Regards, Padmavathi CFTRI, Mysore Report of the Open Access Day Celebration at CSIR‐CFTRI, Mysore In accordance with the CSIR open access mandate, the first ‘Open Access Day” celebration was held at CSIR-CFTRI on Friday, the 2nd December 2011 at the IFTTC Auditorium, CFTRI. The primary objective of this was creating awareness about the benefits of Open Access publishing among the CFTRI Research community. Dr. Geetha Seetharam, Head, Library, CSIR-CFTRI welcomed the gathering and gave an introduction about the open access initiatives at CSIR. The Chief Guest, Dr. Gangan Prathap, Director, NISCAIR, New Delhi who inaugurated the “Open Access Day” also launched the Eprints@CFTRI web site (Institutional Repository of CSIR-CFTRI URL: http://ir.cftri.com) The topic of his inaugural talk was “Science Communication Channels: Open access avenues and institutional repositories”. In his inaugural talk, Gangan Prathap, Director, NISCAIR said that the access to the scientific data and research papers has many advantages. The exchange of ideas and research between reputed scientific institutions in the world will be the future of science and technology. “We will be able to share and exchange the ideas about particular research process done in Brazil and China and that of India. There should not be any hesitation to make the research findings public in fear of somebody finding a mistake or pose a challenge to it. The data used by others and challenged by others is good. Science learns from mistakes and don’t be afraid of it,” he told the gathering. He cited the example of how famous drug companies in India and worldwide and retail giants like Wal-mart have a process called data mining to keep tab on their progress in the respective markets. He appreciated the role of CSIR‐CFTRI in actively advocating and promoting the OA initiatives. He congratulated CSIR-CFTRI, Head, Library & team and presented a ‘Gold Plaque' as a special appreciation award for their contribution towards the CSIR Open Access Movement. Dr. G. Venkateswara Rao, Acting Director, CFTRI, presided over the open access day. In his presidential address, he briefed about the institute’s library collection, e-resources, infrastructure and various other services offered to institute staff. He also said that CFTRI’s works and research papers were available hitherto within the campus through LAN and switching to open access would provide full text of all resources through internet. Dr. P. V. Salimath, Head, Biochemistry & Nutrition and Mr. S. N. Krishna Rao, Head, Computer Centre were also present on the dias during the Open Access Day Celebration. The technical session on “Benefits of Open Access for Scholarly Literature” was delivered by Dr. Francis Jayakanth, Scientific Officer, NCSI, IISc, Bangalore.In his presentation, he highlighted about the open access movement, journal system and initiatives being adopted globally. He also talked about the author’s concern and rights about OA. “Open Access Initiatives of NAL, Bangalore” was delivered by Dr. Poornima Narayana, Head, ICAST. In her presentation, she highlighted about the OA movement and emphasised about the CSIR OA Mandate and policy. She talked about the various initiatives taken for the establishment of NAL-IR and OA initiatives. She also mentioned of Open access day celebration at CSIR-NAL and about the NAL-IR user awareness program. “Eprints@CFTRI: IR of CFTRI- a bird’s eye view” was delivered by Mrs. T. Padmavathi, Senior Technical Officer, Library. In her presentation, shetalked about the IR initiatives at CFTRI and also highlighted the guidelines for self archiving and the publishers’ copyright policies to be followed for making the IR 100% OA. For further definition and clarification of the role of data in research see the Digital Curation Centre (DCC) website: ( http://www.dcc.ac.uk/digital-curation/what-digital-curation) The session will focus on the role of libraries and librarians in data curation in various countries and the challenges associated with establishing and operating data curation repositories, on a local or national level. Proposals must focus on one or more of the following topics: 1. Key issues confronted in establishing a national plan for data curation 2. The role of libraries in establishing data curation repositories. 3. A financial model for sustaining data curation within the library and/or university. 4. Training and preparation of librarians to participate in data curation. Dr. Naushad Ali P.M, Chairman & Coordinator of the workshop welcomed the gathering and gave an introduction about the workshop. The workshop was inaugurated by Prof. P.K Abdul Azis, Vice Chancellor, Aligarh Muslim University. He appreciated the efforts made by the department of Library and Information Science holding such a wonderful workshop on such a novel theme of the time. Subject Information Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT--www.itsubjectgateway.com-- funded by DST, Govt. of India) also launched by the Vice Chancellor of Aligarh Muslim University in the inaugural function. During the inaugural speech, Prof. Abdul Azis said that the Aligarh Muslim University has set another milestone in the field of Information and Communication Technology with the launch of the Subject Gateway in Information Technology (SIGIT) and the 3G/Wimax service. Prof. Azis appreciated the efforts of the Department of Library and Information Science in developing SIGIT, hub of Knowledge. He said that the present era is information based and we are living in a world where only those individuals or nations will achieve success who have knowledge power. Prof. P.B Mangla, former member, National Knowledge Commission stated that Users find it difficult to locate most appropriate databases or resources to search for relevant information according to their need. In this situation portals act as an intermediary to solve the problem by customizing information content to meet specific user need. He further said that technology is the key to access the information and its management is vital for easy access. Dr. R.K Chadha, Joint Secretary, Parliament of India appreciated the department in selecting such an apt theme of the time for the workshop. He said that the technology revolution has brought many changes to the way libraries and library staff provides information to users. Librarian should use modern tools to provide quicker, more complete and more sophisticated services to the users. Prof. Anwar Jahan Zuberi, Dean Faculty of Social Science enlightened that users find it difficult to locate most appropriate databases or resources to search for relevant information to their need. Web Content Management tools will help to solve this problem in some extent.Prof. Shabahat Husain extended the vote of thanks in the inaugural function of the workshop. More than seventy working librarians all over the country were rigorously trained over two days in total of eight sessions conducted in Computer Lab, Computer Science Department and Audio Visual Hall, Department of Geology, Aligarh Muslim University. The books will include both texts for secondary and higher secondary levels," Ahmed told TOI. It seems that the struggle is probably more against the perception, not the reality; to the extent that, it is often felt that to get rid off infringement has been comparatively easier than steering clear of this assumption! But, now, due to the enhanced knowledge of OA and relevant copyright issues, more and more authors started to either publish in Open Access journals directly or to self-archive in repositories. This allows the author to post his/her articles in an institutional repository as well as use the same for teaching and delivering in classroom presentations. Some renowned publishing houses e.g. Blackwell and Springer also felt the need and started allowing more and more OA options and self-archiving of articles published in their journals. This Seminar focuses on: (1) a few copyright models which distinguish the copyright and related rights in the case of traditional academic journals, for example, in which copyright is usually transferred from the author(s) to the publisher. -- Dear colleagues Once again it gifted sadness to the library professionals who went through with the UGC-NET results of june 2011.This time only 11 persons qualified(3 JRF+8 NET).lt was 5 or 6 in december 2010.I qualified NET in that December and now cleared JRF.I dont know why this low stats occuring in LIS field only.The questions were someway IT oriented in last december and it was majority conventional type questions in june.I expected much more NET clearers this time,but it didnt happen. I think a revamp should be made by LIS candidates in writing future NET exams.For the third paper i followed the "KISS" Principle (Keep It Short and Simple) this time.Wrote a small intro first for essay type questions ,then sub headings,underlining main points etc.There was no specific guide material i used,but capsulated recipes of common questions was there in mind.I request other achievers of this time to add their views to this forum. KohaCon11 was held 31 October to 6 November 2011 in Thane, India. Bob Birchall reports: One of the exciting aspects of the Hackfest was that a Koha training course was conducted for about 36 local librarians and students. Run over two days, the course covered all major features of Koha. Trainers were Jo Ransom (New Zealand), Marijana Glavica (Croatia), Irma and Bob Birchall (Australia) and Savitra Sirohi (India); Brooke Johnson (US) helped out and ByWater Solutions provided the training Koha instance – a real international effort! It was a pleasure to teach these librarians who were so hungry for knowledge of Koha. Also during the Hackfest the translation of Koha into Hindi was progressed and translation into Marathi started. Congratulations to the staff and students of VPM Thane for this outstanding contribution to Koha. Robin Sheat reports: A few of us got together to work on improving Koha’s Open Library integration. On the OL side there was Noufal Ibrahim and Anand Chitipothu. From the Koha side, Dobrica Pavlinušić, Ian Walls, Savitra Sirohi, and I spent time discussing how to make things work. I then spent much of the hackfest adding features to Koha that would allow Open Library to become something of a central cover repository with streamlined uploading to it. At the same time, Anand was working on the APIs on the OL side that Koha would talk to to make this easy. This project is still a work in progress, but the current state can be seen at http://bugs.koha-community.org/bugzilla3/show_bug.cgi?id=7152.
