About the talk: Computers used to be big, expensive and difficult to use; today, microprocessors are almost literally a dime a dozen. This means that we can add information processing to just about any everyday object, turning it into a digital product. But how can researchers, designers and engineers come up with and evaluate new concepts? And how do we assure that these new ideas are not just technically novel but also are taken up and used? Grounded Innovation is an approach that aims to balance the two axes of inquiry - understanding how the world works; and invention - coming up with something new. To do this successfully, we must both apply systematic methods, and understand the material of computation. In this talk, I will talk about some important components in the process of innovation, and how we can use practical strategies to enhance the chance of coming up with meaningful products. I will also work through a number of practical examples, both from my own research and from major companies, to show how five qualities of digital products - information processing, interaction, networking, sensing and proactivity - can be used as a resource in innovation. This talk is based on the book of the same title, published by Morgan Kaufmann. You can find more information at http://www.groundedinnovation.net About the speaker: Lars Erik Holmquist leads the Mobile Innovations group at Yahoo! Labs in Santa Clara, CA. Previously, he was Professor in Media Technology at Södertörn University and manager of the Interaction Design and Innovation lab at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science. He was a co-founder and research leader at the Mobile Life Centre, a joint research venture between academia and industry hosted at Stockholm University, with major partners including Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, TeliaSonera and the City of Stockholm. He received his M.Sc. in Computer Science in 1996, his Ph.D. in Informatics in 2000, and became an Associate Professor in Applied IT in 2004, all at the University of Gothenburg. In his work he has developed many pioneering interfaces and applications in the areas of ubiquitous computing and mobile services, including location-based devices, handheld games, mobile media sharing, visualization techniques, entertainment robotics, tangible interfaces and ambient displays. All of his work has been carried out in multi-disciplinary settings, mixing technology, design and user studies, often in close collaboration with industrial stakeholders. S R Ranganathan and Mahatma Gandhi

Hello Friends: September 27 like January 30 is a day of remembrance. While the Mahatma Gandhi passed his last breath on January 30, 1948, on September 27, 1972 - exactly 40 years back- S R Ranganathan left this world. During Indian independence movement days Ranganathan received a telegram from Mahatma to go over to Sewagram, near Wardha, Maharashtra to discuss about library development in India. Ranganathan, when he joined the Madras University took a vow that he will never avail any leave of absence until his retirement. As such, he sought the advice of Rajaji-C. Rajagopalachari, the first Governor General of Free India- a close associate of Gandhi. Rajaji asked Ranganathan to reply to Gandhi that he would meet with him after his retirement. SRR did so. Ranganathan retired from Madras University in 1942. But his aged mother who wanted to visit Kashi Viswanath asked SRR to take her to Varanasi. Ranganathan replied to Gandhi that he would meet him on his return journey from Varanasi as his first duty was to fulfill the promise he made to his mother. Mahatma on receipt of the message sent cow's milk to Ranganathan's mother to Wardha Railway station. Although an orthodox in nature, his mother had a bath at Wardha station and drank the milk so graciously sent by Mahatma. Ranganathan wanted to meet Gandhi on his return from Benares, but Mahatma went on fast due to Hindu -Muslim riots and the Father of library science could never meet the father of the Nation. Thus, both the leaders – Mahatma and Ranganthan - proved themselves as KARMAYOGIs in the real sense of the word. For both of them WORK is WORSHIP. Ps:- This was narrated by Dr Ranganathan in one of our class at DRTC.I have published this anecdote in a magazine Day Star, December 1972 p.9,10.under the title Karma yogi Dr.SR Rangantan. I used to mention this during Librarians Day on August 12 at Hyderabad. My apologies for reposting this story after 10 years as I did in 2002. The code was adopted by the IFLA Governing Board during the World Library and Information Congress <http://conference.ifla.org/ifla78/news> held in Helsinki, Finland, from 11 to 17 August. Among the provisions of the code, librarians and other information workers should reject censorship in all its forms, support provision of services free of cost to the user, and promote inclusion and eradicate discrimination by ensuring that all people regardless of status have access to information. The code was drafted in 2011 and 2012 by a working group of IFLA's Committee on Freedom of Access to Information and Freedom of Expression (FAIFE)<http://www.ifla.org/en/taxonomy/term/443>. The working group was coordinated by Hermann Rösch, Professor of Library and Information Science, Cologne University of Applied Sciences. I am pleased to announce that a National level workshop on 'Drupal 7: An Open Source Content Management System' is organised from 26-28 Oct 2012 at 'Gokhale Institute of Politics and Economics (GIPE), Pune. As you know, the libraries have been trying to adopt new technologies for providing new services to their users and to reach the wider audience, librarians are sharing information through library websites. To create and maintain library web site, they are either using Blog based services or HTML to build complex library websites. To overcome the problems of creating library websites using HTML, there are range of open source content management software (CMS) available for building complex websites. Drupal is one of the popular, heavily used CMS tools which allow creating websites from simple pages to complex pages without having much technical expertise. Drupal is used across the world having large installation base as well as large user community across globe. By using Drupal, libraries can easily publish, manage and organize wide variety of contents. Drupal based library websites allow to provide contents dynamically as well as interactively by providing several web 2.0 based services. Considering the current trend, GIPE, Pune is organizing a three days workshop on Drupal. The main objective of the workshop is to provide participants hands-on on ‘Drupal Content Management Software’ from installation to creating a dynamic library websites. A new way of searching

I am very happy to share with you some results of the European Commission Living Knowledge (LK) project partnered by DRTC-ISI. The results have been already implemented by Yahoo! for new search techniques in 'Future Predictor', by University of Pavia, by SORA , Austria for Media Content Analysis and by University of Trento for faceted knowledge maps for building ENTITYPEDIA. A new way of searching Helped by the Indian Statistical Institute, European scientists have come up with a revolutionary new search technology. Inspired by a system for categorising books proposed by an Indian librarian more than 50 years ago, a team of EU-funded researchers has developed a new kind of Internet search that takes into account factors such as opinion, bias, context, time and location. The new technology, which could soon be in use commercially, can display trends in public opinion about a topic, company or person over time — and it can even be used to predict the future. “If you search for ‘climate’ on Google or another search engine, what you will get is basically a list of results featuring that word: there’s no categorisation, no specific order, no context. Current search engines do not take into account factors such as when the information was published, if there is a bias inherent in the content and structure, who published it and when,” says Fausto Giunchiglia, a professor of computer science at the University of Trento in Italy. But can search technology be enabled to identify and embrace diversity? Can a search engine tell you, for example, how public opinion about climate change has turned over the last decade? Or how hot the weather will be a century from now, by aggregating current and past estimates from different sources? Now it seems it can, thanks to a pioneering combination of modern science and a decades-old classification method, brought together by European researchers in the LivingKnowledge project. The team, co-ordinated by Giunchiglia, adopted a multidisciplinary approach to developing new search technology, drawing on fields as diverse as computer science, social science, semiotics and library science. In fact, the father of library science Sirkali Ramamrita Ranganathan, an Indian librarian, served as a source of inspiration. In the 1920s and 1930s, Ranganathan developed the first major analytico-synthetic, or faceted, classification system. Using this approach, objects — books, in the case of Ranganathan; web and database content, in the case of the LivingKnowlege team — are assigned multiple characteristics and attributes (facets), enabling the classification to be ordered in multiple ways, rather than in a single, predetermined, taxonomic order. Using the system, an article about the effects on agriculture of climate change written in Norway in 1990 might be classified as “Geography; Climate; Climate change; Agriculture; Research; Norway; 1990.” In order to understand the classification system better and implement it in search engine technology, the researchers turned to the Indian Statistical Institute, a project partner, which uses faceted classification on a daily basis. “Using their knowledge, we were able to turn Ranganathan’s pseudo-algorithm into a computer algorithm. The computer scientists were able to use it to mine data from the web, extract its meaning and context, assign facets to it, and use these to structure the information based on the dimensions of diversity,” Giunchiglia says. Researchers at the University of Pavia in Italy, another partner, drew on their expertise in extracting meaning from web content — not just from text and multimedia content, but also from the way the information is structured — in order to infer bias and opinions, adding another facet to the data. The technology was implemented in a testbed, now available as open source software, and used for trials based around two intriguing application scenarios. The Austrian social research institute SORA used the system to identify social trends and monitor public opinion. Used for media content analysis, the system could help a company understand the impact of a new advertising campaign, show how it has affected brand recognition over time and which social groups have been most receptive. Alternatively, a government might use the system to gauge public opinion about a new policy, or a politician could use it to respond in the most publicly acceptable way to a rival candidate’s claims. With Barcelona Media, a non-profit research foundation supported by Yahoo!, and the Netherlands-based Internet Memory Foundation, the scientists looked not only at current and past trends but extrapolated them and drew on forecasts extracted from existing data to try to predict the future. Their Future Predictor application is able to make searches based on questions such as “What will oil prices be in 2050?” or “How much will global temperatures rise over the next 100 years?” and find relevant information and forecasts from today’s web. For example, a search for the year 2034 turns up “space travel” as the most relevant topic indexed in today’s news. “More immediately, this application can detect trends even before these become apparent,” Giunchiglia explains. He points out that Google fundamentally changed the world by providing everyone with access to much of the world’s information. Currently, only humans can understand the meaning of all that data, so much so that information overload is a common problem. As we move into the age of big data, the meaning of the vast quantity of information needs to be understandable not just to humans but also to machines. The LivingKnowledge approach addresses that problem. “The future will be all about big data — we can’t say whether it will be good or bad, but it will certainly be different,” says Giunchiglia. UGC invites applications for Emeritus Fellowship scheme 11 Sep 2012 University Grants Commission, under its Emeritus Fellowship scheme, is inviting applications from superannuated teachers’ upto 70 years of age of universities, colleges and institutions approved under Section 2(f) and 12(B) of the UGC Act. The order has been issued by UGC Joint Secretary Dr. CS Meena. As per the scheme, the candidates should be actively engaged in research and teaching programmes in the preceding years to undertake research, without any restriction of position or pay scales. The assistance available under the scheme is honorarium of Rs. 20,000/- pm from UGC for two years (non-extendable). While a contingency grant (Non-lapsable) of Rs. 50,000/- pa towards secretarial assistance, travel within the country connected with the research project, stationery, postage, consumables, books and journals and equipments.
