Dear Kulkarni, Exactly i am also saying same words that systematic study will helps to get through. U r saying Only compulsory for Social Science and general science candidates. YES .Correct because, now Designations has been changed from Lecture to Asst Profesr , profesr and For Engineering faculties they are not under UGC and they are under AICTE. So they are having their own criteria for promotions and selection. We cant question UGC and here it is not INjustice at all?. And Librarians come under teaching only. So they are conducting NET/SLET Exams for selection. I would like suggest "Data Mirroring with RAID" option ............present we are using in IIT Hyderabad Library(IITHLibrary). Data mirroring can be implemented locally or different location or cloud based eg. Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud (Amazon EC2). I agree with Dr P Vyasamoorthy. This has happened in one of the top academic library in the country where thousands of books issued were lost and could not be called-back?. Dear Ratheesh K, It is good news atleast many of them are tried to make them sucess in NET(Objective Exam). i dont know why u people are biased with Objective or Descriptive. It is exam in a system , where everybody can compete and get through with open competition. if everybody has passed above eligibility cretieria then well and good that atleast all LIS Professionals are in success. Dont demotivate the librarians by posting all these. For your kind information UGC will give only 3% results in total competition. And eligibilty criteria will obviously changes and it rises where everbody is thinking all have passed by scoring above 60 and below 75. Eg: For GM-----112 marks is eligible and SC/ST----------80 Marks and OBC----100 will be the criteria for current exams. if this all crosses 3% then again the criteria may rises much more. NOw everybody who have scored more marks can celebrate by distributing sweets, if not BEST OF LUCK NEXT TIME. Dear Sir In the June 2012, edition of UGC Net one of the questions was related to the Browne Charging System (Paper III, Q. 49), wherein it was asserted and even validated by the UGC furnished key that Browne Charging System is simple and less time consuming. If it would had been simple and time efficient why there was need to develop other manual methods - Ranganathan ticket system, Newark and Detroit methods etc. Besides, how could we justify the statement when these manual methods are not in vogue and are replaced by library automation packages? Even we are witnessing the phasing out of Barcode circulation with RFID enabled circulation. Dear Mr. Shah, In my opinion all the old manual charging systems were excellent. Because of library automation these methods have been discarded and replaced with barcode /RFID system for simplicity, ease of operation and better control and reporting. However, maintaining circulation records in ELECTRONIC ONLY form is always dangerous since there is no manual record to verify in case of hard disk /system crash. This has happened in one of the top academic library in the country where thousands of books issued were lost and could not be called-back?. It is always advisable to have a manual record in addition to the electronic one, because our library users can deny if we cannot show the proof of borrowing. We may discard the physical card catalogue cabinet but you need to think twice before you eliminate the book card/member record in a fully automated library. Dr. M. Koteswara Rao Retd. My humble opinion (without any disrespect to the otherwise serious, major contribution, by the authors): I think the above study should have included the major players: core/oldest/leading universities with LIS programs in India (in the study missing universities are, such as, Delhi, Bombay, Madras, Karnataka, Mysore, Aligarh, Calicut, etc.). Missing I say so, not because these are my friendly universities, rather because the area of comparative librarianship requires NEAR/fitting criteria to match and then explore. For e.g., by the date of establishment listed in the article: it includes, BHU, 1941; Calcutta, 1945; Assam University, 2009; and Karnataka State Open University, no date). Similarly, comparing those that offer only or any program: Bachelor M.Sc. M. Phil. Ph.D. & Other, makes any senses? Furthermore, I quote: "The data in Table 3 indicates a total of 27 universities that offered master level degree programs however seven of these were branch campuses of the same university in multiple locations." [end of quote]. What will be the results of such a comparative analysis of a sub-continent/civilization (that has not just states, rather nation-states, according to a sociologist)??? In my experience, comparative study, then is not just 'feeling about the similarities' in oranges and apples, nor looking at Nagpur Santra with Kashmiri Apple or Ooty Apple (and moreover randomly picking by impulse, i.e., pict it if-you-find it in your way). Anyways, the above should help anyone to start, a real and systematic comparison of state-owned, private and other LIS programs that are offering formal way (classroom), and another study for informal programs (online/distance/remote/off-site/blended, etc.). UGC NET answers and marks a Dilemma

Dear Friends, It is quit interesting that as per the answer key published by UGC, most of the library and information science candidates (around 70% - the data and feedback from various social networking media) are above the cutoff marks... whether UGC will grant NET & JRF to all these candidates.....or UGC set any other criteria....? It is the time to think about whether objective model is good enough to select outstanding candidates...? I strongly doubt that, UGC will be in trouble to frame standard objective questions - non repetitive- in a subject like Library & Inf. Science...? Or next time on wards they may go for negative marks... or you suggest it....? I entirely agree with Dr Vyas Moorthy.  But, let us put this hard-hitting truth in a positive  and palatable form. What librarians deal with is only recorded ‘know-what’ (Declarative), and ‘know-why’ (Causal) information. The other forms of information/knowledge i.e. ‘know-how’ (Procedural), ‘know-when’ (Conditional) and ‘know-with’ (Relational) are still outside the purview of a library.  [LIS research may be inching towards all this. More collaborative research is required.] In addition, there are tacit knowledge such as ‘show-how’, ‘show-why’ etc.    Therefore, it is a huge universe of knowledge.   Extending our domain of activity is desirable. We librarians take pride in saying that we deal with data and information. It suddenly occurred to me that librarians deal with dead, solidified and frozen data converted into info through articles, chapters, books etc. Even the most nascent journal article is "stale chutney from the Fridge". Those librarians (a few exist) who put information (or raw data) as it gets generated, to use by their readers (on the fly so to say ) are great. Dear All, You would agree that there seems to be a growing use in OSS (Open Source Software) applications in all walks of life whether you are drafting a letter or using your mobile phone. Some of the common examples of OSS in our daily lives are Mozila, Linux, Open office, and so on. In this context we thought it pertinent to study OSS with specific reference to the library market. We believe that libraries have traditionally been open to adopting OSS and some examples could be Koha, Evergreen, Dspace, Eprints, Greenstone, etc. In line with this thinking we are conducting a brief survey on and their adoption in Indian libraries. The main objective of this study is to understand the status of IT applications in libraries in areas like Integrated Library Solutions, Digital library solutions, Website solutions, etc. in India and the potential of OSS in these areas of library functioning. We plan to identify factors that play a major role in, promoting and preventing, OSS implementation. The study also seeks to identify the preferred business models that may be appropriate in promoting the use of OSS in libraries. In the age of electronics, Nilgiris library promotes reading through UDHAGAMANDALAM: In an age of electronics where the habit of reading is facing a losing battle, the Nilgiri Library is making valiant efforts to revive it by conducting book club activities, hosting cultural events and scheduling story-telling and reading sessions for children over the last two years. The library is located in a Victorian building with striking gothic style architecture, on Commissioner's Road in Ooty. Members of the book club meet every second Saturday to discuss the book selected for the month. This past Saturday marks the beginning of the third year of the club. "It is an interesting experience. It is not necessary to agree with popular sentiment regarding the book. You are free to agree or disagree with the reviewer or ideas and concepts of the author," said Kamala, the coordinator of the book club. The book to be read is announced well in advance, usually three months before the discussion happens. The reviewer chooses the book to be read. This coming Saturday the book to be discussed is 'The Secret Life of Plants' by Christopher Bird and Peter Tompkins. Ravindran Govindan, who chose the title, will review the book followed by a debate on its content among club members. Members really look forward to the Saturday meetings. In fact, one member who knew that she would be missing one such meeting sheepishly asked if it could be recorded. Another member, Dr Kousalya would like to meet every week. "These meetings are very gratifying," Kamala said. A few recently reviewed books include White Tiger by Aravind Adiga, The Alchemist by Paulo Coelho and The Old Man and the Sea by Hemingway. The 150-year-old library also conducts reading and storytelling sessions for children. A small children's corner has been identified inside the library for the purpose. "Children are very enthusiastic about the reading sessions and they participate actively," said Kamala. A garden club has been formed by the library members to maintain the area surrounding the library building. "We want the library to be a hub of cultural activities," said Ramakrishnan Nambiar, secretary of the Nilgiris Library. About 40 saplings of indigenous trees were planted inside the campus a few days ago. The library also organizes talks by authors, audio visual sessions, dance and music programmes to draw more members. They also plan to come out with a cinema club. Last week it screened the Oscar award winning Iranian movie, The Separation. The screening was sponsored by INTACH, the Nilgiris chapter. "We plan to screen art movies and award winning movies for our members," said Nambiar. The cultural activities organized have attracted another 150 members to the library. Presently, the library which houses more than 40,000 books, some as old as 400 years, has 600 members. Run by a committee, it came into existence in 1858 to cater to European readers. Among visitors to the library are many distinguished personalities including I K Gujral, former Prime Minister of India, Fatima Beevi, former Governor of Tamil Nadu and Rajam Krishnan, a renowned writer.
