe comfort of paper are on way and by 2020 could be a reality. So, Ithink, whether we are ready or not – content may only available inelectronic form [3][6] from developed countries. Economics ofpublishing may not favor print formats. The publishers will bedistributing the content, as done now, in various business models –Free, Fee Based, Pay-per-view etc. Only thing would be that confusionsaround copyrights etc would be cleared and taken care of by the year2020. Friends, training of the end-users will also be not a major problemthen. The future users are the now primary school children. You willappreciate how both their teachers and parents keen to teach themcomputers. Infact, if a middle class Indian family is buying a homecomputer today, it is for their children. I hope this generation ofusers may be well ahead of present day users. I am not painting a gloomy picture for future of Librarianship. I amonly assuming a "worst – case scenario". I know, I was told in mymatriculation math class, how to solve problem and find unknownquantity – 'Let the quantity be "X" !!!' and so on. New service aims to help developing world in research Stefanie Olsen December 14, 2005 Scientists in developing countries may soon have better access to peer research on the Internet, thanks to a partnership between search specialists at Massachusetts Institute of Technology and Elsevier. MIT's Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory is contributing technology to a joint project with Elsevier that will allow scientists with limited bandwidth to access information online more easily, the school announced on Tuesday. MIT's technology, called TEK, lets researchers with limited resources, such as outdated technology or weak funds, send a query to its servers and search engine. TEK will collect documents, compress them and send them back via email a week later, saving the recipient on connectivity costs. Combined with Elsevier's science search engine, dubbed Scirus, TEK will hone in on the science-related subset of the Web for researchers, according to the two partners. Called Search Scirus with TEK, the service "can help bridge the information divide between technologically advanced and developing countries, serving the global scientific community at large", Sharon Mombru, Scirus' senior product manager, said in a statement. The move comes as many projects are under way to bring more scientific information to the Web and mitigate the costs of otherwise pricey information. Google, for example, is adding many different sources of scientific data to its specialised search engine, Google Scholar. Still, the project doesn't directly address the slow connection speeds that bandwidth-challenged researchers face. MIT and Elsevier plan to bring the project to institutions with specific expertise in information-delivery to developing countries. "We hope that organisations with access to users in these countries will take Elsevier's lead and get involved... to help put this initiative into practice and extend the reach of valuable scientific information available on the Internet," said Saman Amarasinghe, associate professor of electrical engineering and computer science at MIT. Why is open access important for higher education?

Excerpt: Why is open access important for higher education? Open access is one strategy - and actually the most successful strategy so far - for addressing dysfunctions in the system of scholarly communication. That system is in serious trouble. High rates of price increase for scholarly journals (particularly in scientific fields), stagnant library budgets, journal cancellations, declining library monograph acquisitions, university presses in serious economic trouble, and increasing corporate control of journal publishing by a small number of international conglomerates that have grown in size through repeated mergers and acquisitions - those are all symptoms of the problem. Scholars have lost control of a system that was meant to serve their needs; more importantly, they are also losing access to research. Open access has extraordinary potential for overcoming the fundamental problem of access to scholarship. It is a means of reasserting control by the academy over the scholarship that it produces and of making that scholarship openly available to everyone - at anytime and from virtually any place on the globe. Why does open access matter to liberal arts colleges in particular? It is especially important for liberal arts colleges because of the access issue. Liberal arts college libraries have smaller budgets, compared to the research universities. While even the major research libraries cannot afford all of the journals that they need, the lack of access is an even bigger problem in the liberal arts college realm. Faculty at many liberal arts colleges are expected to be active researchers and independent study is also a hallmark of a liberal arts college undergraduate education. So the lack of access to journal literature can be even more problematic in the liberal arts college framework than it is for the research universities.... What's the hottest current issue related to open access? I think it's the issue of taxpayer-funded research. Both in this country and abroad there is increasing interest in making publicly-funded scientific research openly accessible. We saw the beginnings of that with the National Institute of Health policy that was instituted last year and I think we will soon see a broad national debate about the advisability of this for all U.S. government agencies. The United Kingdom is moving toward a comprehensive policy of mandating open access to all government-funded research. What is your role in the open access movement? I have been a member of the steering committee of SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) since its inception. SPARC, which is a coalition of academic and research libraries, has been a prominent advocate for open access. I have also played a leading role in the scholarly communications program of the Association of College & Research Libraries. I chaired a task force that recommended the ACRL scholarly communications initiative and I have been chair of the ACRL Scholarly Communications Committee since it was established. Faculty at many liberal arts colleges are expected to be active researchers and independent study is also a hallmark of a liberal arts college undergraduate education. So the lack of access to journal literature can be even more problematic in the liberal arts college framework than it is for the research universities.... Whats the hottest current issue related to open access? I think its the issue of taxpayer-funded research. Both in this country and abroad there is increasing interest in making publicly-funded scientific research openly accessible. We saw the beginnings of that with the National Institute of Health policy that was instituted last year and I think we will soon see a broad national debate about the advisability of this for all U.S. government agencies. The United Kingdom is moving toward a comprehensive policy of mandating open access to all government-funded research. What is your role in the open access movement? I have been a member of the steering committee of http://www.arl.org/sparc SPARC (the Scholarly Publishing and Academic Resources Coalition) since its inception. SPARC, which is a coalition of academic and research libraries, has been a prominent advocate for open access. I have also played a leading role in the scholarly communications program of the Association of College & Research Libraries. I chaired a task force that recommended the ACRL scholarly communications initiative and I have been chair of the ACRL Scholarly Communications Committee since it was established. Being involved with both SPARC and ACRL has put me in the middle of a number of these issues for the past several years.

Excerpt: The Semantic Web is getting a boost in the life sciences arena. The Semantic Web involves a concept in which data from multiple sources and ontologies can be integrated into a single information space. Experiment design automation (XDA) software vendor Teranode, which focuses on software for life sciences, plans to collaborate with Science Commons to build a neurology repository for the Semantic Web. Called Neurocommons.org, the project will provide a free repository of neurology-related data, tools and pathway knowledge for use by public and private researchers. Science Commons is an effort launched to promote the free flow of scientific information....Science Commons will use the Teranode XDA infrastructure for Neurocommons.org. All content will be available in the Resource Description Framework (RDF) format, allowing for participating foundations to use a shared repository of research.

OA to publicly-funded journals coming in China Jia Hepeng, China launches campaign to boost local journals, SciDev.Net, December 7, 2005. Excerpt: The Chinese government has launched a campaign to encourage Chinese researchers to publish their results in domestic rather than international journals, and to place their results in free archives. "We will gradually make scientists publish research that is funded by the government agencies in leading domestic journals," said Wu Bo'er, director of the Department of Facilities and Financial Support of the Ministry of Science and Technology, at a meeting last week (30 November). At the heart of the campaign is a new fund that will provide financial support to between 300 and 500 of the country's 5,000 scientific journals. The money, whose total amount has yet to be announced, is intended to help the journals improve their editorial and print quality. Some journals will be encouraged to publish in English....At present, papers published by Chinese researchers in journals quoted in the Science Citation Index can bring substantial rewards, such as professorships, research grants and even housing. This has encouraged Chinese scientists to publish their results in foreign journals. To reverse the trend, Wu told SciDev.Net that Chinese scientists may eventually be required to publish their work domestically....Yu Zailin of Peking University disagrees with a ban on publishing in international journals, saying it would impede academic progress. He suggests that instead, Chinese scientists could be asked to write a Chinese paper to be published simultaneously or shortly after their foreign publication....Wang Li, chief editor of Changchun-based Journal of Jilin University, raises another concern. While he accepts that the government's campaign may help to strengthen the country's leading journals, he warns that it could have a less beneficial impact on other scientific publications. "If all Chinese researchers are encouraged to submit their papers to the leading journals, the middle and small-level domestic ones could suffer," says Wang....The government will also fund an online database of the full text of all papers published in journals selected to receive financial support. Both researchers and the public will have access to the database. Comment. I applaud the Chinese plan to improve many of its journals and provide OA to publicly-funded research and publicly-funded journals. However, I also support the concerns of Yu Zailin. One solution is to let researchers publish in the journals of their choice but expect them to deposit copies of their work in OA repositories. This is the approach taken by the NIH, Wellcome Trust, and RCUK. Researchers will still have an incentive to publish in the improved Chinese journals because of their new quality and new access policies.

ends I am happy to announce the Beta testing of version 2.0 of NewGenLib. Both the librarian's Applet interface and the OPAC are under test and I welcome the comments and suggestions from professionals. I have provided two URLs which can be used in order to explore the version 2.0 OPAC. New features in The Applet Interface It will now be possible to import authority file records from the Library of Congress Authorities site. Authority records thus imported will become part of the local authority file and during cataloguing data entry the authority records can be seen. It is hoped that this will improve consistency and accuracy of catalogue records. Version 2.0 will allow a library to build an open archive of an Institution's pre-prints, post-prints, internal reports, slides, etc. This feature has become possible because version 2.0 supports the OAI-PMH protocol. Resources which are to be open-archived are identified specifically in the interface and only these records will be able to be harvested by others. The new version has also built functionality to connect to existing open archives compliant with OAI-PMH. The librarian can then selectively harvest records from the site. All such records then become an integral part of the local database and hence become searchable apart from the fact that they will point to the digital content attached to the harvested metadata record. Based on requests that we received from existing customers we have added a Simple template for cataloguing data entry. This template has the most widely used fields and will be adequate for most monograph records. Records created with this template will still be stored as MARC-21 records. For more complete cataloguing one would still need to use the General and/or MARC-21 templates. It will now be possible for a library to configure to receive news feeds from one or more Remote Site Summary (RSS) feeds. The news feeds can be viewed from the OPAC. The new version will allow a degree of customization of patron records. New features in the OPAC Two new search options have been provided: A Google-like search option using the Lucene search engine. names, single terms, or phrases can be entered in this and all fields of the metadata database are searched; and An Expert search interface that will allow a librarian/information specialist to enter complex search queries using the most important features of the Common Query Language (CQL). The possibility to choose between tabular and citation displays in the search output. The possibility to sort search output by different keys. The possibility for the search output to be exported (in addition to text and MARC-21 and MARC-XML) to the more recent MODS metadata standard and also to the AGRIS-Application Profile format in XML.
