Dear professional colleagues, Indira Gandhi National Centre for the Arts(IGNCA) in collaboration with ANWESHA, Guwahati is organizing a three-days Workshop on "Status of digitization, Digital Preservation and Access to Libraries and Archive in North-East India" at Guwahati during January, 2011. The exact dates of the Workshop will be announced very soon. The Workshop is aimed for participation only for the Libraries and Archives in North-East India. In this context, the essence of digitization is safe preservation of invaluable books and manuscripts and their easy access to the users. The climatic conditions in the North-East and the area's proneness to natural calamities make the preservation of valuable books and manuscripts an uphill task in the region. Because of our lackadaisical attitudes and lack of awareness, we have already lost precious books and documents of historical importance. Through digitization and digital preservation of books and manuscripts, we can safely preserve them. Preservation alone is not enough. We should also have easy access to the preserved materials for its meaningful use. E-access to digital libraries and archives saves us the money, time and energy of visiting locations for their use. It also paves the way for intellectual resource sharing. Unfortunately, we have not done enough towards digitization and digital preservation of our books and manuscripts in the libraries and archives in the North-East. The conservation needs of the region, in this respect demand that we have a fresh look at the status of digitization and digital preservation of our libraries and archives. Equally important is the issue of easy access to the books in the libraries and archival materials. Therefore, the proposed workshop will mainly focus on the following:- Conservation and preservation needs of the libraries and archives in the North-East. Identification of libraries and archive of historical significance. Collaboration between IGNCA and libraries and archives in North-East. Acquisition of personal libraries and archives from North East, India. The workshop will comprise an inaugural session, technical session, panel discussion and a valedictory session. It is expected that this workshop will offer us a road map towards digitization, digital preservation and easy access to the libraries and archives in the North-East, thus leading to a new collaborative effort of IGNCA and Anwesha. Exhibition on Rare and Old Books and Manuscripts: Weather in Assam is wet and humid in most part of the year which is not at all conducive for the longevity of books and manuscripts. But still there are many rare and old books and manuscripts in various institutions and personal hands in Assam. The objective as this exhibition will be to create awareness among the younger generation for better preservation of the invaluable books and manuscripts, because they are so integral part of our culture and enlightenment. The occasion will also be used to motivate prospective scholars, authors and book collectors to donate their personal collection of books to IGNCA for better preservation and use. The more details about the workshop will be made available at IGNCA website www.ignca.nic.in very soon. All the libraries/archives in North-East India are requested to participate in above events. The libraries and archives that unable to get travel support from their organization will be provided travel support also. There is no participation fee and registration will be confirmed on the basis of suitability of the participants to the Workshop. The lodging & boarding will be provided by the organizers to all the participants. Apart from lectures from the experts, selected presentations in form of case studies, project proposals and status paper may be accepted for presentation at the Workshop. Dear Library Friends, It is indeed shocking to hear the sad demise of Prof. A. C. Tikekar last thursday in Mumbai. I was knowing him since I was a student of M.Lib.Sc. at Mumbai University way back in 1987-88. He was an excellent teacher and a great Librarian. In fact, Prof. Tikekarji had held with distinction the office of the Librarian and as the HOD of Library Science at the Mumbai University before retiring in 1996. He earned the respect and admiration of his students and all the library fraternity for his dedication, sense of service and innate simplicity. His services to the Indian Library field shall always be remembered. May his soul rest in Peace. Indian Citation Index (IndianCitationIndex.com) Launched India is contributing good amount of knowledge contents to world literature but there is no tool for evaluation and measurement of its impact, quality and quantity. Accordingly, Indian researchers, scholars, policy makers, decision takers, funding agencies and others too have been facing a big problem to perform/assess the contribution/contributors objectively. At international level few tools/databases like WoS and SCOPUS are available but coverage of Indian knowledge contents in these databases are negligible. Therefore, these tools/databases are not adequate to evaluate/analyze India's knowledge contents. As is known that to come over such limitation, few of the countries, like China, Korea, Japan etc. have already brought out their own citation indexes for proper evaluation and representation of their R&D contribution. With the same approach and bridge existing gap, I am happy to inform you that the "Indian Citation Index (ICI)" has come in existence for the benefit of R&D community including researchers, planers, decision makers, funding agencies etc. and it is ready/available for users w.e.f. 25th October 2010. Indian Citation Index (ICI) is a home grown citation database, planned to have multidisciplinary information/knowledge contents from about 1000 top Indian scholarly journals. It provides powerful search engine to perform search and evaluate researchers, policy makers, decision makers, institutions, subjects, city, state etc. Presently, ICI have five years back files data depth of 400 plus journals which would go over to 1000 journals by March/April 2011. ICI is equipped with all major search features including analytics to serve the requirements of users. Also, by the end of December 2010, few more specific and elaborative search features will be in place to meet local needs more specifically. Indian Citation Index (ICI) is developed by a society named "The Knowledge Foundation" which is fully supported by M/s Divan Enterprise. ICI as a product for sale, distribution, enter into agreements, receive revenue etc is exclusively owned by M/s Divan Enterprise. The ICI may be accessed by its URL: www.indiancitationindex.com. The sixth International conference on Webometrics, Informetrics and Scientometrics and the 11th COLLNET meeting which was being held under the auspices of department of studies in Library and Information Science at Senate hall concluded here on Friday. In his valedictory address, K Siddappa, former vice-chancellor of Bangalore University said the trends in the technical subjects like the Webometrics, Informetrics and Scientometrics changes faster than ever in the contemporary world. Earlier, the knowledge updating in any of the subjects required years. The doubling of the concepts and new knowledge in any subject needed about 2-3 years. Now, the scenario is changed. The knowledge in any subject gets doubled within a year or six months. There was need to keep the students and teachers updated with the latest knowledge with conferences like these, he opined. Prof Hildrun Kretschmer, Honorary professor of Henan Normal University, Xinxiang, China, who is also the chair for the 11th COLLNET meeting said she was impressed with the Mysore conference. There was lot of exchange of new ideas, she said. How to integrate Google Transliteration API in Koha OPAC

Google Transliteration (http://www.google.com/transliterate/) is a useful online tool for cross walk between international and regional languages in India. You can type in your own language and convert the same in to any India language without any hassle. The same service can easily integrate in Koha OPAC to enable search in Indian languages. Type keywords in Google Transliteration input in English and put a space, it will convert your English language keyword in your desired regional language. Copy paste the converted text to Koha search box and press search button. It will give retrieve records in regional language stored in Koha. How to do it 1. Go to Google transliteration API page, http://code.google.com/apis/ajaxlanguage/documentation/#Transliteration 2. Find the section “Transliteration control with multiple languages” 3. Copy the code and paste in Koha > System Preferences > OPAC > Main User Block 4. If necessary, you can change the values in Default language, Source language and destination language 5. Save the content in “OpacMainUserBlock”. Transliteration box will appear in Koha OPAC page. You can also find the API for single language transliteration.
