For your information, the cover themes for forthcoming issues of CSI Communications are going to be as follows: November 2012 – Embedded Systems December 2012 – Intelligent Systems January 2013 – Enterprise 2.0 February 2013 – Programming Language Paradigms March 2013 - e-Libraries The Editorial Board of CSI Communications is looking for high quality technical articles for different columns pertaining to the above themes or emerging and current interests. We in Kerala is running or developing Model School, Model Police Station, Model Village Office, Model Hospital, Model Panchayath and so on. But, it is the fate of poor people in Kerala that they have to settle/satisfy with the Schools controlled by Govt. of Kerala. In these schools, even though there is no library and self learning system, students will get promotion in all classes. Here there is no effective mechanism to assess the quality and capability of these students in comparison with other students. But, it is a fact that all well to do parents, including Civil Service personnel, teachers, farmers, industrialists etc., are eager to select the CBSE or ICSE or even Internationals Systems for their children. I fear that is there any deliberate thinking from the political leadership or higher officials of the Govt. not to provide library service in the Kerala Govt. controlled schools and at the same time admitting their children in CBSE or ICSE or International Schools. Sometimes this may be an indirect conspiracy to keep away the poor people always poor by denying their primary necessity or quality education. But, as a library professional we should keep our philosophy and ethics of the profession to provide quality information and knowledge to all. In this race, first we should unite together through library associations and fight for the primary requirement of our society. Though, I am not satisfied with the activities of our associations, in this juncture, it is high time to evaluate ourselves and find out "in how many associations we are members?." Let me disclose that I am a Life Member of four national associations. This membership was took 25 years back immediately on completed BLISc. I hope one day the children of poor people can enjoy good library services. Dr. A.T. Science Researchers on Google Scholar, Web of Science, and PubMed, with Implications for Library Collections Budgets

"In this fast changing environment the best advice is to be in close contact with your researchers as they change their information seeking behaviors in response to the changes in the discovery tools available to them". No library will pay for A&I databases, if no one is using/preferring them, especially when the budget is shrinking. "Science researchers at the University of California Santa Cruz were surveyed about their article database use and preferences in order to inform collection budget choices. Web of Science was the single most used database, selected by 41.6%. Statistically there was no difference between PubMed (21.5%) and Google Scholar (18.7%) as the second most popular database. 83% of those surveyed had used Google Scholar and an additional 13% had not used it but would like to try it. Very few databases account for the most use, and subject-specific databases are used less than big multidisciplinary databases (PubMed is the exception). While Google Scholar is favored for its ease of use and speed, those who prefer Web of Science feel more confident about the quality of their results than do those who prefer Google Scholar. When asked to choose between paying for article database access or paying for journal subscriptions, 66% of researchers chose to keep journal subscriptions, while 34% chose to keep article databases." I am happy to let members of Lis-forum know that Kesavan Inst. of Information and Knowledge Management (KIIKM) has just published a book, titled, Case Studies for Teaching Library Management. The book is authored by N G Satish of ASCI, Hyderabad and Anil Takalkar of Centre for Media and Rural Documentation,National Institute of Rural Development, Hyderabad. L J Haravu, Managing Trustee of KIIKM has edited the book. The book provides teachers of library management and library managers with skills to utilize the case study approach as an effective method for problem-solving, decision making and consensual deliberation. The 39 case studies included in the book are based entirely on Indian scenarios and perspectives. They reflect the way that libraries in India are set up, staffed and managed, and subject, as libraries are, to the way Indian organizations are managed. This means that we can add information processing to just about any everyday object, turning it into a digital product. Grounded Innovation is an approach that aims to balance the two axes of inquiry - understanding how the world works; and invention - coming up with something new. You can find more information at http://www.groundedinnovation.net About the speaker: Lars Erik Holmquist leads the Mobile Innovations group at Yahoo! Labs in Santa Clara, CA. Previously, he was Professor in Media Technology at Södertörn University and manager of the Interaction Design and Innovation lab at the Swedish Institute of Computer Science. He was a co-founder and research leader at the Mobile Life Centre, a joint research venture between academia and industry hosted at Stockholm University, with major partners including Ericsson, Microsoft, Nokia, TeliaSonera and the City of Stockholm. He received his M.Sc. in Computer Science in 1996, his Ph.D. in Informatics in 2000, and became an Associate Professor in Applied IT in 2004, all at the University of Gothenburg. In his work he has developed many pioneering interfaces and applications in the areas of ubiquitous computing and mobile services, including location-based devices, handheld games, mobile media sharing, visualization techniques, entertainment robotics, tangible interfaces and ambient displays. All of his work has been carried out in multi-disciplinary settings, mixing technology, design and user studies, often in close collaboration with industrial stakeholders.
