Dear All With reference to our earlier mail on 5 July 2011, please find below detailed programme of the "National Seminar on Perspectives of LIS Research in India towards 2020" and "National Workshop on Web 2.0 Tools and Techniques for LIS Services" from 9 to 11 August 2011. The event is organised by Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune at at GIPE Campus. About the Seminar (9 August 2011) LIS Research in India has been actively pursued for last several decades and a large number of research results are reported in national and international publications. During the recent past, Indian LIS Profession has a good impact on the LIS research. But at the same time, it is observed that LIS research from India is mostly limiting itself to data driven by use and user studies while there is also some amount of original research in other areas. It is therefore felt that there is a need to get right directions on future research activities for the Indian LIS professionals. On the occasion of the Birth anniversary of Prof. S R Ranganathan, GIPE's one day seminar is planned to address these issues. Eminent personalities will guide the seminar participants to identify and pursue new emerging research theories and techniques. The bookless library at Drexel University in Philadelphia We've been hearing about it for years, but the bookless library has finally arrived, making a beachhead on college campuses. At Drexel University's new Library Learning Terrace, which opened just last month, there is nary a bound volume, just rows of computers and plenty of seating offering access to the Philadelphia university's 170 million electronic items. Scott Erdy, designer of the new library, says open, flexible space — the furniture is movable and the walls act as one giant whiteboard — allows student and staff "knowledge transfer," a concept reinforced by Danuta Nitecki, dean of Drexel's libraries. "We don't just house books, we house learning," she says. The trend began, naturally, with engineers, when Kansas State University's engineering library went primarily bookless in 2000. Last year, Stanford University pruned all but 10,000 printed volumes from its new engineering library, making more room for large tables and study areas. And the University of Texas at San Antonio ditched print in lieu of electronic material when it renovated its engineering library in 2010. <http://www.time.com/time/specials/packages/0,28757,1951793,00.html> But when books disappear, does a library lose its definition? Steven Holl, architect of Queens Library's new branch, in New York City, says books still provide character and are a nice counterpoint to technology. "Acknowledging the digital and its speed and putting it in relation to the history and physical presence of the books makes it an exciting space," Holl says. "A book represents knowledge, and striking a balance in a library is a good thing." But other designers, like Dutch architect Rem Koolhaas who designed the Seattle Central Library, seem inspired by the challenge presented by a world going bookless. His vertical "book spiral" can house over 1 million books while opening floor space for the "equal presentation" of emerging media. Others are hedging their bets that if the library isn't bookless now, someday it probably will be. The upcoming transformation of the New York Public Library's main branch "anticipates the parallel and integrated worlds of electronic digital systems and traditional books" as they complement each other in flexible space that can endure changes, says architect Norman Foster. Dear Sir/Madam, *Suggestions to the query raised by Emmaneul Handling Overdue books - Corporate/Industry Library.* According to me libraries are meant to serve the society and to share the knowledge by providing various kinds of facilities to the End User. Collecting Fine itself demotivates the reader to access the library /or to use the resources has we are in digital world/virtual world. The rules/norms prepared to ur college/academy requirement is good as every Information centre is following. My request is to please follow the rules/norms , but it some exceptions try to collect the books back by putting up or controlling in some other way. Eg:-Before giving NO-Dues from Library(Holding Marks Cards/Convacations etc....) This presentation gives a brief overview of the digital preservation challenges, international scenario, the Indian digital preservation initiative and the emerging opportunities. About the speaker: Dr. Dinesh Katre is presently working as Associate Director & HoD of Human-Centred Design and Computing Group at C-DAC Pune, India. He is also the Chief Investigator of Centre of Excellence for Digital Preservation project sponsored by Department of Information Technology. Dear All I am pleased to announce the "National Seminar on Perspectives of LIS Research in India towards 2020" and "National Workshop on Web 2.0 Tools and Techniques for LIS Services" from 9 to 11 August 2011. The event is organised by Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune at GIPE Campus. About the Seminar LIS Research in India has been actively pursued for last several decades and a large number of research results are reported in national and international publications. During the recent past, Indian LIS Profession has a good impact on the LIS research. But at the same time, it is observed that LIS research from India is mostly limiting itself to data driven by use and user studies while there is also some amount of original research in other areas. It is therefore felt that there is a need to get right directions on future research activities for the Indian LIS professionals. On the occasion of the Birth anniversary of Prof. S R Ranganathan, GIPE's one day seminar is planned to address these issues.
