It relates to a retired librarian who is making a mark, after formal retirement, putting all his skills of librarianship to serve the retirees, pensioners and senior citizens. Vyasamoorthy ====================== KLN Award The first KLN Award goes to: Dr. Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy ! Dr. Padmanabha Vyasamoorthy, a septuagenarian from Hyderabad, is a PhD in Library Science. During his pre-retirement career, he set up and ran libraries and Information centers for academic, research, and industrial organizations such as the Technical Teachers’ Training Institute, Madras, Informatics India, Bangalore, and Indian Detonators, Satyam Computers, and ICICI Knowledge Park, Hyderabad. Since retirement, Dr. Vyasamoorthy has been involved with Aging and Aged Care issues, and contributed extensively to the literature of social gerontology. He started and moderates a Yahoo group for senior citizens, SSS Global, that is currently ranked 1st in over 26,000 groups focused on seniors. Dr. Vyasamoorthy maintains multiple blogs, moderates multiple discussion groups, and edits two online dailies. He has written six e-books and numerous articles and papers. Dr. Vyasamoorthy maintains the websites for the Association of Senior Citizens of Hyderabad and All India Senior Citizens Confederation, where he also serves as an officer. Dr. Vyasamoorthy’s services to senior citizens were recognized by citation by the Government of Andhra Pradesh in 2007, and he was awarded the Silver Innings-iCONGO Karmaveer Chakra 2011 for Exceptional Work for Senior Citizens. Dr. Vyasamoorthy currently serves as President, Society for Serving Seniors, Secunderabad; President, Association of Senior Citizens, Hyderabad; Joint Secretary, Andhra Pradesh Senior Citizens Confederation; Joint Secretary. All India Senior Citizens Confederation; and Vice President, Senior Citizens Forum, Secunderabad. Dr. Vyasamoorthy has in the past served as Joint Secretary, Confederation of Cantonment Resident Welfare Associations in Secunderabad (CCRWAS) and as Vice President, Federation of Andhra Pradesh Senior Citizens Organizations. He is a member of the Alzheimer’s and Related Disorders Society of India (ARDSI), Hyderabad Deccan chapter, and the University of the Third Age (U3A India),. He also volunteers at Aasara, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation’s outreach effort to senior citizens. Dr. Vyasamoorthy retired around the same time as the internet was beginning to take off in the late 1990s, Google was in its infancy in a garage in California, and nobody had heard of “social media” since it had yet to take birth. Dr. Vyasamoorthy used all three, as they emerged, in effective ways to empower himself. He kept pace with technology, and through technology, with the forces changing the society around him. As an elder care activist, he used his skills, training, knowledge and expertise in technology to, in turn, disseminate to seniors, ideas, trends, and challenges that they were likely to encounter in a changing world. For his role as a social catalyst in the area of elder empowerment and elder care, we are pleased to award him the first KLN Award. Non-Functional School Libraries: Major Cause of Quality Reduction of Public Education in Kerala, Academic Library Association (ALA)

Dear professionals, Non-functional school libraries are the major cause of quality reduction in public education in Kerala, the Annual Conference of the Academic Library Association (ALA) held on 1st June 2014 at St. ThomasCollege, Thrissur evaluated. The conference also found that School libraries confined only in some shelves causes major quality reduction not only in school education but also in higher education. As a fruitful measure to save the Kerala Syllabus Schools, the meeting urged the government to renovate the libraries with all modern facilities and made functional by posting qualified library science teachers in all schools. As the role of libraries in student centred education is very high, all CBSE, ICSE and International schools have very good libraries with library education teachers of equal qualification and cadre of other subject teachers. These schools have library periods not less than one hour per week for teaching-learning through libraries. But state controlled schools did not have this provision which adversely affects the reading and learning capability of the pupil. At the time of Pre-Degree, students could use college libraries with better facilities. Now, even in higher secondary schools did not have any functional library facility with qualified librarian. Dear Professionals, A Workshop on Stock Verification and Loss of Books was organized by Mysore Librarians and Information Scientists Association (MyLISA), Mysore and Mysore University Library, University of Mysore, Mysore on Thursday May 29, 2014 at Mysore University Library,Mysore. The purpose of the workshop was to address the issues related stock verification, a regular event in libraries. In addition the workshop aimed to throw some light on decision making issues related to loss of books, mutilated books and weeding out of books from stock. There were 94 participants from various parts of Karnataka and neighboring states. In the first session, Dr. C. P. Ramasesh, Librarian, Mysore University Library, University of Mysore, Mysore spoke on 'Stock Verification: Processes, Procedures, Policies and Practices' stressed the need for following the 4 Ps of Stock Verification highlighting the need, advantages, guidelines/ orders pertaining to stock verification and loss of books as given by Ministry of Finance, Govt. of India, Dept. of Collegiate Education and other agencies. He explained the issues very effectively with real-life case studies taken from various institutions. Presentation of Stock Verification Report and Procedure for disposal and Weeding out of books were also discussed in detail. The second session on 'Stock Verification Simplified: using spreadsheets and other general purpose software' stressed on the technological aspects like use of Spreadsheets for conducting stock verification. Dr. N S Harinarayana, Associate Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore provided a demo on the use of various Spreadsheet functions for conducting stock verification using Microsoft Excel Spreadsheets. This was followed by a talk by Dr. Sunil M V, Librarian, SDM-IMD, Mysore who provided an overview of what one can expect from technology for smooth conduct of the stock verification process which was highly appreciated by the participants. The post lunch session was conducted by Mr. Keerthinarayana, of Ms. Barcode Systems and Consultancy who demonstrated the use of Barcodes. He gave a demo of various types of Barcode scanners, printers, and different types of labels used for printing of barcodes. The last session, was an interactive session in which the participants shared their views and experiences about the stock verification processes followed in their respective institutions and the solutions to some of the issues faced by the library professionals were discussed upon. Valedictory program: Prof. Lingaraja Gandhi, Director, College Development Council and Director, UGC-Academic Staff College was the Chief Guest. He stressed on the role played by libraries as Temples of Knowledge and Librarians as Facilitators of Knowledge. The Workshop Director, Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore, Mysore who summed up the activities conducted during the workshop. The program was presided over by Sri. S Nagaraja, President MyLISA and Librarian, RIE, Mysore and Dr. N S Harinaryana, Secretary, MyLISA and Associate Professor, DLIS, University of Mysore welcomed the Chief Guest and gave a brief introduction about the activities of MyLISA. Success story of MyLISA OPENS

Dear Professionals, Over the years MyLISA has emerged as the voice of the library and information professionals in Mysore - the city of palaces. MyLISA is extending its helping hands to the local libraries and LIS professionals in the matters and issues concerning them. MyLISA is viewed as a forum which furthers the knowledge and skills in library and information field. It is extremely joyous to announce that the training programme - MyLISA OPENS (Orientation Programme for Enthusiasts in NET/SLET exam) has achieved its goal. The programme trained the aspirants of NET/SLET exams to take up the competition with confidence and achieve the success. The program was conducted between September 2013 to December 2013. The exams for the NET and Karnataka SLET were held on 29th and 8th December 2013 respectively. The results of both of these programmes were announced recently. 22 (39.28%) out of 56 participants of the training programme have been qualified in the NET/Karnataka SLET exam, which is no way a small achievement considering the pass percentage of previous years from Mysore. Two participants from MyLISA group have qualified in the NET exam - a national level test conducted by UGC. MyLISA heartily congratulates those participants who have qualified in these exams. The details of those who have qualified are available in the website http://mylisamysore.weebly.com. Smt. M. Veena of Mahajana's College, who attended the training programme, scored the highest marks and shared the first place with another girl in the Karnataka SLET examination. MyLISA congratulates Smt. Veena for her achievement. The training programme was attended by 56 participants. A few participants from Bangalore traveled every week for attending this purpose alone. The classes were very regularly held on Saturday afternoons and Sunday mornings for more than two months. In all 37 sessions of 2.5 hours each were conducted. In other words, 74 hours of fruitful teaching/training and interaction was arranged. In all there were 12 week-end sessions and 4 public-holiday sessions. In all there were 66 hours of subject oriented classes (Paper 2 and 3) and also 8 hours of paper 1. Initially, MyLISA had promised to conduct only subject oriented classes and to exclude paper 1 from its classes for two reasons. Firstly, the subjects in Paper 1 are not our forte or falls within the domain of activities of MyLISA; secondly a lot of training programmes were available elsewhere in the city at various places for paper 1. However, as the days proceeded there was an increased pressure from the participants to have some sessions for Paper 1 also. Fortunately we could get for resource persons for Paper 1 viz., Sri Nischit and Sri Y. Narasimhan who despite being young were on par in their teaching with most experienced resource persons. MyLISA could muster a galaxy of excellent resource persons for teaching subject papers 2 and 3. In all there were 11 resource persons for subject oriented teaching among them 4 were from other places other than from city of Mysore. Resource persons were Prof. Mallinath Kumbar, Prof. M. Chandrashekara, Prof. P.G. Tadasad, Dr. C.P. Ramasesh, Dr. K. Prakash, Dr. Ramesha, Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Dr. Sampath Kumar, Dr. Adithya Kumari H., Dr. Dharani Kumar, Sri Nagaraja S. Dr. Sunil M.V., and Dr. Vasantha Raju N. They were drawn from Department of Studies in Library and Information Science and also Mysore University Library from University of Mysore, Karnataka State Open University, Regional Institute of Education, SDM/IMD, Bangalore University, Karnataka State Women's University - Bijapur, Tumkur University, Kuvempu University and First Grade College, Periyapatna. MyLISA would acknowledge the excellent work done by each one of them and convey its gratitude to them. The resource persons introduced the basic concepts involved in the subjects that they taught highlighting the modern developments/trends. They used well prepared PPTs for their presentation. Each one of them gave their own tips for solving the objective type questions which proved vital for students. Thus the participants have had a number of tips from different resource persons. All most all previous years question papers were solved. The objective papers that were available for the past ten years were solved with the proper explanation to the answers. This was a great benefit for the participants. Reading resources were distributed in the form of PPTs, Weblinks, Printed Notes, etc. Interactive sessions with many questions asked by the participants was an indicator of the quality of discussions held in the class room. As a matter of fact, the resource persons continued informally even after the formal sessions to guide the participants regarding some of the aspects that were not clear to them. They helped outside the class sessions also. All these factors have contributed the success of MyLISA that we are enjoying today. MyLISA once again congratulates the successful candidates. Today I read an interesting story in Deccan Chronicle Hyderabad Edition. (DC Hyderabad 24/5/2014 p17 & 19) titled: "Number crunchers" on a software company called Modak Analytics. They have analyzed a large database of 81.4 crores of Indian Voters (18 terabytes) and have helped a leading political party to win polls. Our interest, as librarians, arises out of their finding (one minor revelation) that the name Srinivas has been spelt in 600 different ways. The Summer Reading Program is a St. Charles Public Library annual tradition with more than 2,500 kids, teens and adults joining in the excitement each year. Here is some news about the CODATA Conference, now SciDataCon and co-organised with the ICSU World Data System. *SciDataCon 2014 has announced programme tracks and extended the deadline for submissions to 16 June.* The International Conference on Data Sharing and Integration for Global Sustainability (SciDataCon http://www.scidatacon2014.org/) is motivated by the conviction that the most significant research challenges - and in particular the pressing issues relating to global sustainability - cannot be properly addressed without due attention to various issues relating to data. SciDataCon aims to make explicit the connection between concrete and specific challenges to ensure environmental protection, economic prosperity and social well being along with the research questions that arise from these challenges and the necessary role of data policy, management and analysis in addressing these research questions. The effectiveness and credibility of research findings rely on the widest possible availability of quality-assessed and interoperable datasets. To achieve these aims, the SciDataCon programme will be structured around four 'tracks': (A) Dynamic Planet, (B) Global Development, (C) Transformations Towards Sustainability, and (D) Data Science and Services. This structure is intended to bridge cross-cutting data themes and the research themes of Future Earth futureearth.info an international research programme on global sustainability coordinated by ICSU, the International Council for Science, and other partners.
