Over the past few years, our NSF-funded project has developed a number of specific lesson plans/modules that can be incorporated into courses that address digital libraries. Faculty at UNC and Virginia Tech, as well as members of the project's advisory board and others, have participated in the development of these modules. If you are teaching a course on digital libraries or could use this content in a related course, we hope that you will assist in the field testing of one or more of these modules. i-QUIZ 2008 - The Grand Finale

Congratulations to the winners and the runners up! The Garfield Team of Vijaianand and Manas Samanta walked away with the beautiful iQuiz trophy and the big bonanza of cash prizes. The runners up were the Dewey team of Ramesh Yernagula and Chandana Patra. The days of anticipation and waiting were over on December 11, 2008 as the curtains came down on the iQuiz 2008 - keenly awaited event - organized by Informatics and IASLIC on the occasion of the 23rd National Seminar of IASLIC 2008 at Bose Institute. ISiM (International School of Information Management), University of Mysore was our quiz partner and OCLC was the sponsor. The grand finale was a cliff hanger - with the Garfield Team and the Dewey Team racing neck to neck till the end. The top six scorers of the Online Round held on November 28th were teamed up into Ranganathan Team, Dewey Team and Garfield team and invited to the final round of the stage quiz. However due to unavoidable circumstances, Shion Guha of Indian Statistical Institute, Bangalore did not show up and hence based on an impromptu quiz one of audience Ms. Chadana Patra was selected to replace Guha for the final round. There was palpable tension and anticipation in the air, with both the contestants and the audience sitting literarily at the seat edges. The iQuiz trophy along with the cash prize of Rs. 10,000 for the winning team and Rs. 5000 for the runners up and other prizes and goodies added to the excitement and the passions of everyone. IASLIC also announced a cash prize of rs.1000 for the winning team. So he is the Teacher of Teacher. But unfotunately he is not given the importance as the faculties are given.so for the status of librarians are concerned he or she needs to improve overall performance by working hard to optimum level . so that he wil be given status. However, to get the status there is a need to have some sort of representation in BoS,Senate in university. so that librarians will be able to place their problem on such a platform. this wiil help in improving libraries,services then automaticaly the status of librarians. This type of discussion is going on in maharashtra is a welcome step. He/she is also engage in developing reading habits and achieve information literacy among the students by doing this they actually stimulate the learning process. ** * * *4) **Library profession should have the separate faculty like other professions e.g. Law, Management, Medicine etc.* * * Library and information science is a profession and it should be treated as a separate profession. What they have learnt during their course period - they are unable to utilize the same in their institution. For example how many candidates know to use DDC/Colon effectively and have a proper classification system in the Library. How many of us are good at giving proper user education??? There are many more such issues which cannot be discussed. If you notice many of them (I should not be calling them professionals) use either the Library of Congress Catalogue or British Library Integrated Catalogue to classify the books, which in my opinion - using these for classification of Indian books is misleading and inappropriate for arrangement of books in a library. My dear friend, Classification and Cataloguing is the essence of LIS and if you take them out anybody can be a Librarian. Communication is one aspect which needs to be thoroughly improved. Communication can be improved through regular reading and interacting with the users and not through starting a movement. Here, again, the individual has to take the initiative. I have also come across good Librarians and they are well placed in Asst. Professors grade. To be frank with you, they are really good in their work, in their ideology and have contributed towards the growth of the institution. Some of the Library Assistants are also well placed. There is a saying "First Deserve and then Desire". 'Deserve' is not only qualification but other aspects in an individual. I am of the opinion that with 2-3 years of work experience in a library will easily get him a lecturer's scale. My dear Vivek if you notice, the Library Assistant's are paid in the grade of Rs.5500/-. The fact is that some Institutes take Library Assistant and call them Librarians and thus the Library Assistant feels that they are in Lecturer's grade. The Librarians are not teaching and the ones who teach obviously get a lecturer's/asst professors grade. Imagine the rigorous process which a Library lecturer has to undergo for a job in an institute. As a part of the interview process they have to teach a class in front of the higher authorities and then judged by students and faculty. Does this happen with non-teaching Librarian??? If you notice all Post Graduates are not Lecturers, they opt for different options and those who opt for lecturers/Asst Professor know the art of teaching. An institution cannot survive by taking lectures who do not know how to teach and those who know how to teach are paid the Lecturers/Asst Professors grade. Accreditation of LIS Education

Dear Friends, I do agree with Smita, Parinita,Vijay Gautam, K Desale, Prof. Mangla and others who have expressed concern over the present state of LIS education in our country. In this connection, I Iike to say that India today has more than 100 LIS schools at the university level alone churning out at least 5000 LIS degree holders — 4500 bachelor degree holders and 500 master degree holders — even at a modest estimate, which is several times more than the available job opportunities in Indian market and possibly highest production in the world. All these have brought into focus the question of continued relevance and adequacy of the present programme of LIS education. The present scene in LIS education in India gives dismal condition and reflects a very disappointing scene. To achieve academic excellence, it is of utmost importance that standards and norms for LIS education should be set by an external agency and thereafter adherence to them be made mandatory. The immediate task is to establish a mechanism for accreditation of LIS courses offered by different library schools in India. It is a high time that the Government of India should pass an Act for LIS education on the analogy of Indian Medical Council Act, BAR Council of India Act and All India Council of Technical Education Act which would help in standardization of LIS education in India. The proposed Act should make provision for establishing a Library and Information Science (LIS) Council of India (or in any other name) and it should function as a central agency to provide guidelines and standards in LIS education and practices. I think all library professionals should come forward to raise their voice in favour of accreditation of LIS education to overcome its present crisis. Dr. J. K. New Nomenclature for Librarians

New Nomenclature for Librarians Most of the Librarians do not want to identify themselves as Librarians. The UGC Pay Review Committee has given new nomenclature for various teaching posts (Assistant Professor for Lecturer). Similarly Librarian posts should also be redesignated as Manager/Director/Professor in Colleges and Universities recognized by University Grants Commission. The core responsibilities for librarians are administrative in nature. Their jobs often involve overall management, administration and coordination of all phases of day-to-day operations, collection development, policy formulation and programs development, etc. Most of the librarians are providing training and orientation for library users and new staff members. In general, the Librarianship sees itself is lacking in reward and respect but the nature of duties are compared with a high status profession. One of the important measures that can be taken to improve the status of Librarians is to redesignate them as Manager/Director/Professor. Accreditation of LIS Education

Dear Sir, Many thanks for your mail. I appreciate your thoughts and am of the opinion that the syllabus will make a huge difference in solving the recent problems. A strict course curriculum and evaluation will make a candidate to think which profession he/she wants to join. I have the following suggestions to make: The 12 month BLIS/MLIS course should be spread over for a period 16 months with 4 months of compulsory internship in a reputed Library. Theme-oriented assignments/project should be introduced as soon as possible. More emphasis should be given on Computer courses - Online Resources, how to create and maintain a website but not on what is 'CPU' and what is 'mouse'? The LIS correspondence courses should have a minimum 5 – 6 months compulsory class on weekends failing which student will not be able to write the examination. The correspondence course should also have theme oriented project/assignments as part of their course structure. The 2 year and 5 year MLIS programes will help in developing standard of LIS education in India. Why not have 5 year BA. LIS or BSc. LIS etc etc... equivalent to Bachelors Degree (*in 5 year law prog. it is BA LLB or BSc LLB and after that LLM*). This will help to standardize the education in LIS and have specific course structure. This will also help an individual to specialize in one subject area. Sir, *department-wise*, the Library is the only department where you have more no. of people. If you look at other departments, be it teaching or non-teaching, the no. of staff is less. Yet LIS professionals are facing difficulties in getting jobs. A slight improvement in the pattern of LIS syllabus will help a lot. Dear All, Department of Library & Information Science, BHU & Indian Council of Social Science Research (ICSSR), New Delhi are jointly going to organise *National Seminar On Open Source Library Solutions (OSLS)* on 16th - 17th January, 2009. *About Seminar:* The rising cost of technology has compelled the libraries to use Open Source Software (OSS) for library automation, digital library and so on. OSSs are developed in public domain by the technology experts for the libraries. The professional community implements the software solutions and renders feedback to developers, which is a real time testing of software. The OSS products are provided with source code for implementation level customization and future development of software. These solutions are often free for use and could be redistributed. Today, there are OSSs available for different library activities which are better than the commercial solutions using cutting age technology. These solutions range from Operating System to specialized institutional repositories. This has made the library services more cost effective and least dependent on commercial software and vendors. However, there is a concern of the professionals over stability of software implementation and continuing support to these OSSs. There is an equal and opposite concern from the end of developers also towards having a sustainable funding for running the software development projects. Whatever the concerns may be, the increased use of open source software among the library community is very encouraging for open source solution developers. The Department of Library and Information Science, Banaras Hindu University, Varanasi proposes to conduct two days National Convention on Open Source Library Solutions (OSLS), 16th – 17th January, 2009. The proposed seminar would provide a common platform for library professionals to share their experience. The academic and administrative profile of the man who is going to head, lead and manage the affairs of the University of Mysore for the next four years is proof enough to indicate what the new Vice-Chancellor is capable of. Humility and down to earth temperament endowed with practical wisdom are the hallmarks of the personality of the new Vice-Chancellor. All those who know him personally would agree with one voice that it is indeed a great gesture that a man of simplicity and self-effacement committed to quality-oriented higher education has been elevated to the post of a Vice-Chancellor of a prestigious University struggling at the moment to keep up its reputation. He has an uphill task in setting right certain irregularities committed in the recent past. Harnessing pulls and pressures of different sorts would be one of the real challenges awaiting him as he takes up his new assignment. Looking for and having right people as part of his team management could go a long and effective way in meeting the challenges ahead of him. Having been an insider for many years could be a great aid. A man with a heart of wisdom derived from vast and wide experience as teacher and administrator, Prof.Talwar, known as VGT in the shortened version of his name, is a well-known name in the academic and administrative circle within and outside the University of Mysore. There is no department that he is not familiar with. He is aware of the ins and outs of almost all the Sections at Crawford Hall by virtue of having served as Registrar of the University for four years and four months and being a Chairman or a member of one committee or the other till date. Prof.Talwar is also known for his outreaching sensitivity. His friendly and helpful nature could be a great source of strength and problems as well. A fine sense of a compassionate worldview, thanks to his humble origin and family background, pervades his reasoning and discernments. Free from coterie culture, kitchen cabinet, and mean and mud-slinging politicking, he has the art of cultivating the spirit of accommodativeness lest ego clashes and ghetto interests and conflicts should overpower the management of academic and administrative matters of the University. Library Movement

Dear friends, I too agree with S K DEsale and P B mangla. We cannot keep on giving endless services and in return expect nothing. The working conditions of the librarians and their status is very poor in our country. Even after earning a post graduation in LIS, many of the librarians are taken on a beginner's scale. As we say for better services a user has to pay. The same thing applies when it comes to salary and working conditions. If you are paid well, you serve better. What Ms. Smita Chandra says is correct and I think these are the very basic things which most of the librarians do. We should also understand that librarians have to depend on the parent organization and libraries come last when budget is to be allocated and comes first when services are to be given. So I would say that IT progresses, ordered and neater libraries can be expected when there are no budget problems and min. man power is a must. And the important facor is the LIS education There are exceptions where librarians don't work inspite of having good budgets etc. I would like to throw some light on out LIS Education too and that is where what Smita and Parinita says holds true. In earlier times there were very few universities/colleges offering Lib. degrees. Now so many universities and colleges are offering these degrees. But how many have a standard? I have come across several applications for a higher post where so many candidtes have M.LIb degree with distinction but their basic graduation scores are just 35-40%. They cannot communicate, organize collection, knowledge of subject is zero and the very basic lib. functions are so badly handled that I doubt their Lib. degrees and Phds. On top of all this they have papers( highly sub-standard) published and presented at various conferences and seminars. These are the people who are spoiling our profession and thereby our professional status. The Universities/colleges imparting LIS degrees should set a proper standard and modify eligibility criteria for admissions to Blib/Mlib/PhD. All this together can form the basis of Lib. movement.
