"Training Attachments Asia and Oceania" The four-week Training Attachments are designed to afford an opportunity to middle level library and information workers from developing countries who wish to gain experience and hands-on exposure from more advanced environments. The areas identified for such training are library management, information technology, preservation, rural librarianship and literacy work. The candidates must be less than 40 years old. Dear Sir/Madam, In response to recent discussion thread: Who is responsible (dated 29th Sept 2009) I wanted to share my thoughts in this regard. The decline of LIS profession is not because of associations or curriculum, but it is because of information and its wide spread availability in different form through contemporary technologies. >From time immemorial libraries were the major source of information. But ever since WWW became public, it has radically altered the dynamics of information dissemination. Google, Amazon (if you have Kindle reading device, certainly you will not visit library), Microsoft, and Yahoo time and again came up with new information delivery products (Google Scholar, Windows live and many more). These tools were very easy to use then some of the traditional information retrieval tools. This aspects gives them an advantage to become very famous. Initially librarians have thought that Google, Amazon, and other similar companies would not come into the way of libraries. But it was the other way around. PEW Internet and American Life Project surveys, OCLC College Students Perceptions of Libraries and Information Resource survey and Taiga reports all have shown that today's information users are no more think that library is the primary source of information. They are very much relied on Google or other similar products. There were efforts to design library OPACs interface to look like that of Google search interface just to keep information users away from Google. But all these efforts have failed to give positive results. Google has gone further ahead from digitization to publishing books online. The mission statements of Google, ALA and Australian Library and Information Association have closely complemented with each other. Google mission is to organize the world information and make it useful. The mission statement of the American Library Association (ALA) includes the aim of ensuring "access to information for all". Similarly, objectives of the Australian library and Information Association relate to information provision and include promoting "the free flow of information and ideas". (The above verbatim(mission statements) is taken from Waller recent study on "The relationship between public libraries and Google: Too much information" which is appeared in the recent issue of First Monday) This clearly depicts Google's mission to organize and disseminate world information which is similar to that of ALA and Australian Library and Information Association goals. Somewhere this echo as a replace for libraries. All this happenings were closely watched by LIS professionals and organizations around the world and have shown keen interest to refine the identity of LIS profession. This interest has given birth to I-schools (information schools)in US and Canada initially and later in other parts of the world( International School of Information Management-ISiM is an example for that in India). One of the reason to start I-schools is the explosive growth of digital information(http://www.ischools.org). I-schools have engaging in social informatics, data mining, Sociology of Science, Linguistics, discourse analysis, media studies, spatial information, natural language processing, cyberinfrastructre, philosophy of science, information visualization, political economics of information etc. Students of varied background ranging from literature to hard core software professionals are joining I-schools. Interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary nature of research is emerging from this. It is time for us to think in this direction. Google has come up with another new venture of publishing books online. This has already triggered lot of interest and apprehension among authors, publishers, vendors and libraries. If Google succeeds in this deal, it will have a bigger impact on book industry and libraries. Will stop this long write up with Bob Dylan song .... Sir Dorabji Tata Memorial Library, Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai has organised a five day workshop on "Design and Development of Digital Libraries Using Open Source Software" in association with SAARC Documentation Centre, New Delhi from 14-18 December, 2009 at TISS Main Campus. Workshop Content: During the workshop participants will learn how to: create State-of-Art digital libraries using the Open Source Software, which include software installation, configuration, customization, digitization and other related workflow operations, content development and management, designing and creating standard metadata sets to describe digital objects and encoding it in standard markup formats. At the end of the training, participants will be able to create electronic publications with search and full text retrieval facility, and launch digital libraries/archives of full text, image, audio and video files accessible over the web. Objectives: 1. Today every organization needs to develop its own Digital Institutional Repository. The LIS professionals need training to develop these repositories. This workshop is organized to make them competent in using the software. 2. To familiarize participants with the concepts of digital library and usage of Open Source Software. 3. To offer hands on experience to develop digital libraries and use of Open Source Software like DSpace, GSDL, EPRINTS etc. 4. To offer hands on experience to install Linux OS and configuration, customization, backup/restore of Open Source Software. 5. Fighting against copyright regulations ‘Right to Read’ campaign launched *To highlight the issues faced by persons with print disability – those deprived of Indian books due to unfriendly copyright regulations – a group of organisations launched the Right To Read (R2R) campaign on September 26.* The campaign, jointly launched by the Bangalore-based Centre for Internet and Society (CIS), Daisy Forum of India (DFI), bookbole.com and Inclusive Planet, kickstarted at Loyola College in Chennai on Saturday. “This campaign was part of the World Blind Union’s (WBU) global campaign,” said Nirmita Narasimhan, Programme Manager, CIS. “We are asking all the organisations to lend their support to our initiative.” The campaign comes at a time when the Indian government is preparing to consider changes to the copyright law, which it failed to implement two years ago after disability rights campaigners objected to the proposal to make books and other print materials be made in an “exclusive” format. Nirmita said that this would also be an occasion for activists to urge Government of India to throw its weight behind a WBU treaty tabled at the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO) asking for a global copyright regulation that takes into account the needs of persons with print disabilities. “The treaty is coming up for discussion at Geneva (WIPO's head quarters) in December,” Nirmita said and added: “Right now only three Latin American nations are supporting it. Since India has the largest number of persons with print disability, which includes the visually challenged, persons with autism and children with learning difficulties, our support would likely tilt the balance in favour of the treaty.” Now, the campaign will be gradually taken to other parts of the country, said Rahul Cherian from Inclusive Planet. A signature campaign and distribution of a declaration supporting accommodation of persons with print disability in copyright laws will also be held as part of the campaign. The publications brought by UNO and its other agencies like, UNESCO, WHO etc. are easily available in the market or at any other library because of their special nature, the establishment of Depository of UNO Publications in reputed libraries was brought into practice. So, these Centers are now able to fulfill the requirements of Researchers and others who are in need of them and it is also responsibility of each Depository Centre to work towards this end. However, it is found that these publications are not able to reach the users in a desired level of expectations and few studies on their in-depth information contents exist, and also ! as to their availability and use of these Publications from the Depository Libraries. An attempt is therefore made in this research study to examine the various issues related to the UNO and its other publications available through the Depository Libraries. Hence the study of UNO Publications Depository Libraries located in South India is undertaken for an in-depth and detailed study. The aim of the study is to find out how the UN depository resources reach to the end user and various effective mechanisms created for their optimum utilization with the available information technology facilities in particular in selected designated libraries. International School of Information Management University of Mysore, Mysore ISiM - Special Lecture Series (9) 23rd September 2009 "Changing Paradigms of Digital Marketing & Multichannel Commerce" by Mr. Ajay Malgaonkar A special lecture was organized at the International School of Information Management (ISiM), University of Mysore, Mysore on Wednesday, the 23rd of September 2009 at 10 AM. The special lecture was delivered by Mr. Ajay Malgaonkar, Group Project Manager, Infosys Technologies Limited on the topic of "Changing Paradigms of Digital Marketing & Multichannel Commerce". Special lectures are organized in ISiM with the intention of providing students an insight into cutting edge trends in the field of Information Management and also an opportunity to interact with distinguished guests. The event started with Prof.Shalini Urs, Executive Director, ISiM welcoming the speaker and the audience. She introduced the speaker to the audience and set the environment for an exciting discussion. Mr. Ajay Malgaonkar began his lecture explaining the concept of Digital Marketing and the need for it in the contemporary world. Digital Marketing, he explained is the practice of promoting products and services using digital distribution channels to reach consumers in a timely, relevant, personal and cost-effective manner. He provided examples to show how the traditional methods of marketing and reaching out to people have become redundant. He then spent some time explaining how these tools could be leveraged to build a relationship between producers and consumers, Create Brand Awareness, build brand equity and capture the public opinion. This practice predominantly uses the new age tools like Internet, mobile and other interactive channels for reaching out to the masses. On the other hand, Multi channel commerce refers to the practice of pursuing multiple means to promote or doing business. The two techniques go hand-in hand in the modern day business scenarios. It today's business scenario, it is noteworthy that all popular brands are actively employing the techniques of Digital Marketing and Multi channel communications for a better visibility and market position. He also explained how the videos, emails, websites, SMS'es, Podcasts, Banners and blogs can be used in tandem to create awareness and branding of any product. He emphasized on the current trends in customers' decision making being deeply influenced by the opinions of their peers. In such scenarios, it becomes important for the companies/brands to monitor the blogs and other social networking platforms over the internet to assess their market positioning and sentiments. Ajay's point of view about marketing was that, "Instead of TELLING A STORY, Create the TOOLS that allow a story to be told". He is of the opinion that acquisition of a customer online consists of following 6 stages namely - Discovery of the product by the consumer, Evaluation by the Consumer, Engage the customer, Interaction among various consumers, Convert the consumers interest and Advocate the consumers- The speaker then took up a case study regarding the usage of digital marketing during the 2008 US presidential elections. Dr Urs, the Chief Librarian of th euniversity, who established the HELINET by roping in medical colleges in the university to proivde the subscription of journals and books as well as information to these colleges. he started five user education programs to the doctors, librarians and medical students on wht are the resources available and how to make use of them.. on first day, the program was for medical subject and more 80 participated in the program, they were attentively attending the program. I FEEL ALL THE PROFESSIONALS SHOULD APPRECIATE THE ATTEMPTS OF Dr URS IN ORGANISING THESE FREE USER EDUCATION PROGRAMS TO ENLIGHTEN THE USERS AND ALSO TO MAKE OPTIMUM USE OF THE RESOURCES. With a view to promoting further work on and practical applications of the software a survey of the institutions and individuals in South Asian region who are using or intending to use or have attended workshop(s) on the software or otherwise interested in GSDL, is being undertaken. *Announcement of National Workshop on workshop on Web Accessibility* *The Centre for Internet and Society <http://www.cis-india.org/>* (CIS) and *Society for Promotion of Alternative Computing and Employment<http://www.space-kerala.org/> * (SPACE) are organizing a workshop on web accessibility for web developers from the public and private sector from September 25 to 26, 2009. The workshop will take place at *Christ Nagar International School*, Kowdiar, Thiruvananthapuram, between 09:30-17:30 hours each day. The workshop seeks to bring together practitioners from Government Departments, as well as from small and medium enterprises across the country. The primary aim of this workshop is to demonstrate the importance of creating accessible web sites and to educate the developers of government and private web sites on how to incorporate accessibility features into new as well as existing web sites. The training comprises both theory-oriented and practical sessions.The trainers are specialists in various aspects of web accessibility. The main focus will be on WCAG 2.0 guidelines. The workshop is for persons already involved in developing web sites with good knowledge of HTML, XML, CSS, etc. In addition to training web developers in accessibility, the workshop will also serve as a platform for capacity building by training potential accessibility trainers.
