I dont think anybody can restrict someone whos might be really interested in doing something. This is our Indian education system, we are not allowed to do something we are interested in doing something. But forced to do which we do not like at all. Come on people wake up, its high time to restrict something. Do our professionals know something about multitasking? Librarian has to be one, moreover it is his part of professional requirement. Wake up people wake up from slumber!! First of all there is hell of misunderstanding about the librarians in India, moreover if he is restricted to enhance his knowledge then this profession will be drowned. This today's concept of librarian is framed because of old professionals who hardly did work towards progress and so mainly the professionals are not at all PROACTIVE. Please change yourself and fit in today's world. Darwins theory holds good for all times.. "Survival of the Fittest", keep yourself fit to compete with other professions. Part time Research

Dear All, It seems to me that the University of Kerala has taken a right decision not to allow working librarians to do part time research for obtaining PhD. If any librarian is interested, he can do research without any registration and publish his findings in research journals, without affecting his job. When a person is employed as a librarian, he should do justice to his job for which he is employed. If he can do doctoral research alongwith his job, there will be compromise either in his job or in his studies, both of which are not good at all. This has reference to views of K Rajasekharan regarding not to allow working librarians to do part time research for obtaining PhD. As K Rajasekharan suggested that interested people can do research without any registration and publish their findings in research journals, without affecting their job. So I would like to know: 1 Whether doing research for publishing papers without registration would not affect their job. 2 How many research papers shall be sufficient to considered research work equal to Ph.D.? 3 How many fellows in India have been considered equal to Ph.D. at the time of appointment or promotion on the basis of their research work/papers? 4 How does the job of teachers not affect when they do part times Ph.D. Ph.D. for librarians is needed for the following reasons: 1 If an Assistant Librarian has eleven year experience and having PhD will be promoted to Dy. Librarian through Career Advancement Scheme of UGC. 2 Recently Indian Academic Library Association has submitted a concept paper to Chadda Committed to consider Librarians (AL/DL/Librarians) at par with teachers. Use of the phrase "knowledge of computer"

Dear Colleagues This is an anecdote. Back in 2006, I was writing quite a lot of statements of purpose and application letters as part of the application process for admission to PhD. Then I collected all those documents in a single place and went to my teacher in Calcutta University to get his recommendation letters. He smiled and told me that instead of writing 'knowledge of computer', the phrase should be written as 'knowledge of computing'. I realized my mistake and corrected it. Since then I have never used the phrase "knowledge of computer", instead put the phrase of knowledge of computing. When I see the phrase knowledge of computing, it reminds me of his smile immediately. So, when today I saw the phrase quite frequently I searched for the connotations of the words 'computer' and 'computing'. The definitions given in wikipedia are: Computer: A computer is a machine that manipulates data according to a list of instructions. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Computer) Computing: /"In a general way, we can define computing to mean any goal-oriented activity requiring, benefiting from, or creating computers. Thus, computing includes designing and building hardware and software systems for a wide range of purposes; processing, structuring, and managing various kinds of information; doing scientific studies using computers; making computer systems behave intelligently; creating and using communications and entertainment media; finding and gathering information relevant to any particular purpose, and so on. However, it is sad that the University of Kerala by its order No.Ac.E1.B/2007 dated 5/10/2007 restricted the opportunity for Part Time PhD registration only for the Teachers.Till then, there were opportunites for registration, and all on a sudden the University took such a drastic step.As a result of this, the working people have to either take leave for doing PhD (Full time Research) or not doing PhD at all. Let me add my own 2 cents on this issue (and put myself in the line of fire :-) ---- Perhaps you have heard the adage, "All publicity is good publicity " and " no publicity is bad publicity." Obviously this statement goes along with the premise that even negative publicity mentions 'you', so it can only add to your overall popularity. This aside - we should have and show a 'sense of humour' and show our maturity by taking it in our stride. I feel that we need NOT be defensive and get into protests etc. I would think protest is a sign of insecurity. Is our profession so weak that we need to 'defend' through protests? If a certain image is portrayed, and we are not comfortable with that image - then let us do something to change it positively, rather than protesting. Dear All, I understand the pain behind seeing our own image being wrongly portrayed/represented or damaged by some one. Let us take it bit lighter and laugh for a while on being "Librarywalas" as shown in the add,it is really cute. First of all we need to develop tolerance and understand why we are wrongly portrayed/criticised/mocked at. Criticism or some one telling something about us should help to introspect our self and check whether the criticism/comments are valid, if they are valid then we need to change our self. If it is not valid then forget it, as it shows the level of the person who made that comment/showed something wrongly. But at the same time I feel this is the high time to do reality check. Let us recall our own experiences with Library/Library staffs in different environment (Academic library /Public library/Special) the way they behaved with us when we had been to them as user? how user friendly they were? In what way they supported users in finding the information on net/journal or book on self ? The user who passes through such experience may develop a kind of unfriendly attitude towards library/library professionals and when get a chance they show such things or express them. At the same time I am not generalizing it, as generation by generation Library professionals are changing themselves and becoming more customer/user focused , dynamic and developing multiple skills which are required for the survival of self and Profession. I also accept some of our friends suggestion on protesting but today is monster.com and tomorrow someone else will give one more add and with how many people you will protest? Can this protest changes the thinking of the people or our image in the society? But one thing can change our image in the society that is "changing ourselves" and becoming more dynamic, customer focused, user-friendly and more knowledgeable persons. Friends let us together move towards building right image in the eyes of users by: 1. Having self esteem. 2. Loving our profession( be comfortable with being a librarian). 3. Learning one new skill every quarter (once in three months). 4. Forming associations at local levels and sharing our experiences & knowledge with fellow professionals & linking these local associations with state & National Level associations. 5. Creating our visibility in the organization where we work. 6. Along with library activity let us involve in Knowledge Management initiatives, Open Access initiatives, education fair, book fair etc. 7. Learning more about e-resources & sharing such knowledge with fellow professionals. 8. Publish some newsletters relevant to your parent organization (electronic/Print-newsletters). 9. Do user surveys to check what user community feel about your services & about librarian. 10.Impress/influence on the mind of your organizational Heads about importance of information and how you can support them with the required information. 11.Learn more about customer relationship as we all learned a lot about technical aspects of library but forgot the user. To, All Professional Colleagues, When I saw the advertisement of Monster on television, I find it extremely disturbing that a reputed job provider can do such nasty advertisement that to the highly regarded profession of LIBRARIANSHIP. They should chastise for this indecent act. Now days the information is so massive and Librarians are the people who manages it respective to diversified working sectors. Before showing the image of Librarian yawning and sleeping, they should have done survey and some research in highly reputed companies, organizations, Institutions and other various sectors to see how the librarians have to be on their toes to provide the right information at the right time from the gigantic information available, which helps the user fraternity to come out with excellent results to facilitate the profits and growth not only for the parent organization but also for individuals. In my opinion, a strong action is needed against such people. I would like to request, ILA, BOSLA and other Associations should take necessary action against Monster. And Most Importantly, Monster itself advertises for Librarians so please do a thorough check monster. Respected Friends, Its very good sign, that we all aware of this fact that some one has abused our profession, and like a true professional we have been duly condemning him. Every one has a long list of suggestion starting with so many *SHOULDs *, but the million dollar question is that who is going to kill the cat. Does this is not our responsibility to come forward, and take a strong and practical action against this humiliating act? We all know that to whom we should contact for necessary action, then, *what are we waiting for*? We have innumerable Library Associations who can do commendable job in this regard and can make a strong pressure to demoralize these activities. *Why not they are taking any initiative?* ** I sincerely request to my worthy colleagues, instead of verbal protest, we have to take some concrete and rock-hard action, so that no one can take as lightly in any manner. Whether above the canteen or centrally located in a separate building considering points mentioned in the standard IS:1553? I am thankful to all my professional colleagues and greatful to everybody who have responded. I am also greatful to Dr. S.R. RANGANATHAN who has given us Indian Standards on different fields in library science. My management has taken care of the safety of Library & Information Centre which they wanted to build above the canteen as erlier decided. Now they are shifting the canteen from the existing place.
