Dear All, K M Govi, bibliographer and former Editor of the National Library in Kolkata, died at his residence at Thalassery, Kerala. Shri. Govi also documented Kerala's literary heritage by compiling 10-volume "Malayala Granthasoochi", a comprehensive index of books published in the language up to the year 2000. Govi was born as youngest son of C K Sankunni Nair and K M Mayi Amma in 1930 at Chettamkunnu in Tellycherry. Passed SSLC in 1930 from BEMP High School. Took B A Degree from Brennen College in 1950. Worked for a short period in Government Secretariat, Madras. Took Post Graduate Diploma in Library Science from University of Madras in 1952. Worked as Distinct Librarian under Malabar Library Authority from 1952 to 1956. Established the Calicut District Library and branch libraries in different regions of Malabar as the first phase of establishing Malabar Public Library Network. Based on these experiences wrote ‘Library Science’ the first book on that subject in Malayalam language. From 1956 to 1987 worked in Indian National Bibliography at Central Reference Library in National Library, Calcutta. Envisaged and implemented the Malayala Granthasooji consisting of information on books published in Malayalam from the year 1772 to 2000 in seven volumes running into more than 10000 pages. Based on his years of research wrote the book Adi Mudranam Bharaththilum Malaylathilum. Also published a book Public Library which is a bird’s eye view of the public library movement worldwide introducing the social and political factors that helped the evolution of the public library system. His other publications include Catalogue Nirmanam, Nammude Reference Sahityam. Dear Friends, Greetings for the day...!!! I was very much present in the seminar organised by KALA and felt it is appropriate to share with the thoughts of Vasanth Raju and Sangeeta Narang. As I heard, MyLA (Mysore Library Association) started by Dr. S.R.Ranganathan was later renamed as KALA. Salutes are due to so many super senior stalwarts of LIS for their effort and struggle for the surveillance of the prestigious association. Dr.A.Y.Asundi, Sri. N.V. Satyanarayana, Dr. T.D.Kemparaju, Dr. IRN Goudar and others spoke on this occasion. Their views and concept were very clear for the development of the profession as well as the promotion of Association. They requested all the members of other LIS associations also to join with- under one umbrella. But as for as my observation is concern, few youngsters in the association took over the charge and absorbing posts for their personal gains rather than professional developments in the recent years. They are ready to break the rules / regulations and posing useless rules wherever applicable to achieve their personal goals and even fight for it in the general body, which is not an healthy development on the oldest LIS professional Association (KALA) in Karnataka. Some of the members who cannot tolerate these unhealthy developments and those who have the vision to fight for the real cause and burning HR related issues (like, cadre and recruitment rules, Pay scales/parity, Service conditions etc.,) and to control adverse decisions being implemented by different commissions of the government, are thinking to come out of this association and planning to formulate a standard state level association with the guidance of eminent personalities in LIS. In this context they approached me also. According to them, the committee may be represented by entire LIS freternity like Public Library, Academic Library (PU/Degree College/ University) and Special Libraries (Technical Colleges/ Research Laboratories) etc,. The Association should have the common goal and should fight for the actual professional cause without any prejudices. According to me- As we have observed ongoing developments in the society, it is need of the hour also. In the interest of the association and considering the future of library profession- Either all the members of KALA should take initiative, reunite / reorganize, proceed with the common goal as suggested by Sri. N.V.Satyanarayan or We should welcome the service minded Professionals to fight for the real cause rather than personal gains. However ultimate result should be helpful to the profession. Thanks for KALA for raising the issue 'save libraries save librarianship' in the seminar. Hope such meetings and seminars will b ring awareness on the activities of a professional association. NewGenLib(NGL) Counter- Visitor tracking module

Dear Library professional In our Siddaganga Institute of Technology (SIT), Tumkur Library, we were facing a challenge of tracking the Visitors to the library. The challenges were 1. The majority of the visitors to the library usually visit the Reference section. Hence these visitors do not visit stacks and get books issued from there. Though we have a good strength of such visitors we do not have statistics of them. For example: Which department students utilize the library facilities? 1. Since every visitor to the library is expected to fill in a register, it is a painful activity for the users to enter the details in the register. This problem becomes worse during the peak hours for example during recess time. 1. When the students are leaving the library, the security at the library needs to cross check the Issue slip against the books being carried by the student 1. Lastly the security personnel also wanted a register for non-library material being carried by the students into the library. So that when the students are leaving the library these belongings can be crossed checked with the register. But maintaining a register will be a time taking process. These were challenges faced not only by our library but also other such libraries in Tumkur (Tumkur is a District located 70 Kms away from Bangalore). Hence we, the NewGenLib(NGL) Open Source Community in Tumkur requested the NGL Development Team to develop a Visitor tracking module in the NGL software. This was developed for our community of libraries. NGL team has released a new tool called NGL Counter. The following are the features of NGL counter. 1. Simple functionality and User friendly. Little or no training required to use it. Our security personnel got easily accustomed to the new application. 1. Rapid Visitor-In and Visitor-out functions to handle large numbers during peak visitor timings. Our students are very happy because security person scans their id card and sends them in. Average 1 sec per transaction. 1. Functionality to record personal belongings and non-library material at the time of Visitor-In. No necessity to maintain register. 1. Visitor-out functionality displays the list of library books that were checked out by the Visitor from Circulation desk. Issue slips are no more required. 5. We now have complete statistics of all the users visiting to the library We are very happy with this facility. This is not only helped our library but the NGL community of libraries in Tumkur. MyLISA OPENS NET/SLET Mock-Test

Dear Sir/Madam, As you are aware that MyLISA has organized a orientation program (Orientation Program for Enthusiasts of NET/SLET-(OPENS)) for NET/SLET exam aspirants, MyLISA OPENS conducted a mock-test for encouraging and boosting the confidence of NET/SLET examination aspirants on 1st December 2013 at the SBRR Mahajana First Grade College. The question paper was set by an expert who has three decades of experience in LIS domain. The mock-test question paper carried 50 objectives questions each question carrying one marks. Ramchandra Potdar : Multifaceted Librarian. (1928 – 2013) Rambhau (eldest son of Dr. P.B. Potdar) was born on 28th Jan 1928 and brought up and educated at Akola (Vidharbha). He started his career as librarian of Shree Sanatan dharma Sabha library, Akola in 1949. It is worth mentioning that all his 4 brothers and sister also worked there as his successor in the same library and from the last 64 years the Potdar family devoted themselves for the development of this library and brought this public library to repute. This may be the record of the public librarian's profession in the history of the public libraries in Maharashtra. Rambhau was the student of the first batch of dept. of library and information science, Nagpur university in 1957. He got inspiration from late Mr. P.S. Phadake university librarian, late Mr. K.M. Ujalambakar, late K.D. Puranik then assistant director and director of libraries of Maharashtra state respectively and joined Vidharbh public library movement and taken active parts for the development of the public libraries of this region. After his L.I.S. education, he joined Khairagad Sangeet university as Asstt. Librarian and then joined C.P.& Berar college Nagpur. In the year 1964, he joined Nagpur university library and retired in year 1986. During this service he also worked as librarian of l.R.T. Commerce College, Akola on lin and rejoined the university library. After his retirement from the university library on request from the management of the colleges he joined as librarian of H.V.P.M Degree College of Physical Education Amravati, college of engineering Pusad, college of engineering Shegaon to develop their libraries. Rambhau had another facet i.e. journalism. Prior to join library profession, he worked in the different capacities in the editorials sections of Nagpur Samachar, Dainik Matrubhoomi Akola and Nav Hind Times Goa. He did his bachelor of journalism from the Nagpur University. Further, he has delivered radio talks and written articles on different aspects of librarianship journals like Granthpal, Sahitya Sahakar, Granth Parivar etc.... He has written books "Shighra Kase Vachave", Granthalain Grantha Bandhani, Shaleya Granthay, Vidyathyanchi Vachanabhiruchi also edited books like Maharashtra Book World, Vidharbhatil Niwadak Granthachi Granth Suchi, Granthanche Pustak and Abhanga Ramayan (written by his late father Dr. P.B. Potdar). He published these entire books himself thru his Rambandhu Prakashan. During his service as librarian he established Mitra Sahakar Mandal a Registered organization which was established to collect personal valuable books and donated more than 40000 books to public libraries. For this work he was awarded Sant Dyaneshwar Bhushan, Rajya Stariya Gaurav Puraskar in 2012. He was the eldest son in the family with 4 brothers & 1 sister. From his inspiration most of the family members joined library profession. Jayram Potdar hold the post of librarian at Regional languages Library, New Delhi and Shriram Potdar retired as university librarian from Amravati university and Sharau Joshi as the librarian of Govt. Polytechnic Pune. It is worth mentioning that 7 other members of the family have worked in library profession. >From his father, he continued his legacy as musician and used to play organ for Natya Sangeet. He was having 100 yrs. old Organ. He passed away on 28th Nov 2013 at his residence, Jayashree colony, Savedi, Ahmadnagar at the age of 86 and left his wife and 2 daughters and entire Potdar family. MyLISA OPENS: A Success Story

Dear Sir/Madam, Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists (MyLISA) is the voice of the librarians and information professionals from the city of Mysore. It is the forum which is furthering the knowledge and skills among information professionals. MyLISA started a new initiative called ‘Orientation Program for Enthusiasts of NET/SLET’ (OPENS). It was training cum orientation program for those who have taken the NET/SLET examinations. The following is the brief report of OPENS. We learned that there are little more than 300 students from Mysore region who have taken SLET examination this time. We could attract 1/5th of them here. There were 59 participants; 28 of them were females and 31 were male. A few participants fly every week from Bangalore for this purpose alone shows the interest of participants in MyLISA OPENS. 31 participants were from MyLISA fraternity and 28 non-MyLISA members also participated in the training. The classes were very regularly held on afternoons of Saturdays and mornings of Sundays. In all 37 sessions of two hours each were conducted which amounts to 74 hours of teaching and interaction. What is very satisfying for the organisers is that they could give more than what they promised at the beginning of the program. In fact, they envisaged just 60 hours of training; but finally ended up with 14 hours extra classes. MyLISA is happy that it could do it. The classes were started on September 29, 2013 and ended on December 1, 2013; in all there were 12 week end sessions along with classes on 4 public holidays. There were 66 hours of subject oriented classes and also 8 hours of paper1. Even here MyLISA had promised only subject oriented classes. However, as the days proceeded there was an increasing pressure from the participant to have some classes for Paper 1 also. The resource persons for Paper 1 were Sri Nischit and Sri Y. Narasimhan who despite being young were found to be on par in their teaching with most experienced resource persons. They covered 5 units of paper 1 and provided tips for other remaining units. MyLISA could attract a galaxy of excellent resource persons for teaching subject papers 2 and 3. It was able to get the esteemed services of 11 resource persons for subject oriented teaching among them 4 were from outside Mysore. Resource persons were Prof. Mallinath Kumbar, Prof. M. Chandrashekara, Prof. P.G. Tadasad, Dr. C.P. Ramasesh, Dr. K. Prakash, Dr. Ramesha, Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Dr. Dharanikumar, Dr. Adithya Kumari H., Sri Nagaraja S. Dr. Sunil M.V., and Dr. Vasantha Raju N. All of them are experts in their own field. All the ten units were covered and on an average each unit got more than 6 hours for teaching and interaction. All the resource persons introduced the basic concepts involved in the subjects that they taught highlighting the modern developments/trend. All of them used well prepared PPTs for their presentation. Each of the resource persons gave their own tips for solving the objective type questions. Previous years question papers were solved. In a way all the objective papers that are available for the past ten years have been solved. This is a great benefit for the participants. Thus the participants have had a number of tips from different resource persons. It is hoped that they find them useful in the ensuing examination. Reading resources were distributed in the form of PPTs, Weblinks, Printed Notes, etc., depending upon the convenience of the resource persons. Interactive sessions had many questions from the participants. This shows the quality of training programme as a whole. One special lecture was organized during the period. It was delivered by eighty-year old scholar librarian Sri L.J. Haravu. The topic was “Open Access: The Philosophy and Trends”. The lecture was in commensurate with the open access week celebrated all over the world. MyLISA participated in its own small way in this world event. This lecture was attended by professionals from Bangalore and Mysore. An email alert about the significance of the week was sent to all the MyLISA members. The valediction program of MyLISA OPENS was held on December 1, 2013. Prof. Mallinath Kumbar of the Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore was the guest of honour and Sri E.C. Ningaraju, Academic Council Member of University of Mysore and also the Librarian, Administrative Training Institute, Mysore was the Guest of Honour. The President of Mahajana Educational Institute Sri R. Vasudeva Murthy presided over the function. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Associate Professor, Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, and also Secretary, MyLISA, Mysore spoke at length about the program. Sri S. National Vitrual Library plan gets Union Cabinet nod An ambitious scheme aimed at creating a National Virtual Library, which is to be a comprehensive database of digital resources in the country, today received the government's nod. The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs gave its approval to the Ministry of Culture proposal to upgrade public libraries as part of theNational Mission on Libraries<http://www.business-standard.com/search?type=news&q=National+Mission+On+Lib…> (NML). The scheme, which would benefit researchers, scientists, artists, students, children, differently-abled persons, the general public and neo and non-literates, would entail an expenditure of Rs 400 crore during the 12th Plan period. This would be facilitated in an open- access environment, a statement said. The scheme would develop six libraries under the Ministry of Culture, 35 state central libraries and 35 district libraries as model libraries, with particular emphasis on economically-backward districts. The scheme intends to prepare baseline data of libraries in India through a quantitative and qualitative survey of 5,000 libraries. It also proposes to enhance the professional competence of library personnel. For setting up of the model libraries, existing libraries would be identified in consultation with state governments with a view to improving their infrastructure and upgrading the technology used by them. Celebrating 30 Years Of The Domain Name System (DNS) This Month!

Thirty years ago this month, in November 1983, two RFCs were published that defined the criticalInternet service that we now take for granted and use every day – the Domain Name System or more generally just “DNS”. Those two RFCs, authored by Paul Mockapetris, were: · RFC 882: Domain Names – Concepts and Facilities · RFC 883: Domain Names – Implementation and Specification These two RFCs formed the basis for what was to become the DNS system we use today. There was a great amount of discussion in the early 1980′s around how to move beyond the flat naming convention used in the early “ARPA Internet”. Several proposals were out there that make for interesting reading today, including RFC 799, RFC 819 and RFC 830. As Paul Mockapetris relays in a video for the Internet Hall of Fame (IHOF) Internet timeline, his boss at the time, Jon Postel, asked Paul to look at the various ideas and come up with a proposal of his own for how it should work. The result was RFCs 882 and 883. Four years later, in November 1987, these two original RFCs (882 and 883) were then “obsoleted” by RFC 1034 and RFC 1035 in which Paul updated and expanded the original RFCs based on the experience of those four years in actually implementing DNS. These newer RFCs 1034 and 1035 are still the basis of DNS today, although they have been “updated” many times since, including by the addition of DNSSEC in RFCs 4033, 4034 and 4035. Today the DNS is a critical part of our Internet infrastructure and is the serviceguiding us in connecting to all the other services we use across the Internet. We all use DNS all the time every day even though, as Paul Mockapetris wrote earlier this year, we may not even be aware thatwe are using DNS. OCLC Research launches Scholars' Contributions to VIAF activity

This activity explores the benefits of collaborating with scholars to enrich the Virtual International Authority File (VIAF) with new names from scholarly communities and additional script forms. VIAF combines multiple name authority files into a single OCLC-hosted name authority service that is freely available on the Web. Most VIAF contributors to date have been national librariesand other library agencies. However, scholars have a stronger affiliation with their discipline than with any one institution. And although scholarly projects are often international in scope, some minority languages do not have an agency such as a national library committed to supporting their documentation needs. To explore the benefits of collaborating with scholars to enrich VIAF, OCLC Research has launched a Scholars Contribution to VIAF activity that provides a path that domain experts can use to contribute their research in the form of authority data to enrich the information already in VIAF. Contributing their authority data to VIAF will benefits scholars by: * providing them with a resource for disseminating their scholarly research on names beyond their own communities make to libraries and researchers around the globe * giving them the ability to contribute names to VIAF in scripts that are not represented in the MARC 21 character set used in the LC/NACO Authority File, since VIAF supports Unicode * generating VIAF uniform resource identifiers (URIs) as persistent identifiers for the names contributed that scholars can use in their own databases, linked data applications, scholarly discourse, and name disambiguation in multinational collaborations. In addition, both scholarly societies and libraries will benefit from this activity because it will enrich VIAF with name authority data that would not otherwise be contributed by national libraries. It will also increase the number of "alternate names" associated with VIAF clusters that include scholars' contributions with scripts that are not yet represented. The first set of personal names from a scholarly resource loaded into VIAF as part of this project are now live. Greek names from the Perseus Catalog hosted by Tufts University, an OCLC Research Library Partnership institution, are now available in VIAF in Greek and sometimesArabic script forms. The Perseus Catalog aims to provide access to at least one online edition of every major Latin and Greek author from antiquity to 600 CE. Adding the Greek, Arabic and other script forms of names in the Perseus Catalog enrich existing VIAF clusters that previously lacked them. The number of "alternate name forms" associated with VIAF clusters that include the Perseus Catalog's contributions has already increased, with scripts not yet represented. OCLC is eager to welcome VIAF contributions from other scholarly communities. The four experimental detectors at the facility, based at CERN, Europe's particle-physics laboratory near Geneva, Switzerland, collect some 25 petabytes of information each year. Storing the data is not a problem: hard drives are cheap and getting cheaper. The challenge is preserving knowledge that is less commonly stored - the software, algorithms and reference plots specific to each experiment. These often degrade or disappear with time, says Cristinel Diaconu of the Marseilles Centre for Particle Physics in France, who is chair of the international Data Preservation in Long Term Analysis in High Energy Physics (DPHEP) study group. Indian Statistical Institute Documentation Research and Training Centre Bangalore 560059 Seminar (4) 2012-14 eLearning Management System : A Critical Study Abstract The success of the e-learning paradigm observed in recent times has created a growing demand for e-learning systems in universities and other educational institutions, which has led to the development of a number of either commercial or open-source eLearning Management Systems (eLMS). What are those eLMS systems, or how they function? The present discussion initially highlights certain distinctive features of e-learning management systems. Basically the idea of adaptive e-learning is being facilitated through the use, implementation and installation of various open source or commercial software. Such software for their operation requires specific platforms. Because of multiplicity of platforms and approaches for systems implementation, it becomes increasingly difficult to manage or compare them. Each new LMS presents its own learning model. How to compare different e-learning platforms, and on what basis to choose the most adequate one, is a task of ever increasing importance. Thus a comparative study has been made to enumerate the utility and effectiveness of e-learning software like Moodle, Sakai, ATutor, Caroline and Dokeos. However, with implementation of different eLMS modules certain barriers have evolved. Issues related to these barriers would be addressed in the concluding section of this discussion. Followings are the details of the appointment: 1. The appointment is purely temporary and contractual for three (3) months only. 2. The job for which these Trainees will be appointed is extremely data-intensive. Hence only hardworking and confident individuals should apply. 3. Desirable qualification is M.Lib.Sc. However individuals with B.Lib.Sc and proven record of experience of data-intensive jobs will also be considered. 4. Preference will be given to those who have some experiences of work 4. Salary will be commensurate with the experience and qualification subject to a maximum of Rs 10,000/ per month. 8.
