The IIT Delhi is looking for young, enthusiastic, dynamic and fresh graduates/postgraduates with minimum First Class in Masters in Library and Information Science/Bachelors inLibrary and Information Science/Two years Diploma in Library Science to work as 'Library Internee' for its Central Library. Dear All As most of you must be knowing that Tolani College of Commerce, Mumbai has successfully organised a Two- Days National Conference on Digital Libraries: Reshaping Traditional Libraries into Next Generation Libraries during 16th to 17th January 2014. The Brief Report of the same is being available herewith for your reference and information. CONFERENCE REPORT: 1. INTRODUCTION: Tolani College of Commerce,Mumbai in collaboration with Raja Rammohun Roy Library Foundation, (Ministry of Culture, Govt. of India) organized a Two days National Conference on Digital Libraries: Reshaping Traditional Libraries into next Generation Libraries (NCDL-2014) at Mumbai during 16th and 17th January 2014. The conference was planned with an aim to provide a platform to enable interaction among the participants to discuss on the topic of digital libraries and all other available related emerging technologies, their future implications towards shaping information paradigm to bridge the digital divide through knowledge sharing and to provide an opportunity to identify the strength and gaps in the library system to suggest new models, policies and mechanisms for reshaping the traditional Libraries into next generation libraries. The Conference was structured into Keynote Address; Invited Talks followed by five thematic Sessions and one Panel discussion on the theme “Reshaping Traditional Libraries into Next Generation Libraries”. More than eighty participants from different parts of the country have participated in the event. 2 INAUGURAL SESSION The inaugural function of the conference was blessed with the lighting of lamp by the dignitaries. Prof. S. Parthasarathy, Formerly Director and Scientist-In charge, INSDOC, New Delhi as Chief Guest, Prof. S.C. Powdwal, HOD, SHPT School of Library Science, SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai, as Guest of Honor , Dr. Daulat Jotwani, Librarian, IIT Bombay as Key note speaker, Dr. Ranjit Kumar Das, Asst. Librarian, IIT Bombay as Rapporteur General and Dr. A. A. Rashid, Principal, Tolani College of Commerce has graced the occasion. 2.1 Welcome Address: Dr. A. A Rashid, Principal, Tolani College of Commerce delivered the Welcome address in which he emphasized that “technology has so advanced that almost everything is available on internet and this is the google generation. So the potentiality of the libraries has to be proved by the librarians by keeping themselves and their libraries up to date.” 2.2 Briefing of the Conference: Ms. Rasmita Mohanty, Organizing Secretary briefed about the National Conference. In her briefings she highlighted “Library plays a crucial role in fostering knowledge for the development of the society. They are the major role players in the threshold of information dissemination activity dealing with organization, storage, retrieval and dissemination of information thus satisfying user expectations. But the information explosion and ICT revolution has created a major challenge for the library system to deal with the changing expectation of the user mass and availability of information in several places in several forms. To keep pace with this phenomenon ICT application into library services has emerged and the emergence of ICT and its application in Library and Information Centers has revamped library services. Digital Libraries are the outcome of extensive research and development in the field of ICT and its application into library and information centers for enhanced services because in a technology driven world the libraries have to switch themselves from Traditional Libraries to Next Generation Libraries based on the need of the hour philosophy. 2.3 Address by Guest of Honor: Prof. S.C. Powdwal Guest of Honor has addressed the Library professionals as the trustee of knowledge in digital era. She has strongly recommended for sharing of knowledge through library automation. Library must collect the good ideas and suggestions from the users in shape of feedback to make the library more useful for the potential users. 2.4 Presidential Address: Prof. S. Parthasarathy Formerly Director and Scientist-In charge, INSDOC, New Delhi, delivered the presidential address as the CHIEF GUEST. He spoke about “Role of ICT in modernizing the library services in digital era” which has really enlightened the participants to a large extent.. In his thought provoking speech, he emphasized Access to Knowledge and the Importance of Reshaping Traditional Libraries into Next Generation Libraries for the user community in the digital era and the theme of the conference is very well suited to the present day situations. Ms. Rasmita Mohanty proposed the Vote of thanks. 2.5 KEYNOTE ADDRESS Dr Daulat Jotwani, Libraian of IIT Bombay delivered the Key Note address in which he discussed about the Guttenberg project, IPR and copy right, Licensing agreement for electronic resources, plagiarism software etc. 3. Plenary Session: There were a plenary session on the 2nd day of the conference and the theme of the plenary session was “Reshaping Traditional Libraries into Next Generation Libraries”. Prof. S. Parthsarathy, Prof. S. C. Podwal, Prof. Pratibha Gokhale, Mr. Shriram Pandey and Dr. Ranjit Kumar Das were the panelist. Two recommendations were emerged out of the discussion viz. the LIS professionals needs to equip themselves with the emerging technologies and secondly the LIS curriculum should be redesigned by keeping in mind the cutting edge technologies and changing environments in which UGC should take up the charge to promulgate an unified syllabus for all the Indian Universities imparting LIS education. 4 VALEDICTORY Dr. A. A Rashid, Principal Tolani College of Commerce, Mumbai delivered the concluding remarks. He felt that the whole two days deliberations, Panel discussion would enhance the awareness, enthusiasm and knowledge of the audience in implementing digital libraries and new technologies. Prof. S. Parthasarathy delivered the presidential address and Dr. Ranjit Kumar Das had given the Rapporteur General’s presentation of the Conference. After two days-long successful deliberation, the event concluded with a vote of thanks proposed by Ms. Rasmita Mohanty, the Organizing Secretary. This was illustrated on Sunday when this writer checked the same with Prof Achuthsankar S Nair, Director, State Inter-University Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Government of Kerala and Dr Iyemperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu State Science and Technology Centre. Both of them expressed their helplessness even though both of them handle hundreds of email messages per day. It is a 14-year-old boy from India and that too with roots in Tamil Nadu who invented email as well as the five-letter word which has become synonymous with communication. VA Shiva Ayyadurai, hardly out of school in New Jersey, ushered in the paperless era into this world. It was in response to a challenge thrown at him by Dr Leslie P Michelson, Director, High Performance Computing Lab, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), in Newark, New Jersey, which made little Shiva create the world's first email system in November 1978. ?The UMDNJ was a big campus connected by a wide area computer network. The computer was in its initial stages of being used in the office environment. Dr Michelson wanted me to create an electronic version of the interoffice mail system so that the entire staff of doctors, secretaries, students and staff could communicate faster. At that time, secretaries and staff were performing drafting, typing, copying, hand delivering of the entire paper-based mail. By observing the interoffice mail system, I created a parts list: Inbox, Outbox, Memo, Folders, Address Book, Attachments, and then created a computer programme of nearly 50,000 lines of computer code which replicated this entire system. I called my innovation ?email?, a term that had never been used before. The world?s first email I sent was to Dr Michelson in November 1978,? Dr Ayyadurai told The Pioneer on Sunday. Dr Ayyadurai developed email as a software programme. ?Software itself was a new concept then. In 1978, it was not even covered under the Intellectual Property Rights. The US Copyright Law of 1976 was amended, however, in 1980 to allow for the protection of software. In 1982, I was awarded the first US Copyright for ?Email?, recognising me as the inventor of email by the US Government,? said Dr Ayyadurai, who holds four different Post Graduate degrees including a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. ?What you see in any email system today, the Inbox, Outbox, Address Book, the Memo (From, To, Date, Subject, Body, CC and BCC), Attachments, etc are based on my observations to replicate the interoffice mail system. In November 1978, as a 14-year-old school boy, I addressed the doctors of the University on what I invented and demonstrated the use of this entire system,? reminiscences Dr Ayyadurai, son of Vellayappa Ayyadurai, a chemical engineer hailing from Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu and Meenakshi, a mathematics teacher who went on to become the head of the elite Don Bosco Public School in Mumbai. The Ayyadurais migrated to the USA in 1970 in search of greater challenges so that little Shiva could get better education and exposure. He did not let his parents down. By the age of 13 he had mastered all known computer programming languages in vogue and went on to create email, which revolutionised the world of communication. Dr Ayyadurai has come out with a book The Email Revolution: Unleashing The Power of Connect which has foreword by Dr Leslie Michelson and an introduction by none other than Prof Noam Chomsky. He is in India as part of his mission to identify more ?Shivas? who have much better innovations to offer to the world. ?Young people of all colors, hungry to make this world a better place, are going to innovate things we?ve never imagined. We have to provide more global images to young people, in India, for example, with icons, beyond just white skinned and white haired, bearded scientists,? said Dr Ayyadurai. And how many of us are aware of the fact that radio was invented by Prof Jagdish Chandra Bose? It was his failure to get it patented that cost Dr Bose the title. Marconi, who had seen Dr Bose?s public demonstration of the radio, had approached him with an irresistible offer to market the same. But Dr Bose wanted the radio to be used for the welfare of the humanity. The night he held the public demonstration, his equipment was robbed from his hotel room. The rest is history,? Prof Ranjit Nair, leading physicist, had told this writer. So, today we all think Marconi, an Italian, invented Radio. But, when it comes to email, it's time to set the record straight, once and for all ? it was a boy, a 14-year-old Indian boy, who invented email. Anybody have tried Invenio digital library software?

Dear Friends, I am trying to install Invenio (https://invenio-software.org/) digital library software. I failed in the first two attempts. I stuck with last few commands in the detailed installation manual. I would like to know anybody have successfully installed this software before? Invenio digital library seems useful and rich with many good features. Here is a brief description about the software from the home page, Invenio has been originally developed at CERN to run the CERN document server, managing over 1,000,000 bibliographic records in high-energy physics since 2002, covering articles, books, journals, photos, videos, and more. Invenio is being co-developed by an international collaboration comprising institutes such as CERN, DESY, EPFL, FNAL, SLAC and is being used by about thirty scientific institutions worldwide. This was illustrated on Sunday when this writer checked the same with Prof Achuthsankar S Nair, Director, State Inter-University Centre of Excellence in Bioinformatics, Government of Kerala and Dr Iyemperumal, Executive Director, Tamil Nadu State Science and Technology Centre. Both of them expressed their helplessness even though both of them handle hundreds of email messages per day. It is a 14-year-old boy from India and that too with roots in Tamil Nadu who invented email as well as the five-letter word which has become synonymous with communication. VA Shiva Ayyadurai, hardly out of school in New Jersey, ushered in the paperless era into this world. It was in response to a challenge thrown at him by Dr Leslie P Michelson, Director, High Performance Computing Lab, University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey (UMDNJ), in Newark, New Jersey, which made little Shiva create the world's first email system in November 1978. “The UMDNJ was a big campus connected by a wide area computer network. The computer was in its initial stages of being used in the office environment. Dr Michelson wanted me to create an electronic version of the interoffice mail system so that the entire staff of doctors, secretaries, students and staff could communicate faster. At that time, secretaries and staff were performing drafting, typing, copying, hand delivering of the entire paper-based mail. By observing the interoffice mail system, I created a parts list: Inbox, Outbox, Memo, Folders, Address Book, Attachments, and then created a computer programme of nearly 50,000 lines of computer code which replicated this entire system. I called my innovation ‘email’, a term that had never been used before. The world’s first email I sent was to Dr Michelson in November 1978,” Dr Ayyadurai told The Pioneer on Sunday. Dr Ayyadurai developed email as a software programme. “Software itself was a new concept then. In 1978, it was not even covered under the Intellectual Property Rights. The US Copyright Law of 1976 was amended, however, in 1980 to allow for the protection of software. In 1982, I was awarded the first US Copyright for ‘Email’, recognising me as the inventor of email by the US Government,” said Dr Ayyadurai, who holds four different Post Graduate degrees including a PhD from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. “What you see in any email system today, the Inbox, Outbox, Address Book, the Memo (From, To, Date, Subject, Body, CC and BCC), Attachments, etc are based on my observations to replicate the interoffice mail system. In November 1978, as a 14-year-old school boy, I addressed the doctors of the University on what I invented and demonstrated the use of this entire system,” reminiscences Dr Ayyadurai, son of Vellayappa Ayyadurai, a chemical engineer hailing from Rajapalayam in Tamil Nadu and Meenakshi, a mathematics teacher who went on to become the head of the elite Don Bosco Public School in Mumbai. The Ayyadurais migrated to the USA in 1970 in search of greater challenges so that little Shiva could get better education and exposure. He did not let his parents down. By the age of 13 he had mastered all known computer programming languages in vogue and went on to create email, which revolutionised the world of communication. Dr Ayyadurai has come out with a book The Email Revolution: Unleashing The Power of Connect which has foreword by Dr Leslie Michelson and an introduction by none other than Prof Noam Chomsky. He is in India as part of his mission to identify more “Shivas” who have much better innovations to offer to the world. “Young people of all colors, hungry to make this world a better place, are going to innovate things we’ve never imagined. We have to provide more global images to young people, in India, for example, with icons, beyond just white skinned and white haired, bearded scientists,” said Dr Ayyadurai. And how many of us are aware of the fact that radio was invented by Prof Jagdish Chandra Bose? It was his failure to get it patented that cost Dr Bose the title. Marconi, who had seen Dr Bose’s public demonstration of the radio, had approached him with an irresistible offer to market the same. But Dr Bose wanted the radio to be used for the welfare of the humanity. The night he held the public demonstration, his equipment was robbed from his hotel room. The rest is history,” Prof Ranjit Nair, leading physicist, had told this writer. So, today we all think Marconi, an Italian, invented Radio. But, when it comes to email, it's time to set the record straight, once and for all — it was a boy, a 14-year-old Indian boy, who invented email. The President and the Trustees of the Satinder Kaur Ramdev Memorial Trust for Advancement of Librarianship (SATKAL) presented various SATKAL awards for the year 2013 on 22 February 2014 on the occasion of the 59thInternational Conference of the Indian Library Association (ILA) at Indian Institute of Technology (IIT), Roorkee (Uttarakhand). SATKAL was founded by an NRI, Prof. Jaginder Singh Ramdev, in the year 2000 in the sweet memory of his wife Mrs. Satinder Kaur Ramdev. This is perhaps the only trust in India that encourages and motivates library and information professionals by giving various awards annually. At the award ceremony, Citations of the award recipients were readout, and a Shawl, a Plaque, and a citation were presented to each of the recipients by the trustees. In addition to the observation of behavior, learning also occurs through the observation of rewards and punishments. While formal education is appreciated, the ICT enabled world provides ample scope for de-schooling the societal processes of learning. Cybernetics provides integrated behavioral and cognitive theories of learning in order to provide a comprehensive model that could account for the wide range of learning experiences that occur in the real world. About: Norbert Wiener & Programmes in honour of him: Father of Cybernetics, Norbert Wiener (November 26, 1894 - March 18, 1964) was an American mathematician and philosopher. He was Professor of Mathematics at MIT. Wiener is considered the originator of cybernetics, a formalization of the notion of feedback, with implications for engineering, systems control, computer science, biology, philosophy, and the organization of society. This lecture is based on the works of Norbert Wiener. Dr. T. V. Gopal has organized two one - day events in honor of Norbert Wiener at ISI, Kolkatta and IIIT, Allahabad. Such challenges cannot be solved without multidisciplinary and transdisciplinary research, as well as the collection, sharing, integration, use, and stewardship of data across scientific disciplines and domains, and from international sources. The effectiveness and credibility not only of research but also proposed solutions will be highly dependent on the availability of well-documented, quality-assessed, and timely scientific datasets.
