CHENNAI: Thousands of MPhil degree holders<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=MPhil degree holders>, who are serving as faculty members in self-financing arts and science colleges, are finding themselves in an unenviable position following the Madras high court ruling making a pass in the National Eligibility Test<http://timesofindia.indiatimes.com/topic/search?q=National Eligibility Test> (NET) a mandatory qualification for appointment as assistant professors and above. In Tamil Nadu, the immediate impact of the verdict is that scores of aspirants will not qualify for the 1,024 posts of assistant professors (lecturers) in government/aided colleges for which the Teachers Recruitment Board is set to conduct interview following the green signal from the court. Several serving teachers in the self-financing institutions, who hold MPhil degrees sans NET qualification and are drawing paltry sums as salary, will not be able to apply for these positions which would have otherwise entailed them to UGC-fixed pay scales with job security. "Estimates show that there are just 12,500 NET certificate holders in various subjects in the country whereas the vacancies in the universities and colleges are manifold. Teachers serving in self-financing colleges with an MPhil degree (based on an earlier exemption granted for such candidates by the UGC from appearing in the NET) will now be stuck in their institutions with no scope for career mobility," said assistant professor C R Ravi, who supports the cause of the MPhil degree holders. "There is no option but to move the Supreme Court challenging the high court verdict. This will be done immediately," he added. While policy makers have argued that serving teachers must take efforts to clear the NET and qualify themselves for the job as part of enhancing standard in higher education, young teachers in self-financing colleges are contending that this is easier said than done. "A sense of insecurity has gripped the non-NET qualified teachers in private colleges. Teaching is no longer 8am to 2pm job. In self-financing colleges, teachers are made to work beyond duty hours. Even on weekends, we are being asked to work. There is no time to prepare for the NET, which is a very difficult examination, since a lot of administrative work is also thrust on us in addition to the academic work," said an assistant professor of a leading self-financing arts and science college in Chennai. "The questions in NET are not confined to our specialisation. For instance in the journalism paper, questions are asked about printing technology, flexography and gravure process, all of which are highly technical and irrelevant to the main area of communication," she explained. Dear members, Our University (Panjab University) will be holding a Job-Fest in the month of February 2011 covering all the disciplines including Library & Information Science. The department TPOs (Training & Placement Officers) have been given the responsibility to call/contact/inform the prospective employers (in their area) regarding the event and apprise them of the services/facilities to be provided to them in case they come to the University for hiring professionals. Such campus placement are very common in Engineering, Management, Computer Science (and the likes) but the problem I'm facing (being TPO) to identify such recruiters who will be interested not only in hiring LIS professionals but also visiting the campus for the same. I don't want to miss this opportunity for my students (our university has allocated grant for this Job-Fest). I seek valuable opinion/feedback from the learned members of the LIS-Forum to make the event fruitful for LIS students. Sotheby's auction house on Tuesday said the price paid for the work of celebrated ornithologist and painter John James Audubon was a record for any printed book at auction. Excerpt of the article ‘Never waste a good crisis” used to be the catchphrase of the Obama team in the run-up to the presidential election. In that spirit, let us see what we can learn from official reactions to the WikiLeaks revelations. The most obvious lesson is that it represents the first really sustained confrontation between the established order and the culture of the internet. There have been skirmishes before, but this is the real thing. And as the backlash unfolds — first with deniable attacks on internet service providers hosting WikiLeaks, later with companies like Amazon and eBay and PayPal suddenly “discovering” that their terms and conditions preclude them from offering services to WikiLeaks, and then with the U.S. government attempting to intimidate Columbia students posting updates about WikiLeaks on Facebook — the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured. The response has been vicious, co-ordinated and potentially comprehensive, and it contains hard lessons for everyone who cares about democracy and about the future of the net. Dear Professionals, Greetings! I am presently in United Kingdom on a “Commonwealth Professional Fellowship” to work on “Information Literacy, Web 2.0 and Access to Research”. As part of this fellowship, I visited several universities in England and Scotland to meet librarians involved in this activity. UK Librarians have been very cooperative and willingly shared their time and expertise with me. I could meet some authors who have made seminal contributions. This gave me a theoretical and pedagogical basis for developing similar information literacy initiatives at my home institute. Commonwealth Scholarship Commission (CSC) awards fellowships to committed librarians from commonwealth countries every year. Started in 2002, about seven Indian librarians have received this fellowship so far. CSC encourages Fellows to share their UK experience and benefits with fellow professionals and hence I have set up a blog http://kanamadi.wordpress.comThis is just the beginning and I would keep posting about my new learnings during and beyond this fellowship. I welcome all professionals to contribute to this blog to make it even more resourceful. Universal Decimal Classification in Indic/Dravidic langauges

The project was undertaken by volunteers from a number of Indian universities and was initiated and coordinated by DRTC in Bangalore. The Coordinator for the UDC Indian Languages Translation is Prof. Devika Madalli (http://drtc.isibang.ac.in/DRTC/dpmcv.html) Translated schedules are available for free use, downloads and distribution. We are pleased to inform that this abridged schedule with notes and examples are now completely translated in Bengali courtesy of Dr Bhaskar Mukarjee and Prof. Subal Biswas and can be browsed online http://www.udcc.org/udcsummary/php/index.php?lang=bn. As soon as the proofreading is completed we will make text available for download.
