Dear LIS Friends, Books are treasures. People with reading passion develop their own book treasures. After their use, the books lie unused, and remain in the treasury, some times eternally, waiting for some one to read them. They will be craving for their freedom. MyLISA, Mysore heard their grumbling sound and come out with a new campaign under the banner ‘*Book Dasara 2014*’ with the support of Department of Library and Information Science, University of Mysore, Mysore. Also, Padmashree S.R. Ranganathan, has succinctly given the philosophy of library services in the form of five fundamental laws. The third law ‘*every book its reader*’, emphasis librarians to be active in helping the books to discover its readers. In this effort MyLISA tries to conform to this law. *Book Dasara 2014 is a campaign to collect the 'Used Books' from the donors and distribute to the libraries. This campaign is being held first time in Mysore. * The books so collected between September 5 and 25, 2014 will be exhibited during first week of October 2014 for selection by libraries and children. Till date we have received 600+ books and we are expecting to reach 4 digits. The semantics (attribute terms) and the organizations vary across the databases. Bio-ontologies are used to describe different conceptual frameworks that guide the collection, organization and publication of biological data. The bio-ontologies are a means of communicating and resolving semantic and organizational differences between biological databases in order to enhance their integration and allow interoperability. This seminar includes a short introduction on ontology and its applications followed by short descriptions on bioinformatics, its taxonomy and applications, need for bio-ontologies, ontology library and a case study on cancer ontologies with special reference to the relations. Europe allows public libraries to digitize material in their possession

*Can public libraries (including university libraries) digitize their collection for dissemination to the users? * The European Court of Justice (EJC) states that authors have the right to prohibit the reproduction andcommunication of their works to the public. The court, however, clarified an exception to this right that permits public libraries, for the purpose of research or private study, to make an author's work electronically accessible to library users at electronic reading points within the libraries. The EJC said that* a library would be unable to reali**z**e "its core mission or promote the public interest in promoting research and private study without being able to do this*." However, the court emphasized that printing or electronically transferring an author's work is an act of reproduction, which, if allowed, would require fair compensation to the rights holder. Since beginning of 2014, FAO established a strong partnership with the Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science, Agricultural Information Institute and the Ariadne Foundation, Agro-Know to produce and enhance AGRIS, the International Information System for the Agricultural Science and Technology. The first milestone was achieved with the transfer of the AGRIS data processing from Rome to Athens early in the year. Now the AGRIS steering group is having a meeting in Beijing. In September', the complete integration of the Chinese Agricultural Scientific Abstract Database into AGRIS will be released. Until now only a small percentage of the Chinese material was accessible through AGRIS. The event aimed at promoting open access and open academic practices to early career researchers. It was an eye-opening experience, which showed me how current publication practices affect early career researchers desperate to make their mark in academia. I was particularly struck by Joe McArthur’s (@mcarthur_joe <https://twitter.com/Mcarthur_Joe>) presentation <http://www.righttoresearch.org/learn/LSE-PhD-FOSTER>. Joe is the Assistant Director for from the Right to Research Coalition <http://www.righttoresearch.org/>, and having recently graduated from UCL, had the frustration of not having access to research fresh in his mind. He talked about how publishing firms behind prestigious journals often force researchers to hand over the copyright for years of hard work, (80% of which is publicly funded), only to restrict access through paywalls leading to profit margins for Springer and Elsevier which even the likes of Microsoft and Google would be envious of. And the costs seem to keep going up. Joe mentioned that costs have gone up 400% in the last 20 to 30 years, and the average subscription for a health science journal is now $1482 a year. The humanities are also particularly affected. As humanities subjects receive only 1% of the annual UK research budget nationally, financially stretched libraries have to make difficult decisions about the journals they can subscribe to, according to Caroline Edwards (@the_blochian <https://twitter.com/the_blochian>) from the Open Library of Humanities. Research isn’t just used by other researchers and academics, but also by doctors, policy makers, ministers, engineers and many others. Limiting journal access to university libraries and blocking access via paywalls holds back important and potentially ground-breaking research from the very people who could actually implement it’s recommendations. Open Access and Creative Commons Open access and creative commons licences offer an excellent alternative, particularly to early career researchers looking to establish themselves, and make an impact with their research. There are now over 9000 open journals, some of which offer *Gold *access to their papers, meaning articles are available to download straight away through the journal website. Articles can also be made available through *Green *access, where articles are hosted some of the 2000 odd university repositories. There are, of course, certain myths and beliefs which may put researchers off from publishing openly. Myths, such as open access journals are somehow of a lesser quality, and that these journals lack the prestige and impact of established subscription journals, can be hard to resist. However, many open journals, such as the Journal of Information Literacy <http://ojs.lboro.ac.uk/ojs/index.php/JIL>, are peer-reviewed, and follow the same publishing criteria as subscription journals. Caroline Edwards argued that journals are deemed prestigious because prestige has been conferred upon them by academics over time. By resisting subscription journals, and also publishing through open journals, open journals may also start to gain prestige over time. Contrary to having less impact, publishing through open journals makes research far more accessible to more people, and therefore allowing more people to read and cite articles. Copyright issues can be addressed by using Creative Commons licences, which protect the copyrights of the author, whilst allowing people to use, remix and modify the research materials, so long as they are properly attributed. Research needs to be accessible and communicable, according to Cameron Neylon, Advocacy director for PLOS. He urged researchers to not get bogged down in the process of simply producing paper after paper, but to think about how their research will affect the end user. Research needn’t just be communicated via journal articles; blogs, websites, media articles and social media are also important ways to get research out there. The panel had the following tips for early career researchers: - Think about who is affected by your research and how can they access your work - Using open access journals, github, social media and blogging can open up your research to a much wider audience, potentially leading to more citations and increased impact. - Don’t sign away your copyright! - Researchers are under no obligation to sign any such agreement. Use Creative Commons licences <http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Creative_Commons_license> to protect your work, while allowing others to use it. - Talk to your research librarian! - Research librarians are there to help researchers make their work accessible and can advise on a range of topics, from copyright to publishing in open access journals. - Have an online presence - Being able to network with other researchers and stakeholders in an important part of making sure your research has impact, and can open up new avenues for researchers. Don’t keep your research to yourself! - Open access should not be approached as an onerous task required to fulfil the criteria of REF <http://www.ref.ac.uk/> or Horizon 2020 <http://ec.europa.eu/programmes/horizon2020/en/what-horizon-2020>. It should be seen as the democratisation of research. Virtual display of new books added to IISc departments

Dear Professional, Books procured by Indian Institute of Science departments are processed in the main library but because they are required by the departments immediately, it is dispatched to the departments soon after processing and hence are not displayed along with other new books procured in the main library. Inauguration of Tent Library @ Mysore Dasara 2014

Dear Professional Friends, Greetings from MyLISA Mysore! Like to share the information about the inauguration of '*Tent library*’ today at Mysore Palace Premises (September 1, 2014) by Dr. V. Karikalan IFS, Deputy Conservator of Forest, Government of Karnataka. Sri H.R. Basappa, Deputy Director, Department of Public Institutions, Government of Karnataka; and Sri. Nagaraja S., President, MyLISA Mysore; were the special invitees. The programme was presided by Sri B. Manjunath, Deputy Director, Department of Public Libraries, City Central Library, Government of Karnataka. Dr. N.S. Harinarayana, Secretary, MyLISA Mysore, introduced the concept of Tent Library and presented the various sessions scheduled for 'Library Hour' of the Tent School Time Table. Dr. Mallinath Kumbar, Professor, DoS LIS, University of Mysore and Dr. Chandra Patil, Officer, Sarvar Shikshana Abhiyaan, graced the occasion. He wanted library books for all socioeconomic groups, not just well-educated scholars interested in public domain items. It is the responsibility of the library profession to work towards achieving this goal. MyLISA has put forward its little foot in this direction by mooting the idea of a ‘Tent Library’. Mysore Dasara is the Nadahabba (Karnataka State - Festival). One of the central attractions of the ten-day festivities is the five kilometer Jumboo Savari – the procession by the main elephant accompanied by other elephants carrying the idol of Goddess Chamundeshwari, the sitting deity of Mysore. The preparation for the procession is done eight weeks before the actual procession. The elephants are brought from nearby forest and trained for the purpose. The trainers of elephants – the mahouts – come and stay at Mysore along with their families. Mysore district administration provides them all facilities to their families. Temporary school is started for their children at the premises where they reside inside the palace ground. One of the ardent librarians from Mysore observed that these children lack library facility during that period. He mooted an idea with MyLISA to think of library service to reach the unreached. Acting upon the idea, MyLISA was successful in convincing the district administration of Mysore to extend the library services through Department of Public Libraries, City Central Library, Mysore. As a result a ‘Tent Library’ was established in the premises of the palace where the mahouts reside. These library being a part of school, regular library hours will be included in the school time-table. Staffs from the City Central Library and MyLISA members visit the tent library and conduct the sessions to these students on reading skills, use of books, books handling, types of books, newspaper reading, and other study aided activities. Expertise of a few renowned school librarians are used in providing the service. A lot of book based activities have been planned. Drawing, picture books, clay modeling, bookmark preparation, painting, etc., were also the part of the session scheduled.
