Pay scales of Documentation Officer

Dear Professional Leaders, The UGC has submitted its report of the Pay Review Committe but unfortunately the problem regerding pay scale of Documentation Officer has still been ignored or neglected or oversighted. Most of the universities in India including the Delhi University has treated the Documentation Officer equivalent to Assistant Librarian (Which is otherwise true). However, few universities don't treat Documentation Officer at par with Assistant Librarians and don't give them the UGC grades. This matter need to be solved immediateley with UGC. The UGC has given green signal to System Analysts in the review committee but nothing has been said about Documentation Officer. It is time to take the matter with UGC. Here is the summary: Digital Library Initiative has been asked to submit a summary review of our thoughts on emerging trends in the roles of the subject liaison. The goal is to inform service division team leaders before their report out April 12 on this subject. From our review of published literature (see recommended readings below) and from our own experience, we endorse the now common assumption that the emerging future of the subject librarian will be, like the present, multifaceted and dynamic both within and among subject librarian positions. In addition, each position will be contingent in configuration depending on a series of changing variables and vectors such as disciplinary culture, digital technologies, evolving research practices, scholarly publishing, intellectual property rights, and economic and government support of higher education. So we speak of futures in the plural, offering a few possible scenarios in different formats (narrative, graphic, tabular), and concluding with proposals to take advantage of the new opportunities to leverage existing skills and develop new ones. --- Enjoy reading. CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN INDIA Dear Friends and Professionals, As you all know, we have completed 100 years of Library Movement in our country. Just for records, in 1910, His Highness Sir Sayajirao Gaekwad III invited W. A. Borden to set up free public libraries in Baroda State; and in March 1911 W.A. Borden initiated training for librarianship in Central Library, Baroda. We as a nation are completing 100 years of library education. Let us celebrate this occasion in a novel way – AS A MOVEMENT! Let us gift at least one book each to any two children in our region in a language of their choice. (Children after reading the book may circulate it further if they so wish.) Let us also try and inspire two more individuals, i.e., fellow professionals or any friends, to do the same. Just let us remember to write on the top of the title page of the books that we are gifting: “CELEBRATING 100 YEARS OF LIBRARY EDUCATION IN INDIA” The reasons for suggesting this way of celebration are: firstly, this would promote the culture of reading amongst the young; and secondly, we librarians would be able to gain a special and honourable place in the thoughts of the young minds; thirdly, this way we would be able to keep on our celebrations throughout the year and if desired even longer! 20% of peer-reviewed articles across all disciplines are now freely available. <http://elibrarian.grouply.com/message/113> Following study shows that 20% of all peer reviewed articles from all disciplines are now available with open access. This is really a mile stone for library professionals and those who are big supporter of Open Access. Background The Internet has recently made possible the free global availability of scientific journal articles. Open Access (OA) can occur either via OA scientific journals, or via authors posting manuscripts of articles published in subscription journals in open web repositories. So far there have been few systematic studies showing how big the extent of OA is, in particular studies covering all fields of science. Methodology/Principal Findings The proportion of peer reviewed scholarly journal articles, which are available openly in full text on the web, was studied using a random sample of 1837 titles and a web search engine. Of articles published in 2008, 8,5% were freely available at the publishers' sites. For an additional 11,9% free manuscript versions could be found using search engines, making the overall OA percentage 20,4%. Chemistry (13%) had the lowest overall share of OA, Earth Sciences (33%) the highest. In medicine, biochemistry and chemistry publishing in OA journals was more common. In all other fields author-posted manuscript copies dominated the picture. Conclusions/Significance The results show that OA already has a significant positive impact on the availability of the scientific journal literature and that there are big differences between scientific disciplines in the uptake. Due to the lack of awareness of OA-publishing among scientists in most fields outside physics, the results should be of general interest to all scholars. The results should also interest academic publishers, who need to take into account OA in their business strategies and copyright policies, as well as research funders, who like the NIH are starting to require OA availability of results from research projects they fund. Hello friends, Art of Giving is the buzzword today, especially since the recent visit of Warren Buffet, Bill and Milinda Gates to India. I wanted to share our own example of small acts of giving which are as meaningful as the big ones. I call it as the Long Tail of Giving. Chris Anderson made the Long Tail popular espousing it as the new business model of the Internet era and a buzzword. The Long Tail phenomenon also applies to the Art of Giving. Here is an exemplar. Dr. K.S. Chudamani, Deputy Librarian of the Indian Institute of Science (an alumna of the University of Mysore and a student of mine) called me couple of weeks back and shared her desire to institute a Gold Medal at ISiM in the memory of her recently diseased mother. Her munificent contribution of INR 50,000 was short of the required amount for the endowment. So I decided to use the Long Tail model to raise the remaining INR 50,000. ISiM students and alumni came forward and contributed towards the deficit and I am happy to announce the institution of the Parvathamma Subbaraya Gold medal for the top scorer of our M. Tech in Information Systems and Management Program. I take this opportunity to thank Chudamani for her munificent contribution towards this cause and also ISiMians for chipping in. I also would like to thank Prof V. G. 2011 Emerald Indian LIS Research Fund Award Supporting Library and Information Science research in India Call for Indian library and information science research proposals Emerald is delighted to offer a research grant for an Indian project in the field of library and information science research. The award will offer £2,000 (approximately US$3,000 equivalent) to fund the winning research project. In addition to the research fund it is also hoped that the findings of the research can be published in one of Emerald’s many excellent library and information studies titles. A number of Highly Commended Awards may also be bestowed. Applications should address the dissemination of knowledge with a specific orientation toward benefit for India. Eligibility The main member of the research team must be based in India. Judging criteria Each application will be judged, by a panel of experts, on the criteria below. The research must: * Be of significance, and in particular, illustrate how it will benefit India. * Demonstrate originality and innovation. * Make an outstanding contribution to theory and its application. * Illustrate the appropriateness and application of the methodology. * Demonstrate sound implications for theory and practice. * Application requirements Each proposal must be submitted using the online application form at: http://ww2.emeraldinsight.com/awards/india_lis.htm The following documents will be required electronically: * A summary stating specific goals, outcomes and benefits of the research.
