Speaking on the sidelines of the event, writer Narahalli Balasubramanya said "We should ensure children emulate great minds if we want them to be responsible citizens. This is possible only if we make them read good books. Today, we are increasingly finding ourselves in the company of corrupt people. It is through books that we can interact with great literary figures such as Bendre and Kuvempu." The event was jointly organised by Karnataka Publishers Association, Kendra Sahitya Akademi, Karnataka Lekhakiyara Sangha and Indian Institute of World Culture. Balasubramanya maintained that the Kendra Sahitya Academy sold books at affordable rates and also gave a funding of Rs 400 crore to the book publishers, annually. "But not many people are aware of books entering market and the works don't reach people," he added. A series of Kannada works written by authors were released on the occasion. Writer Dr Siddalingaiah who released the books said "Books are bridges between our minds and our ancestors' minds. Every home should have a small library." 'Pustaka Bhagya' "The State government has introduced Anna Bhagya, Ksheera Bhagya and other schemes. Similarly, they should also implement Pustaka Bhagya," said M V Nagaraj Rao of Shrungara Prakashana. Technical writer in Kannada U B Pavanaja maintained that in Kannada Wikipedia there was dearth of information on Kannada literary works. "There is enough information about English works but not on Kannada novels and literary publications. The Kannada publishers should strive to feed information and synopsis of each work into the Kannada wikipedia," he added. Public Library Department celebrated the occasion by holding a book exhibition and essay competition for children at City Central Library premises on Wednesday. Discovery of a Genius True Librarian

Dear All, First time in my professional career i have discovered/Met a Genius Library professional who is not having a single degree of Library science but having much talent and knowledge in comparison to many big degree holders including myself who posts some useless topics in forums. Please note my intention is not to criticize any one but only to promote such professionals so that others could learn something from them. He ( https://www.facebook.com/wisdombooks ) has registered for our workshop and send me friend request on facebook, i was thinking that the person is having a high qualifications in LIS because of his age (above 60) and the devotion for LIS. During our discussions on facebook he invited for Excel data conversion for Koha at his institute (Bhaktivedanta Research Centre, Kolkatta) but on volunteer basis. My self and My colleague Mr. D.P. Tripathi agreed and he send his complex data in excel format because we never seen such standard data maintained in excel. The job of conversion was very challenging but we did successfully and went kolkata at midnight 11:30 PM, he picked us and we went to his Small library which was maintained perfectly and neatly almost independently. We were surprised to see all modern equipments as well as latest and old collection of manuscripts, examples of technical preservation of original papers to digital preservation methods, use of technology for w! orking comfortably with accuracy and speed etc. After visit of library we sat and asked for his degree and socked to here that he had taken admission in IGNOU but could not complete B.lib/M.lib due to some personal reasons. Then we started some technical discussions about the library technologies and simultaneously i was thinking that he may not be aware about those but surprised when he discussed and replied about all those technologies and tools. We found almost all tools and technology in such a small library including high end scanner (Bookeye4). Due to some complexity in data migrations it took much time and we had to catch our Flight also at 3:00 AM early morning for Assam Univ. Silchar, we were very tired but not seen a single sign of tiredness on his face and sleepy even up to 3 o'clock but ultimately we success in data migration and system setup of koha. It is well accepted that honesty is the basic policy of academic or scientific writing. Unfortunately, the widely rampant lapse is plagiarism which occurs intentionally or unintentionally. As the issue of plagiarism is assuming greater concern, universities worldwide, are taking concerted efforts to deter, prevent and discipline plagiarism. The scholars or researchers in academic world are expected to adhere to the highest standards of academic honesty and integrity and avoid all forms of writing which can be considered as plagiarism. Plagiarism has been defined as taking someone else’s words, ideas and passing them off as one’s own. It is an act of using the language and thoughts of others without acknowledging them. It tantamount to misappropriation, infringement, piracy, counterfeiting or academic theft or fraud. There are ten most common types of plagiarism , as mentioned on the website ofplagiarism.org,which are listed as follows: clone: Submitting another’s work, word-for-word, as one’s own; CTRL-C has significant portions of text from a single source without alterations ; Find – replace -changes key words and phrases but retains the essential content of the source; Remix - Paraphrases from multiple sources, made to fit together; Recycle borrows generously from the writer’s previous work without citation; Hybrid Combines perfectly cited sources with copied passages without citation; Mash up - mixes copied material from multiple sources; 404 error- includes citations to non-existent or inaccurate information about sources; Aggregator includes proper citation to sources but the paper contains almost no original work; Re-tweet Includes proper citation, but relies too closely on the text’s original wording and/or structure. Spotlighting the causes at times the (pseudo) researchers may lack complete understanding of the subject as a result may be hesitant to undertake original research writing. The researchers may be unaware of the importance of academic honesty and publishing ethics. They may be ignorant of the consequences which may befall them when they get caught. At times, the researchers may be tempted to take short cuts and end up plagiarising. They may lack the ability to express their views in their own language. They may lack the ability to quote, paraphrase and summarize the sources. The researchers may not be proficient in assimilating and integrating the views of other scholars in their own writings. They may be unaware of the immense relevance of the references and citations and how to list them, which they have consulted and used. Citations and references are the notations in the text of a paper which identify the source of the authors’ claims, other research and theories mentioned in the paper. References serve as a pivotal link in the scholarly communication which enable the readers to investigate in more depth the details of a given thought or idea. Self-plagiarism is considered equally unacceptable in academic world. It is copying material which one has previously contributed and published and projecting it as new contribution and getting it published. It is an act of literary theft and is prolific in the scholarly world. Self-plagiarism is considered unethical because the journal space is exceptionally limited, where researchers compete with one another to get published after passing through rigorous process of peer review. The editors and referees have to spend considerable time in screening and evaluating the authors’ manuscripts. If the same manuscript is submitted twice it leads to duplication of content, efforts and dissipation of energy. Objectives The workshop is unique, first-of-its-kind in India, which aims to be a platform for discussion, knowledge sharing on issue of plagiarism which is highly relevant to all the stakeholders of scholarly communication. The workshop will have eminent experts from industry, academia, law as resource persons, library professionals who have been early adopters of tools and technologies which are used to detect and prevent plagiarism. Inauguration of KLA Centre for Professional Development (KLA-CPD)

Dear Professionals, Kerala Library Association (KLA) has formally opened an intensive training centre with all modern IT facilities, the KLA Centre for Professional Development (KLA-CPD), on the premises of KLA Head Quarters, Thiruvananthapuram, on 12th April 2014. Dr J. Rajan, Prof. & Head, Institute of Management in Kerala (IMK), University of Kerala, inaugurated the Centre. Dr. A. Gopikttan, President, KLA presided over. Shri Binu K. John, Organizing Secretary, KLA, welcomed the participants and Shri S. L. Faisal, Member, EC, KLA, offered vote of thanks. Hello Parinita Samant and Other Professionals, I have some suggestions for increasing usage of E-Books by users accessing through Institutional IP range and/or when they are outside (residence, hostels, outstation including abroad). Some of the steps we took at UoM, increased usage of all E-resources geometrically (including E-books). Basically it is the question of effective ERM (Selection, acquisition, organisation, marketing, access and services). Few suggestions will address your specific query also. 1. First of all selection of e-books should be users driven and not vendor/publishers driven (Pick and Choose Model rather than bundled offers). 2. If possible negotiate for supply of one copy of print versions of the books licensed. 3. Prefer perpetual ownership purchase model. Even aggregators, marketing and giving access to e-books of many publishers facilitate perpetual access. 4. One can depend upon publishers' platform both for searching and accessing full texts. Second option is to get both full texts of books and metadata, use institutional server and software commercial or OSS to be on our own. Usually publishers won't give their concerned software to be uploaded on our server. 5. IMPORTANT: We at UOM, apart from giving links to publishers' platforms, have collected MARC records of e-books purchased from different publishers and uploaded on our Library OPAC. This facilitates our users to search not only both print and e-books simultaneously, but allows us to search e-books of our interest across different publishers at one go. The PDF links given take us to the contents page of the book we want from publishers site, from where one can download the full texts. This will also avoid noise, as publishers platforms throw more books not licensed than the ones licensed by us. What ever hits we get through our OPAC, we are sure of having full texts. You may like to visit our OPAC (http://libcatmysore-koha.informindia.co.in/) One can restrict the search to print or e-books or search both at one go. We have also accessioned e-books using different codes, say EBSP for Springer E-books. If we search by EBSP in the field Barcode under Advanced Search, the OPAC will list all Springer books. One can use this for searching books on a subject by a particular publisher like Wiley, T & F, CRC Press, etc. 6. The new developments like Federation Systems like FEDGATE of Informatics (India) and Discovery Service of EBSCO also give good solutions to give access to both in-house and external contents/collections. 7. Access from outside: One can use OCLC's Ezproxy or similar solutions to give authenticated access to our genuine users when they are out of our IP range without violating publishers interest. 8. MARKETING: Whatever may be technological solution, marketing/orientation/ awareness programs are a must to increase usage of any kind of e-resources. We at UoM conducted E-Resources awareness programs at each department and library multiple times, The other modes include display on notice boards, e-mail communications to all users, regular orientation programs for students during beginning of semesters and more than anything else informal awareness programs at our Digital Information Resource Centre, housing about 350 systems 9. During 2012, our usage of E-Resources of INFLIBNET/INFONET in terms of downloads was fantastic with 36% share of usage by 8 universities in Karnataka. Some of the Universities like JNU, Delhi University too have achieved a lot in terms of usage of e-resources. It is worth while, if they too share their ideas and strategies used. Last year focus energy limited Mahipalpur had called me for interview with some other candidates.The way they had conducted interview was really horrible and even the higher authority was interviewing us with hr,mechanics and other professionals together in a room. They were not followed interview ethics and standards. As they are called us for the post of librarian they must understand that its not a clerical post and a librarian is not their slave or subordinate. The manager who was interviewing did not know how to speak and behave with the candidates. Last they were only offering very nominal salary say 8000 or less for the post. So it is my humble submission to all the professionals please bring this type of issue into public forum and ban those organisations I think librarians are responsible for degrading their self respect and dignity by compromising their quality with low minimum salaries and standards. SO I REQUEST ALL OF YOU TO REJECT THIS ORGANISATION AND NEVER GO TO ATTEND INTERVIEW THERE THIS TIME AND IN FUTURE . ANOTHER CASE OF FRAUD IN SCIENCE Just as the chapter on Hwang Woo Suk, a South Korean stem cell researcher and one of the biggest known research fraudsters, came to an end recently, another major fraud by a Japan-based stem cell researcher has taken centre-stage. Two "path-breaking" papers published on January 30 in Nature by a team led by 30-year-old Haruko Obokata of the Riken Center for Developmental Biology in Kobe claimed to have made the process of reprogramming adult mice cells to pluripotent stem cells (capable of becoming any of the specialised adult tissue) very simple. Also, by being able to contribute to the formation of placental tissue, the pluripotent stem cells so produced were shown to be more versatile than even embryonic stem cells. But a torrent of questions on falsification, manipulation and duplication of images and plagiarism were raised days after the publication. Scientists were also unable to replicate the study in their labs; one of the co-authors of the papers failed in his attempts post-publication. With the papers and Ms. Obokata coming under intense scrutiny, researchers unearthed a few unethical practices in her thesis as well - about 20 pages of her thesis, completed in 2011, bear a striking similarity to information posted in the National Institutes of Health website. Also, two images used with one paper, produced through an experiment completely different from the published work, appear in her thesis. But the most damaging factor is that the two stem-cell lines produced from a particular strain of mouse have been found to come from different strains. Unfortunately, for a fraud of this magnitude, the investigation by a six-member committee constituted by the Riken Center did not measure up to the standards one would normally come to expect of such institutions. The scope of the examination was limited - only six issues concerning image manipulation and duplication and plagiarism were scrutinised but the core issue of examining the veracity of the study was skirted. While dismissing the four problems as "innocent errors," the committee judged the manipulation of an image and the use of an image from her doctoral thesis as deliberate attempts to falsify data. Though it has labelled her actions as "scientific misconduct," the committee has only confirmed what is abundantly clear. Unlike Riken, the Seoul National University did brilliantly in probing Mr. Hwang's case. With Nature yet to conclude its investigation, Ms. Obokata planning to appeal the judgment and another committee being set up to determine punishment, the last word has not been said. But Ms. Obokata has surely not read the journal's elaborate points of information for authors on the matter of image manipulation, which was added after the Hwang episode.
