Marked by the presence of a large number of delegates from across the globe, conference received an overwhelming response. The formal inaugural function of 2nd International conference on academic libraries [ICAL] 2013 started with lighting of ceremonial lamp by the dignitaries’ on the dais and with enchantment of divine Saraswati Vandana. The dignitaries were welcomed with the flower bouquet. This was followed by the release of souvenir and conference proceedings on the theme “Academic Library Services through Cloud Computing: Moving Libraries to the Web”. The organizing secretary, Mr. Subhash Deshmukh welcoming the guests, emphasized upon the need to migrate the conventional library setup to library services based on Cloud computing. This will provide easier and simpler methods for greater sharing and penetration of library resources to wider community. Predictions are that within five years, all library collections, systems, and services will be driven into the cloud. Inspired by the latest advances in virtualized computing resources on the global network, the 2nd International Conference on Academic Libraries, ICAL-2013 seeks to explore how cloud computing could be applied for library applications, in particular for moving libraries to the Web. Being a new and emerging area of interest to library and information professionals, the Conference will focus on academic library services through cloud computing. In addition, the Conference will seek to explore cloud computing for converting ICAL-2009 roadmap into an action plan for repositioning academic libraries into next generation libraries. Prof. Dilip K Bandyopadhyay, Vice Chancellor, GGSIP University expressed his gratitude to the dignitaries and participants for their over whelming response and described how the idea of holding the conference at IP University was conceived in year 2009 itself. In his address he dwelt upon the theme of the conference which seeks to explore how cloud computing could be applied to benefit libraries; in moving library data, services, and applications to the Web, in over-coming barriers to sharing library resources on the Web, in collaborating with libraries on new programs and services on the Web, in setting up the required computing resources on demand in the Cloud. He further highlighted the challenges in front of library fraternity in today’s time and emphasized upon the use of web based technologies. He elaborated the catalytic role of technology in solving the problem of resource management. According to Prof. Bandyopadhyay, the conference offers an international platform to all stakeholders in the academic enterprise to network and debate on the theme and topics of the conference and will provide a forum for presentation of issues on virtualized computing resources on the global network through original presentations, and extending opportunities to exchange and present know-ledge and out of box ideas at the highest technical level. Prof. Narendra Jadhav, Member, Planning Commission, Government of India, the chief guest in his key note address exhorted the libraries to organize their services through cloud computing in view of increased role of libraries in knowledge economy. Prof. Jadhav in his very illuminating and illustrious speech retraced the development of Indian economy since 1991 and how India has been able to cope up with the challenge of recession and economic slowdown. However he lamented the fact that India’s research out was very low as compared to China and United States. Prof. Jadhav touched upon the advantage of India’s huge population but cautioned for sustainable and inclusive growth. Delivering the Guest of Honour lecture, Dr. BK Gairola, Mission Director, E-Governance, Govt of India shared his views about role of technology in disseminating knowledge. He spoke lengthily on ICTs and how same is being leveraged to harness growth and development. Dr. Gairola mentioned how cloud computing has generated much interest recently and developments in this space have revolutionized the way computing infrastructure is used. Instead of installing packaged software applications on their computers, people and businesses will use their web browsers to access a wide range of “cloud services” available on-demand over the Internet. Its success has seen a proliferation in the number of applications which have leveraged various cloud platforms to applications such as Gmail, Wikipedia, Flickr or Twitter on the Web. Mr. Marshall Breeding, former Director for Innovative Technology and Research at Vanderbilt University, USA delivered the keynote address and touched upon several important developments taking place in the world of libraries. It was emphasized that being a new and emerging area, cloud computing has generated much interest in library applications. Predictions are that within five years, all library collections, systems, and services will be driven into the cloud. Cloud Library Management Systems, Cloud OPAC, Cloud Electronic Resource Management Systems, etc. will replace individual and standalone library systems such as LMS, OPAC, and ERMS. I am extremely sorry to note the demise of Dr M.A.Gopinath who needs no introduction to Indian LIS professionals. Concurrent with the establishment of DRTC, Mr Gopinath joined Dr S. R. Ranganathan as his Research Assistant, graduated from DRTC in early 70s, served as a faculty and Head ,moved to North Carolina University as a visiting professor ,and back in Bangalore spent rest of his life. My association with Dr Gopinath dates back to 1966 when I joined DRTC as a student and later working with him closely as the Joint Secretary of Mysore Library Association (now Karnataka State Library Association). Dr Gopinath will be always remembered along with Dr SR Ranganthan as the co-author of "Prolegomena to library classification". May his soul rest in peace. Deva B. Sad demise of our beloved teacher

Dear Professionals, Prof Gopinath's departing is not only a big loss to Library professionals but also to other professionals and great personalities like Sri Kanthi, Prof AC Devegouda with whom he was involved in library development. His activities were very vast and his admirers were huge. He never said NO to anyone and he helped everyone. When we visited DRTC as a part of our study tour (LIS) from Karnataka University, Dharwad in 1973 his lecture to us (LIS students) was so inspiring which made me to join DRTC later. My association with him was started in 1974 when I joined St John's Med College, Bangalore. I was regular in attending DRTC Colloquia, Annual Seminars, Refresher courses, Endowment lectures and other invited lectures. His involvement was so deep in all these without his presence no action was perfect. My interaction with him increased when I joined DRTC course in 1979. DRTC was temporarily located on Church Street and the hostel was still in Malleswaram. He was so concerned of every student and used to visit us in the mornings, evenings and sometimes around 11pm and on holidays, he was testing the food quality, checking the proper procument of ration. After attending his classes we used to request him for additional classes not only Classification Theory but also any subject. He was a master in every facet of library and iinformation science. He never tired of explaining. We enjoyed his narration of his experience and fond memores with Prof. Ranganathan. His immense help was always there for students in their Colloquia, assignments, exam, projects. He was a *GREAT TEACHER and BELOVED TEACHER.* He had a phtographic memory, he could tell any incident so precisely with full details and remember the names so well. He was like a *STAR* for library professionals not only in Bangalore but any part of the country later in the world. He never referred any books or notes for his lectures. I do not know how many noticed this - he was carrying a notebook to every lectures and making notes, he never tired of this note making practice. Whenever we went to his house in Malleswaram found him playing with his daughter and son like a child, he could reach any level. He was a great human being and live in our hearts forever. My sincere condolence to the bereaved family. I am deeply saddened to hear this morning from ARD Prasad that Prof Gopinath is no more. I had known Gopi since 1969, when I joined Ranganathan as his Research Assistant. In fact, when Gopi moved to DRTC as a faculty member in 1969, I took over from him as Ranganathan's Research Assistant. It was Gopi who initiated me to Ranganathan's style of working and who helped me a lot in my initial days. We were good friends and I fondly remember Gopi and Prof Seetharama, visiting us in Jamshedpur, when I was with XLRI, and spending two days with us. My sincere condolences to the bereaved family P. Sad News-Demise of Prof MA Gopinath

Dear Professionals, The demise of Prof. M.A. Gopinath has created big vacuum for the LIS profession and also LIS Teaching community in the country. His publications especially the edited DRTC annual seminar volumes have formed part of LIS syllabus. He started wing with with Dr.SRR at the age of 16. He has helped number of students not just in LIS academic and research activities, but even as a personal friend of many. I owe him for completing my DRTC Course, else I would have discontinued it due to some reason. He was simple and lovable person, but very serious in his work. He tried his level best to bring out 7th edition of Colon Classification. Classification research was almost synonymous with his name. He would talk on any subject on the earth hours together. We never forget his face becoming red some time due to some disorder in DRTC, especially our hostel mess in Malleshwaram. I We miss him very much. May his soul rest in peace. I suggest the DRTC alumni to take some step in organising some program in his memory annually. Regards, -- Dr. I.R.N.
