Dear all, We all love our online-presence, of course, for good cause! Is it not really interesting when people find your name and publication details on Google Scholar? Yes, it is! So, here is the reason! We are indeed happy to inform you that Google Scholar (GS) is indexing bibliographic details of the records archived in ICon-AD <http://www.iconad.in/>. This means, GS retrieves 1300+ authors (and other bibliographic details) from ICon-AD, when searched (GS) by author name. You can search by author name, and GS displays the entry on its page which is archived in ICon-AD. But it is subject to the quality of searches made, records that are indexed so far by GS and hits thrown by the same. Likewise, searches can be made by title (with double inverted commas) and keywords too. All results are being mirrored from ICon-AD. Dear friends, This is with regard to an ongoing discussion on API Scores for Librarians for promotion under CAS and Direct Recruitment. The proposed API scores developed by UGC can be adopted by respective Universities/ Institutes for the purpose. The scores developed for librarians under Category I & II are OK for CAS. But, Category III needs to be modified considering the nature of work the librarians are involved in. As per the UGC guidelines, in order to apply for the post of Dy. Librarian (Direct Recruitment), an applicant should score at least 300 points under Category III which is inappropriate. Because, after the appointment an incumbent will be placed on 15600-39100 with AGP 8000 and not on 37400-67000 with AGP 9000 as in the case of Associate Professor. Expecting an applicant to the post of Dy. Librarian (Direct) to score 300 API points in just 05 years is impractical. This unsound rule, I feel, will have a negative impact on the profession. Dear Mr. Vinod, You have made quite an exhaustive document and it is quite helpful in dealing specific scenarios which you have already explained. There's nothing much wrong with that (except for some typos in cron job section). Actually it's so detailed that it should be part of some wiki/web page which you can keep updating. People who have similar scenarios like you (same OS, DSpace version) can benefit from it. If the official documentation doesn't work they can look up to your web-page than searching through these mails. I just wanted to put my two cents to the fact that there are many scenarios which are not that complicated, where the official documentation just works. In fact, the official documentation (which you provided the link) has always worked for me (I run a professional consulting service). The motto should be to keep things simple, so that many people can give it a try. It may or may not work, but giving a try is key to getting things done. Coming to your specific issues, there are just too many variables in any DSpace installation (OS version/architecture, Java version/vendor, Java container in use, Java libraries path, permissions, etc.). DSpace-Tech forum is the correct place to look for more technical help. Every installation is different in a way. That's why it's difficult to give any immediate solution to your problems without going through various logs and systems settings. Basically many librarians are undergoing and implementing/maintaining the scores for thier track records or for the NAAC purpose on available circumstances. But Most of the Government Degree colleges lag to fullfill the above aspects in various states. [?] We Many professional colleagues had discussed par to the issues raised by Mr.Gopakumarji and Drawn a conclusions and taken a support of Dept of LIS to affiliated universities, Academic Staff Colleges and submitted memorandum to Department of Higher Education, Karnataka through Karnataka College Librarians Association(KSCLA) to give an opportunity to include the syllabus in degree colleges, as we came to know that In karnataka State Physical Directors are eligible to teach Yogic Science etc subjects related in Degree colleges and it has been passed in session officially recently in karnataka. So many professional colleagues in our karnataka state are teaching Information Literacy In Many Colleges affiliated to Universities in Karnataka as a part but failed to include officially through total approach and facing difficulties in approach on govt level?. But this is Right time to approach HRD/Higher Education in different states to include librarians in teaching activities as it will help their professional growth and subject cum curriculum towards PM concept Digital India. Librarians are removed from Minor/Major projects, Hope in future if we wont raise the issues collectively one layman can handle the library(What everbody is thinking in each State from past Days)?. In many Govt Degree colleges Librarians are running one-Man Show as the college strength may be 1000/2000/3000/ upto 7000. How the service is given and how the user is satisfied?All duties has been handled by librarians as we achieved same Eligibility criterias and Qualifications as other Teaching professional friends in various subjects. Hope we can work collectively through forums and many our senior most librarians and professional colleagues who amongst facing the problems and to overcome these problems can suggest, so that we can raise this issues to higher level in each states towards government and Central government for the professional benefits. INDIA RANKS 7TH IN WORLD LIST FOR PEER CITATIONS IN RESEARCH JOURNALS If citations by peers of research work done by scholars is a good benchmarking index, then Indian scholars rank second to China in the Asiatic region but is pushed to seventh place in the world rankings. China had almost 36,000 citable documents in the business, management and accounting areas, while India had nearly 14,000 citations. However, in the world map, the US was far ahead with 1.6 lakh citations in the top rank. Kulbhushan Balooni, Director-incharge, IIM Kozhikode, delivering the keynote address at the inaugural session of the Pan IIM World Management conference at the institute campus here, gave out these figures to stress the importance of research. "Knowledge creation is recognition among the peers. Its benchmarking is done by the number of citations by peers of a research article. We do not have any choice but to accept the citations as an important indicator of the quality of research paper and the impact factor of the journals," said Balooni. Balooni said the IIMs have to collectively work towards effective knowledge management creation and raise their academic standards and also measure their own research performance effectively. While the top three IIMs, the older ones, as well as ISB, fare well in citations per document, the newer IIMs as well as other B schools, lag behind and have to catch up with their older peers, he said. Balooni made the point that in recent years, a large number of young scholars have joined IIMs. "Those who have joined the new IIMs have an enormous responsibility on their shoulders to shape the academics of their respective institutions. The trend across IIMs is to push the research agenda and this augurs well for young research scholars," he said. Dear Professionals, Mrs. Ashalatha, Scientist 'F' and Head, Library and Information Centre , ISRO Head Quarters is superannuating today, 31st Oct 2014. She did MLIS from Bangalore University (Course conducted at DRTC along with my batch of 1976-77). Then she worked with Late Prof. M.A. Gopinath as Research Assistant in designing Depth Schedule for Zoology and Botany. She joined ISRO HQ as Scientific Assistant in 1978 and served for more than 37 years. She has been leading a fairly big and rich Special Library of ISRO HQ since 1998. She took lead for giving online access to good number of e-journals for ISRO Patrons. She has been responsible in developing an Institutional Repository using DSpace, giving access to >12,500 items like research articles, internal reports, lectures, newspaper clippings, etc and made it available for the benefit of all ISRO centres through SPACENET. She has provided customised team services covering both bibiographic and full texts covering topics like Moon Mission, GSLV, PSLV, Mars Mission and Space Debris. She took initiative to form ISRO Libraries Consortia, but some how it did not materialise. She has trained many young LIS professionals and developed her team to carry forward her good work, To her credit she has presented some papers in International Conferences and also few publications. Prof. Timothy Gowers is a celebrated mathematician. A professor at the University of Cambridge, UK, he is a Fellow of the Royal Society and a Fields Medalist. In the midst of his research and teaching he finds time to make scientific research freely accessible. Not only did he, through the PolyMath project, give an opportunity for interested common citizens to take part in solving high level research questions, but he also initiated the Cost of Knowledge (aka Boycott Elsevier) movement.
