The literature related to library marketing is growing, which is a sign of increasing interest as well as scholarship. This volume is an important addition to that body of knowledge and reflects the views of more than forty library professionals around the globe. These international perspectives bring depth and clarity to the marketing of libraries discussion. This volume is divided into six sections: Marketing Concept, a Changing Perspective; Marketing in Libraries Around the World; the Role of Library Associations; Education, Training and Research; Excellence in Marketing; and Databases and Other Marketing Literature. These broad categories are further subdivided into papers that are flanked by abstracts and extensive bibliographical references. Section I contains two papers focusing on the theoretical frame of marketing and how it has evolved and expanded over time. This is an excellent approach to helping the reader understand the numerous papers which follow. The novice reader will become informed and the experienced library marketer will develop an enhanced awareness of the scope of marketing in the library context. Section II considers how marketing is utilized as a management tool in libraries around the world. Geographical areas addressed include Denmark, Norway, Spain, Finland, China, France, Africa, Kenya, Pakistan, Australia, Romania, Croatia, and South Africa. While not country-specific, the final paper considers marketing from the perspective of knowledge management within the financial services sector. In Section III, the role of library associations is considered as an important factor in marketing libraries. The history of IFLA's Management and Marketing Section is reviewed and a specific look at public libraries through the IFLA/UNESCO Guidelines for Development is presented. Subsequent papers examine the American Library Association, libraries in the UK and National Library Week in Lithuania. Education, training and research become the focus in Section IV. Papers in this section take a close look at curricula in library education institutions in the United States, Canada, India and Estonia; and training for the LIS community in the UK and India. Two papers focusing on specific applications conclude this section. Excellence is addressed in Section V. This is an eclectic section, looking at quality from a variety of viewpoints. Beginning with a listing of awards, followed by a paper discussing awards in detail, the section moves on to discuss specific applications of marketing in the UK, the Houston [Texas/USA] Public Library, and Barcelona [Spain]. Finally, in Section VI, databases and reviews of the literature are featured, ending with an overview of the Marketing Library Services Newsletter. This reviewer would have preferred to see the literature review included in Section I, but that is a small point in the light of the overall wealth of material presented in this book. Thanks Devadason ================================================= Professor Ganesh Bhattacharyya Prof. Bhattacharyya as many of you might know was my teacher, colleague and best friend. My first association with him was in 1969, when I joined the Documentation Research and Training Centre (DRTC) as a student. I met Prof. Neelameghan first, and was happy that it would be fine to be a student there. But when I met Prof. Bhattacharya "Oh my goodness" (an expression which he uses often in private communications), I was really terrified and thought that it would be a tiresome affair to spend the rest of the 14 months in DRTC with this Professor. He was the very nature of Bengal (tiger) in his frowning expression, absolute strictness with regard to assignments and insistence on precise communication in writing and speaking. "If you are not clear in what you say or write, then there is some aberration in your thinking" he used to say. But after a few months I realized that beneath that shell (it is an egg shell, actually) there is a soft and humane nature full of compassion and helping attitude. He was fully dedicated to his work starting from the job of newspaper delivery boy to supplement his parents' income to support his studies until his retirement as Professor and Head of DRTC and the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Branch. He was a faithful disciple of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan fully devoted to expanding and extending his research. He has made several significant contributions to the field of Library and Information Science, his most significant contribution being the development of the Postulate-based Permuted Subject Indexing System (POPSI). Whosesoever would ever think of producing an approximation to classified sequence (organizing sequence) in alphabetic arrangement of subject headings. He thought about it and did it. He also proposed "Classaurs" a faceted vocabulary control and indexing tool. He was a very good teacher with clear interpretation of fundamental principles and theories delivered with several illustrative examples. He was a good orator. A lecture on "The Central Theme of Baghavath Gheetha" was arranged by the "Ladies Club of Malleswaram, Bangalore". Swami Ranganathananda of Ramakrishna Mission gave the lecture. It was such a wonderful presentation that everyone was spell bound. When Swami Ranganathananda finished his oration, Prof. Bhattacharyya rose to give a Vote of Thanks as per the scheduled programme. At the same time almost everyone stood up, applauded and started to leave, as they all know very well, that after such a presentation by Swami Ranganathananda there would be nothing of importance afterwards. Prof. Bhattacharyya called in a loud voice "Ladies and Gentlemen" and at the same time removed his famous brown colour coat in his characteristic style. Hanging it on the back of the chair he continued "Is it not appropriate for us to spend just 5 more minutes to thank Swami Raganathananda who had been standing for almost one hour to enlighten us?" The whole crowd just sat down in absolute silence equally spell bound, and Professor Bhattacharyya spoke for about 10 minutes drawing an equally prominent applause for his vote of thanks. He was fully and totally dedicated to DRTC and devoted his full time for the development of the institute. In fact, it is he who initiated PhD programme with Karnatak University but for which none in DRTC would have had the chance of doing PhD in Library and Information Science in India. Almost all the students of DRTC have been immensely benefited by Prof. Bhattacharyya's teaching. His presentations and papers have been widely acknowledged. My research work was totally based on his work and it would not have been possible for me to do my work but for his work. I am extremely sad to hear about his departure, but I am sure his work will stand to the benefit of many. I express my sympathy to all his relatives and especially to his daughters Bobli and Lovely and their family members. May God give them the strength to withstand this loss and wisdom to move forward. Remembering Prof Bhattacharya

Friends, I wish to echo what Dr Ganesh Bhattacharya had told us in one of his guest lectures at the Department of Library and Information Science, Karnataka University in the year 1972-73. He said, "What librarians need is one mile knowledge with one inch depth, and not one inch knowledge with one mile depth." How true! He has left great impact on all who came in contact with him. A few open source digital library software are popularly used to develop and manage digital libraries. Dear Professionals, I agreed with Ms. Deepa's view. I am also reporting to Head Admin a Lt. Col., who is not even knowing about the cataloguing system of library. I have to face a lot of silly questions regarding library which I don't expect from my Boss. One incident I am telling. Joining to my current organisation I have classified all the documents with DDC classification code. As a result the book which was in Cupboard-3 was being shifted to Cupboard -6. But my Reporting Boss told me that he wants to see the book in the same cupboard only. Please note that Last year I had sent the same for a discussion. I am having 15 years of experience with Industrial Library in three different Organisations. I have always felt that Most of the time the Boss which we get doesn't have interest on library. And at the time of Evaluation they don't even recognised us as technically educated. Please see Ms Deepa's view in the same way also, which I have highlighted. Hi, I used to work for a software company in India as a Librarian (Information Officer) some 6 years ago. And yes, as you said I used to report to the HR head too! Worse still we had a dual reporting system where the appraisals were done my the HR and for all professional advice I used to turn to the corporate head librarian. The HR person hardly understood the importance of a library and a librarian and never actually appreicated the services offered by the library and thus got no recognition! I think we librarians get our due recognition and professional satisfaction when we have a good line manager who is able to guide us and advice us in our professional activities. As you rightly pointed out it should be a R&D head or a knowledge management head to whom we should report to. Thanks. Deepa

He was closely associated with NAL in various capacities, as selection committee member and also an advisor in various projects at the center. His contributions to the L & IS profession, especially in the development of POPSI indexing system have won international acclaim. His achievements have made our community proud. Hello All, Could we have an open discussion on Copyright Laws in India...what constitutes a copyright violation? 1. Photocopying of books and keeping them for display and use in the library? 2. Scanning of books - say for using as a digital library? After all, these are not done for any commercial purpose, we do not sell them, they are for everyday use, especially when there is a huge demand for a particular book.....does this constitute a copyright violation? Can Academic Libraries not keep multiple copies of photocopies books which would really help the students? What about scanning books? Can books not be scanned and stored digitally? Have any of you tried these methods? Do they work? Are they legal? Can a library do such a thing? How do you handle situations when books are in great demand? Could you discuss these and other such related issues? BANGALORE: Get set for another CET. This test is for PhD applicants! Tired of receiving inane dissertation papers and approving them simply because a candidate would have put in five or six years, and also faced with the dilemma of approving thousands of applicants for PhD, all state universities have decided to conduct an entrance test to screen applicants. The move which will come into effect this academic year will, however, be university-specific. A candidate has to make a presentation about his project to a doctoral panel once in three months. At its last meeting, the BU academic council meeting suggested that candidates be assessed on their performance in two papers of the CET.A merit list will be prepared by allotting 50% marks for entrance test and 50% for PG marks. The CET format has been left to the discretion of each university. "This has been done since the generic aptitude and exposure of candidates vary in different parts of the state," university sources said. Candidates, who have passed examinations like NET/SLET/GATE/JRF or M Phil or belonging to FIP/QIP programmes, are exempted from the CET. Also, candidates selected to work under specialised-funded projects and government-sponsored foreign students can directly register for a PhD programme. It is also mandatory that before applying for a PhD, a candidate has to have had at least two articles published in a recognised journal. The move has evoked mixed reactions from vice-chancellors. "We used to conduct a CET a few years back, but there was not a single failure. So the test was redundant," said Mysore V-C Shashidhar Prasad. Mangalore V-C K M Cauveryappa feels it is not possible to judge the ability of a candidate of study by a generic test. "Instead, it will be better if the guide interviews the candidate," he said. However, universities cannot escape the CET as it is an Inter-University Board decision. BU has suggested that candidates be tested on general aptitude and on techniques of research methodology. An "emotionally aware" computer being developed by British and US scientists will be able to estimate an individual's thoughts by analysing a combination of facial movements that represent underlying feelings. Applications of the computer could range from improving people's driving skills to helping companies tailor advertising to people's moods. It could also be useful for online teaching ? to show whether someone understands what is being explained and in improving road safety by determining if a driver was confused, bored or tired. Hello: Indianjournals.com and NITIE are co hosting a seminar on E Journals and the Global promotion of Indian Journals on 1st July 2006 in NITIE Mumbai. Those who are keen to attend may get in touch with me. It is planned to be a one day seminar. While trying to collect information about the total number of journals published in India and the total number hosted on any foreign fulltext database I have come accross only two Journals Finance India and The IIMB Management Review Journal. (1) From the Financial Times, June 20, 2006: Royal Society tests new system of free access to papers By Jon Boone in London The world’s oldest learned society will on Wednesday tear up its 340-year-old business model with the launch of an “open access” journal allowing people to read its new scientific papers free of charge. The Royal Society in London virtually invented the subscription-based system of peer-reviewed scientific journals when it started the Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society in 1665. But in a trial that will be closely watched by researchers and journal publishers around the world, it will allow authors to pay for costs of publication themselves. Authors, or their research sponsors, who choose to pay to make their papers immediately available online will be charged £300 ($553, €439) per A4 page... The Royal Society hopes to test the viability of the scheme by charging the full economic cost of publication. ... The open access movement has been helped by recent developments, including the decision by the Wellcome Trust, one of the world’s biggest research granting bodies, that all articles produced through work it has funded will have to be published on an open access basis from October. It seems that open access journal publishing, known as the "gold" version of OA, isn't paved with gold. In an eye-opening analysis in the journal Nature, the Public Library of Science (PLoS), which launched its first open access journals in 2003, is said to be facing a "looming financial crisis." According to Nature, which analyzed the non-profit PLoS's publicly available records on file with the Internal Revenue Service, PLoS ran a deficit of almost $1 million last year, and its total income from fees and advertising currently covers just 35 percent of its costs. While revenue is increasing slightly, spending is increasing at a greater clip, up to $5.5 million over the past three years combined. In response, with its grant funds being steadily depleted, PLoS has announced that it will raise author fees, effective July 1, for its open access journals from $1500 to $2500 for flagship journals PLoS Biology and PLoS Medicine; and to $2000 for its community journals PLoS Computational Biology, PLoS Genetics, and PLoS Pathogens. In a release, officials from the non-profit PLoS said that, with three years of operational experience to draw on, it was "time to adjust this model so that our publication fees reflect more closely the costs of publication." Still, even with the increased fees, Nature reports that PLoS will have to rely on "philanthropy" to survive for the foreseeable future, including its funding from the Sandler and the Gordon and Betty Moore Foundations. PLoS director of publishing Mark Patterson downplayed the financial situation, noting that the fledgling publisher is only in its fourth year. Still, more than a few commercial publishers may be saying "I told you so." In the early days of open access publishing, commercial publishers repeatedly suggested that author fees for PLoS, at $1500, and for-profit open access publisher BioMed Central, then $500, were unsustainably low. Last year, BioMed Central increased its author fees, from $525 to as much as $1700. Commercial competitors, meanwhile, including Springer, Blackwell, and most recently Elsevier, have begun offering open-access-like publishing options, for fees closer to $3000.
