why cant we change Mlisc degree to MSc degree

Dear lis-forum members, Really i felt very sad when people(some) asked me what is Mlisc. So every time i had to explain what is Mlisc and what we study in this degree. what i feel is better we change this Mlisc degree to MSc degree, and there wont be any confusion for non-library background people. Mlisc has been included under science stream in allmost all universities and some universities are giving degrees under MSc for example kuvempu university in karnataka. And one important thing i noticed is there is discrimination between Library science and some arts subjects . For example people study Geography under Arts stream in degree, but in PG it is included under science stream and degrees are awarded with MSc., even this holds good for Psychology also, they also study Psychology under Arts in degree and under science stream in PG. why this discrimination only for library science. So i request all Library science faculty to pressure higher authorities,VCs to change MLisc to Msc., I hope all lis-forum members will support my move and unite together for a good cause. Dear All, National Centre for Radio Astrophysics Pune is pleased to annouce a workshop on " Creating digital libraries using DSpace Open Source Software" Dates: 24th-26th July 2006 Venue: NCRA, Pune Organised by : National Centre for Radio Astrophysics (NCRA) Many organizations are now trying to set up open access digital repositories using open source software. There are couple of open source software available for developing digital libraries and DSpace (http://www.dspace.org/ ) is one of the most popular software developed jointly by MIT Libraries and HP labs. DSpace helps to create, index and retrieve various forms of digital content. The purpose of this workshop is to provide training to library professionals by providing adequate practical knowledge which will enable them to initiate digital library projects on their own by using open source software. The focus will be given on DSpace open source digital library software which is freely available on internet and can be customized according to the requirements. It will be a unique opportunity for library professionals to get exposure to the concept of open source software in which changes can be easily made since source code is available with the user, which is not the case with proprietary software. DSPACE: DSpace can be used to build institutional or discipline-based repositories Submission facility allows scientists and researchers to upload digital documents from anywhere in the world Workflow feature allows moderation/review of the submitted documents Assigns persistent identifiers to each digital object in the repository Conforms to the standards like Dublin Core and OAI-PMH v.2.0 Security can be built at various levels to effect restricted access Asian and other world language based digital libraries can be built as it conforms to the UNICODE standard DSpace is an open source software and is freely downloadable from http://www.dspace.org/ This workshop is exclusively designed to provide hands-on-experience to the Librarians and Information Officers in developing a digital library using DSpace software. Hello Mr.Bandi, I agree with your points Mr Bandi and it is already implemented also. I saw an advertisement for the teaching and non teaching posts for tamil nadu open university modified notification i.e 1 .In view of the contmplated changes in the eligibility qualification for the post of Lecturers in the univerisity by way of exemption to M.Phil and Ph.D qualified candidates fron passing NET/SLET examination, all applicanbts with M.Phil/Ph.D alone are eligible to apply for the leecture post in the disciplines advertised, subject to the receipt of UGC communication to that effect before the date of Interview.However, all those possessin only Master's qualification should habve passed NET/SLET examinations 2. consequently, the last date for submission of filled-in application is extended to 15th june 2006 Dr. S.Manickam Registrar .in todays The Hindu Bangalore edition.If require i will send to you tomorrow after scanning. But, i dont know what criteria is UGC following for recruitment . According to me let the first priority given to UGC/NET qualified and if candidates are not available they for Ph.D and then M.Phil.candidates. If one is influncial, favoured, financial sound background. If it is not followed then lot of injustice may happen to those who have qualifed above exams. I think there is no use of commenting and quoting now about this matter after implementing all everything.If any chances are there let me know. Downloads will be available at the fair's web site from July 4, the 35th anniversary of Project Gutenberg's founding, through Aug. 4. The majority of the books will be contributed by the World eBook Library. It otherwise charges $US8.95 ($A12.02) a year for access to its database of more than 250,000 e-books, documents and articles. But the book fair will not be the last chance for e-bookworms to devour works ranging from "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" to "Old Indian Legends," not to mention dictionaries and thesauruses, without paying for them. Project Gutenberg founder Michael Hart, who first announced the ambitious plan a month ago, said Friday the partners are on track to make 1 million books available for the annual fair's one-month run in 2009, with more appearing in subsequent years. LISDWD(a)yahoogroups.co.in, lis-forum(a)ncsi.iisc.ernet.in Dear professionals, I read many responses and comments regarding the scraping up of NET/SET decided by UGC, before to this decision I red one article in CURRENT SCIENCE Journal illuminated about the affect of the NET/SET compulsion on University out put i.e. Research. See UGC decision has taken by considering many more subjects and aspects. A proper guideline regarding the selection for the Lectureship is not yet formally decided by UGC. It is too early to draw a conclusion whether this decision is a correct or not. Now we see about the QUALITY, many people have raised a question about the NET/SET candidates have better QUALITY than non NET/SET candidates. I feel UGC Exam gives QUALIFICATION not QUALITY. As we are thinking only about the LIS whether there was no QUALITY before 1992 when there was no NET/SET compulsion for teaching. Most of we have studied under non NET/SET teachers then have you questioned about their QUALITY? In total I want to say that NET/SET is not only for the QUALITY but also to promote the research work, which is not happening. One more thing I wanted to tell you that not even one Indian University is ranked in first 500 universities at International level, why it is so? In subjects like Egg. can survive and do better without GATE then is it not possible in other subjects. Have you all observed the NET/SET clearing candidates are fresher students who have little practical knowledge? Hence I suggest UGC can conduct these qualifying exams categorically. Category may be on the basis of experience; Without experience 1 to 3 years experience 3 to 5 years experience 5 to 7 years experience 7 to 10 years experience 10 to 15 years experience 15 to 20 years experience In this type you can consider many other aspects to test the candidates subject knowledge. Because fresher may get more time to prepare and may not be having work pressers and so many other things which are in fever to them. Now the answers expecting in the exam are of text book oriented and you cannot expect a 5 to 10 and more years experience persons answers will compete the fresh candidates answers as far as the text book knowledge is concerned. Dear friend, We have around 42,000 plus books and we follow the following steps which seems to be quite efficient. Most of the collection is bar coded. We make 3 groups of 3 persons each. To speed up the process each group starts scanning the barcodes at the same time. We have 3 laser scanners. The acc. No. of books without the bar codes are entered manually into the system. You can use the extension wires to take the systems and scanners near the shelf itself to save time. All the entries from all three systems are compiled in a single system for the physical presence of the books in the library and submitted to your library management software (if you have that) stock verification module for updating in your system. Report submitted to the management or authorities concerned. You can hire or borrow more scanners if you want to speed up and have more groups. The top gun with memory which is available for stock checking costs around Rs.30,000, but only one person can work at a given time ( that is if you have only one gadget). This takes more time. I learn from Prof. Arunachalam's email that National Institute of Technology (NIT), Rourkela adopted an OA mandate. The policy adopted by NIT as summarised in ROARMAP is - "All research papers by faculty and students, MTech (Research) and Ph. D. thesis is to be self-archived in Dspace@nitr or it should be submitted to the librarian for archiving, so that others interested may benefit by referring to these documents. The Administration may use this archive for assessment of faculty performance when needed." All credit should go to the Librarian ( I don't know who -- sorry!! ). Others should fellow the example. >From Peter Suber's blog "Open Access News" New OA database on small molecules ChemBank is a new OA database from the Broad Institute's Chemical Biology Program (at Harvard University) and funded by the U.S. National Cancer Institute's Initiative for Chemical Genetics (ICG). (Thanks to ResourceShelf.) From the site: This knowledge environment includes freely available data derived from small molecules and small-molecule screens, and resources for studying the data so that biological and medical insights can be gained.... Currently, ChemBank stores information on hundreds of thousands of small molecules and hundreds of biomedically relevant assays that have been performed at the ICG in collaborations involving biomedical researchers worldwide. These scientists have agreed to perform their experiments in an open data-sharing environment (data-sharing agreement). The goals of ChemBank are to provide life scientists unfettered access to biomedically relevant data and tools heretofore available almost exclusively in the private sector. We intend for ChemBank to be a planning and discovery tool for chemists, biologists, and drug hunters anywhere, with the only necessities being a computer, access to the Internet, and a desire to extract knowledge from public experiments whose greatest value is likely to reside in their collective sum.

The German bill elegantly resolves doubts about permission and makes publisher dissent irrelevant. Moreover, Germany already has something of a mandate. The OA policy of Germany's DFG (Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft), the country's primary public funding agency, tells grantees that they should deposit their DFG-funded research in OA repositories. The German OA bill is unusual for seeking to facilitate OA by amending copyright law, a strategy tried in the US with the Sabo Bill (June 2003) and since abandoned. In a country more likely to amend copyright law in the wrong direction than the right direction, like the US, this is a very difficult and uncertain strategy. Dear Professionals: As part of ongoing project, Development of OAI-based Institutional Repository Services in India, sponsored by Department of Scientific and Industrial research, Ministry of Science and technology, Govt. of India, the National Centre for Science Information (NCSI), Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, will be conducting a training workshop on "Setting up and Maintaining Institutional Repositories using EPrints", during 26-28 July 2006. The main focus of the workshop will be to provide an intensive practical training to the participants to setup and maintain their Institutional Repositories (IR) using the "EPrints.org" software. The workshop is being conducted to encourage research institutes, Universities and R&D organizations to setup their interoperable IRs. Dear Raj I dont agree with you that only Ph.D and M.Phil students have the communication skills. How does Ph.D and M.Phil enhances the skills of communication. Staying in India every body what is tough to get it cleared even then people are commenting and favouring the exemption from NET. I dont understand any examination which has so far been quite tough to clear, has got no value very recently. And not only the security issue= s but also many other routine and repetitive tasks like stock verification, sorting of books, check-out/in, etc=85 can be automated without much human intervention, which leads to better & improved services, efficient use of = library staff and avoiding inadvertent manual mistakes. Another advantage of RFID over magnetic tattle is one need not to swipe lib= rary resources for charging and discharging magnetic tattle every time reso= urces go out and come into the library after checkout and checkin. In case of RFID the security bit in the tag automatically gets disarmed on checkout and armed on checkin without one needs to swipe it manually. Moreover the skilled staffs who undergo rigorous two year training would be freed by the automated process and can be put to more meaningful tasks viz=. reference services than repetitive works. Dear Fellow Professional NIPFP library we use to receive 50 CD-ROM on and average per month. storing and retrieving these CD-ROM is difficult and more difficult is in dust proof. For reveling this problem we find ' Imation DiscStakka CD/DVD Library" is useful Space saving Single unit can store 100 CD-ROM Dust proof obtitracker software given along with unit Database of these CD Rom can create the following searchable field Name -Title of the CD ROM Type - (various types of CD, Data CD and audio CD etc.,) Content (IT takes automatically all the files in the CD_ROM) Comments (About the CD Abstract of 5 lines) IMage (Image of the CD cover can be store) It can be connect with USB port at any PC. NET Exemption

Dear Members , From last twenty days we have received so many massages on UGC NET exemption for M.Phil,Phd students why you Library Professionals are taking it unstandardization of Education . You know level of research work in our country from last ten years are going down at very rapid pace because students intend to go to prepare for exam and they bye pass the reseach ,intellctual process of education . Exemption for M.Phil and Phd student is the only way to incease the research level. Think about research in scinece and other stream where a single idea if you generate and patent it can earn good reputation and money for country. So don't think exemption of NET for M.Phil and Phd student is decreasing our education standard. In my opinion We should impliment the NET Exam to get Admission in M.Phil and only after M.Phil students can enrollin Phd this should be the model . secondly if any one who cleared UGC _NEt in library science with old traditional syallabus how can teach new concept and technology application in Libraries to students . if UGC Net exam cleared person don't have good Communication skills how he/she can teach student ? National Workshop on "Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE" to be held at ISEC, Bangalore between 26-27, June 2006 The Institute for social and Economic Change (ISEC) is a multi-disciplinary research and training institute in Social Sciences. It is one of the major ICSSR research organizations established by Professor V K R V Rao, in the year 1972 in Bangalore. ISEC Library and ICSSR will be jointly conducting a National Workshop on " Open Archives Initiative and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE" between 26-27, June 2006 at the campus of ISEC, Nagarabhavi PO, Dr. V.K.R.V Rao Avenue, Bangalore-560 072. The Institute is well equipped with fully air-conditioned seminar halls, a computer lab, a meeting room with Multi-media and OHP facilities. The Workshop will arrange invited lectures cum demonstrations and practical experience on computers (afternoon sessions) by eminent scholars and experts in their respective individual subject fields. The topics to be covered in the above workshop are: 1. Introduction on "Digitization of Library and Information Centres". 2. Open Source Digital Software for libraries 3. DSPACE Software 4. Open Archives Initiative (OAI) and Institutional Repositories 5. Creation of OAI and Institutional Repositories with DSPACE Regisration fee: There is no registration fee. Accommodation: The organizers will provide accommodation by charging a nominal fee of Rs. 125/- per day per participant at institute's guesthouse. Eligibility for participation: The workshop invites two participants from each organization - One from the Library and another, a computer professional, from their systems department. Total number of participants has been restricted to twenty from ten organisations only. Preference will be given to the participants from ICSSR funded research institutions and other social science research institutions. Registration is accepted on first cum and first served basis. The resource persons will come from DRTC, Bangalore and IGIDR, Mumbai.
