When 24-year-old Abhijit Nikam quit a well-paying job in an automobile spare parts manufacturing company to start a library, all hell broke loose. Neither his family nor his in-laws — he had been married only a year — wanted anything to do with the new venture. Undeterred, Nikam invested his own savings — about Rs 2.5 lakh, bought a van, 1,000 books and started a library-on-wheels at Chinchwad in May 2008. This week, he's ready to roll out a second van and is all set to enter Pune with Library Mall, as the mobile library is known. "Pune has a bigger reading market and I'll begin with rounds of Kothrud, Katraj, Viman Nagar, Kharadi and Vishrantwadi," said the now 29-year-old, who works with a four-member team. He is gearing up to buy around more 2,000 books. An ardent reader himself, propagating Marathi literature and encouraging the young generation to read are mainly what drives Nikam. "People barely read these days and very few children are aware of the richness of Marathi literature. The mobile library is a step towards enhancing knowledge," he said. Of the 7,000-odd books in Nikam's van, almost 5,000 are in Marathi and range across all genres. The rest are in English. Library Mall currently has around 500 members. "I initially spent a lot of time talking to housing society officials and obtaining permission to wait in front of buildings. Initially, only one or two people enrolled, but the numbers have increased slowly," he said. Most of the readers are between 30 and 45 years old. Hemant N Bhagwat, who runs an engineering and management institute in Chinchwad and has been a member of Library Mall for one-and-a-half years, said, "The mobile library works for people like me who can't match the timings of local libraries. Nikam or his team call me before coming in the evening. They have a good collection of Marathi books and my wife, daughter and I are regular readers." Another member, Tushar P Deshpande, feels Library Mall has helped spread the habit of reading at a minimal cost (deposit of Rs 500, registration fee of Rs 250 and a monthly rental of Rs 250 against five books at a time). "There are nearly 100 members from my society in Queenstown. They have a good collection," he gushed. However, Nikam admits he hasn't been able to make a profit yet. "Whatever money we make goes back into the library," he said, adding that he hopes expanding the business would bring in profit. "I had a tough time convincing my wife and brother to help me — they agreed only about four years ago. I knew there wouldn't be much money, but the objective is to spread knowledge," said Nikam. Ask him if he feels online reading is competition for libraries, and he disagrees. "I have set up an online portal, where people can browse. But reading on a Kindle or a tablet can be tiring. Tihar jail launches e-library for women inmates

NEW DELHI: In an effort to empower the women inmates of Delhi's Tihar jail, an e-Library has been set up in its premises which would cater only to them. Director General (Delhi Prisons) Alok Verma inaugurated the e-library in the presence of former IPS officer Kiran Bedi and other senior officials yesterday. The abstract should state in about 150 words the sum and substance of the paper. The conclusion should include the recommendations made in the paper. The keywords which describe the main issues discussed should be given in alphabetical order. The paper should also contain the author's name, designation, organisation, address, telephone, fax, and E-mail address. References at the end of the paper and their in-text citing should be according to APA Style manual. The present submitted study has been focused mainly for the physical classification problem and carried out on the basis of Ranganathan prominent idea and his already laid facet formula as a tribute to the magic of the colon classification. In the study some useful methods has been incorporated with valuable suggestions in modification for the purpose. The study was centred basically to drove away the blame to Ranganathan that his Colon (CC,6 &7) and CCC both have not made any provision for treating non book material and to retrieve some perfect ways with useful suggestion for adopting such methods of Physical Classification by which the problem of treating specially the electronic form may be eliminated and pinpointed individualization can be achieved to fulfil the demand of Ranganathan 5laws too. It was also main effort of the study to residue out some appropriate means and ways so that the Colon may be used widely as user friendly and the method of Ranganathan for book classification can be used with any classification scheme of any nature or generation background. Thus the four basic characteristics in study have been detected, selected and suggested for the purpose in the study so that it can be easily used on computers. The study is also followed by very useful suggestions and conclusions with a view to be considered by the future generation of LIS subject and the persons involved in the revision task of CC7. Dear All, The following are the General steps to get your libsys data in excel format for final conversion into Marc format to switching into other ILMS software. Please note that there are several other tips and tricks which you can use to convert your libsys data in excel, so that you can migrate in some other desired software like Koha, Newgenlib, Evergreen etc. The reports module given under Cataloging/Circulation/Serial of Libsys software can be used to get the data in Excel format. In-case you are not getting subject heading than it can be added at the time of excel data conversion as well as you can also group together all the same titles, but you should have at least ISBN/ISSN number in your records. Marc editor (http://marcedit.reeset.net/downloads ) is wonderful software which not only converts your data in marc format but it also gives you opportunity to make your data standard before importing in new ILMS. In case of any help needed in this regard please feel free to conta! ct. We have implemented the Koha software at various libraries and found Libsys is the only software which does not have option/permit to export the data in Marc format however this have option to Import in any format (It allow you to come inside the room but does not allow you easily to go out side the room)!!! . October 10, 2014|Maura Gillespie Today marks the 200th anniversary <http://history.house.gov/HistoricalHighlight/Detail/35613> of the resolution that permitted Congress to purchase Thomas Jefferson’s book collection to create a new Library of Congress (LOC). After the British burned the White House, U.S. Capitol, and Library of Congress in August of 1814, the rebuilding process required replacing the collection. The resolution passed and Congress purchased Jefferson’s books for just $23,950. To honor this important anniversary, here are five great things you may not know about the Library of Congress: 1) *Veterans History Project*. Through the American Folklife Center at the Library of Congress, the Veterans History Project <http://www.loc.gov/vets/> welcomes stories and personal accounts of American war veterans from World War I to the present conflicts our troops face today. To date, Speaker Boehner, representing Ohio’s Eighth District, has contributed 172 interviews <http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/vhp/search?query=%2Bboehner> from his constituents to the Veterans History Project, one of which was with Colonel Tom Moe <http://lcweb2.loc.gov/diglib/vhp-stories/loc.natlib.afc2001001.81770/>, the former Director for the Ohio Department of Veterans and a POW of the Vietnam War. Each year the Library of Congress recognizes an artist of popular music for their outstanding contributions to American music, theatre, and culture, and to the Library of Congress. Next month, the Library will present the Gershwin Prize for Popular Song to legendary singer-songwriter Billy Joel. SciDataCon aims to make explicit the connection between concrete and specific challenges to ensure environmental protection, economic prosperity and social well being along with the research questions that arise from these challenges and the necessary role of data policy, management and analysis in addressing these research questions. The effectiveness and credibility of research findings rely on the widest possible availability of quality-assessed and interoperable datasets. Research data are essential to all scientific endeavours. The emerging cultures of data sharing and publication, open access to, and reuse of data are the positive signs of an evolving research environment. Nevertheless, several cultural and technological challenges are still preventing the research community from realizing the full benefits of these tendencies. The Committee on Data for Science and Technology (CODATA) <http://codata.org/> and the World Data System (WDS) <http://www.icsu-wds.org/>, interdisciplinary committees of theInternational Council for Science (ICSU) <http://www.icsu.org/> are together advancing this agenda by actively promoting effective data policies and good data management practices in the research community, to produce better science, which ultimately benefits society.
