HPS Kalra. *IATLIS Awards 2014: call for nominations* Indian Association of Teachers of Library and Information Science (IATLIS) invites nominations from LIS teachers /professionals /researchers for the following awards: A. IATLIS – Motiwale Best LIS Teacher Award 2014 B. IATLIS - Prof. S.P. Narang Research Promotion Award 2014 C. IATLIS - Prof. Jagindar Singh Ramdev Lifetime Achievement Award 2014 *A. Eligibility for IATLIS –** Motiwale **Best LIS Teacher Award* Executive Council Members of IATLIS are not eligible to be nominated for these awards. The nominee should have at least 10 years of teaching experience at the post-graduate level or 10 years professional experience at a senior level, and should be in service. A person can receive the award only once and one person can nominate only one LIS teacher / professional for each award at a time. *B. Eligibility criteria for IATLIS - Prof. S.P. Narang Research Promotion Award to be given every alternate year to an LIS Teacher* The teacher must be in-service in a UGC recognized university on a full-time basis and must have at least 10 years of teaching and research experience in Library and Information Science. The following aspects of the research work during previous two years shall be considered for the award - Supervision of Ph.D. research work - Research funding got from national and international bodies. - Research papers published in peer-reviewed journals. - Research publications that got citations. *C. Eligibility criteria for** IATLIS **– Prof. Jagindar Singh Ramdev* * Lifetime Achievement* *Award**:* A very senior/retired LIS teacher/professional/researcher who has made profound contribution to library education, research, training, literature, and practice. Claims must be supported with documentary proof. Award can be given to a deserving person even if not applied. Award won't be given if no one is found suitable. The recipient LIS teacher/researcher will be given a citation and a memento/shawl at the Annual IATLIS Conference. The nominations will be considered by an Awards Committee constituted by the IATLIS Executive Committee. An award will not be given in case majority of the Committee Members feel that no one has been found suitable for that award. Self-nominations will not be considered. The nominee should be a member of the IATLIS. Friends: What can public libraries do? Indeed a great deal. Here is a whole list of over 600 individuals (and some teams) articulating what they would want libraries to do. In fact, in a way, it is the idea of crowdsourcing citizen science projects have used to advance science. Look at projects like Polymath, Galaxy Zoo, Foldit, and several others. In India, we have the OSDD (Open Source Drug Discovery) project (initiated by Prof. Samir Brahmachari, former Director General of CSIR). I would like to see professional associations in India (ILA, IASLIC, SIS, SLA-India, etc.) pay attention to such activities. Masters level courses in LIS should sensitize students to such issues. FORMATION OF TELANGANA LIBRARY ASSOCIATION (TSLS) Telangana Library Association was formed in the new State of Telangana. This Association is 25th State Association in 29 States of India. This was formed and inaugurated on Librarian’s Day on 9 August 2014. Prof. M. Kodandaram, Professor of Osmania University and Chairman, Joint Action Committee of all employees Associations in the State inaugurated the Telangana Library Association (TSLA) at the Conference hall, City Central Library, Hyderabad at 10.30 AM on 9th August, 2014. Prof. Kodandaram, Chief Guest of the function in this address said that Knowledge is available in the Society, and those who possess the knowledge are empowered. Many people have come up in the life and made greater achievements by using the available knowledge in libraries and have got an important place in the Society. It is a known fact that the libraries played an important role in the pre-independent India. They were centers for independent and social movements. After independence instead of increased spread of public libraries they are slowly getting reduced over a period of time. Prof Kodandram declared establishment of TSLA by unfolding the registaration certificate of the Association to public. The Hall was full and there was no place to enter into the hall. Many professionals were standing outside and it was for the first time in the State such a gathering was seen for Association meeting. Prof N.Laxman Rao, President, TSLA explained the reasons for starting a new State level Association. He also stated the mission and objectives of the Association as follows: Mission: Libraries for ALL Objectives: 1. To promote the development of all types of libraries in the State of Telangana. 2. To develop programs for capacity building and developing skills for personnel in the field of LIS (Library and Information Science). 3. To organize the lectures, conferences, meetings, symposia in the field of LIS to share and disseminate the knowledge to the LIS professionals. 4. To conduct Continuing Education Programs to share the latest trends / knowledge to the LIS professionals. 5. To act like pressure group for implementing library legislation in the State of Telangana. 6. To act as an advisory body to the Government and other institutions for the development of libraries. 7. To maintain liaison with Regional, national and international agencies and make use of their program, funds and other plans for the development of libraries. 8. To accept grants and donations and use the same for the development of libraries and library professionals. 9. To take up any assignment from any agency or Government in the areas of education and libraries. AND 10.Promoting the technology in libraries for providing quality access to information and knowledge. Further, he also stated that the activities will be organized throughout State and the professionals are consolidated to improve and strengthen the status of public libraries and academic libraries jointly with other State and National level Associations. He also said that this Association will join hands with everyone and organize the programs for quality library services to be provided by the libraries especially public libraries. Earlier Dr.Ch.Ravi Kumar, General Secretary, TSLA invited the guests to the Dias and presented them the banquets. Sri K.Sudhakar Goud, former Head, BRITISH Council, Hyderabad, UNICEF consultant and soft skills trainer made a presentation on the status of public libraries in the State and also gave the statistics showing how the people are being denied of library services in spite of paying the library Cess. He also stressed the need for amending the present public libraries Act to suit to the present day needs. We should be able to achieve the Association’s mission of ‘Libraries for All”, a reality. Dr. E. Rama Reddy, former University Librarian, University of Hyderabad spoke on how technology (ICT) can help the Society to get information / knowledge to every citizen and turn our Society as Knowledge Society. He also stressed the need for optimum utilization and also provide access to all knowledge resources to everyone with the help of ICT. Mr. Vinod Reddy, vice president, TSLA spoke an need for mobilization of resources for public libraries development and also to make use of the available funds for the development of libraries. The Government should help the libraries to build their own buildings and also build good collection to provide efficient services. The meeting continued after inauguration wherein various professionals spoke on the status of libraries, problems of LIS professionals and what the TSLA can do to improve the profession, status of professionals / library services. In the evening the program was closed with vote of thanks. The program began with a rendering of melodious invocation by MYRAcles Ms. Plavani and Mr. Kashish Vyas. Rashtriya e-Market Services Private Limited (ReMSL) -- a joint venture company of the Government of Karnataka and the NCDEX Spot Exchange Limited, has set up the online markets and that has been the game changer. He cited the example of how in the district of Tiptur, the online trading helped triple the price of copra increasing from Rs. 6000 to 18,000 per quintal. He talked about Agricultural Marketing Reforms Committee set up by the Government to study all aspects relating to the objectives of providing a barrier-free agricultural market system for the benefit of farmers and consumers and its report and recommendations along with a comprehensive road map and necessary interventions for undertaking the reforms in agricultural marketing in the State. Having carefully considered the report and recommendations the same has been adopted as Karnataka Agricultural Marketing Policy, 2013. The Government of Karnataka is embarking on an ambitious-reforms agenda for Agricultural Marketing through the implementation of this Policy; he shared this important information with the audience. He urged the young management students to consider the Agri-Business sector as a career option that is well paying, challenging as well as satisfying. The other important Senior Government official of the evening was Shri. Vastrad, IAS, till recently the Director, Department of Agricultural Marketing. He spoke about the evolution of the Agri-Business sector and the government’s role in bringing about positive changes to the benefit of both farmers and consumers. While historically “trust” played an important role in ensuring efficiency and fair play, today technology is brought in to ensure the same. The authors of the book are two stalwarts, with vast experience in both academia and industry. While Dr. Pingali Venugopal, Associate Director, XLRI, Centre for Global Management and Responsible Leadership, and Professor (Marketing), comes with more than three decades of significant research work in the Indian context, Mr. Ram Kaundinya, formerly Managing Director, Advanta India Ltd, and Chairman, Association of Biotech Led Enterprises – Agricultural Group (ABLE-AG), member of the Board of Directors of Axis Bank, comes with equal years of experience in the agrochemical & seed industries and banking sector. Mr. Ram Kaundinya also holds a faculty position, and he teaches Strategy, to the students of the MYRA School of Business. According to the authors the book is meant for policy makers, managers and business students. However, the book makes for an easy and interesting read and is accessible to all concerned citizens. Its 220 pages draw on data to show the long distance that India has traveled since Independence. They begin by examining the evolution and impact of India’s agricultural policies. They move on to describe what India is doing today to get agri-inputs like seeds, fertilizers, pesticides and equipment to the farmers. They conclude by making suggestions to increase agricultural productivity in the future. This book is a must read for ordinary citizens who realize that food security is at risk in the foreseeable future. The book is a heady combination of academic scholarship and field realities. This can result in failure to find relevant documents when there is ambiguity with the place names and names of organizations, people, buildings and streets. Librarians and bibliographers used to maintain authority files for disambiguating among them with proper choice of attribute sets. But, complexity increases when the data is unstructured as in news articles, blogs, tweets. For, successful execution of location-based and feature-based queries, the construction of spatial indices based on the spatial attributes is required, including the integration of text indexing with spatial indexing methods that exploit geo-tagging procedures to categorize documents with respect to geographic space. In this seminar, we will discuss about geo-tagging, possible spatial indexing structures and few research problems in this area. Paths of Discovery: Comparing the Search effectiveness of EBSCO Discovery Service, Summon, Google Scholar, and Conventional Library Resources ( http://crl.acrl.org/content/early/2012/05/07/crl-374.abstract Abstract ) In 2011, researchers at Bucknell University and Illinois Wesleyan University compared the search efficacy of Serial Solutions Summon, EBSCO Discovery Service, Google Scholar and conventional library databases. Using a mixed-methods approach, qualitative and quantitative data was gathered on students' usage of these tools. Regardless of the search system, students exhibited a marked inability to effectively evaluate sources and a heavy reliance on default search settings. On the quantitative benchmarks measured by this study, the EBSCO Discovery Service tool outperformed the other search systems in almost every category. This article describes these results and makes recommendations for libraries considering these tools. *2. Library System Report 2014 By Marsehll Breeding* EBSCO currently stands as the front-runner, with a long lead of 5,612 library subscribers to EDS. OCLC reports 1,717 libraries with access to WorldCat Local, though a smaller number use it as their primary discovery interface.
