Friends, Robert Kiley and Johan Rooryck of cOAlition S (which is behind Plan S) suggest that "research funders should simply require that the outputs of the research they fund are made openly available at the time of publication and published with an open licence (CC BY). This licence allows others to build on this research (subject to the norms of academic attribution) without having to seek permission or pay any licence fees." Even without a prod from funders, Indian researchers would do well to make their publications openly available, and stop publishing papers in journals charging APC. A constant endeavour is to integrate services and technologies that are essential for learning, research and creation of new knowledge. Yogendraji once said that one householder-yogi is worth a thousand sanyasis. In keeping with that sentiment, the library enables not only scholars to do their research in yoga but more importantly enables regular learners of yoga and the common man to keep in touch with the teachings of the founder of this Institute and expand their knowledge of yoga. *Summary of the Job Role:* Job entails to ensure efficient library operations and administration and to effectively maintain the library and its materials. It also involves providing professional research, reference and consultation services for the users. ABOUT THE CONCLAVE THEME In academic campuses around the world, libraries pioneered and provided leadership in the automation of functions and processes very early in the late 60s and 70s of the last century. But somewhere, the LIS community appears to have lagged behind in embracing machine learning (ML) in its knowledge organization and management functions. The ML bug is catching up now with LIS in a serious way with two recent reports, one by the Library of Congress (Machine Learning + Libraries: The Status of the Field, 2020) and another by OCLC (Responsible Operations: Data Science, Machine Learning, and AI in Libraries 2019). The industry serving the LIS community and its users is already thickly into the development of new tools based on ML and Deep Learning (DL) in areas like semantic search, voice-based search queries, recommender systems, automated classification & indexing, knowledge graph generation, new citation metrics models based on context-analysis, and so on. There are many examples of how AI can improve or even transform information discovery, and library management functions. * Reference Service in libraries is a prominent area that can undergo transformational changes with Alexa-like technologies applied to the digital collection of libraries. * In citation mapping, based on the actual content of papers, AI algorithms can create far better mapping systems of the actual research whereas the current mapping is largely limited to the network of researchers presented in the citation system. New citation metrics are emerging with the help of ML. Scite.AI, a new ML based citation database classifies every cited reference to identify whether a citing paper is supporting or disproving the cited paper which is done based on the analysis of the context of citation using Deep Learning techniques. * Plagiarism checking: Current models are based on similarity matching of text words. ML models can come up with more improved syntax and semantics based checking. Copying through the technique of paraphrasing are summarising can be detected by the emerging new ML based models. * Classification and indexing which are at the heart of precision and qualitative search and discovery can be accomplished at the full-text level. As is well known, the current Boolean based full-text search throws up too much of noise at the cost of relevance. Many developments are happening in the application of AI in Libraries. We will be presenting a position paper soon on AI in Libraries as a background note to the conference. N. V. Middle East Librarians Association Annual Conference 2022: Call for Papers The Conference: The MELA conference will be held in-person (in Denver) and online between November 29 and December 1st, between 9AM and 5PM EST. The full program will be available closer to the conference date. Information about the location for the in-person conference and the registration will be shared soon. Conference Theme: MELA 50th Anniversary: Learning from the Past and Looking Towards the Future Since 1972, when MELA was officially formed, the Middle East Librarians community has been working systematically to build its community, develop collections, preserve and enhance access to resources, and provide research and teaching support to users in the field. Through these 50 years, and even before, a lot of distinguished librarians paved the road through many ideas for projects and made achievements in MELA's history, which greatly impacted the present and will continue to shape MELA's future. In 1974, MELA members discussed the main top ideas for cooperative acquisitions and bibliographic control, then in 1979 and later, members looked at using new technologies for related projects and resources such as cataloging computerization and the Middle East Microform Project. In the second millennium, the MELA community utilized the new tools and technologies to preserve and enhance access to the Middle East resources through numerous web archiving, digital humanities, and open access projects. With social and political changes in the world and in the Middle East in particular, the MELA community worked together to secure access to resources in the area such as the Committee on Iraq, Endangered Archives, Archiving Arab Spring, and lately significant work done on the issues of social and racial justice and the impact of the pandemic. Through the last 50 years, MELA as an association has grown in various directions including a bigger and stronger community in all subfields of the Middle East librarianship, numerous projects, and affiliations and collaborations with other organizations and associations. The conference this year will reflect on MELA's accomplishments in the last 50 years, and look forward to ways to invest for the future. The Conference will be a chance for the MELA community to celebrate the history of the association, but also to discuss topics which should shape MELA's future. Byrappa, Librarian, JRD TATA Memorial Library, Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru, Karnataka, India. Dr Anand passed away Tuesday, 19 July 2022, around 10.45 PM. A valued member of the library team, he will be greatly missed. Please keep Anand’s family in your thoughts as they go through this difficult time.
