ABOUT THE WORKSHOP: Intellectual Property Rights have become crucial for knowledge economy workers with laws getting stricter on unauthorized use of published material and stringent on piracy in software. In India, patent laws and copyright laws have been amended to make them compatible to the TRIPS agreement under the WTO. What are the new issues in copyright and patents that today's knowledge managers must be aware of? How do these laws protect intellectual development and catalyze the knowledge economy? Hi Ramya, Pl. go through following link to download the software. http://bvsmodelo.bvsalud.org/php/level.php?lang=en&component=27&item=13 Its easy to install the software you need to copy the folder dowloaded in C drive of your system and then start it. If you know littlebit about ISIS software then it will be very easy to use. If not then also not very difficult as its menu driven. You can create your own new database or it has standard Databases like MARC 21 from which you can create blank new database for your library too. Also you can create your library portal very easily. Search facility is excellent. Just go through the manual and start practicing. You will find it a very good and flexibile software. OSS Lab's Koha workshop report

Dear Friends, I would like to give you a brief overview of Koha workshop organized by Nucsoft OSS Labs on October 8, 9 and 10 in Bangalore. In my experience this workshop content designed in a different perspective. An extensive hand on training for small group (12 candidates) is the main attraction of this workshop. This workshop is suitable to acquire the knowledge in Koha installation and maintenance, especially for librarians going to handle system administration alone. Documentation of the workshop contains simplified (step-by-step) work procedures. Following are the details of workshop. Workshop High Lights: Three days workshop concentrated on only system side aspects of Koha; installation, trouble shooting, maintenance, crontab setting, data migration etc. Topics covered: Multi lingual cataloguing, Pazpar federated search engine, Zebra indexing engine, SIP-NCIP, Customization (look and feel) of online catalogue interface and Google Indic transliteration tool etc. Usability of workshop lessons in a library environment: Installation and maintenance of Zebra indexing engine Zebra indexing engine enhance searching capability of Koha online catalogue. It supports Boolean search expressions and relevance-ranked free-text queries. SIP-NCIP This plug-in makes Koha ready to adopt RFID technology. Pazpar Pazpar is a high performance federated searching engine tool. It will search a lot of targets (electronic databases) in parallel and provide on-the-fly integration of the results. This tool is very helpful to search in distributed electronic information resources. Customization Customization of online catalogue includes placing library logo, changing border designs, adding a side navigational menu and filling main space block. This session provided tips and tricks to beautify online catalogue interface. Trouble shooting lessons Trouble shooting lessons from Koha workshop will be helpful to solve system inconsistencies like performance problems, rebuilding indexes, bug fixing, zebra search problems, web and database server un availability. my only question to all those who are so concerned about the down trend in LIS education is - what is it that they have done to their institutions as alumni after completing their degrees to improve the quality. Have they spent any time with younger generation in their departments to share their experiences and have they contributed to the improvement in infrastructure in any respect? National Commission on libraries to be set up Surbhi Bhatia, Times of India 12 October 2009 In order to reform the Libraries and Information Services (LIS) sector in India, the government has decided to set up an autonomous National Commission on Libraries. The decision comes after recommendations made by the National Knowledge Commission (NKC). “The NKC had recognised public libraries as an important element of the foundation of a knowledge economy. Hence, we recommended to the government to set up a commission and it has agreed,” said Sam Pitroda, chairman, NKC. “The commission would be set up as a statutory body to address information and learning needs of the citizens of India,” he informed. He said the commission would also oversee the functioning of public and private libraries in India. A national census of all libraries would also be prepared by undertaking a nation-wide survey to know how many public and private libraries exist in India. Collection of census data on libraries would provide baseline data for planning, Pitroda informed at a four-day international conference organised by Delhi University on academic libraries. The NKC recommended that the commission must assess the manpower requirements of the country in the area of LIS management, and take necessary steps to meet the country’s requirement through LIS education and training. “For establishing a well-equipped institute for advanced training and research in library and information science, the government should also set up an Indian Institute of Library and Information Science,” he added. “DU has spent 2.2 crores on subscription of electronic resources. At present, Delhi University Library System (DULS) has access to 30 databases of the world under which students can access around 3,000 journals. And around 25,000 online resources in the form of monographs, conference, proceedings and audio-visual material,” said S Majumdar, university librarian and head of DULS. Dear Divya, ABCD is very good library Automation cum digital library FOSS Free open source software available.It is most recent and covers almost all the needs of librarians and documentalists. I am lucky one who got chance to attend the first workshop and training programme of this software in STIMULATE 8 Program in Nov-Dec 2008 at Vrije Univeristy, Brussels and learn the software from Dr. Prof. Egbert De Smet who is Supervisor of whole ABCD project. It is becoming very popular in USA,UK and African countries. Many well known libraries have converted their database in this software and started using it.As it is new many workshops and training programmes are going on in various countries. ABCD is basically from the ISIS family of UNESCO. It is full-fledged application of integrated library management system. Orignial development of it is centrally managed by Bireme and its own programmers, as the project is supported by Flemish Interuniversity Council (VLIR. ABCD aims at providing an integrated library management tool covering all main functions in a library, i.e. bibliographic database management, users management, loans management, end-user searching on local and external bibliographic databases and library portal. Dear all, With regret, I inform the members of LIS community about the demise of Mr. M.P. Govidaraj(MPG), Retd. Chief Librarian of The Hindu on Sunday, 11th evening. Mr. MPG, a seasoned librarian, was very close to Dr. SR Ranganthan. Mr. MPG had served as Secretary, Local Library Authority (LLA) and he was one of the first to be deputed for training at Croydon Central Library at UK by the Govt. of TN. Mr. MPG has contributed extensively for The Hindu Index and a no. of compilations under "The Hindu Speaks" series. Also, he has to his credit a no. of papers at LIS conferences both in India and abroad. Mr. MPG was the Secretary of MALA during 70s. Ms. Selvi, one of his three daughters is serving at the Madras Univ. Library. May we pray the ALMIGHTY for his soul to rest in peace and provide strength to his family members to meet this loss. Dear all, The first International Conference on Academic Libraries (ICAL-2009) held at the University of Delhi from 5-8 October 2009. The conference was a historic event where eminent personalities in the field of Library and Information Science from around the world met and deliberated on many areas to create a road map for the future Academic Libraries in India. A pre-conference volume " Globalizing Academic Libraries: Vision 2020" was released by Dr. Sam Pitroda, Chairman, National Knowledge Commission at the inaugural ceremony on 5th October 2009.There were a number of 'gold speakers' and keynote addresses. Thee pre-conference tutorial was taken by Ms.Susan McGlamery on QuestionPoint (24/7 Reference services).The conference felicitated Ms.Ellen Ramona Tise, President IFLA. A panel discussion by the Delhi Vice Chancellors was also held which discussed various matters related to the academic libraries especially University and College Libraries. Paper and poster presentations by participants added value to the conference.The evenings were illuminated by cultural programmes.The less importance given to the School libraries was the only blind spot of the natable event. It was also declared that the next ICAL in 2011 will be held at the University of Hyderabad.The proceedings were well planned and executed. A seminar on future libraries and librarians at Ahmedabad Management Association (AMA) with participants from prominent academic institutions and business organizations shared their views about the existing system of libraries and what the future holds for them. Satish Deshpande, former head of British Council Library, said that the concept of a knowledge centre has undergone a paradigm shift. "When we think of library, we see an image of a dull place with an uninterested librarian and graveyard peace. However, the new-age resources do not depend on printed books only. Internet has become the biggest knowledge store house," he said. The educational institutes are feeling the heat. Dr TS Kumbhar, librarian at DA-IICT told TOI that the percentage of the subscription of the books by students has fallen drastically over the years. "We, as knowledge professionals, have an important role to play in guiding students to the right resources. We are already working on the concept of a virtual library," he said. Anil Kumar, librarian at IIM-Ahmedabad, told TOI that the automation of the library does not automatically convert into efficiency. "A library's role also includes documentation of the knowledge gathered by an institute and make it available to the others. Srikanth, IAS Secretary, Department of Education (Higher education) Govt. of Karnataka Presided by Prof. V.G. Talawar Vice Chancellor, University of Mysore The event started of with Prof. Shalini. R. Urs, Executive director, International School of Information Management (ISiM) welcoming the dignitaries on the dais and introducing them to the gathering. Mr. M.N. Vidyashankar, began his talk by stating that eGovernance is more about Governance and less about 'e' and that the citizen is in the center stage in any eGovernance initiative. He also pointed out that "e-Governance is an added dimension of comfort that Government is committed to offer to the citizens". In his talk that lasted for about an hour, he introduced the audience to some of the important initiatives of the government including Bhoomi, Kaveri, Khajane, Bangalore One, Nemmadi, E-Procurement, Human Resource Management System and Karnataka State Wide Area Network among others. He stressed the relevance of each of these initiatives and the challenges that were encountered in their way of successful implementation. He also spoke passionately about the "Bangalore One" initiative going mobile and also the additional features that would be incorporated into this popular initiative. He also revealed that initiatives like "Bangalore One" would be extended to other districts of Karnataka. Speaking of efficiency within the implementation of eGovernance, he pointed out that "Human Resource Management System (HRMS)" project, after having failed in its implementation with three other states in India, was successfully rolled out in Karnataka. He also highlighted that Karnataka is the only state in the country to implement total HRMS, using which salaries of 5 lakh employees of the state are being processed by 25,000 drawing and disbursing officers. As expected, the one topic that caught most of the interest was the Unique ID project. The speaker suggested that Karnataka was chosen for the pilot project based on its track record of effective implementations of eGovernance initiatives. He also suggested that the project guidelines may arrive at the end of October 2009. Speaking passionately about the project he revealed the fact that UID Authority was only entrusted with assigning a 'Unique Identification Number to each individual' and not any card. The lecture was followed by a very enthusiastic Question and Answer session. The audience expressed concerns about issuing an UID to all the people in the country, given the fact that we have still not being able issue the Election ID card to everyone. To this issue, Mr. Vidyashankar spilled the beans by pointing out that UIDA does not make it mandatory for all citizens to have an UID. Elaborating further, he pointed that the onus of getting a UID will rest with the individual. However, the government agencies, service sector and the corporate will make the UID mandatory to avail any of their facilities. It is by this means that the UIDA is hopeful of reaching out to all the existing citizens. However, after rolling out the UID project, the newborn's will be assigned an UID at birth. The speaker also said in a lighter vein, "Going forwards all children in India would be born with an UID". Addressing the security issues related to the UID project, he said that biometrics in the form of fingerprints(all 10 fingers) of the people would be collected and archived along with other details and maintained in a new database. Replying to a question about UID reporting to any agency, he said that UID shall under no circumstance share the data or any other information even to the government of India. The usage would strictly be restricted to the identification of the person's name with the UID. The speaker passionately spoke about the UID project as it is expected to touch the lives of the last person in the queue. The audience had many questions to ask about UID and other eGovernance initiatives but to the constraint of time few of them could not be addressed. In more recent times, the scenario of higher education has become complex. This is my view and observation only so you may also give your feed back about the truth i am also hungry to solve the problems of LIS professions. 1. LIS Curricula is not updated enough so that a student can have the latest and up-to-date knowledge of practical environment. Ans. 1 You are right it is not updated. 2. Do the learned faculties are not getting required time and proper infrastructures to keep update themselves? Ans. 2 If really faculties are not getting time then where they are busy? And why Problems occur in LIS? 3. Are the students now a days are interested only to getting a degree by using any of the means so that they can decorate their C.V.s Ans. 3. Students are like children’s they are only following the path of their elders. 4. Does the new entrants feared to take challenges and not capable to convert their theoretical knowledge in practical terms? Ans.4 You give the opportunity of top leadership positions to new entrants they will change the whole scenario of LIS with the blessings of good Intelligent/experienced professionals. 5. Does the govt is only interested only in framing the hard core policies and setting up certain working groups to evaluate the situation? Ans. 5. Evaluation of condition is very easy and govt. is doing it well but who will solve it this is the question. 6.
