CWG 2010: Delhi Public Library to organize events for visitors New Delhi: Just four days left for the Commonwealth Games to start. The biggest public library in the country, Delhi Public Library (DPL) will be showcasing the heritage and culture of the national capital region to domestic as well as foreign visitors during the Commonwealth Games. The library is being spruced up for the Games and will manifest the development of Delhi as a centre of power and a vibrant city at cultural crossroads. >From October 1 to 11, the library will be engaged in different activities and conduct some of the events to spread awareness about the importance of books, their management and general knowledge. Some competitions, such as quiz and writing skills, will also be held in the library. Says Madhu Sudan Sharma, a visitor at the library, "This exhibition will provide a good opportunity to see the Delhi of the 1950s and 1960s. I am very excited and eagerly waiting for the event." "The library is a part of the history of Delhi that is why we are preparing for the event. So, people will come here and get to know the real history of the city," said Dr Anjana Chattopadhyay, director general, DPL. The library, located opposite the Old Delhi Railway Station, is a standing testimony to Delhi's growth as a metropolis in the last six decades. During the Games, the library will display rare archival material, audiovisual recordings and rare books from the library, apart from programmes such as the opening ceremony and prize distribution function. "To attract the visitors and people, the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee and Tourism Department will release advertisements during the Games," added Chattopadhyay. "We are also planning to put banners at all the library centres and Dilli Haat, so that people get to know about our events." The highlight of the event will be Newseum, a portion that will showcase a selection of newspapers, books, photographs and collection of pictures of historical importance. Visitors will get to see newspapers right from 1952 to 2010. The main attraction will be the rare gramophone records. More than 4,000 records and gramophone players, from old ones to the new digital ones will be shown to the people. "We are trying to highlight the role the library has played in providing people with information and making them aware about Indian culture, society, politics and other parts of life," said Chattopadhyay. Members of the library have been assured that the library would function as usual and books would be issued for reading. One front desk will be set up near the entrance. It will provide all the information and cataloguing facility to visitors who want to get first hand information related to the library. ICT Transforming Education: a Regional Guide By UNESCO's Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education This Regional Guide grew out of a series of meetings of ICT experts convened by UNESCO's Asia and Pacific Regional Bureau for Education to explore pedagogy-technology integration. An outcome of these meetings was the publication of Regional Guidelines on Teacher Development for Pedagogy-Technology Integration (Working Draft) in 2005 under the editorship of Shyamal Majumdar. At the end of 2009, the present author was contracted by the UNESCO Bangkok Office to revise and update these guidelines. However, it soon became apparent that there had been such advances in ICT in education in the intervening years that more than a revision was required. New models of e-learning had appeared and new Web 2.0 tools were influencing pedagogy in classrooms around the world. Rather than a revision, then, a totally new Guide was required. This Regional Guide is the result. The publication is designed to equip teachers and teacher educators with the competencies and resources to use ICT to transform their practices, and the school and education systems. But for the QUICK quantitative assessment of the contributions of author(s), this is the only parameter available and hence unless there is any alternative, this practice would continue. I remember Dr. Mashelkar's words when similar argument was made years before (Indian vs International journals). He indicated he is not against Indian Journals but they should raise their competitiveness so that the authors get attracted to them for publishing their science. So one should not equate Indian journals with no (or less) Impact Factor (IF). I also had exchange of thoughts on this with the authors and they admit that they not only benefit by getting IF to their credits but also the impartial refereeing system available with international journals help improving quality of their publication (exceptions apart). As a library professional, I would also like to indicate that the librarians can play a very important role in the organizations in helping assessment of individuals, projects, etc., with such bibliographic parameters. Dear Tejas, Every book in print has a copyright page in the beginning, which states that this cannot be done. The Copyright generally reads as " Neither this book or any part may be produced or transmitted in any form or by any means, electronic or mechanical, including photocopying, microfilming, and recording, or by any information storage and retrieval system, without permission in writing from the publisher" To make things easy, most publishers have now come out with the electronic form of all their print titles. These e-Books can be made available on IP basis, across the campuses, even in dormitories and hostels. Since most eBooks are unlimited access, the students can be benefitted widely. So the need for you scanning the titles can be minimized. Highly cited papers from India and China

Dear Professional, Research papers published by Chinese and Indian researchers during 1998–2007 and cited at least 100 times by end of 2009 are analysed. There were 776 papers with at least one author from India (amounting to 0.32% of all papers from India) and 2260 papers with at least one author from China (0.4% of all papers from China) that have gone on to be cited at least 100 times. We have identified prominent authors and institutions, journals used and fields of research. Although highly cited Chinese papers were cited on average less often than the highly cited papers from India, Chinese authors have been able to place their papers in high impact journals such as Nature and Science far more often than Indian authors. The Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research, Mumbai and Jawaharlal Nehru Centre for Advanced Scientific Research, Bangalore are the prominent Indian institutions, whereas universities in Hong Kong, Peking University, Tshing Hua University and several institutions under the Chinese Academy of Science dominate in China. In terms of citations, Chinese National Human Genome Centre Shanghai,Shanghai, tops the list. Conference on Digital Archiving of Community Knowledge Organized by Centre for Community Knowledge, Ambedkar University, Delhi 15-18 December 2010 Theme The conference will deliberate on systems and methods of collecting, documenting and applying Knowledge located and embedded in people and communities. Such knowledge is location and context specific and grows in the processes of its acquisition, use and dissemination by members of the community in changing social, political, cultural and economic contexts. The challenge is to archive such knowledge, usually oral, in a form that can link to acquisition, use and dissemination in modes compatible with formal, academic, multi-disciplinary and institutional processes. Effort must be made to ensure that such archives are available to the communities concerned to enable them to enrich their own repositories of knowledge. The conference is being organized in collaboration with the World Oral Literatures Project, Museum of Archaeology and Anthropology, University of Cambridge UK. In the context of the conference, what we refer to as Community Knowledge has also been called Traditional Knowledge, Oral Knowledge, Grass-roots Knowledge, Indigenous Knowledge, etc. The areas covered under this rubric include: * Oral traditions and expressions, including language as a vehicle of cultural heritage * Performing arts, such as traditional music, dance and theater * Social practices, rituals and festive events * Knowledge and practices concerning life, nature and the universe * Plastic Arts and Traditional craftsmanship. Dear Sudip If u are under a proxy, set the proxy and port in network proxy setting (System > Preference > Network Proxy). You need to be a sudoer. If u are connected directly, pl ensure that option is checked (by default). Now come to Synaptic Package Manager (System > Administration > Synaptic Package Manager (SPM)) and do the followings - 1> Come to SPM > Setting > Repositories and check all the source under ubuntu software; 2> Come to SPM > Setting > Repositories and check all the source under other software; 3> Select Download from Main Server (in the same window) 4> Come to SPM > Setting > preferences and go to Network tab to set manual proxy (if under a proxy) or Direct connection to Internet (if u r connected directly); 5> Now click Reload button (in the menu bar of SPM; Voila. That's it. Dear Friends, I discovered some fact on Digital Information and its growth in leaps and bounds. I want to share the same Digital information in India to grow 60 fold by 2020: EMC BS Reporter / Mumbai September 10, 2010, 0:44 IST India’s share of digital information is expected to grow 60-fold by 2020, driven by the roll-out of 3G and BWA networks, digitisation of television networks, and increased technology adoption among individuals, small and medium enterprises, enterprises and in Government services like the Unique ID project, Census, among others, said a study. The findings of ‘The Digital Universe in India’ sponsored by EMC, provider of information infrastructure technology, stated that India’s 2010 tally for digital information equals information stored in 2.5 billion iPads of 16GB. It would mean more than 464,000 separate towers of iPads of 16GB stacked flat on top of each other, each as high as India’s famed Qutub Minar. Or if the 2.5 billion iPads were laid end-to-end, they would be equal to a continuos line of more than 197 million Tata Nano cars. “The digital information explosion will create significant challenges for India’s CIOs and IT managers for two reasons. First, enterprises have responsibility for the storage, protection and management of 80 per cent of the digital universe’s data, and this liability will only increase as social networking and Web 2.0 technologies continue to impact the enterprise,” said Manoj Chugh, President, EMC India and SAARC and Director of Global Accounts for EMC Asia Pacific & Japan. “Second, while digital information will grow 60-fold, enterprise investments in IT and staffing will grow only in single digits. The cumulative effect is driving CIOs to transform traditional infrastructures into private cloud data centers that offer internal and external customers IT as a service,” he added. The EMC-IDC study further points out that 50 per cent more digital information is created today in India than the capacity that exists to store it. This number will grow to 80 per cent over the next decade. The study revealed that over the next decade (2010 to 2020), digital information in India will grow from 40,000 petabytes to 2.3 million petabytes, twice as fast as the worldwide rate. He further added that: “The digital information deluge will translate into a significant market opportunity in India over the next decade.
