Respected All Library Professionals, Karnataka Public Service Commission has invited applications for filing up 167 Librarians posts in First Grade colleges of Karnataka. The qualification is MLISc+UGC. My question is why librarians are categorized under 'C' grade?. If Librarians are 'C' grade, what are the qualifications for the posts in 'C' grade? For the Lecturer post in Group 'A'  only the PG with First class is the qualification!!!!.  Why this difference?? Experts can answer. Thimmappa N. General considerations * ABCD is alligned with the CISIS/1660 version 5.2 platform, and will eventually be made compatible with later versions. This means that the inverted file entries are 60 characters long, and will increase in length in the ISIS-NBP based version. * ABCD is compatible with programming languages accepted by the GNU licences, i.e. PHP, Java, Javascript, Python, etc. The current version of ABCD is written in PHP v.5. * The system is totally language independent. The product will be made available in Spanish, English, French and Portuguese by end of 2008, and can be translated into other languages in the same way the CDS/ISIS applications always were. Cataloguing module The main feature of the cataloguing module is that it accepts different database structures in a transparent way. Each database has its own configuration files which ABCD interprets in order to apply the necessary procedures to manage each information structure. This follows the same philosophy as CDS/ISIS. Each database has its own FDT (Field Definition Table), etc. The first version of ABCD has the following functions available: * User control through a database defining username, login, password, user level (Administrator, Operator, Librarian, End user, etc.), where specific information sources and access rights are established. * Database creation in three modalities: 1. Creating new databases in the traditional, four-step CDS/ISIS way: defining the FDT, a worksheet, a display format (PFT) and an indexing format (FST). ABCD generates the necessary environment files and creates the database in the Web server. 2. Copying an existing database from the Web server, and making changes afterwards. 3. Creating a database in the Web server based on a Winisis database available on the local machine. The ABCD system performs all the necessary conversions for the change of operative environment. * Management of multiple structures, providing templates for the separate entry of subfields. The structures can be based on MARC21, UNIMARC, LILACS, CEPAL, AGRIS, or any other ad-hoc structure that the user prefers. ABCD gives the user an extraordinarily wide capacity to define the FDT. It is possible to use repeatable subfields, to give names to subfields and to associate special help messages, pick-lists, etc. to each of them. * Dynamic building of data entry worksheets based on specifications given in the FDT. This table contains not only the specification of the ISIS fields proper, but also the characteristics which the fields will deploy in the worksheets (textbox, select, checkbox options, html area, text area), as well as the facilities to present controlled vocabularies related to the fields. * Capture of controlled vocabulary through authority files, obtained from the same or external databases. This feature is managed through inverted files. * Capture of controlled vocabulary through tables defined in TXT files. * Identification of fields requiring association to external resources (images, pdf, xls, etc) in order to upload these to the server. * Management of different kinds of records in each database, presenting the adequate worksheet for each type. * Management of multiple worksheets, dynamically defined by the user. * Access to records through the MFN, advanced search or alphabetical listing of a field defined as the main entry. * Creation, editing and deletion of records. * Presentation of search results using various display formats. * Printing module allowing different print formats and sorting criteria (depending on the number of records). Facilities for sending the results to wordprocessors or spreadsheets. * A module for the generation of lists and indexes. * Generation of scripts for real-time quality control during data entry. We'll tell you more about ABCD functionalities in later notes. It is funded by Arcadia, http://www.arcadiatrust.org/ (formerly known as the Lisbet Rausing Charitable Fund, a grant-making fund established in 2001) in pursuit of its general aim to support fundamental research into important issues in the humanities and social science. The focus of the Programme is on the preservation and copying of important but vulnerable archives throughout the world. Doctoral Dissertation Fellowship This award fosters research in academic librarianship by encouraging and assisting doctoral students in the field with their dissertation research. Award $1,500 cash and a plaque donated by Thomson Scientific. Eligibility The recipient of the fellowship must meet the following qualifications: * Be an active doctoral student enrolled in an accredited degree-granting institution * Be engaged in researching a topic related to academic librarianship * Have completed all coursework * Have had a dissertation proposal accepted by the institution * A recipient of the fellowship may not receive it a second time. * Applicant need not be an ACRL member Criteria Proposals will be judged primarily on merit with emphasis on the following: * Potential significance of the research to the field of academic librarianship. (No attempt will be made to define academic librarianship, but the subject should be consistent with topics usually published in College & Research Libraries or key refereed library and information science research journals or presented at ACRL meetings.) * Validity of the methodology and proposed methods of analysis * Originality and creativity * Clarity and completeness of the proposal * Presentation of a convincing plan for completion in a reasonable amount of time * Evidence of a continuing interest in scholarship such as a previous publication record Awardee Obligation Recipients of the fellowship are required to submit a 6-10 page report of the results of their research to the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) within two months of the project's completion. A 500-word summary for possible publication in C&RL News is also due at that time. Submissions Qualified students who wish to be considered for the fellowship may apply by e-mailing a brief (ten pages or less double-spaced) proposal that includes the following: * Description of the research, including significance and methodology * Schedule for completion * Budget and budget justification for items for which support is sought. Earlier, he was Head of the Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore Centre from Oct. 2002 to Sept. 07 Prof. Rao joined DRTC in 1970. Since then he is been involved in teaching and research in applied statistics, (-- bibliometrics / informetrics and scientometrics), programming, library automation, information retrieval, information management and DBMS with special emphasis on bibliographical databases. He has been on several UNESCO/UNDP missions. Prof. Rao has also worked as a Visiting Professor at Limburgs University (now known as University of Hasselt), Diepenbeek, Belgium in 1990, 2001,2007 and at Addis Ababa University in 1990. He has visited a number of library schools in India as a resource person to deliver a series of special lectures. In the early 1970's he was involved in developing software to provide SDI service based on locally developed databases. This software was implemented for the first time in India on an experimental basis at BHEL, Hyderabad in 1975. Prof. Rao was a founder Executive Committee Member of the International Society for Scientometrics / Informetrics, The Netherlands. till 2005. Prof. Rao's research interests include growth and obsolescence of literature, library statistics, theories of bibliometrics, scientometrics and informetrics; Library automation, information retrieval, information management, in addition to the development of software for library applications. Based on his research and teaching experience, he has authored two books (-- Quantitative Methods in Library and Information Science and Library Automation (it has been translated into Portuguese language.)) Both the books have been recognized as textbooks for students at the post-graduate level in some of the Indian and foreign Universities. He has edited a number of seminar volumes both at the national and international levels and also was a Guest Editor for a few journals in Information field in India. Forwarded message regarding the forthcoming Integrated Library Automation Software from ISIS family ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________________ Dear colleagues, As previously anounced, here comes a first note or information nugget about ABCD = Automation of Libraries and Documentation Centers. ABCD is a long held aspiration for the ISIS community, since the first MS-DOS version came out more than 20 years ago. Finally, this aspiration is about to come true. We'll first present a list of its basic functionalities and attributes. In further nuggets we'll give details about each of them. * ABCD is an integrated library management software comprising the main basic library functions: · Definition of any number of new databases (similar to Winisis), which includes: FDT, PFT, FST, and worksheets directly on the Web, or copying from existing ones either from the Web or from Winisis on a local hard disk, · cataloguing of books and serials, independently of the format: MARC, LILACS, AGRIS, etc. · end-user searching (OPAC), · loans circulation, · acquisitions, · statistics, · library services like SDI, barcode printing, quality control, etc. * The software will be compatible with CDS/ISIS database technology for the bibliographic databases, i.e. reading ISIS-databases and making use of ISIS Formatting Language (or something functionally similar) for producing output (PFT) and indexing (FST) of records; * The software will run on both Windows and Linux platforms; * The software will allow the use of MARC-21 cataloging formats and other current standards or protocols (Dublin Core, METS, Z39.50...); * The software will be published as Free and Open Source Software (FOSS) with the accompanying tools for the developer community; * The software will be intrinsically multi-lingual, with English, Spanish, Portuguese and French interfaces being available by the end of 2008; * The software will be fully documented for system-managers in at least one language, preferably English, by the end of 2008; * UNICODE-compatibility will at least be envisaged and prepared, if not in the actual version then for an upcoming future version, which is part of the ISIS-NBP paralell project; * A testing version will be ready by September 2008 to be presented in the 3rd World Isis Meeting; * This version and manuals will be used as training materials for an international Training Workshop on the software in March 2009. Most of you had written in the comments box that the results be made public. I am doing the same through this email. Later on I will put this report on some OA Repository. [This document and the associated data can be freely distributed and used according to Creative Commons license - Attribution-No Derivative Works 2.5 India - http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-nd/2.5/in/] Introduction: Online discussion forums are one of earliest form of online communication among people with common interests. Many of these forums are meant for people associated with a profession. LIS-Forum (LIS-Forum, 2008) is such an email based discussion forum (list-serv) for Library and Information Science (LIS) Professionals. It has been there since 1995 (Rajashekar, 2002) and now has more than 4100 subscribers. This online forum is the most popular and oldest in India. It has wide spread subscription base among Library and Information Professionals from India. It also has decent subscribers from outside India. It would be matter of interest to know what these subscribers think of LIS profession. Why did they entered into this profession? Was it a pure chance, lack of alternatives or deliverate choice? What is their attitude towards the core philosphy of the profession. A brief survey was done on the subscribers in the month of April 2008 to get some insight on these issues. However, the basic objective of this survey was to demonstrate a feature of Google Docs' online spreadsheet (Google Docs, 2008) that can to exploited to conduct online surveys. Methodology: An online questionnaire was created using Google Docs' online spreadsheet (Singh, Conduct Research and Surveys Online: Design, Send and Get Results Directly in Spreadsheet Using Google Docs, 2008). Google Docs has a feature to create an online form and link back it to a spreadsheet on its server. The data entered through forms gets entered directly into this linked spreadsheet. The questionnaire can be sent directly through email to target survey participants. Most email clients and web based emails services can directly display the form in email of the recipients. The recipient can fill in the values and click on submit button. In case the form is not displayed properly, a link to the online form is always there for the recipient to visit and respond. A very simple survey questionnaire (Singh, LIS Motivation Survey, 2008) was created. The objective was to collect only minimal but relevant information. No personal details were collected. Only four questions were asked. Three were close-ended questions where the respondents had to just click on options. The last question was open-ended asking comments from respondents. These questions were asked: • Your Age Group? • Your Occupation? • Why you choose LIS Profession? • Any comments? The questionnaire was mailed to LIS-Forum. The LIS-Forum moderator approved the email containing the survey on 21st April 2008. The responses started pouring in from 11:01 A.M. First day saw most of the responses. On third day, the responses tampered to just three responses. However, responses kept pouring in even later. The last response that was included in the study is the 57th response received on 3rd May 2008. Analysis: 1. Age Groups: The responses were grouped age-wise. Most responses (42%) were from respondents in the age group of 25 -30 years. This was followed (30%) by those in the age group of 31-35. Thus this relatively young age group of 25 to 35 years combined together formed 72% of responses. Age Groups Total Above 60 1 Between 25 - 30 24 Between 31 - 35 17 Between 36 - 40 2 Between 41 - 45 4 Between 46 - 50 3 Between 51- 55 3 Between 56 - 60 1 Under 25 2 Grand Total 57 2. Occupations: Most respondents (65%) were employed in LIS domain. Apart from these 10% were employed in LIS domain as well research students. While 7% more were doing correspondence courses to improve their qualifications while in service. Thus 82% of the respondents were employed in LIS domain. Only one (2%) respondent was working in non-LIS domain. Reason for Joining Library and Information Science (LIS) Profession: Interestingly, almost half (46%) of the persons said they loved the philosophy of LIS profession. Twenty percent of the people said that they joined the profession because jobs were / are easily available. About same number (23%) of people said that they did not care to know much it before joining. Reason for choosing LIS Profession Total I had to do something, What is your problem? 2 I loved the philosophy of the profession 26 I was employed in another field, studied LIS during job and now I am well off. 1 Jobs are / were easily available in LIS 11 Just joined it without caring what it is all about 13 Nothing better was available to me 1 Wanted to spend some more time at university 2 (blank) Grand Total 56 Breaking down responses by two major age groups (25-30 and 31-35) revealed an interesting fact. In 25-30 age group, 9 out of 24 (37.5%) respondents said that they did not care what the profession was all about while joining it. However, in the age group of 31-35, only 1 out of 16 (6.25%) said so. This gives an indication that people tend to love core philosophy of the profession with passage of time. 4. Respondents' General Comments: There was an open ended question asking comments of the respondents. Most of the people wanted to know the results of this survey. Some were with very positive comments towards the profession. At the same time, few were very critical about joining the profession. One person even thought to the extent that juniors are being exploited by their senior professionals. Limitation of study: The questionnaire had a very poor response. It would be risky to draw major conclusions from this study. This study can only reflect the views of active LIS-Forum subscribers who opted to respond. Conclusion: Though the response rate was poor, but still the study does tell about the attitude of active participants of the LIS-Forum who decided to respond promptly. Majority of the responses came within 48 hours. The methodology of the survey, that is using Google Docs, hence has been tested. This methodology works and thus can be used for online surveys. This study also showed that relatively young people from the age group of 25 to 35 years are active on online forum for LIS professionals. This active population either has positive attitude towards the philosophy of profession or consider LIS as a career. Moreover, their commitment and love towards the professional philosophy increases with time. Further studies on this issue are required. The spreadsheet containing the survey responses is being shared as open data to help future similar studies (LIS motivation survey: spreadsheet with survey responses, 2008). Horowhenua Library Trust and Katipo Communications in New Zealand are pleased to annouce the release of Kete Version 1.0. Kete provides a platform for developing community contributed content. It allows uploading of different types of content: topics (html text based content), documents, audio files, images, movies and links. Kete is the mâori word for basket, in the Kete system a basket is the overall organising structure for content. Beyond baskets content is organised by the community using tagging and relating pieces of content to each other. Kete is developed with Ruby on Rails, utilizes Zebra z39.50 full text indexing engine developed by IndexData, is fully compatible with Koha, and is released under a GNU General Public License (GPL). Kete recently won the 2007 3M Award for Innovation in New Zealand Libraries, and a Special Mention at the 2007 World Summit Awards for the North America - Oceania Region in the e-inclusion section. Institutional Repository (IR) consists of formally organized and managed collection of digital content generated by faculty, staff and students of an institution.
