Sad demise of Sri. D.N Nagararja Rao

I am quite saddened to report the demise od Sri. D.N. Nagaraja Rao, former Librarian of NIE Mysore. After his retirement at NIE, he offered his services to the institutions of The Ramakrishna Mission in Mysore. He took an active part in building their libraries and in teaching new students. He was a most humble person, always looking for inspiration from his peers and seniors. He was always present in library meetings with the enthusisam which marked him out as a true professional, always willing to learn and share what he knew. He was truly an unsung hero of the profession. He passed away on 5th Dec peacefully at Mysore after a brief period of hospitalization. I am sure all people who knew him will join me in offering our heartfelt condolences to his family. It is very saddening to note that Sri D.N. Nagaraja Rao passed away on December 5, 2014 at the age of 81. Sri Nagaraja Rao was a very active librarian from Mysore. Even after his retirement in early 1990s, he was active in the professional circles and enthusiastically attending all the professional activities. He is a life member of MyLISA. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree in Library Science from Karnatak University, Dharwad and Masters from University of Mysore. He served the National Institute of Engineering, Mysore for nearly three decades and retired from the official service from the same institute. Later he rendered his services at Ramakrishna Vidyashala and created a database of books in CDS/ISIS during 1990s. He was very passionate for books. He had his own collection of books of more than ten thousands in his house. He even created a database of all those books in CDS/ISIS. He added the abstracts and table of contents of all the books in the database. His collection was characterized by the richness of subjects such as philosophy, personality development, religion, social sciences, English literature and library sciences. He was the habit of purchasing multiple copies of books of Ramakrishna Mission and was giving them as gifts to children and those who help him in some way. He was very proud of his own collection and as a true librarian he was enthusiastically introduce his library to those who visited his house. He was very much interested to guide children and motivate them for inculcating reading habits. At MyLISA he was the most attended member in all its activities. He was quite punctual and was keen to collect the presentations, papers and other informative literature. His interest in learning new technology, eagerness to get new ideas and hardworking nature made him a role model for many younger generation professionals. He did not lose his inquisitiveness till his death. He was interacting with many professionals in Mysore. He even pen down, recently, his own experiences under the title ‘Reminiscence of a retired librarian’. MyLISA would post that on its website after getting consent from his family members. The sad news of his journey to the permanent abode came during a Two-Day National Conference on Social Media in Libraries held jointly by SBRR Mahajana College and MyLISA. The delegates immediately pay homage to the departed soul by observing two minute silence. 25L BOOKS ON OFFER, GRAB ANY FOR FREE Hundreds of book lovers from across the City filed into the National College Grounds in Basavanagudi on Sunday as the three-day ‘Pustaka Parishe’ (book fair) began on a grand note. Nearly 25 lakh books on literature, culture, education, health and religion are on display. Visitors can pick any book of their choice free of cost. The organiser of the event, Srishti Ventures, a socio-cultural organisation, expects more than two lakh visitors during the seventh edition of the Parishe. Among the books are the works of Kannada literary giants Kuvempu and Shivaram Karanth next to acclaimed American writers Ernest Hemingway and Arthur Miller. The organisers told Deccan Herald they were getting around 60 calls from people every day, wishing to donate rare books With the rare and old titles, the organisers have developed a library of 30,000 books. There are 1,516 dictionaries of various languages and subjects, besides 60,000 titles useful to school and college students. Publishers and writers can sell their books on the second and third day. They expect about 150 writers and publishers. A symposium on ‘Survival of Kannada: Practical Measures’ will be conducted. Jnanpith awardee and veteran Kannada writer Prof Chandrashekhara Kambara, who inaugurated the Parishe, urged the public to actively take part in the signature campaign launched by the Kendra Sahitya Akademi seeking mother tongue as medium of instruction in schools. “The Akademi recently launched the campaign for which there has been a very good response in Gujarat, West Bengal, Maharashtra and other states. The campaign seeks to ensure mother tongue as the medium of instruction in schools. Everybody in Karnataka should take part in it to save Kannada and ensure it as the medium of instruction in schools,” he said. Kambara demanded that primary and secondary education be nationalised to solve the issue of medium of instruction in schools. According to him, most regional languages, including Kannada, are struggling to survive. The Supreme Court has held that parents have the right to choose the medium of instruction, which cannot be questioned. Hence, the only option left is to nationalise primary and secondary education, he opined. *Google should pay authors for scanned books, US appeals court told* Google’s effort to scan millions of books for a digital library violates copyright law, a lawyer for a group of authors told a US appeals court *New York*: Google Inc.’s massive effort to scan millions of books for a digital library violates copyright law, illegally depriving authors of licensing fees, royalties and sales, a lawyer for a group of authors told a US appeals court on Wednesday. Paul Smith, who represents the Authors Guild and several individual writers, told a three-judge panel at the 2nd US circuit court of appeals in New York that the Google Books project was a “quintessentially commercial” infringement designed to protect the company’s “crown jewel” search engine. But Seth Waxman, a lawyer for Google, said the project “revolutionized” how people find books and, contrary to the authors’ claims, would actually boost sales by introducing works to more readers. “There is no evidence in this record, none, of any market harm to the authors,” he said. The writers are appealing a November 2013 decision from a federal judge in New York, Denny Chin, dismissing the longstanding litigation. Chin found the technology giant’s scanning of more than 20 million books and posting “snippets” of text online constituted “fair use” under US copyright law, saying it provided enormous benefits to the public while sufficiently protecting authors’ rights. Google has said it could owe billions of dollars in damages if the authors prevail in the lawsuit. But the authors may face an uphill battle at the appeals court. In a separate case in June, the 2nd circuit rejected similar claims from the Authors Guild against a consortium of universities and research libraries that built a searchable online database of millions of scanned books. On Wednesday, US circuit judge Pierre Leval—recognized as a preeminent expert in copyright law—said most examples of fair use are commercial in nature, such as newspapers that quote from copyrighted works. “I would be surprised if you’re going to win the case by pointing out that Google, like The New York Times, is a profit-making enterprise,” he told Smith. Google launched the project in 2004 after agreeing with several major research libraries to digitize current and out-of-print works from their collections. INDIAN-ORIGIN AUTHORS IN NEW YORK TIMES 100 NOTABLE BOOKS OF 2014 Indian-origin American surgeon and author, Atul Gawande as well as historian Ramachandra Guha are among five authors with an Indian connection who figure in the New York Times (NYT) Book Review's list of 100 Notable Books of 2014. Boston-based Gawande's "Being Mortal: Medicine and What Matters in the End" which questions the role of modern medicine is listed number two among the non-ficion books. "It is a meditation on living better with age-related frailty, serious illness and approaching death," says the newspaper. The book, reported to have been picked up by US President Barack Obama during his Thanksgiving shopping recently, also figures in Washington Post's top 10 books of 2014. Historian and author Ramachandra's "Gandhi before India" also finds mention in the NYT book list, which was released today. "It was as a young lawyer in South Africa that Gandhi forged the philosophy and strategies later put to such effect in India," says the Times. Delhi-born Akhil Sharma's semi-autobiographical novel "Family Life", which the Times describes as "deeply unnerving and tender at the core" finds place in the Fiction & Poetry section. Last year which was not revised followed by disputes with UGC regarding who will be the authority finally everybody followed 2013-14 handbook. We are waiting for 2015HB to verify whether there is any change in the package as it is nearly INR 1900000/- for the whole purchase. There are many librarians facing the problem as they have do it at the end December. Private vendors have already hurry with their subscription but AICTE-INDEST consortium is not yet started the process. Social Media In Libraries - Challenges & Opportunities

How will social media affect libraries in the future? http://www.tandf.co.uk/libsite/whitePapers/socialMedia/ Social media is forming an increasingly central part of how we all communicate. Its online communities carry a strong and influential voice, and there is much to be gained from engaging directly with customers through these channels. It's against this backdrop that Taylor & Francis decided to research and compile a white paper focused on how libraries are currently using social media, looking at how libraries are applying social media channels, to what extent it is embedded in library communications, and how it may affect library roles in the future. The research we undertook was on a truly global scale - over 600 librarians worldwide contributed their thoughts, suggestions and experiences through focus groups in India, the UK and USA, telephone interviews, an online survey and a Twitter party. We heard some fascinating case studies through the focus groups, such as how librarians are managing to balance time and resource against providing an active social media channel (librarians in the India focus group described how they shared the workload in order to provide a timely response to queries). All research papers from Nature will be made free to read in a proprietary screen-view format that can be annotated but not copied, printed or downloaded, the journal's publisher Macmillan announced<http://www.nature.com/press_releases/share-nature-content.html> on 2 December.
