In the three months since it became open source software (OSS), there have been 6000+ downloads of the software worldwide. NewGenLib is predicated on using international metadata and interoperability standards and web protocols. The two agencies involved in the development of the software: Kesavan Institute of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM) (www.kiikm.org) and Verus Solutions Pvt. Ltd., (VSPL) envision the spread of NewGenLib and other open source solutions in libraries in the country and region via advocacy, workshops and services to libraries. The NewGenLib Foundation has been formed to further the use of open source technologies, NewGenLib and also to contribute to its continued enhancement. Workshop Objectives and Content 1. Paradigms of the open source movement and the pros and cons of OSS 2. Technology and architecture of NewGenLib 3. Metadata and inter-operability standards on which NewGenLib in predicated and hands-on exercises on using these. 4. Dear all, Does the changing profile of the users of library services, particularly in metropolitan cities have ever appered you to be a bit more challenging in comparison to dealing with our own traditional Indian users? What I am hinting at is that whether the ever increasing volume of multinational clienteles speaking in different langauges (however poor in English), showing different kind of cultural behaviour and expecting a new kind of service need some rethinking at our part? Is it true that dealing with them professionally with all seriousness of our vocation requires a paradigm shift in our understanding of how the library activities should be carried out; how the behaviour of library staff need to be modified/sensitized; what new facilities (like comfortable reading halls, good working toilets, efficient canteens, etc.) may be added; how the library hours can be lenghtened; the period of loan and library fines may be standardized in keeping with international library practices; over all a new work culture with emphasis on resposiveness, answerability, openess and all fairness in dealing with the users without any prejudice on account of race/colour/language/nationalitities are required? In light of the above, would you support the demand that the syllabus of the paper concerned with Library Administration require certain changes with more pronounced emphasis on "Organizationa Behavior"? Dear Majumdar The easiest way for on hand Libsys training is to visit any of the neighburhood libraries where they have implemented this integrated library package and learn sitting along with the staff . Otherwise, you can borrow from some professionals the Libsys User's manual for different modules, sit on on your PC and follow the instructions. Another alternative but a costlier one is to visit the local Libsys vendor and learn with their instructors. But please note that there are other alternatives to Libsys available in the Indian market and they are at least equally good or even better. IT major IBM India Private Limited is now working on a talking website at its India Research Laboratory. This will ensure that even the unlettered can create a website and access information from others for business transactions. Disclosing the details to Business Standard, IBM India Research Laboratory Director Guruduth Banavar said pilots of the project have been completed and were in the final stages. The highlight is that it will be a spoken website. An individual can call up the registry (agency) to create a site for him. There will be a list of services and products available, the price and time frame set for him. The clients will call up the same registry to perform a 'search'. Instead of keying it on a computer, they will spell out the requirements. The registry will throw up choices that are closest to the search criterion. Banavar said several such registries will be created for locale and product-specific talking websites. Dear all: To begin with, we planned to include in our IR all the newspaper clippings(1925s and onwards), which are very much in demand by historians of science. We scanned all the newspaper clippings in our archives (relating to Raman) and sought copyright clearance from all the newspapers, (which they gave readily) and posted them in our IR; Then, we showcased all the research output of RRI from 1971 to date, keeping them open access wherever publishers have given permission to authors. The other articles are restricted access and one can e-mail us for a copy; With the above exposure, we hit upon the idea of digitizing all of C.V. Raman's collected works, published by the Indian Academy of Sciences in 6 volumes and followed the following norms: - We first got the Indian Academy's permission to digitize and make pdfs and host in IR; - Then we sought individual publisher's copyright permission for each article/s highlighting that papers published are of historical significance, which needs preservation and wide dissemination by placing in the IR; - Many of the publishers gave copyright clearance with the result that we could host them in our IR and make them open access. For carrying out such a stupendous task, one needs an open mind, sustained effort, dedication and team spirit. Arun The simple solution lies in reducing the age of copyright for all literary works from the current 75 years or so to a more reasonable level of say less than 10 years. In case of India it is some X number of years after the death of the author! Even patents have maximum of 14 years for expiry date (Some countries, I think, have 17 years). OA champions should indeed focus on getting the law makers attention to the exceedingly long life for copyright. But any changes in the copyright law at global level is a bigger battle!
