Knowledge organization is the problem of arranging and classifying what is collectively known as a society in ways that can be easily understood and communicated to others. Traditional human based knowledge organization activities are increasingly challenged by computer-based retrieval techniques. It is appropriate at this crucial juncture to investigate the relative contributions of or both human intervened as well as automated (computer) approaches, the current challenges make it imperative to reconsider the basic understanding. This international conference is an effort in this direction in bridging the gap between the user, resources and mechanized systems, and with the requisite services offered by the LIS professionals. This conference also provides a platform for the LIS professionals across the geographies to gather together, discuss, discover and carry forward right solutions to transform the learning into their workplace to serve their customers better. About Organizers: Sree Siddaganga Mutt: at present provides food, shelter and education to over 9000 poor children and orphans, studying in various schools, colleges run by Sree Siddaganga education society. AICTE Guidelines for Tech/Mgt Libraries - discussions

Attn: LIS professionals working in AICTE moderated institutions. Dear professional colleagues, AIMS(Association of Indian Management Schools), Hyderabad in association with Indian School of Business(ISB), Hyderabad had organized a two-day workshop on Organizing Learning Resources in Bschools on Feb 10-11, 2012 at Hyderabad. Over 30 participants from other Bschools and engg colleges had participated (including me)in the workshop. The AIMS present was present during the workshop. During the workshop, the participants raised many concerns and difficulties while meeting AICTE Guidelines for libraries. The discussions were held in presence of AIMS officers and they suggested to prepare a memorandum and that could be submitted to AICTE though associations and other networks for better results(including AIMS). The following issues were raised by participants during the workshop. As the issues are related to all AICTE moderated institutes, members suggested posting the concerns on forums for concretizing the issues on logical ground. Following are some of the initial concerns for discussion and updating. Please participate actively in the discussion so that we can prepare a logical & acceptable memorandum for the submission to authorities though various channels including manlibnet, engg forum, IASLIC, ILA etc.... at the end, I will send the consolidated discussions to you all for review and finalization. I request all the members to make the discussion rich with constructive suggestions and please avoid biased/personalized criticisms on any individuals. Following are the Initial Points for Discussions: can be appended or modified: 1. on similar lines with guidelines for institutional resources & facilities and faculty members, The tech & management libraries request AICTE to prescribe guidelines regarding librarian's status, and compensation packages on par with faculty members. This is in line with Govt's order issued considering librarians as academic members and their status is on par with teaching community. 2. Like teaching staff formula, there are no guidelines prescribed for the Library personnel in AICTE Handbook. It is desirable that AICTE prescribes staff formula for libraries too. 3. It is more desirable for AICTE to oversee the proper utilization of library budget 4. Currently AICTE rules are more related to technical institutions but they are enforced on Management institutes too including libraries. since the structure and design of management institutes/libraries are different, it is desirable for AICTE to design set of appropriate guidelines for management institutes/libraries; 5. the AICTE guidelines for annual incremental addition to library needs to be relooked by them. For example the base collection of library at the start of institute is 100 * B titles, & 500* B volumes. The annual incremental addition is 50*B & again 500*B volumes. This annual addition needs to be relooked as it involves storage and display problems.["B" represents number of divisions in the institute, this "B" also interpreted differently by different organisations?] 6. of late students with more computer skills are getting admitted to institutes, their demands are more focusing towards digital resources. It is welcoming feature to note that AICTE has already prescribed guidelines for subscribing e-journals through databases. with increased number of tech-savvy students demanding digital resources, reduced users' physical visit and increased cost of construction of buildings, the AICTE may prescribe guidelines on adding e-books too. 7. AICTE has prescribed formula for subscribing national Journals. It is beneficial if AICTE takes steps to prepare a comprehensive list, which intern might help institutes to subscribe journals to their libraries. Free Email and Mobile alert Service form Open Source NewGenLib software

Dear Library Professionals, Recently we introduced mobile and email alerts in our library. When ever a user is issued a book or returns a book or renews or reserves or in fact does any sort of Circulation transaction an Email and Mobile alert is sent to them. This immediately became a "Talk of the town" in the campus. The users are very happy with this new service for 2 reasons. Firstly they have a record of their transaction and secondly they know what is happening with their library account. The enabling of Email and Mobile alerts only took 5 minutes to configure and it costed zero rupees. Since the library does not have an email account registered with our organization's domain we created an email account in Gmail. Since NewGenLib supports sending emails through Gmail account (apart from SMTP) enabling this feature was a cake walk. Secondly the mobile alerts service is also provided by NewGenLib Free of Cost. Hence this was also configured in 2 minutes. Prior to NewGenLib 3.0.3 Update 4 we were not able to send SMS to mobile phone that are registered at DND (Do not disturb service). Penguin and OverDrive: The Scuffle

Respected all, It is a news of concern that Penguin would no longer provide its ebooks via OverDrive (OD) that shares ebooks to lending libraries, which provide their content, of course, free of charge. OD extends its services to more than 7000 public libraries in US and approx. 950 publishers, and an access to over a hundred thousand works which OD helps libraries lending to patrons. Similar incidents happened earlier as Penguin once removed its titles from OD, but to return them again in few days without the new titles. Publishers, content providing mechanisms such as OD, and libraries all understandably have their own interests in mind, and some publishers, such as Simon & Schuster as well as Macmillan, don't lend books in this manner at all, while only Random House gives libraries full access to its entire catalog. The reason claimed in Penguin's retreat is in the process of lending books. While OD allows users to download books over the air directly to their devices, Penguin wanted the process to involve a download first to the patron's computer, then to the device, making the lending experience a bit more cumbersome. Regardless, this is likely not the last move in this discussion as publishers struggle to come to terms with the digital model. Earlier, at a meeting On February 8, American Library Association (ALA) president Molly Raphael met with executives at Random, Perseus, and Penguin and tried to resolve the issue. While nothing has been settled, it supposed to usher some optimism: there was a lot of air-clearing eliminating misconceptions while enhancing mutual appreciation, as claimed by her. But to the most of the publishers, a library is an institutional buyer especially in the print world, and not as channels for retail consumer sales to individual patron or user. Although some research clearly show that more than 19% of users who use the library weekly, not only read and borrow more books than other library users, but approx 40% of them confirm that they bought a book which was previously borrowed by them from the library; almost 70% bought a book by authors they discovered in the library. These Power Patrons are also more avid users of the library’s digital content and of social media.In fact, in contrast to what the publishers have feared for , ebook world may open up a new outlet for publisher sales, as evidenced by many libraries of late. The library website has usually a buy button on the homepage and that button enables patrons to purchase ebooks that are already checked out. In all this ferment, Random House, while reaffirming its commitment to library lending, announced that, with effect from March 1, plans to raise prices to wholesalers, who in turn set their own markups to libraries. Anyway, it indicates that the ebook ecosystem will continue to be wild and imprecise as publishers try to find the right pricing and access models for libraries and protect their businesses. We have adopted open source library automation system KOHA for all our house keeping activities including OPAC and the same has been made available in cloud hosting environment. We are working towards using Mobile SMSs for overdue reminders, informing the availability of reserved documents, documents purchased against requests, broadcasting important library related messages, etc. The automation model we have adopted is *-* Centralised database, decentralised inputting/ housekeeping activities and Universal access to OPAC. Once completed the OPAC will have > 10 Lakh records of documents available in colleges, institutes, PG Centres and various departments, which are directly under the control of Mysore University. We acknowledge OSS Labs, Bangalore for having given quality, timely and cost effective service to us in this matter. Probably ours is the first university library to go mobile way for OPAC (?). Modern Day Technologies in Academic Libraries

Respected all, The Library in University of Delaware plans to adopt OCLC WorldShare Management Services. Some 33 libraries have already started using the service since its launch in July 2011. Another 120 libraries have consented to use the service and the list is getting bigger every day. The first academic research library in the list is certainly the University of Delaware Lib which is also the first member of the 126-library Association of Research Libraries (ARL) to implement WorldShare. The current system delivers and promises to handle metadata management, acquisitions, circulation, discovery, license management and workflow improvements by 2013. According to Gregg A. Silvis, assistant director for Library Computing Systems at UD, the new system potentially reduces the unnecessary efforts by the current infrastructure of huge duplications. With WMS, effective centralization of works would be possible and the library staff can be freed up for other more pressing priorities. Your system is broken until proven otherwise... The most significant help you can provide your users is to add value and meaning to the information experience, wherever it happens; uphold their right to read; and then get out of the way... Information flows down the path of least resistance. If you block a tool the users want, users will go elsewhere to find it. You cannot change the user, but you can transform the user experience to meet the user. Meet people where they are--not where you want them to be. A competent, effective librarian is the key to good library services. They must understand children and have the ability to manage and direct them; they must have a wide variety of interests, vitality, tact, enthusiasm, energy, and ability to work with adults as they do with children. They must be familiar with children’s literature and be capable of carrying out the technical organization of the library. School library- a live workshop, which includes the topics like the services and collection management, a classroom library which supports the main library and importance of having classroom libraries in school, activity based library hour, role of a librarian and a library in schools. The speaker would be highlighting the specific library services provided to Students, staff and management as well. About the speaker: Vanishree has done her Diploma in Library Science, From PU College, Mysore, B.A., From University of Mysore, BLISc from KSOU, Mysore and MLISc from IGNOU. During her 20 years of service in many libraries, Vanishree has initiated and demonstrated the success of an Open Access Library in all the institutions she has worked. At present working at Pramati Hillview Academy, Mysore since 7years. It's a fully computerized library and used by maximum number of students. The library is used by children from age 3+ to 16, as well as teachers. Recently, at the invitation of NCERT, she was involved in writing a manual along with a few other professionals, for school librarians in the southern region of India. Her contribution to this manual was on planning and organization of library. She conducts many activities in the Library hour for students to enhance reading habit and effective utilization of available resources in the library. She also has a credit of successful celebration of National Library Week every year by inviting active personalities in the field. She has been recognized and invited by many schools in Mysore for planning and organizing the library. She has written few articles about Celebration of National Library week, Activity based library periods in schools, classroom libraries in school etc., school magazine and shikshana varte.
