Dear Professional Colleagues, Few colleagues have sought clarification on birth date of Dr. S.R. Ranganathan as the day is being celebrated on different dates. He was born on 9th August 1892 at Shiyali, Tamil Nadu. However in the official records like school it has been mentioned as 12th August. This being the case many associations / institutions celebrate the day on any of these dates. One can also celebrate the day between 9 - 12th as has been practiced by many associations in the country. Govt. of Kranataka has to go by official date and hence has declared August 12th as LIBRARIAN'S DAY. (Dr. I.R.N. Respected Members', In keeping with the increased focus on creating world class infrastructure in higher education, the Planning Commission has outlined a Rs 1,31,022 crore Seven Year Higher Education Plan.For the XIth plan period, the specified plan would be allocated Rs 55,987 crore.This plan will include 16 new Central Universities, 5 Medical & Engineering Colleges, 370 Degree Colleges, 8 new IITs, 7 new IIMs & 20 new NITs.At present in India there are 380 existing universities. Dear Professional Colleagues, Government of Karnataka has declared August 12th, the birth date of The Father of Indian Library Movement Dr. S.R.Ranganathan as LIBRARIANS' DAY as per Government Order No. ED 154 LIB 2007, Bangaluru, dated 07-08-2007. This is the first instance of Government declaring on this matter in India and also an eye opener for other States and Central Government to follow. The entire Library community and Professional Associations should try in this direction. We should appreciate the efforts of Indian Public Library Association particularly that of Shri. P.Y. Rajendrakumar, Director, Department of Public Librarries and the guidance and support of Hon. Minister of Primary Education and Libraries, Government of Karnataka Shri Basavaraj S. According to sources of M/o HRD, the Ministry has prepared the draft of the bill to establish Central Univ. in 16 states.This draft has been sent to concerned Ministries for discussion so that final draft of the bill can be prepared. Prime Minister Dr. Manmohan Sigh, M/o HRD Shri Arjun Singh, Planning Commission Deputy-Chairperson Shri Montek Sigh Ahluwalia & University Grants Commission have decided to establish Central Univ. in 16 States & Colleges in 355 Districts of our country in a meeting held in June. Sources said that these Central Universities will be open in Bihar, Uttarakhand, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, Orissa, Jammu & Kashmir, Gujarat, Maharashtra, Karnataka etc.Our Prime Minister has announced to establish a Central University in the last visit to Jammu & Kashmir.15 % students will be given Higher Education in the 11th Five Year Plan.Around Five Thousand Crore Rupees are expected on the establishment of these Central Universities.
