G. Ramakrishnan is a professor of Electrical Engineering at Indian Institute of Science, Bangalore. He received his Ph.D. degree in 1989 in Biomedical Engineering from I.I.T Madras. He was selected as a Young Scientist in 1994. Dr. Ramakrishnan received Sir Andrew Watt Kay Young Researcher's Award in 1992 from the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons, Glasgow for outstanding work in the field of medical and biomedical sciences. He was the President of Biomedical Engineering Society of India from 2002 to 2008. He has publications in four different IEEE Transactions: Biomed. Eng.; Info. Technology in Biomedicine; Medical Imaging; and Audio, Speech, and Language Processing. His research areas include Neuro inspired Pattern Recognition, Machine Listening, Human Computer Interface Technologies, Medical and Document Image Processing, Online Handwriting Recognition, Indian Language Technology Solutions, Natural Language Processing. He has guided 25 research scholars so far. He is leading a national research consortium on “Recognition of online handwriting in Indian languages”. OCRs developed by him for Tamil, Kannada and Telugu have been used to convert more than 180 books to Braille books. The text to speech synthesis system developed by him for Tamil and Kannada is available as a web demo on his lab website. 1. I too agree with views expressed by Dr. Koteswara Rao & Dr. Guruprasad about the indecent remarks made by our professional colleague. If his concerns are about number of PhDs at a time from the same dept..., it is common and acceptable for universities to have collective Vivas.. it serves two purpose.. on one hand it is economy to university and on the other it assures more participation from audience. Presenting doctoral findings and defending in front of larger audience is definitely a welcoming trend. This is more encouraging for research scholars to see more people rather than negligible number as audience. 2. If Mr. Bhaktavatsala's anger is about number of candidates from same guide... there is every possibility that the thesis might have been submitted at different point of time and viva might have been scheduled together for convenience. It may also happen that all the candidates might have registered at the same time and naturally the submission might have happened simultaneously. With University's time schedule for doctoral work, most of them might stick to complete the research within the given time. If registration happens at time, submissions also may happen at the same time. 3. If his concern is about how one can guide all candidates together, research work is based on work progress by individual researchers. If candidates do their homework properly, definitely a guide can supervise many together. 4. if his concerns are due to personal grievances against individual researcher our guide... professionals should not use public platform to express their anger or throw mud on other. The blames reflect the mindset of a complaining person against an individual or department. 5. along with others I too request all our esteemed LIS professionals that " let us exhibit our behavior more professionally and uphold the value of our profession" our criticisms on own profession pulls us down and we become laughing issue for others. I feel, collective presentations will benefit researchers, audience as well as University. Knowingly or unknowingly, Mr. Bhaktavatsala made members to read mails and express their feelings. Launch of Indian Conference-Abstracting Database (ICon-AD) [beta]

Dear all, Wishing you all a Happy New Year. We deem it our privilege to launch ICon-AD (Indian Conference-Abstracting Database-Beta Version), one of the non-profit national projects of our Library and Information Centre. The ICon-AD archives abstracts (of the papers) submitted to various Indian conferences. Indeed, we got an overwhelming response to our project even before the launch of the same!!. Seventeen colleges/universities have already shared their conference abstracts with ICon-AD. The list of Participating Institutes comprises the institutes like TISS, University of Mumbai, Tripura University, National Law University, MET, etc. The database is built on DSpace with the ICon-AD's official website. So far, we have archived 615 abstracts (of 17 Indian conferences) penned by 872 authors. More than 30 Project-Volunteers have directly and indirectly helped us in archiving the abstracts. Any academic/non-academic institute can participate in this project by sharing the abstracts received at the time of organising the conference/s. Petition by Indian Association of Special Libraries and Information Centres (IASLIC)<http://www.change.org/organizations/indian_association_of_special_libraries…> ------------------------------ Dear Sir We all are aware that the Working Group on Libraries under National Knowledge Commission (NKC) in its Report to the Nation (2006-2009) entitled “Libraries: Gateway to Knowledge – A Roadmap for Revitalization” recommended the formation of Indian Institute of Library and Information Science (IILIS) of national importance along with other nine major recommendations on libraries. In pursuance of this, a High Level Committee National Mission on Libraries (NML) had been set up by the Government of India. It was extremely heartening to us (IASLIC) with the hope that this NML would give due importance in implementing all ten major recommendations including setting up the Indian Institute of Library and Information Science (IILIS) of national importance which, as a nodal body, would give a vital direction to LIS education, research and practice for both high speed generation and use of knowledge needed for brining a structural change in Indian economy. IASLIC demands that the IILIS is absolutely the need of the hour for the LIS profession of Library and Information Science to fulfill its role as a corner stone of the knowledge society. I am sure; all of our fellow professionals bear the same feelings in their heart. But unfortunately NML has not taken yet any positive step to this effect. At least we could not find any such prominent effort on the part of NML. Thus we, on behalf of IASLIC, wrote to the Hon’ble Prime Minister expressing our grievance in this regard and also approached to Dr Barun Mukherjee, Hon’ble MP (Rajya Shabha) to help Library Professionals of India. IASLIC is ever grateful to Dr Mukherjee for taking up this matter and also for putting forward a demand in the Parliament on August 14, 2013. *“Dr Barun Mukherjee (West Bengal) : Sir, I would urge upon the Minister of Culture to set up a National Institute of Library and Information Science as is being demanded by thousands of library professionals and has been recommended by the National Knowledge Commission (NKC) constituted in 2005 initiated by the Prime Minister and headed by Mr Sam Pitroda. The Working Group of Libraries under NKC in its Report entitled “Libraries: Gateway to Knowledge – A Roadmap for revitalization” recommended in 2006 the formation of Indian Institute of Library and Information Science of national importance.* *With the growing technological development and advancement in research and studies, library and information science have assumed added importance. To feed the need of expertise for the purpose, a national institute for studies, research and training is essential, which we are lacking till now, particularly in the field of public library. Although LIS courses up to Post Graduate and Ph D levels are offered in many of the universities, overall guiding model at the national level is yet to be developed. NKC has, therefore, recommended NILIS as a nodal body. But this is yet to be implemented by the Government. Even it is not known whether the recommendation has been rejected, and, if so, why? Many of the books and periodicals did not have paper or digital records. Booksellers and collectors in Turkey bought the National Library books for between 15 and 50 Turkish liras per kilogram. ($7.00 - $23.50 at today's exchange rate per kilogram; just over 2 pounds). The corruption was detected by the National Library when an historical book with the National Library's stamp was sold to the Konya Manuscripts Library<http://www.islamicmanuscript.org/inst.aspx?id=214> . Roughly 102 tons of books were sent to the Library's waste department in 2007; another 45 tons of similar books were sent at a later date. The waste department then opened a secret auction for the books, selling them off by the kilogram to booksellers and collectors. The Daily Hürriyet, who reported the scandal, went hunting for exlibris books from the National Library in the secondhand market in Ankara, where the library is located. The newspaper found several books with the National Library stamp, two from the 19th century and one from the ealry 20th century, priced between 400 and 1000 Turkish Lira. ($188 - $470) Culture and Tourism Minister Ömer Çelik said via his Twitter account, "The National Library is the memory of the national culture and is the institution that bridges us with the international culture. It should be protected cautiously. It will be protected determinedly." Çelik went on to say, "It seems that the neglect has links to some interests groups outside. We will crack down on these." Dear All, At the outset & as a proud alumni of Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore (UoM), I would like to congratulate both Prof. Shalini Urs and Prof. Khaiser Nikam for being wonderful guides and also congratulate all the five proud PhD scholars Dr. Bhoj Raju; Dr. Jaykumara; Dr. Devendra; Dr. Vinod Kumar & Smt. Shanaz for their back breaking work . Both the professors who have served MyDLIS for more than 3 decades and have contributed to the LIS Intellectual out put. The PhD scholars are very fortunate to have got nicely trained under them, which is going to pay rich dividends in their career in time to come. I am saying this based on my personal experience. I think MyDLIS has created history and its an unusual scholarly event at MyDLIS in Nov' & Dec'13. Its a proud moment that out of five PhDs awarded, four students in a row are guided by Prof. Khaiser Nikam, Chairperson, Board of Studies, University of Mysore. As a PhD student of Prof. Nikam,I feel it is very hard to get her approval for the work we do, as she always insists in taking utmost care of not only the subject content but also proper English usage. Students working under her need not worry about English corrections and subject matter, which both she is a good at. She never compromises on the quality . If we look at the titles of theses and names of eminent external examiner like Prof.B S Maheshwarappa, it goes with out saying that the works are up to International Standards. Similar is the experience with Prof. Shalini Urs , who would always want us to do little more work, when ever she gave her observations at the time of Pre - theses submission colloquium. The work carried out by PhD students should be greatly useful to the society at large. It should not be confined to the departmental development and student growth. Tail Piece !!! Just now I reliably learnt that there will not be any need for library professionals to pass NET or do PhD as the UGC is going to treat them as administrators. Varying discount rate: is it corruption?

I observed that same suppliers provide different discount rates in different Libraries, the discount rates varies from 10% to 25%. This is time for academic libraries to subscribe journals for next calendar year. Most of the libraries already received letters and mails from various publishers to subscribe their journals. But my suggestion to my fellow librarians is that don’t subscribe blindly on seeing titles of journals like “International Journal of ” ”Research Journal of” ,some fake publishers cheating with this kind of titles. Before subscribing a journals please check following factors. 1. Impact factor /ranking of journal 2. Whether Articles are Peer viewed or not 3. Institutional publisher or commercial publisher 4. Check the editor board their background 5.
