Dear professional colleagues We are happy to inform that SALIS – The Society for the Advancement of Library and Information Science and Puthiya Thalaimurai TV Channel jointly organized a mega RALLY for promoting Reading Habit- ( an awareness programme-) and use the Library simultaneously at Chennai, Coimbatore, Erode, Tiruchi, Madurai, Tirunelveli and Pondichery on 15th November 2014 between 3 P.M to 6. 00 PM. About 8500 students from schools, colleges and universities and also about another 4000 LIS professionals, teachers, children and general public participated in the RALLY. Ministers, Several IAS and IPS officers, Vice-chancellors, College and Schools Principals, Film and media personalities, educationists, Social workers, NGO’S, writers, poets, speakers, etc were participated in all the seven cities and spoke about the importance of ‘READING HABIT’, ‘Why we should use Library’ and also about the RALLY. All of them appreciated and congratulated SALIS for having arranged the RALLY for a noble social cause successfully. About 10,000 people took the OATH (given below) to promote the Reading habit. ----I am aware that reading makes a person, expands one's skill, knowledge, wisdom and is also essential for the betterment of life. --- As an educated individual in the society of India, I commit that I shall read and make others around me especially children to read at least one hour in a day and also at least one book in a month. --- I assure that I will present books as gift and also urge others to do so. --- I shall work to spread this message with young students and parents to create a knowledge society. Designing and printing and sending 2000 posters, 10000 brochures, 10000 book marks, 10000 certificates, 700 placards, 250 banners, etc for the Rally to various cities in time was a herculean task. We distributed 600 T-shirts to volunteers and also distributed caps, books, brochures, book marks, pens, water bottle, snacks, fruity, bags, etc to about 8000 participants. Meticulously planned and arranged the inaugural function at the beginning of the RALLY and also Valedictory function at the end of the Rally in all the cities. The Rally covered about 3 K.M in all the places. Police personnel have given excellent support in all the places. Ambulance followed the Rally. We carried also medical kit for any emergency.. LIVE telecast for the entire programme has been arranged for the public. The programme was also telecast throughout the day on 15th and 16th Nov 2014. Prior announcement about the of the RALLY in TV has been made. Lakhs of people watched the Live telecast and continuous news items in the PT TV channel. Many personalities and senior SALIS members spoke to the media persons live explaining the importance of the RALLY. Many leading English and Tamil news papers such as The Hindu, Indian Express, Dinamalar, etc published news about the Rally. We had faced many challenges in getting police permission, getting sponsorship, inviting students from 100 of schools and colleges, fixing the VIPS, venues, etc and above all mobilizing sponsorship and resources in all the 7 cities. Continuous raining in Tamil Nadu and even earthquake warning threatened us till last minute. We had overcome all these hurdles with firm and courage and conducted the RALLY successfully and peacefully in all the seven cities. SALIS created a history for our profession and it is a milestone in the annals of SALIS. It is the social responsibility of all of us particularly to the LIS professionals to promote reading habit. AMU has been running the program at the UG level over the years. this is not going to refurbish the image of the profession.Non-professionals are made IC of libraries demonstrates that we are lacking the professional fervor.Otherwise how come a person with no  licence( professional degree)  can run the show of a library.Then, we do not have a firm professional stage to protect our interests.We need a solid,vocal professional association that can plead our case as and when needed. In my considered opinion we do not have any.Again, we must be able to pro! ve in practical terms  that we are useful, unavoidable and demanded in the society.Remember a profession gives to its practitioner only as much as she/he is able and ready to give to it.Our professional image and public relations have been at a very low ebb  most of the time. Naturally the profession cannot bloom in the society. It is unfortunate that we have not been able to introduce a real perception of the library in the minds of the community.It will be injustice to spare LIS school education and the schools that impart it  from these maladies. I wish I could share a little more, but I am out of station ans shall be able to do so only once I am back to my hometown Prof. Wajih A. 1st Alumni Meet and Seminar on Library Development in Odisha: Past, Present and Future Organized by Alumni Association and Department of Library and Information Science, Utkal University, Bhubaneswar Date – 14th and 15th February 2015 About Us: The Department of Library and Information Science (DLIS), Utkal University (UU), Bhubaneswar was established in 1981. Congratulations to Rayna, Pierre-Carl Langlais, Jenny and Katelyn for making this widely known. In India every consortium signs such secret contracts although all the money they pay the publishers come from the taxpayers. In the US and UK activists have used Freedom of Information Act to bring out the contracts into the open. At least in two cases a major publisher objected to it but the courts turned down their unjust objections. There is a Right to Information provision in India and we must use it to get the details of the contracts consortia sign with publishing companies. Dear friends, I have been observing the discussions on the image and status of the librarian in the forum. I am disappointed to read some of the opinions expressed by my senior colleagues on the issue. My first question is : why should we feel unimportant? The UGC and Governments have provided all the facilities to librarians on par with teachers. We should be thankful for that. The basic role of the librarian is to support the teaching-learning programmes by way of providing required study and reference material. We should do that work efficiently and effectively. We should think about how to increase our efficiency in our routine work. Change in designation will not change our nature of work. What is wrong in the present nomenclature? Why are we so eager to get re-designated as Assistant Professor/ Associate Professor/ and Professor? Do you think teachers are superior to librarians? No. We all are equal. We should learn from Doctors, Lawyers and Engineers about feeling proud of the profession. Creating a brand or image depends on the quality of work that we do. If we start feeling low, the others will also start ignoring us. Instead of fighting for the introduction of Library Science as a subject at the Undergraduate Level, we should work for strengthening the library system in our respective colleges and institutes. I don't know how others feel about me but, I feel proud of myself. Dear Friends, This is in response to some very interesting discussions that are currently going on the subject: "Does Introduction of LIS Syllabus in Undergraduate Course Curriculum Change the Libraries/Librarians image". While, at the outset, I broadly agree with various views already expressed by our friends in this discussion trail, it will not be out of place and time to state that, even though we cannot always control various circumstances, factors and players in the LIS field like - LIS Schools, Professional Bodies, Training & Development Organizations, etc. and expect them to do some 'genuine good work' for the upliftment of our profession, I feel that, as working professionals, we ourselves can do our bit in improving the overall situations in our work environments and organizations. As an LIS professional serving in the field for over last two decades, based on my regular interactions with various fellow LIS professionals, I have observed that the following are some of the 'practical reasons', which create real impediments for the LIS professionals to get ahead in their professional life and maintain their professional status / image. Here are my humble observations and suggestions: a) Currently, there are several well-organised libraries in various types and kinds, that are in operations in our Country and these are managed by well-qualified and equally competent LIS professionals. However, as professionals, many of us, quite often does not know how to 'show-case' our 'best professional work / productive work' to attract the much-needed appreciations and recognitions from the Management of our Parent Organizations as well as User Groups. This needs to change through instilling more and more self-confidence in ourselves with a positive approach, supplemented by making effective communications (formal/ informal) within the organization, including with our user groups. b) Another important factor, which contributes to a non-LIS professionals taking charge of Libraries (including in some of the leading and reputed organizations) is that, we as Sr. LIS Professionals fail to create proper succession plan for the future. And in a number of such cases, when a Sr Librarian retires or leaves, without having groomed a person second-in-line (in spite of having a good number qualified and experienced LIS people within the team) to take over the Librarian position, such organizations either make a Faculty member / Research head, Admin person etc., as the in-charge of such Libraries or recruit a new LIS professional from outside the organization. Such a situation actually demoralises the existing LIS team. If these kinds of situations have to change, then it is the Sr LIS Professional who has to play a major positive role (with the blessings of top management) in identifying and grooming the second- in-line person to take over his / her job in future. Equally, in some such cases, here the existing Jr LIS team members are also to be blamed to some extent, as in a quite few cases, howsoever the Sr Librarian tries, the Jr Librarian never shows any positive intent or just remains very reluctant to become the next team leader (Librarian) and tries to be happy (content!) with the role of second fiddle to someone. Only, if such scenarios changes, then the image our profession will also change for better. c) In spite of offering various modern library services and Internet based online library services etc., we still have a long way to go in 'proactively reaching out to our various user groups' by offering value-added and high-quality library and information services with some local level customization and need based service approach. This kind of proactive approach needs to pick-up with more consistent, user-centred innovative strategies and creative strategies in information services design and delivery. d) While a number of us are good at offering high-quality library and information services at the local level with some innovative ways, we are not good at consistently sharing as well as benchmarking our best practices (event worst practices!) with our fellow LIS professionals, at the National as well as International levels. On this front, it may be noted that, some of the so called "National / International LIS Conferences" that are organised in this Country; often the quality of the papers presented / published in various LIS Conferences / Proceedings; and also our 'less-active participation' in such conferences are the clear indicators for such poor and depressing trends in our field. This needs to improve for the better with open minded knowledge-sharing approach, supported by quality research papers, case studies, books, etc. - leading to more and more professionally rewarding debates and discussions. e) Finally, having opted for a noble and scholarly service profession that of LIS, sometimes, we can be less self-centred and more services oriented (we are in the service of others!) and by doing so, our service quality (and mainly its positive impact on our user communities) itself will speak for our status, position and credibility in any organization. I know, this is easier said than done. But, I feel, we can do it by taking ourselves less seriously and our library users more seriously!. (No philosophy - just trying to be more practical, as I had benefited from such positive approaches, every now and then). Dear Members, The Bengaluru edition of Deccan Herald dated Tuesday, 11 Nov carried an interesting article with the above title in its supplements' section. BinBag is a social entrepreneurial start-up initiated by Mr. Achritra Borgohain and it is under incubation at the Indian Institute of Management Bangalore's N.S. Raghavan Centre for Entrepreneurial Learning (NSRCEL). The BinBag concept involves giving gifts or money to those who dispose of their e-waste to this start-up. I met Mr. Achitra this morning and handed over my first installment of e-waste to BinBag. I have assured him that every bit of e-waste that has been lying around at my home will to handed over to BinBag for responsible recycling. I take this opportunity to urge all the fellow members to make use of the services of BinBag or any other similar initiate to dispose of their personal e-waste for responsible recycling. Libraries, too, can play an effective role in the collection of e-waste from the library patrons just by placing a collection bag the at entrance of the library. The e-waste thus collected at the libraries can be handed over to initiatives such as the BinBag for effective recycling. I have another suggestion to the fellow members: Almost every day, we have some professional activity or the other in some part of the country. The organizers of such events could make an appeal to the prospective audience to bring along their personal e-waste to the event. The organizers should collect the e-waste brought by the audience and then hand over them for responsible recycling. Does Introduction of LIS Syllabus in Undergraduate Course Curriculum Change the Libraries/Librarians image?

Dear Sir/Madam, It has been often deliberated in many professional forums that (at least in Karnataka) higher education department such as Department of Collegiate Education (DCE) should introduce LIS syllabus (information literacy) as a subsidiary paper in undergraduate course curriculum. Karnataka State College Librarians Association (KSCLA) has been in the forefront on this issue for some time. In fact, in 2012 KSCLA organized one day conference on the theme “Information Literacy”. Then Karnataka Higher Education Minister Sri. C.T. Ravi was invited to inaugurate the conference. It was done mainly to place a request to introduce the LIS syllabus in under graduate course curriculum. Even after this as well, in many of the conferences our professionals have deliberated on this issue. Though this is an important issue, does merely introducing LIS syllabus in the curriculum change the image of the libraries and librarians? Libraries even at the higher education level in India have not given enough importance. It has often been a neglected entity in college environment. At the behest of UGC, librarians are appointing for managing the library in higher education institutions mainly in undergraduate colleges. Otherwise, some secondary division clerk would have been put in place to run the show (there were/are cases of non-professionals managing college libraries). Of late, professionals entering the LIS profession are demanding the equal status on par with teachers at the higher education level. Librarians are today on par with teachers in terms of financial benefits (eg., pay scale) but in terms of professional status librarians have not been seen as equal to teachers. Introducing a LIS curriculum in undergraduate colleges is not a solution for this. We as professionals should demand for better infrastructure and human resource to manage libraries. Most of the college libraries (in Karanataka) even lack basic facilities such as proper buildings to store and organize books. Man power is a big problem librarians have to manage everything on their own. There is a no supportive man power to manage libraries. This has dented the image of the libraries. Introduction of LIS curriculum in undergraduate courses would be an additional baggage rather a benefit to librarians. After teaching, librarians have to work again in the library. Who would there to manage it? Instead of this let us fight for our professional rights (for proper facilities) to be remain as library professionals. Let is once again remember the adage “librarians are the teacher’s teacher”. Merely having the designation of assistant professor of LIS would not change the image of the profession. Dear LIS Professionals, Mr. Vasantha Raju N. has raised right issues about status of librarians in the professionals community. Librarians are termed as secondary professionals in college libraries. One of the main reason behind it may be ill status of libraries. An incapable library can be handled by any one. People visit there as a stack of books. The second reason of it may be senior professionals of library science also as they select incapable librarians (having only degrees in library science and therefore eligible to the post) which worse the image of librarians. In many departments in universities such professionals (as faculty members) hinder the growth of meritorious students. When library professionals are motivated towards their selves and selection processes in the country is not transparent, library science will be devoid of influential intellects. We professionals should respect knowledge in the community, but I see people are self-oriented. And the profession is going downwards. Why India is not presenting an another Ranganathan? What is DRTC, NISCAIR and premier universities are doing in India. We professionals are enemies of the profession. We are *not* sensitive to the profession. That is the reason, some library professionals are extremely underpaid. But it is not a matter to the people in high positions as they are being paid well. Please note that there are several other tips and tricks which you can use to convert your libsys data in excel, so that you can migrate in some other desired software like Koha, Newgenlib, Evergreen etc. The reports module given under Cataloging/Circulation/Serial of Libsys software can be used to get the data in Excel format. In-case you are not getting subject heading than it can be added at the time of excel data conversion as well as you can also group together all the same titles, but you should have at least ISBN/ISSN number in your records. Marc editor and excel (http://marcedit.reeset.net/downloads ) is wonderful software which not only converts your data in marc format but it also gives you opportunity to make your data standard before impor! ting in new ILMS. Interpretation of UGC notification by Dr.Ramesh Gaur is ultra vires. .I want to know that can any university place directly appointed Deputy Librarian in 9000 pay grade.There is no provision in UGC notification to ask somebody after three years to produce 300 score.They get automatically upgraded to Pay Band Four i.e. 9000. J N U can not interpret UGC norms as they wish.I once again reiterate JNU has violated UGC Norms.
