Since its inception in 1969, IATLIS has been active in taking up several issues of LIS Education in India especially relating to the development of curriculum, teaching methods, infrastructure, teacher training, etc. It actively works for the promotion of the professional interests of LIS teachers. As part of its activities, it conducts national seminars and webinars, workshops, and training programmes. It publishes conference proceedings and also an electronic journal “IATLIS Journal of Library Education and Research”. In the year 1969 it was bifurcated into two full-fledged Universities: University of Kashmir at Srinagar and University of Jammu at Jammu. The University of Kashmir is situated at Hazratbal in Srinagar. It is flanked by the world famous Dal Lake on its eastern side and Nigeen Lake on the western side. The Main Campus of the University spread over 247 acres of land is divided into three parts – Hazratbal Campus, Naseem Bagh Campus and Mirza Bagh Campus (serving residential purpose). The city is well connected with major cities like Delhi, Chandigarh, Leh and Jammu. There is good Bus service and Cab service available. *About Srinagar City* The city has great attractions where people can visit during their stay in Kashmir. The Winter School presents six workshops to train information science professionals in developing their research skills through various tools and techniques for understanding social behavior, analyzing large datasets using tools and techniques such as Machine Learning, R, Word Vectors, Embeddings, Language, and Graphic Generative AI, Digital Wellness and Information Ethics. Each workshop's duration is six hours and will be conducted over two days with each session of three hours per day on specific topics. All sessions are virtual and synchronous. The workshops will be hosted on Zoom, between November 17 to December 12, 2023. The Zoom link will be sent 48-24 hours before the session. Friends, Here is an interesting article on how the removal of a journal from the list of journals indexed by WoS can affect its revenue (and its reputation among scientists) dramatically. https://scholarlykitchen.sspnet.org/2023/09/18/guest-post-reputation-and-pu… Unfortunately, for most scientists around the world, open access means OA through paying APC. Despite arXiv serving the physics (and other) communities rather well for more than 30 years, scientists, especially in India are reluctant to adopt self-archiving in institutional repositories or global archives. LIS professionals can, I believe, play a proactive role in making research in science and scholarship open and at a much a lower cost than through paying APC. With best wishes, Arun

One day in the life of a digital librarian

Friends, What does an award-winning librarian do at work? Here is a well-written account of a day in the life of an Indian digital librarian whom all of us in this Forum know. The feelings this 'one-day' story will evoke are very different from the feelings evoked by Alexandr Solzhenytsin's novel *One day in the life of Ivan Denisovich*, the story of a Soviet Union soldier who, on return from German captivity, was accused of being a spy. Karthik Ramaswamy's account of Dr Francis Jeyakanth, who soldiers on with his multiple responsibilities, would make all of us happy and proud. One of us, an Indian LIS professional has done so well, achieved so much, and done all that quietly, despite being in a junior position for most of his career. I am an accidental information professional. I was not trained in LIS or computer science. When I went to New Delhi to work in science publishing in my early twenties, honestly I didn't expect it would change my life. I am a small town guy and Delhi gave me a myriad of opportunities. My job was in science publishing; my office used to receive many overseas journals (which even large academic libraries might not have received then because of the foreign exchange crunch) on exchange for our journals. And INSDOC was housed in the same premises and they were building the National Science Library. I was in the midst of books, journals and trained librarians and trainees learning information science. The transition from a not-so promising chemist into information science newbie occurred without my knowing it. After a few months of living in a mess (where two or three people would share a 10' x10' room), I was welcomed into a bachelors' pad (a 2BHK flat + *barsati*) where already five young men were living along with their cook). Those were amazing guys, from different walks of life, very well informed, ever ready for a discussion or an outing. Probably I learnt more in their company than in many years of formal schooling. After all, it is not for nothing, they say, 'tell me who your friends are, I will tell you who you are.' It was in Delhi I met some of India's best LIS folks - Professors S Parthasarathy and T N Rajan (both of INSDOC), and some very good librarians -V Sarangan (CSIR) J S Raju, P Jeyarajan (both of the British Council Library). I also met a manager of a large publishing-cum-bookselling firm, P Sankaranarayaan (who was my classmate in my first year at college), and his firm's commissioning editor Mr Rajeshwar Rao Abburi. I also had some students in my class at INSDOC (where I taught one course for eight years), who were more knowledgeable than I was. Then on relocating to Bangalore, I came to know the work of Ratnakar, ARD Prasad and N V Sathyanarayana. I have been watching Dr Jeyakanth ever since I spent three months at NCSI as a visiting scholar in the mid-1990s. I must say I was impressed by his work and his work ethic. The Artificial Intelligence and Libraries Bibliography includes over 125 selected English-language articles and books that are useful in understanding how libraries are exploring and adopting modern artificial intelligence (AI) technologies. It covers works from January 2018 through August 2023. It includes a Google Translate link. The bibliography is available as a website and a website PDF with live links. Libraries have been exploring AI technology for a long time. In particular, there was an active period of experimentation from the mid-1980s through the mid-1990s that primarily focused on the use of expert systems. Many projects used expert system shells, which simplified development; however, some projects also used AI languages, such as Prolog. This period produced a significant number of library-related AI papers. Subsequently, library interest in AI diminished until around 2018, when research activity increased. The public release of generative AI systems in late 2022, such as ChatGPT, sparked a strong upsurge of interest in them and a rush to utilize their capabilities. Dr. Pushpa Mittra Bhargava (1928–2017) was an Indian scientist, writer, and administrator. He founded the Centre for Cellular and Molecular Biology (CCMB) in Hyderabad. He was the recipient of several awards, including the Padma Bhushan, for his distinguished service. The launch will include the exhibition of postal stamps, matchboxes, paintings, artifacts, and a selection of Bhargava's papers, which largely cover an exhibition he organized in the 1970s called 'Method of Science'. The launch event will include a panel discussion on the MOS exhibition. The panellists will include Chandana Chakrabarti, scientist, writer, and Joint Secretary of the Pushpa Mittra Bhargava Foundation; Gauhar Raza, former Professor at the Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research and Chief Scientist at the National Institute of Science Communication and Information Resources; Gita Chadha, a sociologist working on critical science studies; and Obaid Siddiqui Chair 2023-2024 at the National Centre for Biological Sciences. Friends, I just saw this brief article by Robert-Jan Smits. https://sciencebusiness.net/viewpoint/open-science/viewpoint-its-time-incre… The author is trying to defend and promote Plan S. In my view Plan S is a plan meant to perpetuate the hegemony (and obscene profit margins) of the publishing oligarchs at the cost of science and scientists. Scientists and taxpayers around the world, esp. the Global South, should steer clear of this evil plan and prefer achieving open access through the publicly peer-reviewed preprints route.
